South Africa vs India | 2nd Test | Centurion | Jan 13-17, 2018 | Day 4 | Discussion Thread

Steyn did not play in the series, neither AB De Villiers and Faf du plessis did not play in the first test and Philander also missed 1 odd test i think.

If AB De Villiers was not playing in this series, India would would have won this series comfortably.

His 65

Have contributed to Indian defeat. Who says only centuries win you matches.

That's not how cricket works . Could you imagine India without Virat Kohli ??
No way India would have won comfortably . They havent even won anything away against the top 6 even with kohli .
Just havent done enough overseas in the last 7 or so years.

287 will be a hard task.

Openers have to take the shine off.

Then Kohli & co. can manage something. But they have to chase it before the 2nd new ball.

SA's game to lose! :faf

India's highest successful 4th innings chases:
403 vs WI, Port of Spain, 1976
387 vs Eng, Chennai, 2008
276 vs WI, Delhi, 2011
264 vs SL, Kandy, 2001
261 vs NZ, Bengaluru, 2012

Basically Kohli's team has to score the third highest 4th innings winning score in the 70 (?) year history of Indian independence. :ashwin

Come on, let's get to 75/0 or something. Get a start.

On paper 287 should be a cakewalk for this Indian side. Ball ain't doing a great deal once it gets soft. There's some uneven bounce but it doesn't happen that often. If just two of their batsmen play to their potential this will be chased down. But we've seen what happens to them :).

Ideally score at end of day today would be 60/0 but asking for a lot and wickets will fall in clusters ...

Just realized the record chase of 251 on this ground was probably a fixed game - with Hansie Cronje suspiciously declaring.

The Indians just might pull this off ..... but I don’t think so. This is a similar situation as the last one. I do remember Kohli once saying, “ I don’t mind losing a match .... trying to win it “ !!!! A real juicy setup for the fans in this one !!!!

it wasn't suspicious, it was proven. Cronje admitted to taking a 50,000 rand bribe to ensure a result

Not fixed for England to win it. Just fixed not to be a draw which was a 99.9% certainty as per market odds. Cronje's friends made a fortune just betting against the draw.

It is not a settled team and too many nervous batsmen in the lineup! It will be a huge-huge-miracle if it happens and it will lift the confidence like anything and India would do even better in next overseas tours... But it all looks like India will fall short by around 100 runs and will mess up next test as well...

india could lose by 150, or win with 7 wickets in hand..

hard to predict with this pitch, proven indian batting, and proven SA bowling

India should be able to get these runs. It's a rather slow pitch and most of the wickets were poor shots. Our batsmen have the patience and skill to play normally and get these.

This is not a bad pitch. SA wickets fell to bad shots. People who are saying India will lose by 150 runs probably do not know the spelling of cricket. If SA loses a lot of blame will go to FAF since he played so slow and killed the momentum. If he had accelerated they might have gotten 315-320

This competitive Test series has been like manna from heaven. If we had to watch more New Zealand-West Indies it would've been classed as a human rights violation.

India must avoid early wickets and enable their middle order to come in when the ball is older.

People should know history before cricket (successful run chases in Test Cricket that too by visiting teams!). Probably you are mistaking ODI/T20 with Test Cricket where chasing has become a piece of cake!

This is a different centurion pitch. Once the ball gets old, it is not that bad to bat.

Cricket is a funny game. You never know :kohli

He's right. You don't know first thing about cricket if this is your view that India would lose by 150 runs.

It's a flat wicket, in suitable conditions for home team in modern era. Historical records are of very little relevance.

This week England needed 304 in Melbourne to beat Australia. This had never happened before. Commentators (old school) thought it was very difficult. betting market thought 33% chance(much higher than comms) . England didn't even have trouble. They were favorites after 4 overs. Morgan said in conference he was happy to chase it.

Pitches, bats, batsmen etc are all much better in modern era, and most 4th innings pitches are very poor. This one is not. Something anyone watching the game would realize.

It is not just about the pitch, it is the psyche... Things have not changed much for Indians for several decades (overseas tours and the enigma)

Indian fans bringing ridiculous logic here.

Just because they themselves personally lack confidence doesn't mean players lack confidence.

This isn't old, humble, meek India. We play to win all the time now.

Lol the usual nervous suspects slitting wrists. Its not some insurmountable total. Yes it is difficult but with just Maharaj as SA frontline spinner who hasnt even bowled many overs this series, India can get real close. But one player would have to play an AB like innings which he played for his team in the 2nd innings. Just 1 such innings and SA will choke.

You are seeing the results in front of your eyes!

Vijay gone, chopped on. Was bound to happen.

Both openers looked shaky so not surprised one of them has gone.

Kohli should send Pandya next in and ask him to go hammer and tongs after the bowling. If he scores a quick fire 50, it would get SA nervous.

This total is chasable.

Pujara has a lot of experience on such kind of pitches having played for Baroda. If he fails India has no chance at all

The only way India can win this is if it treats this like an ODI on a bad pitch.

