The appalling cases of sexual harassment in India

Bengaluru Police arrests serial sexual offender who targeted women walking alone

Bengaluru police arrested a man accused of sexually harassing women alone in the evenings in Bengaluru. The arrest followed a December 2 complaint from Sunkadakatte. The accused is in custody.

Bengaluru police arrested a serial sexual offender accused of targeting women moving alone during the evenings in the city.

The accused, identified as Vinod, allegedly stalked women after 6 pm, focusing on those walking alone or riding two-wheelers.

Police said he would wait for riders to slow down near potholes, run towards them, forcibly grab them, and behave obscenely.

According to the police, the accused had been committing such acts for over a month and was emboldened as no formal complaints had been filed earlier.

The arrest followed a complaint from a woman who was assaulted near Srinivasa Circle in Sunkadakatte on December 2. Her husband, who was following her in a car, attempted to catch the accused, but he managed to escape.

A call to emergency number 112 led to the accused being traced and arrested with the assistance of Hoysala police.

The accused is currently in custody, and further investigation is underway.

In another incident from July, in Bengaluru’s Govindapura area, a man was arrested for following a woman in public, sexually harassing her and biting her on the lips after she stepped out to buy groceries, police said.

The accused allegedly behaved obscenely before the victim managed to escape and file a complaint, leading to his arrest on charges of sexual harassment and public indecency.

‘Illegal Detention, Sexual Assault’: Woman Tortured at Noida Police Station; SC Seeks Centre's Response

The woman claimed that she was subjected to 14 hours of "illegal detention, custodial sexual assault, torture and coercion" by police personnel at the Sector 126 police station in Noida late on the night of December 3.

After a woman advocate alleged illegal detention and custodial sexual assault at a Noida police station, the Supreme Court on Friday (December 19) sought responses from the Centre, Uttar Pradesh government, and others, according to a PTI report. The woman further alleged torture and coercion at the police station.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and N V Anjaria also directed the commissioner of police of Gautam Buddha Nagar district to ensure that CCTV camera footage from the police station for the concerned duration is not deleted or destroyed, and kept in a sealed cover.
The apex court was hearing the plea filed by the woman advocate.

What All Did The Woman Allege?

The woman claimed that she was subjected to 14 hours of "illegal detention, custodial sexual assault, torture and coercion" by police personnel at the Sector 126 police station in Noida late on the night of December 3 while she was discharging her professional duty towards her client, according to a PTI report.

Senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for the petitioner, said it was a very gross case where a woman advocate was "sexually mauled" and kept under illegal detention.
"This is a very gross case happening right around Delhi. If it is happening in Noida, just imagine the plight of the entire country," Singh said.
The bench said normally it would not have entertained the plea under Article 32 of the Constitution, and would have given liberty to the petitioner to approach the jurisdictional high court.

CCTV Cameras At Police Stations in Rajasthan

The top court said it was already dealing with a separate case relating to the installation and functioning of CCTV cameras at police stations in Rajasthan.
"However, considering the serious allegations made in the petition, and the fact that the issue also relates to the blocking of CCTV cameras for the duration of the incident at the police station, we are entertaining this petition. Issue notice, returnable on January 7," the bench said.

It added, "In the meantime, the Commissioner of Police, Gautam Buddh Nagar, is directed to ensure that the CCTV footage of the concerned police station for the concerned duration is not destroyed or deleted and is kept in a sealed cover."
After the bench passed the order, Singh raised the issue of protection for the petitioner.
"They will dare not touch her after passing of this order," the bench said.
During the hearing, Singh said the CCTV cameras at the police station should be immediately seized. He also said that the complainant was beaten up and was forced to withdraw his complaint.
The bench initially asked why the petitioner did not approach the Allahabad High Court with her grievance.
"We have all the sympathy. Let the high court take appropriate action," the bench observed. Singh said the apex court may transfer the petition to the high court.
"The difficulty is if we start entertaining this (plea), all matters from all around Delhi will come to the Supreme Court only," the bench said.

