He should become the bus driver. Maybe when saud is 35 he will get a game. Pretty similar to when fawad was ignore so much earlier in his career.

As I've been saying for a while Saud's career has been going Fawad's way. I think we've been hearing about Saud since around 2015, no later than 2017. His career is being WASTED. He seems to be a meek fellow so that doesn't help his cause. Kamran Ghulam is another one. They are forced to carry them on tours because sometimes the selectors insist in their wisdom but then they don't even given them a game before dropping them. It happens again and again, while veterans play years beyond their expiration date, whether it's Hafeez or Malik or now Azhar or whoever, due to bhaichari or whatever personal sentiment they have. A horrible culture of self-abasement and flattery, rather than merit and opportunity.

Fawad was deliberately kept out of the side because Misbah and co wanted to give Asad Shafiq a confirmed spot. That choice costed Pakistan dearly as Asad was an inferior player and also lacked temperament to be consistent. Now Fawad shouldn't be sacrificed after 1 bad series. However it was unfair to play Agha ahead of Saud Shakeel.
Part of the problem is Pakistan plays too few test matches hence there is not enough matches to test the bench strength. 2 test series has no margin error, you can't experiment.

Pakistan is likely to go with winning combination (unnecessary obsession with winning 11) barring Shaheen's exclusion.

However this is how playing 11 should look like:

Abdullah
Imam
Shan
Babar
Fawad
Rizwan
Nawaz
Nouman
Hasan
Yasir
Naseem

Dimuth Karunaratne's Sri Lanka will look to bounce back in the second Test starting Sunday against an upbeat Pakistan team that is fresh off a morale-boosting win.

But the tourists have been hit by an injury to pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi, who played a key part in the team's four-wicket victory on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka have witnessed contrasting results at the Galle International Stadium in the past three weeks, and now head into their sixth straight Test at the venue since November.

In the first of their two Tests against Australia at the ground earlier this month, the hosts first lost inside three days on a vicious turner, then bounced back to beat the tourists on a radically different wicket to end the series level at 1-1.

For the first Test against Pakistan, the pitch was once again entirely different, with little help for the spinners, even on the final two days, when Asian tracks usually turn.

"There was a big difference in the wicket we played against Australia and here," Sri Lanka vice-captain Dhananjaya de Silva said.

"Normally on a Galle pitch the fourth and fifth days don't help the batsmen."

Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has stood out since his debut in the second Australia Test, where he got a match haul of 12 wickets.

He then bamboozled Pakistan with a total of nine wickets in the opening Test of this series.

But de Silva, an all-rounder who bowls off-spin, said Jayasuriya got little support from the other end against Pakistan.

"Only Prabath bowled a consistent line and length and we leaked runs from the other two spinners," said de Silva.

"It is difficult to keep a tight field when you are leaking runs from one side."

Mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana has been ruled out due to a finger injury and de Silva may be expected to play a bigger role with the ball alongside Ramesh Mendis and Jayasuriya.

Batsman Pathum Nissanka returns to the team after he contracted Covid in the middle of the second Australia Test.

The venue was shifted from Colombo to Galle due to the political unrest in Sri Lanka, and it is the hosts' final Test of the season, with their next red-ball series a tour to New Zealand in March.

'Remain positive'
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam believes Jayasuriya remains Sri Lanka's "main weapon" but was confident in his batsmen's ability.

"We will stick to our strengths and as batsmen remain positive," he said.

The visitors rode on opener Abdullah Shafique's unbeaten 160 to chase down a record 342 at the venue on a tense fifth day. The win gave them a 1-0 series lead.

Shafique is in elite company after the first six matches of his Test career, with 720 runs from 11 innings, behind only India's Sunil Gavaskar (912 runs from 12 innings), Australian great Don Bradman (862 from 12), and West Indies' George Headley (730 from 12).

Shaheen's absence due to a knee injury will hurt Pakistan, who rely on their quicks to get early wickets even on turning subcontinent pitches.

"Pakistan has always produced fast bowlers and they have also won matches on flat tracks," said Azam, who went with three quicks, including Hasan Ali and Naseem Shah, in the first match.

"But let's see, we will sit and discuss before the next match what combinations to play."

Pakistan could make a few changes to their team, including bringing in left-arm orthodox bowler Nauman Ali to bolster their spin attack.

Crucial World Test Championship points will be up for grabs for both teams, with Pakistan third and Sri Lanka sixth in the current standings.

SL will come harder in the next test as they did against Australia.

Pakistan will need to bring their A game. You dont win test matches from being 85-7 all the time.