Playing too defensive and going into a shell will not help. Once every few deliveries one of them will keep low and it will be all over for the batsmen.

India should play with positive intent.

India have this in the bag. Nothing in the pitch.

True. We might lose anyway but a defensive approach is a definite loss. Should punish anything that is loose.

A proper batting unit - possibly yes! But that batting unit wouldn't have put us in this situation in the first place (first innings deficit)

Kl Rahul out. Time to see whether can Kohli play Sachinz Chennai 1999 innings or not.

Almost an hour has passed.

The ball is softer now.

Kohli must bat until end of the day now.

Otherwise, bye bye to Win.

Pathetic innings from KL Rahul.

Played timid and finally got out to a gentle loosener from Ngidi.

Where are all KL Rahul fans now? Dhawan on this pitch without seam movement would have been a much better choice.

Seriously India will struggle to reach 150 from here.

KL Rahul may have to say goodbye to his international cricketing career! Blame should go equally to himself and team-management for his fate! He doesn't have many buddies either (was lone in Kohli's marriage reception as I saw in one clip!)

This bowling unit deserved a better batting unit and a better captain/management!

Even Patel opening would have been better than Rahul.

KL Rahul has lost all his confidence. Sad to see him go this way. Hope he makes a strong come back. May be he needs to spend some more time with Dravid.

SA has this test in bag. 280 is not getting chased in 4th inning here with this bowling unit.

Its not easy pitch to bat on as many believe the pitch has so much wear and tear

Sooner or latter one ball will have your name on it

Defensive game won't going to win you anything here.....ABD just read the pitch perfectly and played a sumptuous knock

Kohli is the one who's really capable to play such AB kinda inngs for india so his wicket will be crucial

Observing Kohli closely, he is not a great captain.

I also see him going berserk when the bowler takes a wicket, he needs to tone down the celebration and show more skill in his captaincy. He is lucky his team has some world class performers especially himself.

Not only his captaincy on the field, but his selection policy too is questionnable. If India picked Rahane and Bhuv they would have a good sniff at winning the match. They are likely to lose by a 100 runs here again

The only opener in the history of Indian cricket whom I would have trusted to survive on this pitch is Sunil Gavaskar.

Rahul simply went into a shell and finally chased a wide delivery.

I agree. The only way to survive and score runs is to play with positive intent. There is uneven bounce and batsmen need some luck here to score.

Absolutely no intent being shown to score runs. India deserves to be whitewashed

Don't understand the tactics of India. Are they planning on winning or surviving? If it is surviving, they are not going to survive for more than 50 overs. So better treat this as an ODI and go for the win. If luck favors India, then they can chase this.

Playing timid and not even scoring of half volleys is ridiculous.

Pujara is 2(19). Sooner or later he will get an unplayable delivery for sure.

Playing like ODI would have given some chance. Playing defensively is not going to get India anywhere. I think game is pretty much gone unless one batsman plays a blinder. Blinders often comes against a crappy attack in 4th innings, but this is a top class attack and bounce is variable.

Thats due to the pressure

rabada and philander sets up brilliantly and ngidi gets the benefit

Horrible tactics. Kohli should have sent Parthiv to open and asked Vijay Rahul to score as many runs as possible with the new ball. It will only become tougher to score or survive as the ball gets older

Kohli has also made some poor decisions. He is not an exceptional captain. He is just about above average. His record in Asia is tremendous but if we all are honest, we know why his record is so good. And his tactics are better in Asia too.

Same is the case with other Asian captains except Matthews. They are good in Asia with their tactics but poor overseas. What makes Kohli's case worse is that he does have a team which can compete overseas which is not the case with other Asian captains who have average teams.

Agreed. This is a world class SA attack that India is dealing with. No real weak link even without Steyn. The new guy Ngidi is not bowling like a noob.

Worst part is, Vijay and Rahul did not even look to take singles. They were blocking or leaving everything. Even nice half volleys. Finally pressure got to Rahul and played a terrible shot.

Indian fans suffering from collective amnesia. Before this test all of them were harping how KL Rahul is the best batsman in India after Kohli and how much injustice is being done against the mythical legend. Now they are all calling for his head.

If SA gets Kohli then the rest of India cannot chase it even if they each bat twice.

It is Kohli or nothing for India at the moment.

If they had failed that would have been a horrible tactic as well. KL Rahul probably could have been sent later

Yes. He is a talent. Most of us stand by it. He is not given adequate run. Couple of months back he was top 10 ICC ranked player

I was the only one who did not want to drop Dhawan who plays with intent irrespective of conditions. Rahul has been out of form for almost an year now. Looked mediocre whenever he was given a chance.

I wanted Rahul in place of Rohit or Vijay. Not at the expense of Dhawan who would have done well on this surface.

Even Kohli won't survive a ball which keeps low..lol.. Indian has no chance...

Lucky Kohli. That kept really low. Got the bottom end of the bat.

Those kind of balls makes it hard for batsmen to play shots even if bounce is normal. Many ordinary looking decisions will come due to batsmen being not clear cut in their mind.
