I know the South has many good actors, but i have a question:

Why are so many South Cinemas full of people doing exageratted expressions, cheesy dialogues/dancing, wobbling heads while smiling, and overall seems cheesier and weirder than mainstream Bollywood movies. Even the latter get very cheesy, but Tamil stuff just feels cheesier

True, While Our Masala movies are more cheesier...no doubt...the real movies are as real as they get, and I would say bollywood does not even come close in potraying reality. But last few years, the cheesy movies have not been appreciated at the Box office...but only good real movies were barring a few expections.

Btw...Anybody Watched Dhanush and Shruti Hassan's " 3". OMG..The ending was super sad..Dhanush is turning out to be this generation's Kamal Haasan (acting wise...)...Even in Mayakam Enna...and Aadhukulam...he was fantastic...look at the scene above...Especially from 4: 20 till the end..

This is mostly Tamil(mostly),Telegu and rarely Kannada movies which have such exaggerated expressions, "styles" etc. these "industries" are technically superior, lot more money and glamour and poor people rural population are the target viewers.

Tamil(and Telgu) Hero/Heroines have fan clubs in every towns if not villages. the rural population in tamilnadu, mysore, andhra are extremely vulnerable or brainwashed to movies- that's what I felt seeing blind hero worship eg:Rajnikanth,MGR etc. Be it Film stars or Politicians TN population is very very vulnerable and can do whatever their leaders say. During TN election time, actors stops film shootings and go for supporting respective leaders giving public speechers for money as it is more profitable than acting.

and these fan clubs are criminals only.
in Tamilnadu, they built temple for film stars like khushboo, mgr etc I heard(don't know the truth). since tn politicians are also ex/present film heroes/writers/poets etc, even government is reluctant to stop this movie culture in tamilnadu.:bash:
Political parties offer Colour TV for decades because, watching tv for films is more important than giving Rice.

I hope south film industry especially Tamil and Telgu grew out of this artificial acting and unrealistic movies.

Rajnikanth is a hero in Tamil,Mysore and Andhra only. if anyone knows these places.

But it is those mass heroes that are also responsible for market. I always say this when discussing with friends...If not MGR, Sivaji Ganesan would not have had that good a platform. If not for Rajinkanth, Kamal Haasan would not have that market. And the same in my mother tongue telugu too..if not for Chiranjeevi, it would have been difficult for directors to make real cinema.

These mass heroes provide a market for cinema...the masses who started watching movies with MGR, appreciated Sivaji Ganesan...The same way Rajnikanth increased the market and reach of Tamil Cinema, and provided a platform for Kamal Hassan to do real cinema , with real roles.

But now, since there is already established huge market...it is necessary for Tamil and Telugu to stop "hero worship outside cinema. I have no problem with masala cinema....but these heroes should not be worshipped outside cinema.

I really appreciate Ajith's effort in dismissing all his fan clubs....and politics and cinema should be seperated in the south.

From NTR, to MGR to Karunananidi to Chiranjeevi to VijayKanth to Ambareesh to Jayalalitha...the list is endless...

Things are changing slowly with regards to cinema with actors like Dhanush, Surya, Karthi , even Ajith..and new age directors like Selva Raghavan, Bala, Shekar Kammula and chandrashekar in Telugu..and many others...

@Vcool80 - Which part of the India are you from?

BTW, its called Telugu and not telegu or telgu as you have mentioned in your post.

There is a clear belittling of the Tamil and Telugu film industry as well as the TN society in your post.

And regarding Cinema and Politics, this is not 1970's or 80's to fool people using cinema stars.

Even the mass super star Rajinikanth could not muster enough support when it comes to politics.

We are(Tamilnadu/Andhra/Karnataka combined) one of the most forward looking and progressive states in India when it comes to literacy levels/infrastructure/industry readiness/gender equality etc.

The way you put forth your comments about my state(as well as my neighboring states) suggests as if our culture is of one of those old tribal style one.

Please, avoid such generalization of state and its people.

@ vcool

you are right about the past politics about TN but not about the current scenario .. in TN fan clubs are not formed but they are created ..
IIRC stars pay money to maintain these clubs and most of the members of these fan clubs are half literates

in age old days regional parties ( read DMK ) were formed mostly on the basis of anti-hindi , anti-north propaganda and movies played a key role in it..
and it wass natural for the them to succeed in politics ( anna , karunanidhi are not heros but diretors and writers ) and the tradition continued till MGR and JJ..
and i am sure film stars now wont have any direct entry towards power ( aka Rajnikanth had no real effect )

Just to clear the air, I am not a language chauvinist or regional fanatic. I just could not agree with the points made by Vcool80 about my state hence replied in that way.