I think that's the most likely option they'll go with anyway, Naseem, Hassan, and Faheem. But couldn't Hassan and Faheem open the bowling? It would be a little risky if one gets injured during the game, and there is no express pace, but I think that's a chance you have to take, and get in three spinners instead, give Nauman a chance. Wasn't it a mistake to have three pacers in the first test? It would have helped if SSA were fit, because then you can go with two pacers, just SSA and Hassan would be enough. I think Faheem unfortunately is no longer in their long-term plans.

I can't remember the last time Fahim has opened the bowling in tests he proberly could do a job thou.if one gets injured you would stil have 2 pacers and 2 spinners.the 3 spinner would be underutilised hence why I would go with an all rounder atleast offers more with the bat.

That will reduce the number of Batsmen further, Agha was playing as Batsman who can bowl. Fawad Alam can do that and also Shan Masood. However Shan Masood is not a good player of spin, Shan can replace Azhar Ali (I doubt Azhar will be dropped). So in place of Agha it should be Fawad Alam.

In place of Shaheen we can play Nauman if it is turning track. But Sri Lanka can make a green pitch (seeing that Pakistan is without their Spearhead). If green pitch than play 3 pacers, if spinning track play 3 spinners.
For 3 spinners play Nauman Ali. for 3 pacers play either of Faheem or Rauf.

Agha must go, he is not ready for this level.

Shan cant play spin? he wont a test match in pallekelle along with Younis khan chasing 370+ to win. Shan plays spin pretty well.

otherwise uve made some decent points.

PCB chairman Ramiz Raja has lauded the national team for its recent win against Sri Lanka in the Galle Test, saying the victory is at par with Pakistan's historic triumph over India in the 1987 Bangalore Test. Pakistan chased down a stiff 342-run target on the final day to register a four-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the opening Test in Galle to go 1-0 up in the two-match series.

"From a difficulty point of view I would say this is one of Pakistan's best Test wins in a run-chase probably the best. In terms of difficult conditions I would say the Galle win is at par with the victory we achieved in Bangalore against India on a turning pitch," Ramiz told a Pakistani news channel.

The former Test captain was part of the team led by Imran Khan that beat India in a low-scoring Test at Bangalore in 1987.

Ramiz feels giving a free hand to Babar helped him to build a strong team.

"The team is his property and I am happy to say that not only he as captain but other players also took full ownership of the team and performances," he said.

"I have never tried to interfere in team matters although as chairman I can and we have given Babar a free hand and he has made a good team.

"We should internally also give respect to this team they don't get the same respect internally that they get internationally." He said a proper environment and good communication was one of the reason behind the team's success.

"They will realize after a full circle is completed that unless your captain is strong your team can't move ahead. Until now I have not interfered in team issues. I just listen to what strategy they have in mind to win a series.

"A successful model is that we have given the environment to the captain and we have kept a good communication with players and that has led to solutions and a good feeling in the team." Ramiz also praised the performance of opener Abdullah Shafique, who scored a magnificent 160 not out in Pakistan's run chase of 344 runs.

"I think he (Abdullah) is a future superstar, in fact, he has already become a super star if you look at his record in Test cricket it is outstanding," he said.

"He is a classy and temperamentally strong player and remember it is never easy to open the innings. Specially in a fourth innings run chase. But the focus and calmness with which he played is a big achievement for him."

Saqlain Mushtaq speaking to the press:

Refused to say what changes to the team tomorrow, apart from the fact that a replacement will come in for Shaheen.

Said he has learnt 50 words of the "Sri Lankan" language as its important to know something about hosts culture.

"Naseem is very talented, has a lot of potential, he bowled with control and aggression against Australia and also took wickets, and bowled long spells also so he ticked all the boxes - We have a lot of faith on Naseem, May the Almighty give him more success"

"May ALLAH save Babar Azam from evil eyes; The whole world is talking about him which means that the world knows [about his skills]; The kind of people who are talking [praising] him are achievers and not just laymen; People who are praising Babar are those who have not only achieved themselves but understand the game thoroughly and know the beauty of the sport"

The following players have taken part in today’s top-up:

Babar Azam, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shan Masood, Saud Shakeel, Faheem Ashraf, Fawad Alam, Yasir Shah, Nauman Ali and Haris Rauf

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 55.000%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/bkyf69" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

I hope they don’t end up playing both Naseem and Haris, as that would be disastrous in terms of control. Faheem is nothing special, but is atleast steady and strengthens our batting somewhat.

Losing Sheena is a massive blow.

Feel bad for Sarfraz he is in the team but never gets a match- Of course Rizwan is much better

Babar confirms:

Babar Azam "unfortunately Shaheen won't play in the 2nd Test. In accordance with the situation and conditions Nauman Ali will replace him and we will go into the match with 2 pace-bowlers"

Fahim should come in for Shaheen and Fawad for Agha. Shan should ideally come in for Azhar as well but won't. Would be strange if the management decides to replace Shaheen with Nauman. 3 spinners are too much in any conditions. 2 spinners and 3 pacers are ideal.

