George Garton included in England’s ODI Squad for Sri Lanka Royal London Series

England Men’s Head Coach Chris Silverwood has named a 16-player squad for The Royal London ODI Series against Sri Lanka starting at Emirates Riverside, Durham on Tuesday 29 June 2021.

England ODI Squad

Eoin Morgan (Middlesex) Captain
Moeen Ali (Worcestershire)
Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire)
Sam Billings (Kent)
Jos Buttler (Lancashire)
Sam Curran (Surrey)
Tom Curran (Surrey)
Liam Dawson (Hampshire)
George Garton (Sussex)
Liam Livingstone (Lancashire)
Adil Rashid (Yorkshire)
Joe Root (Yorkshire)
Jason Roy (Surrey)
David Willey (Yorkshire)
Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)
Mark Wood (Durham)

Sussex fast bowler George Garton is named in the squad for the first time. Having been a mainstay of Sussex white-ball plans over the past few years and been part of the England system through the Lions since 2016, the left-arm quick will be looking to push his claim for inclusion in this Royal London Series.

England Men’s Head Coach, Chris Silverwood, said:

“We have been monitoring the progress of George Garton for quite some time. He has been a significant part of Sussex’s bowling unit in white-ball cricket for an extended period. His ability to bowl quick with his point of difference being a left-armer certainly gives us options in this series, and he deserves his chance at this level.

“This ODI series is important as we continue to build momentum ahead of the 2023 World Cup. Despite some injuries, the squad I have selected is strong and gives us depth across all departments. We are looking forward to competing and putting on a show for the fans.

“Several players are not available for selection due to injury. Jofra Archer (right elbow), Saqib Mahmood (abdominal) and Reece Topley (side strain) are all missing, but continue to make excellent progress from their respective injuries.

“We are pleased that Ben Stokes is returning to action with Durham this weekend after recovering from a fractured finger. If everything goes to plan, I hope he could be available for selection for the Vitality IT20 series against Pakistan next month.

“Unfortunately, following the second Test at Edgbaston against New Zealand, Olly Stone has been diagnosed with a stress fracture of his lower back and will miss the rest of the summer with the injury. It is a great shame as Olly was showing real promise with the ball and would have been part of our selection plans for this series.”

This summer represents a "huge chance" for England players to secure their places less than four months before the T20 World Cup, says captain Eoin Morgan.

England begin a three-match series against Sri Lanka in Cardiff on Wednesday, before three games against Pakistan starting on 16 July.

"It's important to try and get guys that we feel will play a part in the World Cup some form of cricket during the next four weeks," Morgan told BBC Sport.

"This series and the rest of the white-ball summer is a huge opportunity to stake our claim as a team and as individuals, both to be selected for the World Cup, but also the carrot of number one side in the world."

The top-ranked T20 side in the world, England are scheduled to play only five further T20s, in Bangladesh and Pakistan, before the T20 World Cup in India gets under way on 18 October.

They will play three T20s in four days against Sri Lanka, including back-to-back games at Sophia Gardens.

"You want guys to be on the money from the first game because there's no breathing space," said Morgan.

"It can come out at you quite quickly. We need to be on top of our game."

Unlike the England Test side, which has been missing key players this year because of rest and rotation, the T20 team has been close to full strength.

All-rounder Ben Stokes is not part of the squad after a broken finger, although he made his comeback for Durham in the T20 Blast on Sunday.

Jofra Archer continues his recovery from an elbow injury, while fellow pace bowler Reece Topley is absent with a side strain.

Opener Jonny Bairstow, who sustained an ankle injury playing for Yorkshire on 16 June, has been passed fit to play, while Dawid Malan is also available despite missing Yorkshire's T20 Blast win over Derbyshire on Sunday with Achilles trouble.

All-rounder Chris Woakes is in contention play his first T20 since 2015, while left-arm seamer David Willey - another member of the 16-man squad - has not played since 2019.

Former captain Angelo Mathews was left out of a Sri Lanka squad that contains three uncapped players in Dhananjaya Lakshan, Charith Asalanka and Ishan Jayaratne.

Sue Redfern will become the first female umpire to officiate a home England men's match in the first T20.

The 43-year-old, who played six Tests and 15 ODIs for England between 1995 and 1999, replaces Alex Wharf as fourth umpire because the World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand will go into a reserve day on Wednesday.

