The best bowling attack in the world?

My opinion - Pak's attack is too inconsistent. There's just one bowler in there that I would say is world class and that is Ajmal. Junaid is hit or miss and the others are a revolving door of players.

Yaah, bowling unit not consistent at all. Ajmal is world class but even he goes though the whole match with 40+ average every 1 out of 3 match. See 11 tests out of his total 33,

Ajmal.jpg

Yaah, those were not turning pitches and Ajmal is not effective on flatter wickets. But if you are dependent on Ajmal then understandably Pakistani bowling unit looks not so good on non-turning wickets. I think Pakistan has a top class bowling unit in Test format on turners but it stops there.

Every spinner goes through it. We all know the impact swann had in england bowling right? But even his average was 40+ in 25 out of 60 Tests he played. He remained wicketless in 8 tests.

I'd stick my neck out and say that in LOI's we have the best attack in the world.

But we're on the same level as NZ and England in Tests, with Australia and SA ahead of us...

Eng was lot less dependent on Swan than Pakistan is on Ajmal. Point is - if you are dependent on one bowler and he is not effective on certain surfaces then you are in trouble as a bowling unit.

You won't be too wrong here. Pakistan has the strongest case in ODIs when you consider all kinds of surfaces taken together.

When it comes to spin and pace together, clearly Pakistan are miles ahead. Pace alone then either Australia/South Africa at the moment. Spin - Pakistan followed by India and Sri Lanka.

No, not necessarily. The only problem with our pace department is new ball bowling. Altho i dont rate talha, he still has inswingers on non supportive tracks and junaid has reverse swing. With experience, they will learn to manipulate like :asif did. You are downplaying us too much. Especially since we also rely on rehman a lot too on spin conditions. Since we have been playing a lot on spin wickets we obviously are gonna rely on spin. Thing is people dont understand how important :rehman is. He bowled brilliantly vs SL.

That's roughly 50% game for pacers and most teams have at least 3 pacers. Using the new ball well is very critical aspect of any bowling unit.

Well pakistanis are largely known for their reverse swing which you cant do with the new ball :gul

Wasim was there for Pakistan to do it with new ball in entire 90s. Then you had Asif who used to do it with new ball. I remember some other not so good bowlers who used to do it as well. So in last 25 years, I think Pakistan had some one for at least 20 years and used the new ball well. Right now, it gets wasted and then reverse swing doesn't come into the play in many venues. I think it's mainly the SC pitches where you get very good reverse swings if bowler knows how to do it.

We've gone off topic but what I'm trying to say is that our bowling still ranks with the best and we aren't as reliant on Ajmal as you think. :junaid :rehman :)

Saeed Ajmal is overrated in Tests. He has never delivered on a wicket that doesn't aid spin. Actually there is no standout spinner in Test cricket these days.
Pretty much all of them do well on turners but struggle heavily on bouncy and fast paced wickets.

Our pace attack is very average and Australia, South Africa and New Zealand are way ahead.

On paper, England is as well but they are collectively poor at the moment.

In terms of spin, we are still top.

If AUS/SA bowls day in day out in UAE, I would love to see what they will become... We say how Auses bowled in India ;-)

Junaid is better than bout, he gets dream pitches and condition in NZ... Remember how Junaid torn apart Indian even in ODI when played in January in India...

On the other hand UAE is not given assistant to any body lately, flat as hell, they need to find a new venue... It's the patients of out bowlers who can still play...

Junaid is hit or miss and the others are a revolving door of players. It's hard to judge because you've rotated so many players in and out of your attack. Look at the stats for players who have played for Pakistan in Tests in the last year alone. Other than Ajmal nobody else really stands out. Rehman maybe.

But this is PakPassion so obviously a lot of homeboy support, and fair enough :D

I am not sure if Auses are consistent?

They can' bowl on slow pitches of SC, they can't reverse either.

They heavily dependent upon Johnson, if he does not fire, they struggle... We need to see the elasticity of Johnson new found mojo...