So is Agha still playing or not? Cause our batting lineup is way too small with Rizwan at 5.

Galle, 23 July 2022: After surmounting the insurmountable, Pakistan on Saturday completed their preparations for the second and final Test against Sri Lanka, which begins tomorrow at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. The Babar Azam-led side are high on confidence entering this contest after rewriting the history books earlier in the week when they chased down 342 to post the highest successful run chase at Galle. It was also only the third instance of a side chasing down the score of over 100 at this venue, which goes on to underscore the magnitude of the task achieved by the Pakistan batters on a challenging and demanding spin-conducive surface.

“The morale is quite high in the camp as posting a good win gives you a lot of confidence,” Babar told PCB Digital on the eve of the second Test. “We had complete rest of one day and relaxed our bodies after spending five days in the field. It is very important to look after your body and look after your mental health. You stay on the toes for five days and your mind is constantly working under pressure during a match. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to look after yourself. A lot of credit goes to Cliffe [Deacon, team physiotherapist] for how he looks after us.

“We had a good session yesterday and are looking forward to the next Test. It was an intense competition with highs and lows so we are feeling good after winning it.”

The first Test was a perfect advert for Test cricket with the match swinging like a pendulum. Pakistan, at the back of Shaheen Afridi’s four-fer, were able to restrict Sri Lanka to 222. A splendid century from Pakistan captain Babar brought Pakistan within touching distance of Sri Lanka’s first innings total after the visitors slipped to seven for 85. Left-arm orthodox Mohammad Nawaz, making a comeback after six years, recorded his maiden international five-fer and was duly supported by another spinner making a comeback, Yasir Shah, who snared three wickets, before a monumental 160 not out from Abdullah Shafique led Pakistan to history on the final day.

This feat, according to Babar, was possible because “our hard work and belief” and each individual’s eagerness to play his role in helping the side cross the line. “We are chasing scores at different venues that people often think are not achievable, but we have the faith. We are looking to make records when we take the field and it is our hard work and belief that is making it happen. We are united and players are stepping up and looking for opportunities to deliver for the team. We look for solutions for the challenges we encounter through partnerships or through our bowling plans. We plan for every situation. Of course, we are sportspeople and mistakes do happen, but we learn from them, and make sure we do not repeat them.”

The win has put Pakistan on the third spot in the nine-team ICC World Test Championship points table and with a win percentage of over 54, Pakistan, who are to play five Tests at home later in the year, have a serious chance of making it to the second edition’s final. Pakistan are eager to grab this opportunity and consolidate their chances for the coveted final berth.

Pakistan will take the field without their premier fast bowler Shaheen Afridi after he was ruled out of the second Test because of a knee injury sustained on the fourth day of the first Test. With the Galle surface providing assistance to spin bowlers, Pakistan have included Nauman Ali in the XI and have decided to go with two fast bowlers. Confirming the combination, Babar said, “We will, definitely, miss Shaheen because of the way he bowls. He bowls with aggression and gets us wickets upfront that helps the team. It is unfortunate that he is not in the side, but considering the conditions, we have included a spinner, Nauman Ali, and will go with two fast bowlers in tomorrow’s match.”

Agha 100 percent should not play now that it confirms that Nuaman will play Agha is now playing as a batter if he does play.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to inform you that Angelo Mathews will play in his 100th Test Match, when Sri Lanka takes on Pakistan in the 2nd Test Match of the ongoing test series, at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.

Mathews, the former All-format Captain of the National Team is the 06th Sri Lankan player to achieve this significant feat.

In view of Angelo Mathew’s special achievement, Sri Lanka Cricket will hold a brief ceremony to felicitate the player before the commencement of the 2nd Test Match on the 24th July 2022, at the venue.

Dr. Jayantha Dharmadasa, the Vice President of International Cricket of Sri Lanka Cricket, and former Sri Lanka Great Chaminda Vaas will grace the occasion, while his team-mates, his family and the fans will be among the participants at the ceremony.

Surprised that there is just one change.

I thought Fawad Alam would have been brought into the starting XI.

Good player of spin who has a decent record in Asian conditions.

Expect the unexpected with this thick tank, even last test was a mircle win despite that playing XI. Just zero cricketing common sense the managment have and Babar isn't the sharpest tool either sadly when it comes to team selection.

Is it confirmed that there is only one change?

I think Babar only mentioned that who Shaheen's replacement will be or did I miss something?

I think this pretty much confirms Agha won't play unless we are underestimating how crazy the TM decision making is.