Redfern was an on-field umpire for England women's drawn Test against India at Bristol that ended on Saturday.

England squad: Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Sam Billings (wk), Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Sri Lanka squad: Kusal Perera (capt, wk), Kusal Mendis (wk), Danushka Gunathilaka, Avishka Fernando, Pathum Nissanka, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Dhananjaya De Silva, Oshada Fernando, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Ramesh Mendis, Chamika Karunaratne, Dhananjaya Lakshan, Ishan Jayaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Isuru Udana, Asitha Fernando, Nuwan Pradeep, Binura Fernando, Shiran Fernando, Lakshan Sandakan, Akila Dananjaya, Praveen Jayawickrama.

In an interview with Saj for TCP, Sri Lanka Head Coach spoke about why he feels that the upcoming T20I series against England will be a tough challenge for his side and how the experience will be beneficial for the players in their future development.

Mickey Arthur’s reign as Sri Lanka’s Head Coach which commenced in December 2019 has been anything but a bed of roses. Since his appointment, Sri Lanka have been inconsistent in the Test format, are currently placed 9th in the ICC ODI rankings and 8th in the T20I rankings. However, for Arthur, the upcoming white-ball series against England, is an ideal opportunity to prepare his side for future challenges.

“Sri Lanka is definitely going through a rebuilding phase where we have identified certain players and identified a certain brand of cricket we want to play, and it’s fair to say that we are just at the start of that journey. It was clear we had to do something by just looking at the rankings and we’ve made some radical and tactical changes to the brand of cricket we want to play. By making those changes we are hoping to start afresh with a young side.”

With little to show for their recent efforts, Arthur knows that the challenge that faces his team in England is a huge one, but one that he wants his players to face head-on.

“It’s a daunting task to come to England with a young squad, but we have got nothing to lose. We want to come here and play our aggressive brand of cricket which is what we are trying to commit to. It’s going to go wrong at times but that’s our commitment to each other and that’s our commitment to the brand that we know. The only way we can start challenging the best teams is by taking them on. We can’t be defensive in any way. Yes, it’s a tough task against England, but it’s a great challenge and an opportunity as well.”

In his previous role as Head Coach of Pakistan, Arthur re-confirmed his ability to get the best out of talented but raw cricketers, and it’s a philosophy that he hopes will also work for Sri Lanka.

“Coaching Sri Lanka is very much like coaching Pakistan in that I don’t want to change the players too much, I just want to build them and make them better. The minute you take that flair away from cricketers from the sub-continent, it’s fraught with disaster. All I’ve tried to do is to build upon what they have and also tried to create an environment that allows them to play with freedom and an environment that is nothing short of excellence in the way we train and prepare.”

Whilst appreciating the difficulty of touring England with his young charges, he hopes his players will be able to make full use of the learning opportunities and come away from the tour with more confidence in their own abilities.

“We come to England ranked lowly in the white-ball formats and we have just got to play to the best of our ability because the value of confidence that we can get from doing well in England is simply immeasurable. Seeing our players perform and play to their undoubted talent will allow us to grow much quicker as a team. We want to keep progressing and in order to do that we need to get some confidence and having a good series in England will certainly give us that confidence.”

The quality of opposition facing Sri Lanka when the series commences in Cardiff on 23rd June is clearly evident to Arthur and something that he can only appreciate and admire.

“England possess so much talent and so much depth. They possess an array of pace-bowlers, good spinners and they’ve got batsmen that hit the ball a mile. They are the full package and they’ve got so many good cricketers. Their system produces so many excellent players that they are almost spoilt for choice. They have so many match-winners within their side. within any given time.”

A good tour of England will undoubtedly provide a great boost for Mickey Arthur’s side but most importantly, as he explains, the experience will be a good learning opportunity for his players and will help in shaping the Sri Lankan white-ball side of the future.

“I’m hoping that we learn so much from this series and take all the learnings back with us. This is an early start to the journey for so many of our players and also for us as a team. I’m hoping that we can get some confidence and turn in some really good performances here in England, because that will fast-track everything that we are trying to do within our system.”

England (130/2) beat Sri Lanka (129/7) by 8 wickets in the 1st T20I in Cardiff

World Number 1 side, England, lock horns with Sri Lanka in the first T20I of the 3-match T20I series today (June 23). Led by Eoin Morgan, England have been a sheer dominating force in limited overs cricket and they are outright favourites in this series.