As far as Pakistan is concerned UAE is a bad venue, I am not happy with it, wickets are very flat and slow, don't turn, even on day 5, it's easy to score... Grounds are very green so difficult to reverse as well... It's a donkey's work... These Venus are making bowlers bowl very defensive lengths, on top of that we have a defensive captain. This is not good for Pakistani cricket.

If they put grass, toss become critical, first day and half it's bowling friendly, then it dies down...

We have not lost a test series in UAE but did not win many either... UAE is hurting Pakistan in producing good bowlers, UAE does not suite Pakistan style of bowling...

In Pakistan we had more options, we had variety Karachi was swing friendly, Sialkot for green, even Rawalpindi and Peshawar can assist fast bowlers. Reverse swing is possible many places. Spinning tracks are also possible in quite ad few places... UAE you have two grounds and lot of limitations :-(

You are right, Pakistan don't have a good new ball bowler, I am afraid UAE is not a good for developing one either... I doubt even Asif would have done much in UAE consistently...

Imagine if Auses only play in adilade, what a confidence booster for rookie pacer/seamer?

Junaid maybe better than Boult in ODIs, but Boult is far ahead in Tests.

So far Junaid hasn't achieved anything in Tests apart from running through SL with the old ball.

He can't take wickets and swing the new ball and is very reliant on reverse swing. In most places, he will not get that and he won't be effective at all.

Junaid torn apart India but he hasn't done anything since with the new ball and its been a long time now.

In fact Misbah doesn't even give him the new ball anymore.

Junaid can't be compared with Boult and Southee yet because we are yet to see how good he is outside Asia. He's only played one test in SA and that isn't a large enough sample to determine how good of a test bowler he is overall.

good points, thats why I think Eng was a far better "home" venue for Pakistani Brand ,lush green outfields in UAE are a big concern as wickets are not supporting for pace bowlers.

As for Pakistan, Pakistan is so diverse in geography/climate etc that every type of pitch is possible with investment in different regions of the country, to give context we haven't even tested Quetta yet; might be similar to Joburg in conditions(altitude, thin air etc).

We have to see how boult bowls outside of seamer friendly wickets...

Junaid has not bowled consistently on seamer friendly wickets in test, it's hard to say how he will do... What concerns me about him is that bowling in UAE is making him bowl defensive lengths more so than I like. His in-swing is also some how gone...

The other thing is I don't see a growth in him, question is can we really create good fast bowlers in UAE? - Is he going to go the Gul route, terrible bowler

I am loosing confidence in UAE as a venue with every series, it is killing Pakistan cricket :-(

England bowled extremely well in this Test against India - they did well to bowl such a good Indian batting line up out twice.

England’s bowling attack is poor outside England. It is either Anderson or bust.

Across formats, considering full strength attacks, Australia lead the way followed by India, South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan/England.

South Africa just got walloped by SL 2-0.

When was the last time NZ had any notable performances overseas?

When fully fit

Best Test attack - Australia
Best LOI attack - Pakistan

Yes totally agreed as they both have attacks which are consistent on most conditions. If only Aussies had one good spinner to support Lyon in Sub continent

Yes South Africa lose by the same score in Sri Lanka as Pakistan in the UAE. Their attack of Rabada, Steyn, Philander, Ngidi and Maharaj is an excellent attack, although things aren’t looking very bright in Limited Overs, and the retirements of Steyn and Philander will hit them hard in Tests.

New Zealand’s pace attack is very good, and they have two good Limited Overs spinners in Sodhi and Santner. The only aspect where Pakistan have a clear advantage on New Zealand is spin bowling in Tests - they have no equal to Yasir.

Most of their overseas struggles have been down to their weak batting. They are nothing without Williamson and Taylor.

Overall, South Africa and New Zealand are ahead of Pakistan.

I disagree.

NZ toured England in May during their best leadership and fresh off a WC journey where they made the Final. Yet even with an in form Trent and Southee, they failed to restrict England to under 300 multiple times. Now compare that when we toured with only one bowler having played in England prior.

