What's new

South Africa tour of the West Indies (2021)

I genuinely thought they'd be more competitive than what they have shown. This performance is arguably one of their worst in the past two decades.

Looks like they have gone back to 2000's route where the difference is they had better batsmen now they have better bowlers.

I guess the warning signs were there when they fortunately came away with a draw in the series against a very weak Sri Lanka side a couple of months ago. Sri Lanka should probably have won the first test of that series.

Didn't they draw in 2018 as well?
Anyways Pakistan has a better chance to qualify for next WTC finals if they beat West Indies and Srilanka.

Yes, they drew 1-1 in 2018.

Pakistan should really have no excuses to not win the series this August.

After 4 years of having shown improvements in test cricket, Windies seem to be regressing again. They have been poor since the 2nd test in england.

Maharaj's historic hat-trick fuels South Africa victory

A hat-trick and a five-wicket haul from Keshav Maharaj have powered South Africa to a 158-run win in the second Test against the West Indies.

The victory, secured before tea on day four, locked in South Africa’s first Test series win away from home since March 2017, when they beat New Zealand.

Maharaj accounted for Kieran Powell (51), Jason Holder (0) and Joshua Da Silva (0) in the space of three balls to become the second South African to claim a Test hat-trick on his way to figures of 5/36.

Starting the day at 15/0 chasing a hefty target of 324, the West Indies only added a run to the board when Kagiso Rabada (3/44) procured an outside edge from Kraigg Brathwaite (6) that was safely snaffled by Dean Elgar at first slip.

Rabada quickly added to his tally with the dismissal of Shai Hope (2) with a brute of a bouncer the batter could only glove to the cordon.

A 64-run stand between Powell and Kyle Mayesr (34) put the chase back on the rails before the latter became Rabada’s third victim, top-edging a pull shot that was caught impressively by Elgar running back from the slips.

From there, Maharaj took over. With the West Indies 107/3, Powell swept Maharaj straight into the hands of Anrich Nortje on the ropes. Having raised his half-century off 108 balls, Powell fell for 51 off 116.

His dismissal was just the opening Maharaj needed and with his next delivery, he had Jason Holder (0) caught at short leg for a golden duck and found himself on a hat-trick. He etched his name into the record books by dismissing Joshua Da Silva for a first-ball duck, with the keeper-batter caught impressively by Wiaan Mulder at leg-slip.

With that he became the first player from South Africa to take a Test hat-trick since Geoff Griffin in 1960.

Having at one stage been 90/2, the West Indies went to lunch at 109/6.

A handy 40-run stand between Jermaine Blackwood and Kemar Roach reduced the deficit but ultimately proved in vain when Quinton de Kock took a diving catch to his right off Lungi Ngidi (1/29) to remove Blackwood for 25.

Maharaj then wrapped up the match with the dismissals of Roach (27) and Jayden Seales (7), with Roston Chase unable to bat due to injury.

South Africa generally loves playing in West Indies. The conditions favour them a lot. Given how they have always dominated Windies including in 90s, it won't be wrong to claim that the Windies of 80s would have got stiff competition from South Africa if they were playing international cricket at that time.

A second ever, Test hat-trick by a South African taken by Keshav Maharaj, helped the Proteas seal a 2-0 series sweep when they beat the West Indies by 158 runs with a day and session to spare at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on Monday.

In a magical day for the left-arm spinner, he closed with his seventh Test five-wicket haul as the visitors claimed their first Test series win away from home since 2017 against New Zealand.

The home side was bowled out for 165 in their chase of 324 to win. In a more stable start, they slipped from 90/2 before lunch to 107/6 after the first session thanks to Kagiso Rabada, who returned figures of 3/44 in his dismantling of the top order. Maharaj’s magic beat off the middle order and tail, with Lungi Ngidi (1/29) chipping in with a scalp of his own – Jermaine Blackwood for 25.

The Windies will be kicking themselves regarding the manner in which their wickets fell, particularly those of their top scorers, Kieran Powell (51) and Kyle Mayers (34).

Roston Chase did not bat due to a quadriceps injury.