England will be looking to test some of their fringe players ahead of the coveted ICC T20 World Cup, which will be taking place in a few months. The likes of Jos Buttler and Johnny Bairstow will be key players for England.

Sri Lanka have had a very poor record in the limited-overs segment and are currently ranked 8th in the ICC T20I rankings. They will have to severely punch above their weight if they are to come anywhere close to the England team.

Sri Lanka - not looking good in this format also!

David Malan is so useless how did he become Top Ranked T20 Batsman.

Sri Lanka have played like a team who would rather be on the beach back home.

Food for thought for Pakistan.

This England T20I side look a top side.

Astrong collective bowling performance and a damaging opening partnership helped England record an eight-wicket victory to draw first blood in their T20I home series against Sri Lanka.

Despite the rearguard action of Sri Lankan number six Dasun Shanaka, his second T20I fifty was struck in vain as five of England’s six bowlers claimed wickets to set up a comfortable chase at Sophia Gardens.

Jos Buttler capitalised on the bowlers' early work to make an unbeaten 68 off 55 deliveries, combining in a first wicket partnership of 80 with Jason Roy, who compiled 36 (22).

Sri Lankan captain Kusal Perera won the toss and elected to bat on a surface that proved to be tricky, as Avishka Fernando scooped a Sam Curran delivery into the hands of Chris Jordan for a duck in the second over of proceedings. Jordan tasted bowling success of his own three overs later, as Danushka Gunathilaka, also troubled by the pace of the surface, miscued a scoop into the gloves of Buttler for 19 (16).

Liam Livingstone was deployed before fellow leg-spinner Adil Rashid, and captain Eoin Morgan’s decision was vindicated when he claimed Kusal Mendis for nine, trapping him in front lbw with a full delivery that Mendis attempted to sweep. Mendis’ review was unsuccessful, and England pushed on with a fourth wicket as Dhananjaya de Silva picked out Rashid at third man for just three.

Relishing in the home conditions, England were relentless with the ball and in the field, with only four boundaries conceded in the first ten overs. Reeling at 57/4 at the halfway mark, captain Perera looked to up the tempo, hitting Mark Wood for a six off the first ball of the eleventh over, albeit with the help of the top-edge of his bat.

Shanaka was measured in the beginning of innings, scoring just 13 in his first 19 deliveries, before attempting to lift the rate with two consecutive boundaries behind point to begin the 15th over, also off Wood.

England pressed on with their plans, and prevented Sri Lanka from scoring a boundary for the next 25 balls. Shanaka was able to break the shackles eventually, scoring 23 of his team’s 25 runs in the last two overs to reach his half-century, before falling to Curran off the last ball of the innings. Sri Lanka finished on 129/7, 21 runs short of the average first innings total at the venue for T20 Internationals, with the economical Chris Woakes (0/14 off three overs) the only English player without a wicket.

England’s typical approach of all-out attack at the top of the innings was on full display in reply, with boundaries in every over of the Powerplay. After strolling to 61/0 after the six overs and 80/0 after eight, it took a leaping effort on the inner circle by Gunathilaka to break the partnership, after Roy mistimed his swat down the ground.

Isuru Udana claimed Sri Lanka’s other wicket, sneaking one in between Dawid Malan’s bat and pad to dismiss him for 7 (14), though Buttler nursed home the chase with Jonny Bairstow (13 off 12 balls) to win the match with 17 balls to spare.

England can claim the three-match series with another win on Thursday.

He's has more than enough chances to show that and hasn't.

No need to be a racist whitey, on current form he is the first name on the team sheet and should be there at no.3, he has a decent record in India to and provides an option with the ball. Not his fault that England kept failing to utilise him, Dhoni on the other hand done him more justice

Well then why did he not perform in T20 series in India? and is he a bowler or batsmen?

He wasn’t picked by the team in the recent series, he is a top order batsman who can bowl to. A very handy utility player who was utilised well by Dhoni

The 2nd T20 tonight is free to air on the BBC.

There’s an interesting article on the net you may find on Mo being essential viewing for the FTA audience, couldn’t agree more!

England have become T20 bullies nowadays. In test cricket, they mostly rely on individual brilliances to save/win a test series like Stokes, KP and Botham.

Don't worry Pakistan will beat England 2-1 in t20s

Sri Lanka win the toss and bat.

Buttler has a calf strain.

