300 runs were more than enough on this surface, and SA would have had to bat an extra 15, 20 overs.

When Lanka got to 400 odd, and South Africa 12/2 the match was gone.
No point losing the match without giving the opposition a run for their money.
And South Africa had faith in their ability to save a match they've done it plenty of times before. The onus was on Lanka to win the match not South Africa.

EVen though we drop back down to number 2 this actually makes me feel even better about our series win in SA, they really are an incredibly difficult team to beat even in a single test match let alone a test series.

Precisely. Hail Mathews for giving SA a series win in SL. Dude is a pretty poor and defensive captain. Declaration was too late and SL was making useless runs while wasting precious time.

SL needed to win this test, not SA. Still SL kept making useless runs despite rain predictions. SA clearly showed in their first inning that they simply want to not lose this test. There was no point in batting for runs which was not needed.

Though to be honest I'm not sure how I rate this new post Kallis and Smith team.

I don't rate Peterson or Duminy at all with the bat and Elgar doesn't look particularly special.

South Africa have still earned the number 1 ranking but I'm confident we can bring them down.

Your bats aren't anything special either. If there is a team that will figure out Johnson it's South Africa.