Singh then urged the bench to take this as some kind of a "test case".
The top court is also monitoring the CCTV matter, which is very important, he said. Singh said the apex court should send a signal to the entire country that such incidents would not be tolerated at all.
The bench then agreed to hear the plea and issued notice on it. The plea said the petitioner was targeted solely for discharging her professional duty and insisting on mandatory registration of an FIR for her grievously injured client.
"The petitioner's life was immediately endangered when a government pistol was placed upon her neck by the police staff, coercing her to surrender her mobile phone password. She was also subjected to continuous threats of being killed in a fake encounter," the plea claimed.

It is alleged that the officers maliciously disabled or removed CCTV systems from the police station premises, which was in flagrant violation of the binding mandate laid down by the apex court.
"The subsequent conduct of the state respondents compounds the violation. They failed to initiate a mandatory FIR, failed to secure evidence, and are actively protecting the accused officers, who continue to issue threats of counter FIRs against the petitioner," the plea claimed.

The petitioner sought a direction to the Uttar Pradesh DGP to forthwith register an FIR against the police officers posted at the Sector 126 police station on the date of the incident under the relevant penal provisions.
Besides other prayers, the plea also sought a direction to the Uttar Pradesh government to entrust the investigation of the matter to a Special Investigation Team or the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Bengaluru Horror Caught on CCTV: Woman Assaulted, Harassed By Man In Broad Daylight - Video

A shocking incident occurred in Bengaluru, where a 21-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by a man in broad daylight. The attack, captured on CCTV, shows the victim being harassed and physically assaulted by Naveen Kumar, who had been pressuring her for a relationship after they met on Instagram.

Bengaluru: A disturbing incident of public violence has come to light in Bengaluru after CCTV footage surfaced showing a 21-year-old woman being allegedly assaulted and harassed in broad daylight by a man who had been persistently pressuring her to enter into a relationship. The incident, which took place on December 22 at around 3.20 pm, has triggered widespread outrage, particularly over the apparent inaction of bystanders present at the scene.
According to the footage, the woman was standing beside a scooty, believed to be an online ride, when the accused arrived at the spot in a car. He is seen taking her purse and rummaging through it before moving towards her and allegedly groping her. Moments later, the man repeatedly strikes the woman on her head and back and drags her along the road, even as two to three bystanders look on without intervening.

Acquaintance Through Instagram, FIR Reveals

As per the First Information Report (FIR), Naveen and the victim became acquainted through Instagram in 2024 and remained in regular contact through phone calls and messages. Over time, however, he allegedly began pressuring the woman to enter into a relationship. The woman consistently resisted his advances, police said.
On December 22, Naveen reportedly went to the woman’s paying guest (PG) accommodation in his car. When he spotted her standing outside the PG, he confronted her, dragged her on the road and assaulted her in full public view.
Following a complaint, the Bengaluru Police registered an FIR and took the accused into custody. Police officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the full sequence of events and any additional offences that may apply.

Bengaluru flat association booked for ‘settling’ sexual assault, drug cases internally

The Provident Sunworth Apartments’ residents’ association allegedly framed its own set of bylaws and imposed monetary penalties on residents accused of crimes.

The Bengaluru police have registered a criminal case against the Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA) of Provident Sunworth Apartments in southwest Bengaluru and the private security agency employed by the complex, alleging that they illegally handled criminal offences internally instead of reporting them to the law enforcement authorities.

According to media reports, the apartment association, located in Doddabele under the Kumbalagodu police station limits, allegedly framed its own set of bylaws, imposed monetary penalties on residents accused of crimes, and conducted unauthorised inquiries with the assistance of Tyko Security Agency. These actions resulted in the suppression of serious criminal cases and allowed accused persons to evade legal consequences.

Preliminary findings indicate that multiple offences, including possession and consumption of narcotic substances, thefts, and sexual harassment of women, including domestic workers. Some of the alleged offences involved residents, including individuals from outside Karnataka, such as students residing in the complex.