The West Indies have been fined 60 per cent of their match fee and penalised six ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate against South Africa in the second Test in St Lucia.

Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Kraigg Brathwaite’s side was ruled to be three overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised two points for each over short. Consequently, six World Test Championship points have been deducted from the West Indies’ points total.

Brathwaite pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Joel Wilson and Gregory Brathwaite, third umpire Leslie Reifer and fourth umpire Nigel Duguid leveled the charge.

GRENADA: The Proteas T20 squad has arrived safely in the Caribbean. They completed their mandatory quarantine during the second Test match against the West Indies in St. Lucia and have moved safely to Grenada.

The team underwent COVID-19 PCR testing upon arrival in Grenada and Cricket South Africa (CSA) is pleased to report that the entire travelling party has returned negative results.

Team update:

Captain, Temba Bavuma, is responding well to his middle finger dislocation rehabilitation and is expected to lead the team in the upcoming T20 series.

Assistant coach, Enoch Nkwe, has returned and will resume his role following family responsibility leave. Mandla Mashimbyi has returned to South Africa along with the rest of the Test squad.

Wiaan Mulder has been retained for the T20 team as replacement for Dwaine Pretorius, who unfortunately tested positive for COVID-19 in the team’s pre-departure testing in South Africa. He is not symptomatic and is doing well and following the stipulated COVID-19 protocols. The CSA medical team is keeping in close communication with him to ensure his overall wellbeing.

Beuran Hendricks has also been absorbed into the T20 squad as cover ahead of the tour.

The Cricket West Indies Selection Panel today named the 13-member squad for the first and second CG Insurance T20 Internationals (T20I) against South Africa.

The panel recalled Andre Russell, the talismanic all-rounder to the squad, as the defending T20 World Champions prepare for the matches which will be played at the Grenada National Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. First ball daily is 2pm (1pm Jamaica Time).

Russell is a two-time T20 World Cup winner, having been a member of the squad which won the titles in 2012 and 2016. He has played 49 T20Is for the West Indies and his last appearance was against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in March last year.

Roger Harper, Lead Selector said: “Andre Russell will add that ‘X’ factor to the team. He is an impact player with both bat and ball and lends greater depth in both departments. The aim is to build on the performance against Sri Lanka earlier this year, to build confidence, while determining our best squad and team as we run into the ICC T20 World Cup.”

South Africa are 2/74 off 8.4 overs with Bavuma and van der Dussen at the crease. Unfortunately it's started raining and the players are off the field.

Bavuma gone for 22 after the restart, SA are 3/95 off 11 overs. They should be looking to target 180 at least.

Don't quite understand why would they not play markram and janemann who have been in blazing touch.

Sorry Bavuma doesn't fit any international T20 team except arguably Sri Lanka.

South Africa finish 6/160 off 20 overs. van der Dussen top scores with 56 not out off 38 balls.

West Indies should fancy their chances.

This is one of the worst bowling efforts one can seen inside the power play of a T20 match. Yes good hitting by Lewis but, all the SA pacers fed it right into his zone ball after another.

GRENADA: An electric batting display by the West Indies saw them take a 1-0 lead in the opener of the five-match T20 series at the National Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

South Africa were outplayed particularly in the batting department, thanks to a West Indian outfit that packed a marked difference in personnel, with players such as captain Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Andre Russell returning to the fold as they begin their preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup later this year.

It was the batting prowess of Evin Lewis that got the hosts the quick-fire start that they were looking for, however. He smashed seven sixes and four boundaries on his way to 71 from 35 balls in their reply to South Africa’s under-par 160/6 after being put in to bat first. Lewis shared a partnership of 85 runs with Andre Fletcher to get their side off to a start which the visitors never recovered from.

Gayle and Russell contributed with unbeaten scores of 32 (24) and 23 (12) respectively, as their side cantered to an easy win. The only breakthroughs came by way of a direct hit by Lungi Ngidi (0/46) to remove Fletcher at the end of the 7th over and Tabraiz Shamsi (1/27), who finally ended Lewis’ reign in the 12th.