I really hope they don't play that tailender fawad Alam.
He is absolute garbage player with so poor form.
I hope selectors grow a spine and drop him forever.

Salman Agha looks very poor batsman.
Shan is the obvious choice he has been in terrific form. Based on current form he should definitely be given a chance.

I won't mind saud shakeel as well. They have to play him at some point. He can be tried here and we will find out if he is made for this level or not.

If Agha plays this test, it would be stupidity beyond belief. We have 4 batters only and were rescued by 2 special innings in the 1st test. If the selection committee cannot see this, they need to be sacked.
Nauman or Faheem will have to play instead of Afridi. I would play Nauman as it is a spinners track. Hence, even more the case for dropping Agha who looks useless.

Shan in - very obvious choice.

The cowardly selectors will not drop walking wicket Azhar until he has grandchildren. He can only play on batting paradises these days but the seniority complex once again is holding Pakistan back. We need to get rid of Azhar and Fawad.

Sri Lankans are trailing in the series. A must win match for them , expecting a very result oriented pitch to be laid.

How much more spin can it take? It cant be any more result orientated than 1st Test

Sri Lanka's teenage spinner Dunith Wellalage has been included in the final 12 for the second Test against Pakistan in Galle, skipper Dimuth Karunaratne said on Saturday.

The 19-year-old Wellalage, a left-arm orthodox who awaits his Test debut, seems a likely replacement for injured spinner Maheesh Theekshana as the hosts look to bounce back in the two-match series after their opening loss.

"Dunith Wellalage is back in the squad" after being released from the Test squad for a domestic match, Karunaratne told reporters.

"Asitha Fernando is back in the 12. Those are the only changes," he added on the eve of Angelo Mathews' landmark 100th Test starting Sunday.

Wellalage, also handy with the bat, played a key role with his nine wickets in Sri Lanka's 3-2 one-day series win over Australia last month, and could partner with Prabath Jayasuriya in the final Test.

Pakistan rode on opener Abdullah Shafique's unbeaten 160 to chase down a record 342 at the Galle International Stadium on a tense fifth day to go one up.

Jayasuriya waged a lone battle with his left-arm spin to claim a match haul of nine wickets, but found little help from the other end.

"We did pretty well in the first Test but the conditions were not to our assistance," said skipper Karunaratne.

"Another area that we need to work on is first innings batting."

The tourists have been hit by an injury to pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi, who took four first innings wickets in the opener.

"He is inspirational, leads the bowling unit from the front, and we will miss his aggression and his presence," said Pakistan coach Saqlain Mushtaq.

"The way he comes and gives us the breakthrough at the start... hopefully the other bowlers will step up."

The pitch at Galle has changed character in all three matches played in the past few weeks, including two Tests against Australia.

Sri Lankan players believed the pitch went flat on the final two days when Pakistan batted, but Saqlain said his batsmen were up to the task.

"I believe the pitch turned from day one and it kept spinning, but I think our boys showed some really good character in this match," said the former off-spinner.

"It was a show of determination, patience and temperament by our players."

Sri Lanka 12: Oshada Fernando, Dimuth Karunaratne (capt), Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Dhananjaya de Silva, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Ramesh Mendis, Dinuth Wellalage, Prabath Jayasuriya, Kasun Rajitha, Asitha Fernando

How are Pak favourites...it was a miracle they won the first one and now they have wellalge which makes their batting even stronger. Srilankan batting will not keep failing

You're right, I can't remember the last time Faheem opened the bowling either--maybe once or twice when someone got injured, if I'm not misremembering. He's steady and will give you a lot of overs. Depends on whether you want 3 spinners or 3 pacers, I prefer the former on this wicket. But all this discussion is moot, more than likely they will go with the least possible changes they can get away with. Shaheen's injury gives them an excuse, they'll be content with a single change to replace him, most likely. It would be pathetic to go in again with so little batting, but this is how they think.

Surprised that there is just one change.

I thought Fawad Alam would have been brought into the starting XI.

Good player of spin who has a decent record in Asian conditions.

Saw a video many months ago of Mohd Yousuf responding to a question saying Agha is the best (emerging) batting talent in the country along with Saud. Yousuf has never been a fan of Fawad and I don’t think Fawad gonna get a long rope.
For me, Saud/Ghulam deserved a slot. Fawad very unlucky to miss out

Pak in a solid position to close this series out. Aim for the 2-0.

Based on what Babar has said, he was hinting at just one change Nauman in for Shaheen.

Babar is a top player but an awful selector. If Saqi is doing the selecting then he needs to be sacked. How can you play a test with 4 specialist batsman

Can't judge Aghas batting on the rank turner of the previous test.