The case came to light after an anonymous letter was sent to the Kumbalagodu police, prompting an internal inquiry. The RWA had allegedly “resolved” more than 10 criminal incidents internally over the past few years, without lodging formal complaints or informing law enforcement.

Instead of following legal procedures, the association is accused of questioning the accused persons within the complex, levying fines ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000, and either allowing them to continue living there or forcing them to vacate the premises. Fines were reportedly collected from the basement office of the apartment complex, both in cash and through online transfers.

Police are investigating the allegations and efforts are underway to identify residents who were fined or forced to vacate the premises since 2023. As some residents were fined and allegedly made to leave the complex, it has complicated efforts to trace both victims and accused persons.

Based on these findings, an FIR has been registered at the Kumbalagodu police station under Sections 211, 238 and 239 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deal with suppression of information, disappearance of evidence, and failure to report offences. Sections 3(5) and 3(6), along with provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, have also been invoked.

Authorities have reiterated that residential associations and private security agencies cannot act as parallel justice systems and that all criminal offences must be reported to the police without exception.

Police in Bengaluru's Bagalgunte arrested a 29-year-old man on charges of alleged cheating, sexual exploitation and theft after duping a woman of nearly Rs 20 lakh and 200 grams of gold under the guise of a romantic relationship.

The case, which began in Nelamangala, reveals a chain of events involving two sisters. Police said Shubham Shukla first befriended a minor girl and allegedly assaulted her before using her to gain access to her family. He later targeted the elder sister, luring her into a live-in relationship.

Shukla convinced the victim to lie to her parents, claiming she was moving to Mumbai for work. Instead, the couple stayed together in Bengaluru for three years, during which he allegedly siphoned off money and valuables. The victim later discovered Shukla was already married. When confronted, he promised to divorce his wife, but continued to subject her to daily abuse.

Unable to bear the harassment, the woman eventually escaped and lodged a complaint. Police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and cheating charges. Shukla was arrested and remains in custody as investigations continue.

Bengaluru woman recounts harassment during Metro ride, accuses police of going soft on accused

A young woman in Bengaluru has accused the police of failing to act strictly against a man who allegedly molested her inside a Metro coach. The accused was taken to the police station but was released with a warning, sparking criticism from the victim on social media.

Bengaluru:
A 45-year-old man was taken to a police station after he allegedly molested a young woman while travelling in a Bengaluru Metro train. The victim later posted a video on social media claiming that the police did not take strict action and instead let the accused go with only a warning, citing his age and his drunken state. Preliminary information suggests that the accused, identified as Muthappa from Belagavi, allegedly touched the woman inappropriately and smiled at her, which left her deeply disturbed. Angered by his behaviour, the woman confronted him and alerted Metro security personnel.

Accused apologised publicly at majestic station

Metro security staff intervened and questioned the man. As the situation escalated, Muthappa reportedly apologised in public and even fell at the feet of commuters at Kempegowda (Majestic) Metro Station. However, the woman insisted on taking the accused to the Upparpet Police Station.

Police registered NCR, released accused after warning

The police filed a Non-Cognisable Report (NCR) for inappropriate behaviour and released the man after he apologised. Officials believe that Muthappa, a housekeeper at a private company, was intoxicated when he was brought to the police station.

Victim slams police on Instagram

On Friday, the woman from Arekere uploaded a video on Instagram accusing the police of showing leniency and expressing sympathy for the accused. She alleged that the man repeatedly tried to touch her despite her moving away. After getting off at Majestic, she recorded a video of him walking around the station while allegedly smiling at her. She also admitted that she slapped him before approaching security personnel.

Police deny claims of inaction

The police dismissed allegations of inaction and said that investigators had asked the victim to file a formal complaint. However, according to officials, the woman's parents intervened and advised her against registering a First Information Report (FIR).