Woakes rested.

Nice footwork from Sam Curran for that run out.

Can someone tell Vaughan and Tufnell they're not on radio now.

Anaemic start from SL. The memories of Sanath Jayasuriya destroying bowlers up front are very distant.

Painful to watch.

Not a single boundary in the PP overs. Feel sorry for the SL fans who've turned out in Cardiff.

Horrific horrific horrific, I am boycotting this game. Putting out this lot on FTA, no thanks

We shouldn't be picking people as charity picks when they're not good enough just because the game's on FTA.

111/7 Sri Lanka

Well at least they've lasted 20 overs.

England treating it like a Practise game. Butler not playing today, England have lost two wickets they might have to pay to take it so easy.

Actually forget the impact of players who are currently being utilised to warm the bench, am pretty sure the village idiots of Hampshire would manage to find a top order more stable then this lot! walking wickets against spin in India

The five-wicket win in Cardiff secures a series win for England with one match left to play.

After winning the first game, England were ahead 1-0 in the three-match series. It was Sri Lanka who won the toss and decided to bat first in Cardiff.

It was a perfect start for England as Danushka Gunathilaka (3) was run out by Sam Curran.

And one quickly became two following a short ball saw Avishka Fernando (6) sky one to Liam Livingstone.

It was now up to Kusal Perera (21) and Kusal Mendis (39) to build a strong partnership. A sigh of relief was had as they brought their partnership up to 50, but this was short-lived. Perera looked to play a reverse sweep off the bowling of Adil Rashid (2/24) but instead found Eoin Morgan.

Chris Wood then claimed back-to-back wickets with Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella to give England the edge.

Sri Lanka finishing 111/7 after their 20 overs.

Sri Lanka came out strong with Bairstow (0) departing for a duck off Binura Fernando's second ball.

It was another quick wicket for the visitors with Dawid Malan (4) caught LBW off the bowling of Dushmantha Chameera (1/29) leaving England 8/2.

Sri Lanka's bowlers continued to threaten and were rewarded with the wickets of Morgan (11) and Jason Roy (17).

Rain started to fall and play was stopped and when it resumed England would need 43 runs off 48 balls.

Liam Livingstone (29*) and Sam Billings (24) brought England within touching distance before Sam Curran (16*) clinched the match with a six.

Jos Buttler to miss rest of England’s white-ball campaign against Sri Lanka

England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the remainder of England Men’s Vitality IT20s and Royal London ODIs against Sri Lanka after sustaining a right calf injury in England’s first IT20 victory at Sophia Gardens on Wednesday.

He underwent an MRI scan in Cardiff on Thursday morning, which revealed a small tear.

Buttler felt tightness and discomfort at the end of the game after a match-winning 68 not out secured an eight-wicket win.

He will return home today and commence his rehabilitation programme.

Yorkshire batsman Dawid Malan has been added to the ODI squad for the forthcoming Sri Lanka Royal London ODI Series.

Sri Lanka have won the toss and have opted to field

Two changes for England : Wood (rested), Roy (tight hamstring) out and Ali and Woakes in.

Wait these games were on FTA?

Only the 2nd game was, ECB trying to do a bit better at giving the game more exposure, the following has been agreed with the BBC for a 5 year period:

Each summer from 2020 to 2024, the BBC will broadcast live TV coverage of:

Two England men's home T20s
One England women's home T20s
10 men's matches from the ECB's new domestic city-based T20 competition
Up to eight matches from the women's domestic T20 tournament, including both finals

The BBC will also show:

Highlights of England men's home Tests, ODIs and T20s
Highlights of England women's home internationals
Digital clips of men and women's internationals, plus County Championship, One-Day Cup and T20 matches

England are dominating the Third T20 without even playing the likes of Butler, Roy and Stokes.

Sri Lankan are no match to England, how low have their standards fallen.

England has ruined moeen's career. He is a top order bat and should have never been demoted. He was never given an extended run in top order they kept messing around with his batting position.

Dushmantha chameera has been impressive in this tour.He always had the pace but now he has good slower ball as well.

Going from bad to worse for the tourists.

England set for 180 or so.

This is good. One or two live matches won't make a difference. But showing highlights of all Test, ODI and T20 home matches of England will go a long way in helping interest in cricket.

Was the BBC showing highlights before or is this a new development?

Mis-match this series so far.