As far as SA, their attack is man for man better than us but they are too novice right now. Besides Rabada, Ngidi is a few Tests old while Mahraj has not even developed fully. In fact, his performances in SL besides that 9-fer’ were nothing to write about and was due to like Yasir in England, the inability of undertested pacers to take wickets.

The only attack that is better or on par with Pakistan currently is India and Australia. The latter rarely if ever fully fit to engage in a prolonged series.

Australia: starc, Pattinson, hazelwood... very good attack with lyon

But take any one of them out and it becomes ordinary

Aus then the next tier is Pakistan, India and SA who are more or less on the same level.

How on earth is the Australian attack the best in the world? Starc has been off colour for over a year, the same goes for Hazlewood. Lyon has been consistent but not remarkable. The only bowler they have on form is Cummins.

Even New Zealand look to have better bowling form. I mean they are currently being outbowled by India at home. What are posters basing this on exactly?

India bowled SA out under 200 in SA. 3 times out of 6 times when they toured. They consistently bowled out England too. They are doing the same in Australia. "outbowling" depends on how well the batting steps up for each team. Cummins world no.3 Hazlewood world no.11 Lyon 14 Starc 18. Bould 7 Southee 8 Wagner 15. More or less the same.

Exactly, I'm pretty baffled at people saying that SA and India are a tier below them.

Safrica has always been the best attack in the world...even in spinning conditions . It's just that their batsmen (including Amla and ABD) always flop and give the bowlers nothing to work with in places like India and Lanka.
When Oz sneaked off a win in India 2 winters ago, it was possible because Smith scored tons to support SOK and Lyon.

SA and its not even close

with Population of Pakistan and India , they should have best attacks comprehensively

With Tahir and Maharaj emerging as top class spinners, South Africa is finally a complete bowling unit. They're the best currently.

Australia's image has taken a hit after the India tour where Indian bowling line-up has outperformed them.

SA then India are the two best squads at the moment followed by Aus, pak, eng & nz. Verdict is still out though on how SA squad performs away, but a squad of Steyn, Rabada, Philander, Olivier & Maharaj definitely looks formidable.

Well said

The delusion is strong. A month after these posts, the world's best LOI attack averaged 202 per wicket in two games against India.

Aus then the next tier is Pakistan, India and SA who are more or less on the same level.

Stay in touch with reality. Indian bowlers comprehensively outperformed Pakistanis in their SA tours, even after ignoring the absence of ABD.

Full credit to Rohit and Dhawan for taming the Pakistan attack.

LOI includes T20s btw where Pakistan have been sensational. They showed signs of getting back on the right track in ODIs too recently vs NZ.

SAF in tests. They have fantastic depth. Pak batsman are bad but Olivier has been impressive.

I agree.

Best Test attack currently - Australia
Best LOI attack - Pakistan
Best t-20 attack - Pakistan

South Africa is a close second followed by India.

SA has the best pace bowling attack in the world but they don't have the best bowling attack overall because in Asia, the same bowlers get flattered.

Steyn is well past, Philander can keep things tight but is not threatening at all in Asia and Rabada though I feel is great everywhere(just too ruthless at home).

England’s bowling attack is poor outside England. It is either Anderson or bust.

I actually agree with this, although Australia still havent prove themselves enough away from home.

SA are brilliant in SA and great everywhere outside Asia but in Asia, they aint the same. Steyn is past, Philander isn't threatening, and Rabada is the sole man in the bowling.

I do feel when we take overall bowling attack and not just pace attack, India actually has a very strong case. Absolutely ruthless at home or in Asia with Ashwin, Jadeja and Shami and very good away as well with Bumrah, Ishant, Shami and Ash/Jaddu.

Are people being serious or just trolls calling Australia best test bowling attack while we are the best ODi and T20 bowling attacks? I mean Pakistan being best T20 attack still makes sense but other two just sounds stupid!

I agree.

Best Test attack currently - Australia
Best LOI attack - Pakistan
Best t-20 attack - Pakistan

South Africa is a close second followed by India.