'Cried, Begged for Mercy': Woman Constable Stripped, Filmed in Chhattisgarh Amid Anti-Mining Protest

Violent protests over a coal mining project in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh allegedly led to two men stripping and assaulting an on-duty woman constable. A disturbing video showed her pleading for mercy as protesters abused and threatened her, raising serious concerns over women’s safety.

As ongoing protests against a coal mining project in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district turned violent, an on-duty woman constable's uniform was allegedly stripped by two men last week, TOI reported. The incident came to light after the video of the incident was shared by the All India Mahila Congress on Friday (December 2), questioning women's safety.
The horrifying video showed an on-duty woman constable falling to the ground and begging the men to stop stripping her clothes. Addressing them as "brothers", she said that she had made a mistake in coming there.

The men threatened to strip her while questioning her about why she came there. They continued to strip her clothes. The woman allegedly stated that she was deputed to the protest site from another location and had come there mistakenly, according to a TOI report.

Even after stripping her clothes, the men did not stop and hurled obscene abuses while beating the woman.

The footage was allegedly recorded by the protesters themselves, showing the woman crying and begging for mercy.
Even the protesters were heard shouting at her, asking why she came there. They further threatened to beat her with slippers while asking her to flee the spot.

Raigarh Police Arrests Two Men

The Raigarh police have arrested two men for harassing the woman constable. In a similar incident, another video came to light, which allegedly showed a woman Town Inspector (TI) being kicked.
This comes as a violent protest has been happening against a public hearing held on December 8 at Dhaurabhatha.

Why People Are Protesting in Chhattisgarh?

People from 14 affected villages under the (Gare Pelma) Sector-I coal block in the Tamnar area have been staging a sit-in protest at CHP chowk in Libra village since December 12 against a public hearing held for the project on December 8 at Dhaurabhatha, a statement issued by the district administration said.
On December 27, the mob also stormed into the coal handling plant of Jindal Power Limited, and torched a conveyor belt, two tractors and other vehicles, besides vandalising the office premises, PTI reported.
Tension prevailed after protestors indulged in stone-pelting and set ablaze a police bus, a jeep and an ambulance, besides damaging several other government vehicles, the officials said.

Woman Raped, Assaulted Inside Moving Van For 3 Hours On Gurugram-Faridabad Road; Thrown Out, Gets 12 Stitches On Face

A 25-year-old woman was allegedly raped and assaulted inside a moving van for nearly three hours on the Gurugram–Faridabad Road before being thrown out of the vehicle, leaving her with severe facial injuries that required 12 stitches.

A 25-year-old woman was allegedly raped and assaulted inside a moving van for nearly three hours before being pushed out of the vehicle on the Gurugram–Faridabad Road, police said. The attack left her with serious facial injuries that required 12 stitches.
According to police, the incident occurred late Monday night after the woman accepted a lift in a van when she was unable to find transport around midnight.

Two men were inside the vehicle. Instead of taking her home, they allegedly drove through isolated stretches of Faridabad, holding her captive as dense fog reduced visibility and movement on the road.

Based on a complaint filed by the woman's family, a case was registered at Kotwali police station. A crime branch team detained two suspects on Tuesday, police sources said.

As per the complaint, the woman had left her home around 8.30 pm after an argument with her mother. She told her sister she was going to a friend's house and would return soon. However, when she finally left, it was close to midnight and there was no transport available.
She then accepted a lift with the accused duo.
Police said the van was driven towards the Gurugram-Faridabad Road and taken beyond the Hanuman temple on the stretch.
The woman reportedly screamed for help, but her cries went unheard due to the cold weather, fog and sparse traffic at night.
The family has alleged that the two men took turns to rape her inside the moving vehicle.
Around 3 am on Tuesday, the woman was allegedly pushed out of the van near Mula Hotel at Raja Chowk in SGM Nagar while it was still in motion. She later managed to contact her sister, who rushed her to a hospital

Dharamshala College Ragging Horror: 19-Year-Old Girl Dies After Harassment, 'Objectionable Acts' On Campus; Professor Booked

A 19-year-old degree college student from Dharamshala died after alleged ragging, harassment and sexual misconduct on campus.