One of the poorest Sri Lankan teams you will ever see.

ENG 180/6 (20)SL 91 (18.5)

England won by 89 runs

Take series 3-0

Dawid Malan hit 76 from 48 balls as England thrashed Sri Lanka by 89 runs in Southampton to complete a 3-0 clean sweep in the Twenty20 series.

Malan shared an opening stand of 105 with Jonny Bairstow, who made 51, in England's 180-6.

Although England lost 5-19 late on, the target proved beyond a Sri Lanka side who were outplayed in all three games.

They were bowled out for 91 with seven balls unused as David Willey took 3-27 and Sam Curran 2-14.

Willey had Danushka Gunathilaka caught at second slip with the second ball of the innings and Sri Lanka subsided in embarrassing fashion after a chaotic start.

Chris Woakes, recalled for this series after a six-year absence, claimed 1-9 - the most economical four-over spell by an England bowler in T20s - while Sam Billings underlined a ruthless all-round display for the hosts with a brilliant direct hit run-out from deep mid-wicket.

It was England's fourth biggest win in terms of runs in T20s, while Sri Lanka's total was their fourth lowest.

The sides meet at Emirates Riverside on Tuesday in the first of three one-day internationals, and the evidence of the past four days suggests Sri Lanka face a mighty task against the world champions.

This was a timely return to form for 33-year-old Malan - the top ranked T20 batsman in the world - with the T20 World Cup looming in October.

The left-hander's credentials came under scrutiny after he made seven and four in the first two matches of this series, having passed 25 once in five matches in India earlier this year.

Promoted to open because of a hamstring injury to Jason Roy, Malan struggled for the strike early on before racing to 50 from 30 balls.

He hit four leg-side sixes and also scored around the wicket with sweeps, reverse-sweeps and lofted extra-cover drives.

Malan and Bairstow's century opening stand - brought up in only 11.1 overs - was England's first in T20s since 2013.

Malan eventually drove to long-off - the fourth man to fall in England's late-innings collapse - but he has surely done enough to silence any questions over his place.

England's collapse was sparked by seamer Dushmantha Chameera, who bowled excellently at the death to remove Malan, Billings, Eoin Morgan and Moeen Ali with a mix of slower balls and yorkers.

It seemed to give Sri Lanka an outside chance but, as they have in each game of this three-match series, they performed miserably with the bat.

Having plodded to 111-8 batting first in the second T20, they began their chase in wild fashion.

Number three Oshada Fernando swiped at almost every ball, missing most, until he top-edged to point to fall for 19 off 27 deliveries.

Wickets tumbled to England's seamers amid a flurry of poor shots - spinner Adil Rashid was not introduced until the 17th over - and only a counter-attacking 20 from number nine Binura Fernando prevented Sri Lanka surpassing 82, their lowest T20 total.

England, who were only tested when collapsing to 36-4 in an ultimately comfortable win in the second game, will have learned little from such a one-sided series against a side whose performance matched their ranking of nine in the world.

Player of the match Dawid Malan: "The criticism does bother me sometimes but it drives me as well. I like to prove a point, so when I do get criticised I like going out there and proving wrong those with their opinions.

"I scored 60 in the last game in India so I don't know where the lean patch is coming from.

"The thing this white-ball team has been good at is they don't listen to noise. Eoin and (coach) Chris Silverwood are fantastic at whenever there is some criticism backing you as a player."

England captain Eoin Morgan: "The biggest and most impressive thing throughout the series were our bowling performances. The bowlers have adapted to conditions well and it was an outstanding effort from the seamers today to bowl 16 overs straight."

England bowler James Anderson on BBC Test Match Special: "That was ruthless and clinical. England were brilliant in all departments.

"Sri Lanka were lacklustre and they've got a lot of work to do, but this England team will be winning a lot of games in the coming months, so they don't need to be too disheartened."

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Perera: "We knew it was going to be a tough series coming into it, but our batting wasn't up to the mark - that was our main issue. We couldn't get used to the pace and the bounce of the pitches and conditions."

This is good. One or two live matches won't make a difference. But showing highlights of all Test, ODI and T20 home matches of England will go a long way in helping interest in cricket.

Was the BBC showing highlights before or is this a new development?

No, this is the first time in ages the BBC are involved with cricket on the telly although their coverage of the Tests on radio has been the best on the planet. Channel 5 in the past had shown highlights of all the games.

