It used to be South Indians migrating to North for jobs in 60s,70s. Now it is reversed. In Chennai, I see people from north and north east doing all the menial and low paying jobs. Construction workers are imported from Bihar/UP. I can see them in interior Tamil Nadu too. In the last 10 years the demographics has changed so much. All 4 southern states are booming, the locals are lazy and demanding more for low skilled jobs, where as people from northern states work for half the wages, because there are no jobs in their states. Lot of students from north study in Chennai, Vellore.
Many construction firms in Chennai and TN have an army of interpreters just to manage the workforce. If you are fluent in Hindi and Tamil, there are plenty of jobs available. Entire infrastructure in Chennai is being built by people from UP/Bihar/Bengal/Orissa. In my locality I hardly saw any out of state people when I was growing up (80s/90s). But now nearly 30% are from northern states. Is this temporary or will they leave once their region produces jobs? No one knows.
The only South Indians who migrated to the North, mainly to Delhi, in the 1960s and 70s were Civil Services(IAS/IPS) Officers. More the 90% of the IAS qualifiers used to be from the South in those days. There was never any movement of low skilled labour from the South to the North.
The four South Indian states are actually the diving force for most of India's development. India's IT revolution was mostly powered by the Telugus from AP, who constitute more than half of India's IT workforce.
And the locals in South Indian states are far from lazy. They're too educated to be willing to do any menial job. People from UP/Bihar etc also come cheap and are attractive to local businesses. So they are hired in large numbers.
I don't see much hope of UP/Bihar developing to an extent where they can provide enough employment for their own people. Their politicians are too rotten and self seeking for that.