A 19-year-old degree college student died in Dharamshala after alleged ragging, harassment and sexual misconduct on campus. Police have registered an FIR under Sections 75, 115(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3 of the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009.

The FIR was lodged at a local police station on January 1, after a complaint by the victim's father.
According to the complaint, his daughter, a second-year student, was allegedly subjected to ragging and harassment on campus.

The complaint alleges that on September 18, 2025, three fellow students - identified as Harshita, Akriti and Komolika - assaulted the victim and intimidated her. It also accuses a college professor, Ashok Kumar, of engaging in "objectionable acts" with the student.

Following the alleged incidents, the victim's health reportedly deteriorated due to fear and mental distress.
She was treated at multiple hospitals before being admitted to DMC Hospital in Ludhiana, where she died during treatment on December 26.
The complainant stated that due to his daughter's critical condition and mental trauma, he was unable to inform the police immediately.
Police have registered a case against the three students and the professor named in the complaint and have begun an investigation.
Dharamshala Superintendent of Police Ashok Ratan confirmed the registration of the FIR and said the probe is at an early stage. "We have registered an FIR. The deceased is from Dharamshala - this is an investigation at a preliminary stage. The sexual harassment and ragging case is under active investigation," he said.
The SP clarified that sexual harassment charges were added after new facts emerged. "Sexual harassment was not included earlier. When facts come to light, we will have a fair trial," he said.
Referring to an earlier complaint, Ratan said, "The 20th December complaint was against girls. We cannot confirm this (sexual harassment)."
He also said the student had been admitted to multiple hospitals. "She was admitted in seven hospitals. Her admission was in multiple hospitals," he added.
The SP further clarified that the FIR was registered based on the father's complaint and that there is no mention of caste-based targeting. "There is no mention that she belonged to a certain community and she was ragged because of it (caste)," he said.

A distressing video of the 19-year-old Dharamshala student, who died after being ragged and sexually harassed, has emerged on social media, in which she alleged that her college professor harassed her multiple times. In the video, the girl was seen lying on a hospital bed, speaking about the horrific incident.

The teenage girl, a student of the Government Degree College in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, died on December 26. Following this, her father registered a complaint. The girl recalled the professor's name, saying, "Ashok sir", and when asked what the professor would do, she alleged, "Ajeeb ajeeb harkate karte the. Peeche padh jaate the (He would do strange things, be after me)."

When asked for more details, the girl hesitated and said that he used to touch her (while pointing to her chest). Following the alleged incidents, the victim's health reportedly deteriorated due to fear and mental distress.

She was treated at multiple hospitals before being admitted to DMC Hospital in Ludhiana, where she died during treatment on December 26.

The SP further clarified that the FIR was registered based on the father's complaint and that there is no mention of caste-based targeting. "There is no mention that she belonged to a certain community and she was ragged because of it (caste)," he said.

'Behave Normally': Teen Shooter Details Sexual Assault, Threats And Coach's 'Complaint To Mom'

A 17-year-old shooter has accused national shooting coach Ankush Bharadwaj of sexually assaulting her in a Faridabad hotel after a shooting event on December 16. In her police complaint, the teenager alleged that Bharadwaj threatened to ruin her career, told her to "behave normally" and later complained to her parents that she "doesn't listen" to him.

A 17-year-old national-level shooter has accused her coach, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ankush Bharadwaj, of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel room in Faridabad. She alleged that the coach later tried to silence her by threatening her career and complaining to her parents.
In her detailed complaint to the police, the teenager described what she called a traumatic sequence of events that unfolded after a national-level shooting competition.

On December 16, she was in Delhi for a national-level event at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range. As she was preparing to leave after the match, Bharadwaj allegedly called her and asked her to wait so they could discuss her performance.

The teenager stated that he later asked her to come to a five-star hotel in Faridabad. She said she waited in the lobby before being asked to come up to his room.