Earlier in the match, Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks got their side off to a good start with the bat as they put on 33 runs for the opening stand before the latter was bowled out by Fabian Allen for 17 (11). De Kock hit two maximums and two boundaries as he raced to 37 from 24 balls, before his knock was brought to a screeching halt by Russell (1/29) in the seventh.

Captain, Temba Bavuma (22 off 20), tried to stabilize the ship with Rassie van der Dussen – who returned unbeaten for 56 off 38 – but their partnership soon ended when Allen struck again. The rest of the line-up could not manage to get a start. David Miller (9), Heinrich Klaasen (7) and George Linde all fell for single figures – Linde without scoring, thanks to Bravo (2/30) and Jason Holder (1/29).

The second match takes place tomorrow (Sunday, 27 June) at 14:00 at the same venue, which does not give the tourists much time to work on what needs turning around, but they are still confident that they can do so.

WI wins toss and will bowl

WI batting is full of power hitters , its a big advantage in this format , till number 9 they have players who can hit six anytime

166/7 South Africa

West Indies should fancy their chances to win this.

The West Indies are 5/72 off 11 overs. They need 95 off 9 overs.

South Africa should be favourites from here.

110/7 Windies.

Another of those got out of the wrong side of the bed days for them.

South Africa win by 16 runs.

Fabian Allen with some late hitting off Ngidi, but it was too late as the game was lost in the first 10 overs of their innings.

Ngidi is a poor man's Wahab for SA. Can't believe why he gets picked time after time. They can play Lizaad Williams to not affect the quota. Ngidi is a hopeless bowler.

GRENADA: The Proteas levelled the five-match T20 series against West Indies 1-1 when they beat the hosts by 16 runs at the National Cricket Stadium on Sunday. In an impressive response to their loss just one day prior, the unchanged visitors returned with renewed hunger, giving the confident home side a few things to consider in the one-day gap between today’s fixture and the next, taking place on Tuesday.

South Africa were allowed just six more runs in their total than their Match One effort – 166/7 – as they seemed to once again struggle to pile on the runs in the slow pitch conditions, particularly after the losses of Quinton de Kock (26 off 20) and Reeza Hendricks (42 off 30) up front. The opening pair once again got off to solid start, putting on 73 runs in 6.5 overs after being asked to bat first by Windies captain, Kieron Pollard.

Captain, Temba Bavuma smashed a valiant 46 from 33 deliveries (5x4s, 1x6) while struggling to hold partnerships together. Another middle order batting collapse saw the losses of David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen and Rassie van der Dussen for 11, 10 and two respectively. George Linde was also trapped LBW for three off three but made up for it with the ball in hand (2/19).

He and Tabraiz Shamsi (1/16) strangled the opposition’s middle order, producing the game-changing moments that saw the momentum shift in South Africa’s favour. Together, they conceded an impressive, collective 35 runs for their eight overs, to starve the run rate and put their side in a good position to defend their total. They accounted for dangermen Nicholas Pooran (9), Andre Russell (5) and Pollard (1) as the hosts were reduced to 150/9 in their reply.

The seam bowling trio of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje (1/27) and Lungi Ngidi (1/49) grafted hard and their hard work was rewarded with vital wickets at the top of the innings, as well as the end. Rabada was the pick of the bowling attack with 3/37.

Match Three will be played at the same venue on Tuesday, 29 June at 14:00 local time.

West Indies have been superb with the way they pulled back the game in the second half.
86/2 in 10 to 160/6 in 1st T20I
95/1 in 10 to 166/7 in 2nd T20I

Obed McCoy has been super impressive in both the games, especially in death overs with the change of pace & yorkers.

The Cricket West Indies Selection Panel today named an unchanged 13-member squad for the third CG Insurance T20 International (T20I) against South Africa. The match will be played at the Grenada National Stadium on Tuesday, June 29 with the first ball at 2pm (1pm Jamaica Time).

The five-match CG Insurance T20I Series is currently 1-1 after the first two exciting matches of the Series. Two-time World Champions, West Indies won the series opener by eight wickets on Saturday, while South Africa fought back to win the second match by 16 runs on Sunday.

