What's new

South Africa vs Pakistan | 3rd ODI | Centurion | Jan 25, 2019 | Pakistan Innings Thread

Fakhar definitely has his technical weaknesses. However he was our best batsman in the New Zealand whitewash last year, so it's not like he's a failure in foreign conditions

We lack powerful openers especially in the absence of Sharjeel so dropping him isn't an option.
I don’t think a team with Malik hafeez and Sarfaraz can afford to play a ‘steady’ opener.

I understand why people are frustrated with Fakhar Zaman, but he is hardly been that bad . . .

His last 5 ODIs starting from today:

2
26
25
65
88

People mention his ICC champions trophy finals innings, but we forget his innings against England, South Africa and Sri Lanka when he made 31, 50, 57 and then 114 . .

People also forget when we were falling like house of cards in NZ this time last year, I believe he was the highest scorer for Pakistan . .

so its unfair to say that its only that Zimbabwe that has inflated his stats . .

Agreed he hasn't looked great in this tour . . and I get the feeling he is a confidence player . .

The other part is what kind of wickets don't suit him . . The pitches in the first 2 games are exactly hte kind of wickets that Fakhar isn't great at . . not to say, he shouldn't improve . . but its his weak point . . The pitches in England suit his kind of batting!

Anyway, like I said . not defending how bad he has looked on this tour . . but just saying . . we need him! he has been good for the last 2 years . . and we have bigger issues in this batting line up! We need to give him the confidence and tell him he will be opening come the world cup!

Good post. I guess people are more worried abt the way he sometimes gives his wicket away. To me I think he is much better player to be throwing his wicket as he is good enough to score if he hangs in there:

Imam's get out of jail shot is to use his feet to the fast bowlers

Imam really needs to come up with another get out of jail shot. Can't just go charging down the track after a few dots, soon enough bowlers will start anticipating it.

Thats not how it works, You have to have some kind of game that works to be able to play the innings he did. Otherwise anybody could do it. Also who is to say things wont go his way again? Targeting anyone with short bowls in England is risky due to shorter grounds and lower bounce.

That is what hacks do. They come off once in a while. You give any hack an uninterrupted run for 1.5 years, and they will come good every once in a while.

In the Champions Trophy, he was a new entity and was not comsidered a threat. Teams are not aware of his strengths and weaknesses.

Post Champions Trophy, when he made a name for himself, teams started to work him out.

In the Asia Cup, the same Indian attack made mince meat out of him. Yes things could go his way again, but they will go against him much more often because of the way he bats and the technical deficiencies that he has.

I personally expect him to be history after the World Cup. The management will definitely take him to England this summer because of Champions Trophy romanticism, but when he will inevitably fail, he will probably be axed for a long time.

See that is how they don't run for singles.

Imam standing watching rather than just listening to the striker.

Is it just me or Mark Nicholas sounds like a warm version of Severus Snape on the mic?

That's how most teams play but Pakistan can't even run let alone anything else as they don't have the stamina and fitness for running quick.

Pakistan biggest problem is not able to take singles in middle overs when there are 5 fielders in the ring, too many dot balls, go for unnecessary risk (big shots) loose wickets. Our batters technique is deficient to pears gaps.

Where as Indian top order has no such issues, they know how to take singles all the time, never are under pressure, they put bowlers under pressure with those singles, by trying too much. They leak bad balls when batters are keep rotating...

Pakistan has never fixed that problem, in era of 5 fielders this problem has exposed us even more against better opposition.

Babar needs a bat deal with a well-renowned sponsor. MRF would be fantastic but they won’t work with a Pakistani player. Hopefully GM, NB etc. would offer him a contract.

Imam should just rotate the strike without taking any pressure of SR. It just takes a 4 and a 6 to get the SR up from here.

Mark Nicholas has a brilliant broadcast voice.

I have said this before too that it's such a shame that apart from Ramiz, Pakistan has nobody to represent in international cricket in commentary as the likes of Waqar, Wasim, Aamir Sohail just don't have the English speaking skills for it.

Bazid is semi ok but isn't there either.

In the absence of GUN (Rohit Warner) type openers its better to have a player who takes his chances because at least when he comes off he will put us ahead of the game.

Only thing that worked for Fakhar is that he made a great start (won't go to that No ball), and then got ZIM reserves just when he was facing drop. The amount PCB has invested to make an opener out of FZ, had they invested that for Amin, probably would have been a far better opener by now.

Amin is overrated on here - his FC average against departments is in the 30s. His record is inflated by region bashing.

All pressure on babar to score quickly while Imam plays a go slow selfish inns.

Why is that important?

Bazid is semi ok but isn't there either.

People hate on him and for good reasons, but he is easily the best Pakistani commentator by some distance.

His biggest issue is that he doesn’t do any homework on the Pakistani players. Let alone their domestic records, he has trouble with names as well.

I have lost count the number of times he has called Babar “Babar Zaman”.

Imams strategy 30 (50) then make up for poor strike rate at the end a’la ross taylor style will fail 8/10. No market for these kind of players anymore.

Either bat at a s/r of 95 like baba is doing, or find another profession.

bazid comes across as whinny, not sure if its just his voice or the tone he uses on comm

This is the thing..Babar has to play the vast majority of his cricket against no real crowed support home or away. The guy's impact on the game would be so much deafening to the opposition if he had the same kind of support Kohli or SRT had

According to the commentators, Babar is the prized wicket for SA. Not bad for a 23 or 24 year old.

Its pretty obvious though. no need for commentators to mention it. Babar is a high class batsman, no player in the SA squad is better than him

Gray Nicolls is pretty decent too. Shadab is using it as well which you might not like.

You have always shown to be interested in visual aspect of the game, arm band vs arm guard is an earlier example.

I like watching bats of all these brands but generally Pak players are using only CA ones so you dont get to see those often.

Loved seeing Yousuf’s Gray Nicolls bat and Umar Ukmal’s GM in his earlier days.

Asif Iqbal was the best Pakistani commentator I heard on tv bar Imran.

Imam has to work exceptionally hard simply to rotate strike and maintain a decent SR.

Even at Port Elizabeth where he scored 80-odd he took 11 balls to get off the strike. Not a sustainable way to bat in ODIs today - teams will get you out through pressure by dots.

Indeed. He's been there for years and it's a shame really that all these years there's been no one else to come through and share the stage with him for Pakistan on an international level. Heck there is nobody even in domestic good enough to commentate.

A shame they left out Hussain Talat today. I wanted to see more of what his batting is like.

Yes. Gray-Nicolls is good too, but it is very English. A non-English batsman carrying one looks weird.

True, I really don’t like batsmen wearing elbow guards. A shame Babar has to wear one now after the injury at Lord’s in May.

At least he has an opinion and a smattering of insight, unlike Ramiz who can only parrot whatever the commentator sitting next to him is saying.

I heard Muhammad Wasim in domestics, he’s not so bad. The knock on bazid is about the tone of his voice, which is secondary to what perspective if at all you bring to the game.

Our players have very poor communication skills, such is our cricket culture. Hardly anyone has been capable enough to be a commentator.

Hopefully Shan Masood in the future, although I think he is going to be more inclined towards coaching.