@Vcool80 - No hard feelings, mate

think Chiranjeevi should be a lession to all these movies stars aspiring to get into politics...the guy went from a legend to a no body..while he is still a legend cinema as considered...he is effing joke as a person and as a political leader..and the respect is as close to zero anything can get.

Couldn't agree better. Chiru, without a doubt was the house hold name of most of Telugu cinema fans from early 80's till he made the entry into politics. Ever since then he has become nothing but an opportunistic politician with poor strategies making him as Navrocks says a joke of politician.

Okay moving away from politics and fan clubs to movies...been listening to the song from 45 min...ever since friend shared it on facebook..

Such a beautifull song from Ilayaraja with phenominal actors...Kamal Haasan and Jayaprada ..nothing else can be said abt Sp Balasubrahmanyam and Janaki...

Tamil friends, Velu..avid learner..I know the movie was dubbed in Tamil as Salangai Oli(I think)...was it a sucess there? . Because in Telugu, the movie is considered ..even though it has been 30 yrs since its release...it is widely considered as one of the top 5 movies ever made in Telugu...

^^Awesome song from a superb film,bro.

Yes. Salangai Oli was one of the biggest success of Kamal Hassan in Tamil. It is considered as one of the finest film from Kamal, K Viswanath combo by many. With an evergreen music, brilliant acting and engaging story makes it one of the all time great film to be released in Tamil.

salangaioli is a hit movie in tamil also but might not be in top 5 movies ( thought its a direct tamil movie )..

@ Navroks

Actually i like heavy metal ( mostly finnish bands ) more than south indian music ( tamil + telugu mostly ) and i hate melodies..

but i like illayaraja's music because his music is not that soft ( infact most indians consider melody mean soft music which is wrong ) ..
anyway these DSP rocks :D

^^

Nope it was not a direct Tamil movie, a Telugu one...most Kamal movies are direct Tamil and Dubbed in Telugu...Sagarasangamam ( Salangai Oli), SwathiMuthyam(Donno the tamil nane, it is the one where Kamal is mentally handicapped and marries Radhika), Indrudu Chandrudu ( Fat Mayor Kamal Haasan and normal one) are some the very few of his direct telugu ones...

And yes Ilayaraja is my fav as well... DSP is awesome..his new movie Allu Arjun and Ileana's "Julai" Telugu music and theatrical trailer released 2day..

Haha...it it is crazy even on audio release events....and you have to be at the theatres on the first day of a big movie release to realize to how big movies are in andhra..its epic..

in the 1st video, Look at the response from 0:35 on the first day first show of Pawan Kalyan's and Shruti Hassan's Latest movie Gabbar Singh.. :D...and look at the people near the screen in the 2nd ...I am guessing it is the same in Tamil Nadu for Rajni, Kamal , Vijay, ajith...if you are tamilian or Telugu...first day first show of a mass hero is a thing to experiance.. :D

its because of stereotyping. Cheesy stuff can be found in Hollywood also but people are aware of that and able to separate cheesy stuff, if you know South Indian cinema you will be able to do that. Tamil film industry is very vast second only to Bollywood, it has loads of good movies.

"wobbling heads while smiling"
I don't get this? Mat be it is because when we speak in English most of us involve hand expressions similarly when we speak in Tamil most of us use head expressions, that way its easier to add our intention with message. It is weird for you because you are not a native Tamil speaker but for us it would be weirder if we speak with no smile and stable head, it will be regarded as message delivered with "don't care about you" attitude, its good for formal conversation but not among friends.

Most expected Tamil movie Vishwaroopam coming soon. Again Kamal proves what a versatile actor he is.

Yes navroks123, Ajith is famous for his negative characters, you should see Vaali where he plays a (deaf and mute) negative character, simply awesome.

Ofcourse I have seen Vaali....infact it was the last movie I saw with my parents before they left to usa(I stayed with grand parents till 4 yrs ago)....was 10 years old then...so the movie is kinda special for me...

I remember my parents talking about the girl in Oh Sona... Jyothika-- that she is new girl and nagma's sister and she is beautifull &stuff....that conversation kinda stuck in my head :D..

Movie was a huge hit in Telugu ..they dubbed it ...after that Ajith got an another hit with another dubbed movie Kandukondain Kandukondain(2000) (Aishwarya rai, tabu and mammutty along with ajith)...wonder full movie ... and then he never dubbed his movies in telugu untill Mankatha recently which did very good bussiness ...David Billa II is releasing with much more hungama... I also liked his Varalaaru too in which he played an eunuch...