Best Test Attack - Australia - India 622/7d today
Best LOI attack - Pakistan - Indian batsmen average 202 in Asia Cup 3 months ago

Every Indian batsman must be an ATG.

What a beast Waqar was during the first half of his career!! IMO Our pace attack will have to perform consistently for a few more years then only we can compare them with the WWI as a bowling unit. As individuals they have miles to go and only Bumrah and perhaps Shami has the potential to match or even exceed them but still too early to tell.

india is head and shoulders above every bowling attack.

australia is supposedly the next best, but they have been outbowled bu safrica both home and away, outbowled by india home and away.

south africa might be second best,. nortje looks class. rabada bolwed better in india lst year for his 2nd tour, he was unlucky not to get morre wickets. they also have newer untried bowlers

eng bowling will also rise, and be 2nd or 3rd best. sam curran, archer, and other untried bowlers like olly stone along with dom bess will make eng a quality bowling line up

Curran is a trundler and will be useless in Asia. Archer can bowl it fast on occasion but usually doesn't full that fast on average and he tends to leak lots of runs at times.

Pakistan's.bowling attack could be strong in some time, with the likes of Shaheen, Naseem, Abbas, Rauf, etc.

Heartwarming to see Umesh averaging 17 since the debut of Bumrah that too mostly playing in India.

Indian bowlers ke itne achhe stats dekh ke mere aankhon me khusi ke aansu aa gaye:dw:dw long may this continue

Lol, the peak waqar before his major injuries was the most devastating fast bowler I ever saw, just sheer destruction at blinding pace

For me the Australia attack is the best as a unit which includes depth, the Indian attack is strong but it's a ageing attack, pakistan have Hugh potential with a battery of fast bowlers coming through the ranks, south Africa are pretty strong but philander is about to retire, England are at a cross road, Anderson and broad not long left but the pretenders are always injured

you're right, archer, their best bowler ,leaks many runs. still don't know about olly stone. curran is improving, and also he is an all rounder, not a specialist bowler

eng probably has the best spin attack after india. jack leach and now dom bess are proving to be good bowlers and are handy in asia.

naseem and shaheen are young and will take time to develop, but no doubt they will rise through the ranks and have the potential to be the equivalent of wasim and waqar. add sameen gul and this is a serious trio. but they are still teenagers, as i said they need time.

Lol @ leach and Dom bes are better than nathan Lyons, england best spinner is moin ali by a distance

bowling is about partnerships, especially for spinners. eng have a lot of depth in their bowling and many back up spinners like moeen, leach, bess , parkinson. aus only have lyon and no one else. that is what i mean by spin attack.

when aus tour subcontinent lyon has no other decent spin partner. also lyon is aging to towards his mid 30s. eng sweeped sri lanka 3-0 in 2018 cuz of leach, moeen and rashid, they outbowled sri lanka's spinners.

that is why eng's spin attack and depth of spinners can be potentially the best after india's.

past 4 years since 2016? india.
best bowling unit by far. better than overrated australia. only advantage is that India's attack is ageing. However, saini, prasidh krishna are waiting to get picked.

shami is good for another 3 years. bumrah has atleast 8. ishant another 3.

pakistan in my opinion have the 3rd best attack for now. They gave potential to be the best as India's attack is ageing. australua isn't a spring chicken either. starc is 29. patto 29. Another 4 years? maybe 5 and that's if they don't get injured.

Lol, this guy lives in his own world.

It's Australia, brother. They've got 4 world class pacers and a world class spinner.

Only in Australia lol Check the last 1 year 2 year 3 year 4 year 5 year bowling average. Either it was INdia or SA. NZ, Pakistan, SL the notorious bunnies of Australia in Australia cannot give an accurate picture I don't deny Cummins is class. My favorite bowler. But with old ball and other brands of cricket balls they are found wanting.

yea maybe in australia only. even there India outperformed them. india are the best o re the past 4 years in bowling.

4 years is long enough. India's bowling is superior to australia in all departments. Australia's advantage at home is actually Lyon and smith. They have the best batsman in the world. if aussie bowlers had to bowl yo smith they would average close to 50.

overall it's india. best bowling attack for the past 4 years.

