What's new

Sri Lanka beat India by 63 runs to win the first Test in Galle

Watching the wicket, pitch report & 1st half an hour of bowling, on day 1, I thought I 'll enjoy India's chase with aggressive 5 bowler strategy in Friday night.

I did enjoy that, now need some sleep - Good Night/Morning.

India just did a Pakistan :))

Should have won the match but bottled the chase. Well done to SL and Herath and of course Chandimal.

What a comeback.

Sad climax but still one of test cricket's most enthralling turnarounds. It proves that test cricket is still the greatest form of the game and can still have unbelievable turnarounds.Sri Lanka ressurected themselves from the grave after being 95-5 in the 2nd innings.Sri Lanka gained one of the all-time great test match victories in a fightback. To me the wicket beat India where the ball turmned square.India outplayed Sri Lanka for 3 days but faltered at the brink.India just could not hit the final nails in the coffin at the right time in the 2nd innings.

India just don't have the batting to play five bowlers with anymore. Poor decision by Ravi and Kohli.

Pakistani channels showing how Pakistani team beat Sri Lanka in he first test in just 4 days and how Indians have lost one in four days.:)))

Yup 5 bowlers mean 1 being under bowled and Mishra surely was, He could have been more effective I guess?

Sri Lanka registered one of test cricket's all-time great victories in a fight back.Few teams win games trailing by192 runs in the 1st innings or being 97 run sin the arrears in the 2nd innings with only 5 wickets left.It wa slike a total change of plot in an epic novel.Above all test cricket won.A deteriorating pitch too played an important role.

Wow, that was unnecessary.

Ashwin only needed to stay in and let Rahane knock off the runs.

I agree with IndianWillow that they were too defensive this morning, but at 81-7 you really don't need to be chipping lofted on-drives.

The problem is it wouldn't be 81-7 if they had batted positively in the first place.

Should be a good series, hopefully just as entertaining as Pak/SL.

As for the loss, Allah ni Marzi India fans :yk

What was Virat's captaincy like and how many runs did he score, what has his progress been like as a Test Bat? overcome the issues outside off stump? last time I watched him play he was nicking it to the slips on a flat deck. He can't play swing at the moment can he, still may develop into a world class bat but shoving him down our throats as a potential ATG is insane

Then this match will finish quickly because other 8 players were in IPL mode too. :kakmal

2 runs an over= IPL Mode?

This is the problem with half this board.

No matter what actually happens, they think the problem is T20 or attacking.

If they played IPL style, it would have been an easy win for India.

Ok bhai they were playing proper test cricket. Saha played a brilliant cover drive but got out. Happy now?

Well played Lanka!

Galle is a notoriously tough venue to chase anything down. 100+ has never been done IIRC.

This must be the first post I've see. You make in a thread not started by you. You're not a bot after all lol

If I can recall correctly, there are 6 instances when a Team conceded 200+ lead & still won the match. 3 times are follow-on & 3 times after batting 1st, last one was the SCG Test led by MoYo. 192 or more might be another 1/2 more instances, but I am not sure how many has won after losing 5 wickets before covering the deficit. In that regard, this was indeed a great turn around.

Even if that 81 Headingley Test, England were in deficit of 78(IIRC) with 4 wickets in hand, here deficit of 90+ with 5 wickets remaining. Just that in Headingley, England were following on, so that added to the context.

So it really is one of the great comebacks of all times. Chandimal has played once in a lifetime innings, sort of innings any great of the game would be proud of.

Congratulations Sri Lanka, especially Herath, Kaushal & Chandimal. What an awesome turnaround.

These Indian batsmen are too weak against spin. On top of that, they haven't played a match in the SC for 2 years. They will need to play a lot more longer format games against quality spinners on rank turners if they are to improve.

For now, an extra batsman should be added as an insurance for the vulnerability against spin, especially when batting on a 4th or 5th day pitch. Harbhajan was more or less futile. Murali Vijay could have done the 5th bowlers job. Hope he is fit for the 2nd Test.

Win is a win I guess but doesn't feel like a well earned win tbh. Our lot played some minnowesque cricket for the most part aside from of course the Chandi and Herath/TK magic and some brilliant fielding in the second innings. Things are looking a lot worse than I expected a year or so back. This Marvan/Mathews combo has taken us to whole new lows.