Some review of above mentioned movie "Eega"

At a time when logic is found to be amiss in supposedly serious dramas and potboilers, SS Rajamouli has achieved something remarkable. He has made the impossible possible, without kissing goodbye to logic. The film would have well bordered on the fairy tale, but for his eye to inventive commercial cinema. Had Eega been made as merely multiplex film, it would have been injustice. The sheer scale and range of the film will awe the adults and entice the children alike. The story is not about how a good samaritan is killed and he reincarnates as an omniscient being to redeem his tribe from Evil. The strength of the film for an Indian audience is that the story mixes elements that can captivate the kids (the fly and its mind-blowing acts) and keep the elderly hooked (a believable murderous story with a romantic angle).

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/telugu-review-eega-is-a-cerebral-revenge/269784-71-218.html

Rajamouli has not only created an outstanding piece of cinema, but one that is entertaining and keeps audience glued to the screen. The technical brilliance of the film speaks volumes for the hard work that has gone into its making.

http://www.rediff.com/movies/report/south-review-eega-is-brilliant-cinema/20120706.htm

Last but not the least, hats off to director SS Rajamouli. Eega is a must-watch.
http://movies.ndtv.com/movie_story....yword=regional&subcatg=MOVIESINDIA&nid=240362

There is a reason that S.S. Rajamouli is considered the most innovative director in the Telugu film industry, and Eega is the perfect illustration of why he deserves to wear that crown. The film is completely insane, endlessly enjoyable, and absolutely unique. Eega is the best film about a man reincarnated as a housefly avenging his own murder that you will ever see. It isn't easy to find, but I highly recommend looking through the list of theaters linked below for a screening near you, you'll come out of the auditorium a changed person.

I happen to know for a fact that there are forty seven screens in the USA showing Eega this weekend, and only about ten of them will have subtitles. If you are near one of those ten, I will punch you in the throat if you miss this film. If you aren't near a theater with subs, don't be a [censored] , you don't need them to enjoy this remarkable piece of work. Eega is a winner, plain and simple.

Can't Wait...no Telugu film has created so much India wide buzz in the recent times....

^^Almost every site I have visited for reading movie reviews has been praising the presentation, BGM and camera work of Eega (Naan Ee in Tamil). Sudheep in particular is getting rave reviews from everyone for his portrayal of negative character. I am very eager to watch this film (partly because I am a fan of SS.Rajamouli's screenplay, partly because of gorgeous Samantha ;-) )

Reviews are good for Naan Eee , will be downloading it soon ;-)
We dont need any other reason to watch when Samantha is there

Rajamoulhi has given variety of movies , Vikramarkudu is my fav movie of his ( the original version of chiruthai n Rowdy Rathore )

Yeah, Samantha is absolultely gorgeus...loved her in Yem Maaya Chesave itself.(Telugu version of Vinayathandi Varuvaya...Although I liked Trisha in Tamil version more :D)...

I am looking forward to Gowtham Vasudev Menon's Bilingual with Jeeva/Samantha in Tamil and Nani/Samantha in Telugu....absolutely loved the teasers which released a while back..

I watched the trailer the other day it seems very well made but CG films never really interests me.

Its a very good attempt though, the quality of the CG is impressive, way to go.

One of my all time favt romantic melody by (Late)A.M.Rajah sir and P.Susheela ma from evergreen romantic comedy classic Thean Nilavu (Honey Moon) released in 1961. Music composed by A.M.Rajah sir himself. Incidentally, This was the first Tamil film to be filmed its major portion in Kashmir at that time. This film also used India Vs Pakistan Test match that was happening in its opening sequence.

anybody want to translate this for me

came across this today lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vpqwkbXnkQ

It is a Telugu song from a movie called "Anaganaga oka Dheerudu"...Disney produced it...but bombed at box office...actors are shruti hassan (Kamal hassan's daughter) and Sidharth(Rang de basanti fame)...

About the song translation..will try my best...won't be able to do justice the poetic nature of the lyrics

ChiruGaali Ayi vachedevaru
Who will come like a breeze
Cheli Chempa Gichedevaru...
Who will pinch my cheeks...
Chiru Kaalam nilichedevaruvarrevaro..
Who will stand by me forever..
AlaLaaga vacheveru
Who will come like a wave..
Ara Cheyyi pattedhi evaru
Who will catch my hand..
Anuragam panchedevaru...
Who will share his love..
Evarante nee venta nenele
nenante...
niluvella neevele
neevante...
thanuvella premele
preminche velayyindo
It is me, I am you..I am made of love for you and Its time to love..

Premalekha raasene ilaa pedaalau
prema rekha daatene neela padhaalu
premakika vesene ilaa praayalu
ee maya em chesthundo
My lips wrote a love letter...
My feet went over a limit..
My age is moving towards love...I wonder what this magic will do

Prema lekha raasene ilaa pedaalu
prema laali korene ilaa kshanaalu
prema lothu cherene padi praanalu
ee haayi etu pothundo
My lips wrote a love letter
Time is asking for a love song..
My life is deep into love..
Where ever this love takes me..

