What's new

South Africa vs India | 1st Test | Cape Town | Jan 5-9, 2018 | Day 2 | Discussion Thread

Nah bro, yes he was pretty ugly to start the innings but then he played some exceptional shots.

Of course bro, but at one point of the innings, before he got to 40 I think, most his runs were coming off edges and at less than run a ball.

Who knows? Test cricket is very attritional and merit based, and money power has little to do with it. Unless we use the money to fudge pitches overseas of course....glad we haven't gone in that direction.

We have different weathers and can produce different type of pitches over the country and have different conditions for batsmen to prepare and get use to..

Anyways I am just coming across as whining seeing today’s performance so I’ll shut up probably expected too much should have known we would suck as always.

It can work in LoI, but here we're trailing by 200+ and we need someone to set up shop for the long-haul.

Runs are runs, regardless of the format. But just to get my point across, he's survived longer than Kohli, Dhawan and almost even Vijay.

Don't know if that tells us about how great Ashwin the batsman is or how poor the Indian top order is.

It is so hard to really believe that this Pujara failed badly in previous overseas tours.

He just improved his technique and by far most sounded in the indian team right now

Moreover looks very composed and shown lot of character....Left everything outside off, defended the straight deliveries and scored anything comes on leg stump line

Keep the hate coming brother.
What i am saying is a Statistically proven fact.
Atm i dont want to talk about pak batting lineup.

Bro there is no hate in my message at all. I am just saying it based upon what I have seen, one of the guys might get a hundred someday but they cant consistantly play well in test matches in those countries.

Again, there is no hatred here and please don't misunderstand me.

This is really an overreaction. One bad shot does not make a batsman like Vijay worse than Ashwin.

He has scored plenty of runs in SA, Australia and England.

He has performed well in South Africa to be fair. This is his third tour there.

His composure has been outstanding but he better score some runs too. Its only a matter of time before a delivery has his name written on it.

Lunch and India survive....

76/4 India

I didn't even say that. I'm just saying Ashwin is getting a lot of slack for walking out at #6. He's survived longer than your top order batsman and gotten into double figures faster than anyone in the XI thus far.

It is amazing that Kohli has picked two sloggers Sharma and Dhawan on a SA pitch and kept proper batsmen like Rahul and Rahane on the bench.

Think we gonna lose this 3-0, before the series I had hope we might win the series but seeing the first two days and Indian batting i have been brought to reality about our batting overseas.. All the money being pumped and we still can’t dominate a game like cricket sad really..

Just 4 sessions in this series and fans are already dropping their shoulders. Nothing new to be honest. We will be back to number 5 after our away tours.

Agree with that, had an average of almost 40 at one point. Probably the tennis elbow hampered him in the last 2 years.

I used to say he is a better Test batsman overseas than MSD ever could be.

Yes especially Rahane was a big shock. Dhawan couldnt have been dropped because he was scoring runs recently. However, I guess time is not far we will see teams selecting specific players for specific test tours.

If Pujara gets out shortly after lunch it's game, set and match.

We'll be chasing 450+ in the 4th innings or asked to survive two days and we won't manage either.

Lol, you love quick runs. He'll probably attack in the second session, especially if he survives the first hour.

The attack you have is brilliant, so it's hard to score runs freely after the supposed premiere bowlers tire.

Steyn - Morkel - Philander - Rabada - though we haven't seen Maharaj yet.

Hope you don't make excuses for one of them being 'poor' in years to come if India do come through this, because that attack is lethal.

Rabada has been the pick of the bowlers thus far.
If I had to rank the SA bowler's on today's bowling it would be
Rabada
Philander
Steyn
Morkel (Has struggled it a bit today)

He needs to. Its extremely slow going. All it takes is one good ball. Some runs need to be scored before that.

Pandya might as well come out and slog. Nothing to lose is there.

Just tuned in and pujara out. This is what i was talking about. If you dont score runs, hanging around in such conditions is pointless because eventually an unplayable delivery will come.

That was hardly 'unplayable'. He just didn't have enough lunch.

Exactly. He can have a lot of time to earn money in later half of his career, his body and muscles are still developing, he shouldnt be playing IPL atleast for 3 years or so, he is just 21 his muscles are still developing.

At that age Steyn was playing County Cricket instead of making millions in the IPL.
I guess we can't do anything about it, we don't pay our players enough.
I alluded to that in the other thread. A guy like Hussey waited a decade before he could rep Australia.

A guy like Abbott thought about his family (fair to him). He thought with the emergence of Rabada, with Morkel and Steyn returning from injury plus Philander he could be on the side lines. The same with Rilley, but he betrayed us as opposed to Kyle who's 30.

Look at Dhawan.

At least Pujara didn't sky a pointless pull shot.

What a jaffa by steyn. Pandya survives but he is getting a reality check here lol

Beautifully bowled by Steyn.Such a pleasure to see him back.

Pandya straight away goes for the review.

Speed has been a bit on lower side , lack of match practise can also be seen but those venomous outsingers are still out there as good as they were earlier. Beautiful bowling by steyn !

37.2 Steyn to Pandya, no run, full delivery outside off, on-driven to mid-on. Good bowling, sticking with the full length with square leg back. Pandya a real candidate for lbw and caught in the slips.

37.3 Steyn to Pandya, no run, phew! What chance does Pandya have to play that so early in the innings? Full delivery around off, the ball pitches and jags away. Pandya looks to flick through midwicket instead of play straight and is beaten.

37.4 Steyn to Pandya, no run, given, but Pandya reviews immediately. Pandya thinks the ball has hit the back thigh, but is it possible for it to hit the outside edge as well? It sure is, but not in this case. It's another jaffa of a delivery from Steyn, back of a length on off, Pandya's bat face is again closed, it clips the back thigh en route to the keeper. Good review but he has to straighten that bat face to Steyn.

Look at the IPL hero go...

Riley was a great talent, really a loss to international cricket.

Though we might see him back in two years or so and by that time ABD and Amla will also be at the end of their careers.

I agree, but can't fault the guy. His job was to keep the innings together.
They needed to send someone like Saha to counter attack ahead of Ashwin.

It will mess up even if Rahul & Rahane are brought in the next match. This will rub even into the next overseas tours (as we are not starting well). This is what happens when two kids are together at top positions (Kohli & Shastri)

What happened to Lungi Ngidi? He seemed like the real deal to me, even better than Rabada.

Rahane and Rahul would have added so much stability to this line-up.

As it is we're like lambs to slaughter.

Yes, but he could have accumulated a lot of experience and game time over AB's sabbatical.
Next year half the team is retiring.

isnt' Rahul another aggressive opener ?

agree on Rahane, in fact he should have been the next to lead after Dhoni. Kohli is still not mature enough to be a leader

isnt' Rahul another aggressive opener ?

Yes, but aggressive with a brain. Which is too much to say for Dhawan.

But all is not lost. Saha is not the tail yet.

Pandya against Steyn is an absolute ticking time bomb.

This is no India!! Never give much satisfaction than seeing rohit FTB sharma fail.