Mis-match this series so far.

One of the poorest Sri Lankan teams you will ever see.

England don’t seem to have figured out or settled their best XI, I can easily see many of the batsman struggling against spin in India.

Lanka looked very poor but Chameera is a good find, Mickey got a lot of work to do

Mo at no.6, pathetic KingKhanWC

Keep messing him around.

Mo will be crucial for England in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE. He is one of the best players of spin bowling, I would have him at no.4. His bowling will also be important, the likes of Willey will be hit around the park.

Following a PCR test administered on Friday 25 June at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton, The England and Wales Cricket Board can confirm that ICC Match Referee Phil Whitticase has tested positive for COVID-19. Whitticase, who was officiating during the three-match Vitality IT20 Series between England and Sri Lanka, is well and is asymptomatic.

He will now observe a period of 10-days of self-isolation from 25 June, in accordance with the UK Government’s protocol on quarantine.

Seven other members from the match officials and anti-corruption unit teams were deemed close contacts, including five members due to officiate at the first Royal London ODI on Tuesday, 29 June at Emirates Riverside, Durham. Those impacted will have to self-isolate for 10-days until 7 July.

No members of the two teams were impacted.

Alternative arrangements will be put in place to ensure Tuesday’s ODI goes ahead as planned.

Should the CEO and the CHAIR of ECB be made to resign?

England opt to bowl

Slow and steady - seems like survival is the goal here!

It's depressing to see the state of Sri Lankan cricket after greats like Sangakkara, Muralitharan, Jayawardene, Dilshan, etc. made them a superpower in world cricket.

Corruption and lack of player development have destroyed their cricket.

I'd hate to say it, but they're at the same level as associate nations now.

185 all out.

Another terrible performance by Sri Lanka.

Good innings by Root - steadied the ship.

This series so far has been men versus boys.

Sri Lankan cricket sinking rapidly.

A four-wicket haul from Chris Woakes followed by an unbeaten 79 from Joe Root helped England to register a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first ODI, going 1-0 up in the series.

The win also means England have edged ahead of Bangladesh to go to No.1 in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League standings.

Chasing a sub-par 186 was by no means an easy feat for the hosts, who started well but stuttered thereafter as the Sri Lankan bowlers hit back with quick wickets. However, Root showed application and shared a patient 91-run stand for the fifth wicket that all but sealed the game for England.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, the England bowlers made early in-roads, dismissing three out of Sri Lanka's top four for single-digit scores, including debutant Charith Asalanka for a duck. At 46/3, the visitors were on the verge of yet another collapse on this tour before Kusal Perera and Wanindu Hasaranga dragged Sri Lanka out of trouble with a hard-fought 99-run stand.

Just when it looked like the game was starting to get away from England, Chris Woakes struck twice in two overs to send Hasaranga and Dhananjaya Lakshan back to the pavilion and trigger another collapse. Moeen Ali trapped Ramesh Mendis in front of the stumps before David Willey brought an end to Perera's one-man show as he holed out in the deep while attempting to clear the boundary on a well-made 74. The tail did not offer much resistance as Sri Lanka lost their last seven wickets for just 40 runs, going from 145/3 to 185 all-out.

Chris Woakes was the wrecker-in-chief for England, returning with figures of 4/18 in his 10 overs. He was well supported by David Willey who picked up three wickets, including the important scalp of Perera.

In response, England got off to a flying start as Jonny Bairstow raced to 43 off just 21 balls. However, Sri Lanka put the brakes on the scoring rate by scalping openers Bairstow and Liam Livingstone in two consecutive overs. Soon after Dushmantha Chameera sent skipper Eoin Morgan and Sam Billings packing as the scoreboard read 80/4 at the end of 12 overs.

England needed someone to help stabilise the innings and Root just did that by securing one end. He pounced on the bad balls and cautiously played out the others and along with Moeen Ali kept the scorecard ticking. Moeen, who got a reprieve on the first ball he faced when the keeper dropped him off Chameera, played the perfect supporting fiddle.

The duo continued without further trouble and Root brought up his 34th ODI fifty with ease. With less than 20 required, Chameera got his man when he bowled Moeen in the 32nd over, breaking the 91-run stand.

But it was too little too late for the visitors as Sam Curran and Root comfortably took England past the finishing line.

The second ODI will be played on Thursday, 1 July at The Oval.