This series forms part of the West Indies’ international home season with a total of 15 T20Is as they continue preparations to defend their title at the ICC T20 World Cup to be played later this year.

Roger Harper, Lead Selector said: "The Selection Panel is happy to retain the same squad for the third CG Insurance T20I. With this series in the balance, we would like to give this squad another opportunity to display how well they can play together. We are aware that there are still a number of T20Is ahead so there will be opportunities for other players going forward.”

West Indies have won the toss and have chosen to field first. The odd change to both sides.

West Indies: 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Shimron Hetmyer, 4 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 5 Kieron Pollard (capt), 6 Andre Russell, 7 Jason Holder, 8 Dwayne Bravo, 9 Fabian Allen, 10 Obed McCoy, 11 Kevin Sinclair

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has congratulated Quinton de Kock on becoming the sixth Protea to reach the landmark of 50 appearances in T20 International cricket.

He reached his half-century of caps in today’s third match in the T20 International series against the West Indies at the Granada National Stadium.

The other Proteas to have reached this mark are David Miller, JP Duminy, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis and Albie Morkel.

“Congratulations to Quinny on yet another notable statistical achievement,” commented CSA Acting Chief Executive Pholetsi Moseki. “He has established himself as one of the outstanding players of the current era across all three formats and this is reflected by the respect he commands around the world where he is in demand to play in domestic global events such as the Indian Premier League and the inaugural 100 in England.

“His career batting strike rate of 136 is outstanding.

“He makes an equally important contribution with the gloves and is currently in sixth place on the all-time list of dismissals and seventh in the category of stumpings. As there is only one player ahead of him on this list who is still active in international cricket, he is certain to move further up the rankings.

“He is a key player for us as we prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup later this year and we wish him well as his glittering career goes from strength to strength,” concluded Mr Moseki.

Windies looking good at 97/3.

But anything is possible with them.

From 90/2 after 10 overs, West Indies score just 76/5 in the last 10 overs to mess up their run-chase.

Great game today, class death bowling from SA especially Shamsi. Great to watch South Africa

GRENADA: The Proteas held their nerve and beat the West Indies by a single run in the nail-biting third, of the five-match series at the National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. They lead the series 2-1 with the next fixture scheduled to take place on Thursday, 01 July at the same venue.

Tabraiz Shamsi was the pick of the bowlers and once again the game changer with his 2/13 in four overs – his most economical T20 international figures so far. He ensured that the home team’s over rate was not allowed to run away from them, as they went about the task of defending their total of 167/8 after once again being put in to bat first.

Anrich Nortje was also impressive in his second spell, returning final figures of 2/29. Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada and George Linde chipped in with a wicket each as the Windies were restricted to 166/7 in their allotted overs.

Earlier in the match and playing on a new strip, Quinton de Kock once again powered the team to a good start, blasting 72 runs from 51 deliveries (5x4s, 2x6s) on the occasion of his 50th T20 appearance for South Africa. His 42-run opening stand with Reeza Hendricks (17) did not survive the power play, but there was enough on the board not to hit panic stations when the latter was dismissed by Obed McCoy (4/22) for 17 (11) at the start of the fifth over.

McCoy struck again at the end of the same over, dismissing the visiting captain, Temba Bavuma, for one and leaving South Africa on 44/2 after seven. Aiden Markram made good on his first appearance of the series, hitting 23 off 18 and reigniting the Proteas’ engines, but it was a short-lived burst because he was removed by Dwayne Bravo in the 10th over.

The middle order once again failed to add runs to the board, but Rassie van der Dussen contributed a crucial 32 to get the team to the face-saving, 160-plus mark. The team ended with one more run than they posted in their previous match.

Bravo was the only other West Indian bowler to contribute to the wickets column, proving the value of his experience with his three for 25.

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada – The Cricket West Indies Selection Panel today named the 13-member squad for the fourth CG Insurance T20 International (T20I) against South Africa. The match will be played at the Grenada National Stadium on Thursday, July 1 with the first ball at 2pm (1pm Jamaica Time).

Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein has been named in the squad for the first time in the series with the West Indies trailing 2-1 in the five-match CG Insurance T20I Series. Two-time World Champions, West Indies won the series opener by eight wickets on Saturday. South Africa won the second match by 16 runs on Sunday and secured a one-run win on Tuesday.

Roger Harper, Lead Selector said: “Jason Holder is out of the squad on planned rest with a view to managing his workload, while Shimron Hetmyer, who was a late replacement for Chris Gayle in the last game, remains in the squad. Kevin Sinclair makes way for Akeal Hosein in keeping with the Selection Panel’s quest to determine our best squad and best XI. The objective remains to win this game and the series.”

This CG Insurance Series forms part of the West Indies’ World Cup preparation with a total of 15 T20Is to be played across three months in the build-up to the ICC T20 World Cup to be played from October 17 to November 14 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

WI 63/2 (8.5) CRR: 7.13

Stunning figures for DJ Bravo of 4-19.

West Indies win by 21 runs.

GREANADA: West Indies captain, Kieron Pollard, led with both bat and ball to help his side level the series 2-all in the fourth fixture of the five-match T20 international series against the Proteas on Thursday. They gained victory by 21 runs, setting the stage for a series decider, scheduled to take place at the National Cricket Stadium this Saturday, 03 July at 14:00 local time.

South Africa won the toss and elected to field first and probably promptly regretted that decision when Lendl Simmons blasted 20 runs off the opening over of the match by Aiden Markram. He and the skipper were the pick of the hosts’ batsmen, scoring 47 (34) and 51 (25, 2x4s, 5x6s).

Tabraiz Shamsi (2/13) and George Linde (2/16) were once again the tourists’ shining light in the middle period, taking four wickets for 29 runs between them and bowling 26 dots. An excellent feat considering the pressure of the time with the Windies looking comfortable when playing the seamers.

After the period of relative calm curtesy of the spin twins, South Africa went on to conceded 55 runs in the last three overs and, along with some indifferent fielding, resulted in the home team setting them a target of 168, which should have been gettable, considering that the visitors had reached that score in the last two fixtures.

Another batting collapse ensued however, seeing them restricted to 146/9 at the end of their 20 overs. Quinton de Kock again top scored, this time with 60 off 43 (6x4s, 2x6S). Markram was the only other batsman to reach the 20-run mark. The rest of the top and middle orders saw captain, Temba Bavuma (7), Linde (6 off 6), Rassie van der Dussen (6 off 7) and Reeza Hendricks (2) all depart for scores of less than 10 each. Kagiso Rabada provided some tail-end fireworks, hitting a four and a six to return with his unbeaten 16 from 12 deliveries but it was not close to enough in the end.

Once again, the Proteas will have just one day to work at turning their fortunes around and ensure that they clinch the series.

What’s your prediction for tonight’s series decider match??

After leveling the series by 2-2, West Indies and South Africa both teams will be fighting it out for a series win they face each other tonight.

Sheldon Cottrell has been added to the West Indies 13 member squad and Fabian Allen won't be available for the 5th T20 against South Africa.

The Cricket West Indies Selection Panel named the 13-member squad for the fifth and final CG Insurance T20 International (T20I) against South Africa. With the series level 2-2 the match is effectively a “final” and will be played at the Grenada National Stadium on Saturday, July 3 with the first ball at 2pm (1pm Jamaica Time).

Sheldon Cottrell, the experienced left-arm fast bowler, has been named in the squad for the first time in the CG Insurance T20I series. Two-time T20 World Champions, West Indies won the series opener by eight wickets on Saturday, June 26. South Africa won the second match by 16 runs and secured a one-run win in the third match on Tuesday, June 29. West Indies levelled the Series with a superb victory by 21 runs in Thursday’s fourth game to set up today’s showdown.

This CG Insurance Series forms part of the West Indies’ World Cup preparation with a total of 15 T20Is to be played across three months in the build-up to the ICC T20 World Cup to be played from October 17 to November 14 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