I tried my level best..obviously the actual meaning of the lyrics are written with a way more romantic usage of words....
btw..are you Indian?

no im pakhtun man,

Amazing Song....one of my fav songs in recent times...and Brilliantly picturized as well. Tamil Cinema does a brilliant job in presenting rural India....Kangal Irandal from SubramanyaPuram is also a great song in rural back drop...Colors Swathi is so cute...could never imagine her in a rural backdrop untill I saw this movie...great movie too

Myrmidon,On a side note, in a different thread, you should start teaching us little bit of Pashto.

Navroks, and others, thanks for keeping this thread going :)

yeah i am a strange individual who listens to nearly every type of music from around the world

but pashto, farsi, urdu , telegu and tamil in particular

if you want to learn pashto feel free to drop by the pashto language thread, it is laying dormant

it looked pretty active but most of the posters are no longer active it would seem

One of my Fav Songs recently.

I think only her age is stopping People from calling Shreya Goshal a Legend...I mean what a singer...A Bengali singer who sings Bollywood songs, Telugu songs,Tamil songs, Kannada songs..and does with super perfection. She even sang some old school Telugu songs. Phenominal ...I say she will end up higher than Lata mangeshkar and Asha...and a true Indian singer at that.

Kajal Agarwal is gorgeous as usual.....song is very nicely picturized too..

Rooba Rooba from Orange starring Ram Charan, Shahazn Padamsee...(Genelia D souza was the main lead though..not padamsee)

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ts3DvD4-bac" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

and then Sir osthara from bussinessman..
And I have a strange addiction for this song.....did not even like it initially when the movie came out..but only in the last few weeks....not that a great song. once Again..Kajal agarwal ..

I am going to take some time out to visit the language thread. T
Though telugu is my mother tongue, i was not good at it, until i started watching telugu movies after my college. And i am quiet fluent at it now.

Nice!!! Gautam Vasudev Menon, Ilayaraja working on a Love Story with Samantha RuthPrabhu   is just a match made in heaven !!!

Guys have you noticed south lags when it comes to creativity or visuals when compared to Bollywood, I think directors are too afraid to take a chance to do something different except few like Shankar , Murugadoss etc.

I am sick of seeing formula films with 5~6 songs, 4 fights, 1 evil villain, 1 super cute heroine who doesn't know how to act & 1 superhuman hero. This is how 90% of the films are being made.

Fastly trending peppy viral song from Tamil-Malayalam Bilingual film called "Neram" (Time). (Lyrics for this song is taken from Malayalam Veteran comedy actor Jagathy's gibbersih song of 1983 Comedy classic "Kinaram") :)

I don't understand Kannada but Sonu nigam is magical in this song

pistah song looks cool with that dappankuthu style dancing, but i liked jagathy's version more becoz of the funny dialogues between the actors nedumudi venu, sukumaran and mala aravind.i don't understand the meaning of lyrics.definitely not malayalam.

It supposed to have no meaning (just like Oh Magazeeyaa from Tamil Padam). If you have seen Kinaram you will understand that Jagathy just like that sings a song with gibberish words in one of his mock composing sessions. Those exact lyrics(or words) have been used by Neram team to make a real(hummable) song out of it (its kinda tribute to one of all time great comedy actor that Indian cinema has seen). So you can't compare this to the actual scene in that movie.

ahmedirshad,if you are talking about that album song.no,i hate it.

you are right avidlearner, its looks like a tribute to him.i am a huge fan of jagathy, thats why i am more biased to him.

Anybody watched Paradesi yet?? Loved all movies of Bala...except Avan Ivan

I am into Tamil real cinema these days....

Watched Aranya Khandam recently...and was mind blown....Brilliant stuff

Some other movies I saw...Dhanush's Pudhupettai.....one more Gem ...Myna was great .....Angadi Theru was superb....(I love Anjali....even in Engeyum eppothum and her telugu movie in Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu)....Good stuff !!!

^^Avoid paradesi at any cost. One of the most hyped up pretentious piece of crap film of the year.

Worse than Aravaan (now that is some feat even for BALA)

Oh okay....Watched Aaravan as well .....I love Vasantha Balan's Angadi theru ....but aaravan was dissapointing....infact I did not even finish the movie !!!!! I think subramanyapuram success....lots of people trying to exploit that madhurai based rural movies or just rural movies in general.....surely it has become an overload now ..!!!!

^^Agreed. Subramaniapuram was a classic but there were too many copycats following similar theme and mileu failed/failing miserably in Tamil cinema. Even Sasikumar couldn't deliver similar hit after his debut blockbuster.