In her complaint, the 17-year-old said she was sitting on a chair inside the room when Bharadwaj offered to "crack her back". She refused. She alleged that he then forced her onto the bed and sexually assaulted her. The survivor said she resisted and managed to push him away.
She further alleged that Bharadwaj threatened to destroy her career if she disclosed what had happened and told her to "behave normally" around him. He later dropped her home, she said.
"I was scared, and I did not say anything to anyone... Ankush Bharadwaj Sir complained to my parents that I don't listen to him. My mother scolded me, and I could not sleep at night. When my mother asked me why I was stressed, I told her everything, and she brought me to the police station," the teenager said in her complaint.
As per her mother, the shooter remained in shock after the incident, and opened up only on January 4. "After this incident, she remained in shock. She could not gather the courage to discuss with us. Ankush was also busy with matches, and she did not meet him for training after this. She became quiet and seemed very upset after this incident."
"I kept asking her that she looks upset and depressed. She finally broke down on January 4 and told me
everything."
Bharadwaj has been suspended from his role as a national shooting coach following the allegations and now faces charges under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Bharadwaj has been booked under Section 6, which deals with aggravated penetrative sexual assault, along with provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to criminal intimidation.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) confirmed Bharadwaj's suspension.

Shooting Coach Ankush Bhardwaj, Husband Of Olympian & Accused in Sexual Assault Case, Suspended

A national shooting coach, Ankush Bhardwaj, has been suspended by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) following allegations of sexual harassment from a 17-year-old trainee. The minor accused him of assault in a hotel room in Faridabad after a training session.

Faridabad: A national shooting coach has been suspended by the sport’s apex body after a minor trainee accused him of sexual harassment and assault, triggering a police case in Haryana and a formal inquiry by the federation. Ankush Bhardwaj, a prominent member of India’s shooting coaching staff and husband of Olympian Anjum Moudgil, has been suspended by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) following allegations of sexual harassment by a 17-year-old shooter. The minor has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by Bhardwaj in a hotel room in Faridabad, after which an FIR was registered by the Haryana Police.

FIR filed, inquiry underway

Confirming the development, NRAI said a case has been lodged against Bhardwaj in Faridabad and disciplinary action has been initiated. “NRAI has suspended him and we will issue a show-cause notice,” NRAI secretary Rajiv Bhatia told PTI. He added, “He has been suspended on moral grounds. Now, he has to prove himself innocent. Till the inquiry is not completed, he will not be associated with any coaching activity.”

According to the FIR, the incident allegedly took place in Surajkund last month after a training session at the Karni Singh Range. The minor, who has been training under Bhardwaj since August last year, stated that she was left traumatised by the alleged assault and disclosed the incident to her mother on January 1 after repeated questioning.

Bhatia said Bhardwaj was part of the 37-member coaching staff recommended by NRAI after the Paris Olympics in 2024. “It was on the recommendation of the NRAI that he was appointed by SAI as one of the coaches. It is a case of sexual harassment which happened in Surajkund,” he said, referring to the Sports Authority of India.

Who Is Ankush Bhardwaj

Ankush Bhardwaj is a well-known name in Indian shooting circles, having won gold in the 50-metre pistol event at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games before later transitioning into coaching. In 2010, he was banned by the Sports Authority of India after testing positive for beta blockers, a charge he had then attributed to medication taken for a mild headache, claiming he was unaware it would impact the test result. He returned to the sport in 2012 and went on to win medals at international competitions. Currently based in Mohali, Bhardwaj runs the Salvo Shooting Range in Sector 86, which has multiple branches, and is among the 13 national pistol coaches appointed by the National Rifle Association of India. He is married to two-time Olympian Anjum Moudgil.

Past doping ban

Bhardwaj, a former pistol shooter, had earlier served a doping ban in 2010 for the use of a beta-blocker during his competitive career. The NRAI said the inquiry will continue alongside the police investigation, and further action will be taken based on its outcome.