India has 3 spinners. Not just one. Kuldeep, Ashwin, Jadeja.

Pace even stevens. But India definitely has superior skills with the older ball.

Cummins - Bumrah
Hazlewood - Shami
Starc - Umesh
Pattinson - Ishant

If Bhuvi regains his full fitness he will be another back up bowler. Probably AUstralia will have Jhye Richardson.

Need to revise the list for 2019-2020 because England have improved (Archer factor) and South Africa and New Zealand have declined.

1. India
2. Australia
3. England
4. South Africa
5. New Zealand

The poor teams/minnows all have mediocre attacks and do not deserve to be rated.

India vs Australia is tight, but I chose India as number 1 because of the following reasons:

1. Ashwin and Jadeja are better than Lyon.

2. Shami is more effective than Starc against top-order batsmen.

3. Bumrah and Cummins are equally good.

The one aspect that you can say in Australia’s favor is the impact of Kohli’s captaincy.

While Indian bowlers are led by the greatest Asian Test captain of all time, Australian bowlers are led by a mediocrity who fluked the captaincy.

I really enjoyed the SA India series in SA. Bumrah is high class, Shami can bowl some good balls but is not the same level. Umesh is improving. But, apart from Bumrah, none of them are as good as Cummins, Hazlewood, even Pattinson. But could be wrong - let’s see what happens on India’s next tour to Aus.

Also, is anyone watching Anrich Nortje in this series against England? Wow, great start by him.

shami is better than hazelwood who is a fodder outside australia. Especially outside SENA.
Pattinson wasn't anything special in sub continent either.

don't look at names. last 4 year's india bowlers have the best averages home and away.

yes nortje is talented. Better than hazelwood, Pattinson, starc already. nortje rabada and ngidi is going to be a great attack in the future.

England with archer, stone and broad is great for SENA too.

I mean, Shami’s career averages in SENA are much worse (40+ in England) than Hazlewood’s career averages outside of SENA. If you disregard the SA series with the crazy pitches where SA wanted to take ‘badla’ for rank turners in India, and Aus series without their two best batsmen, then seems as if there is still something to prove for all bar Bumrah in SENA..

It is the consistency and control that Bumrah, Hazlewood, Cummins, Pattinson all have. For me this is what makes great bowlers. I haven’t seen Shami bowl since the SA game unfortunately, so maybe he has gotten more consistent with his control, but will wait and see next time they tour Australia, I guess. What Shami can do better than all of these bowlers is reverse swing. So he can be really deadly in Asian conditions, which is a big deal.

This is, without a doubt, the best fast bowling attack India has ever had. But personally, I think Australia’s pacers are better overall. SA’s are pretty good as well, but have had some patchy series recently, which have pulled them down in my judgement - against SL in SA and now against England. Not sure what is going on with them. I enjoyed Nortje bowling though. Phew, serious pace and good control. Rabada is also world class. Inshallah they will all find their best form again as a group.

no Australian bowlers don't bowl well in shield cricket to warner and smith either. So you probably have to compare their records vs the rest of the world.

Aussies have the advantage in SENA conditions because they are familiar worth it. Vice versa for india with Asian conditions.

I would say shami has been superior to hazelwood and patto overall.

last 4 years, ishant has been averaging better than hazelwood too. just facts. he went from a 40 average to 30 now.

Yes, they have definitely improved recently. No doubt about it. I made fun of Ishant for his whole career, but finally he is bowling very well - back of a length outswingers at pace, also able to push the ball fuller at pace, very nice. Actually, it is a strange thing I noticed with a couple of the best Indian fast bowlers from the past - Zak; Srinath; Sharma all improved at the last stage of their careers, even though Srinath and Zak’s pace went down. Nice to see Bumrah right up there from the beginning of his career.

I think the next Aus tour will be a great series to watch and I think the Indian bowlers will do well. If that happens, of course, I will not hesitate to congratulate them. Just going purely on what I have seen so far.
