The NFL Thread

Hey Gotham

I am visiting the US in November. I will be flying into Philadelphia from Orlando on Sunday 22 November arriving around 10.30 in the morning. I plan go direct to the Eagles - Bucs game which I believe is at 1pm.

Just needed some advice really, I will likely hire a car and park near the stadium, post game I need to drive up to Laurenville township which is around 45 miles away.

Any tips on where to park, and any other general advice.

Would appreciate any info.

Regards
Kam

So Brady destroyed his cell phone the day before he was due to meet with investigators :)) Cheaters gonna cheat I guess.

All this race talk about Chip is so stupid and making the wait until the beginning of the season even longer.

GC,

I am very excited to see how Jerome Couplin will develop, his wing span is equal to JPP and he is only 6-2..... Also the Kam Chancellor rumors and Eagles are intriguing...

I'm sorry Romali, you have to suffer the pain of seeing Bradford as your QB now.

typical, second half sees the Falcons fail to defend checkdown after checkdown after checkdown and Chip Kelly is a genius again :))

All good brother, I hope he comes good as the season progresses. He has a bit of rust which is natural considering he hasn't played in like 2 years.. Nick Foles will be solid and even better with a decent WR...

Yeah, with our D-line all Foles needs to be is solid and we will be alright. Aaron Donald in particular looks better each time I see him, he's an utter beast.

What do you think of Brockers ? Top 5 DTs in the league now ?

Dunno, I don't watch as much football as I used to so I'm not up to speed on all the teams round the league. Not sure I could call him top 5 when he's not even the best DT on his team.

Hmmm I see... COming out of LSU I wanted Brockers over COX but boy am I glad we took COX instead now.. Oh and our season is OVER, hopefully we get a top 5 pick

It's a weird one with Brockers, because he's on a stacked D-line. He's definitely a good player even though he is overshadowed by the likes of Donald and Quinn. I mean, Nick Fairley would start for pretty much every team in the league and he's a backup DT in St. Louis.

lol Wish we had Nick Foles right now....

Sorry again for Bradford :(

Foles looked OK against the Steelers until the panicky game ending interception. Had a couple of dropped passes, one of which would have been an easy 40-50 yard TD to a wide open Kendricks but it was mostly the terrible gameplan and playcalling that cost us the win over the Steelers. At least he isn't afraid to throw the ball 10 yards downfield which is a huge change from the Bradford days.

Bradford is very rusty currently which is normal since he hasnt played in 2 years but he better start showing up otherwise Eagles are looking at another top 10 PICK in 2016 :D

GC,

Jordan Hicks looks like the real deal, looks like we struck gold in the 3rd round 2015 draft...........

It's not rust, this is the same Bradford that we've seen from day one of his NFL career. Only good for short passes and checkdowns, can't or won't throw the ball further downfield and if a receiver does get open behind the defence Bradford will just miss the wide open guy.

If he wasn't a #1 overall pick making stupid money on the old rookie wage scale then he would have been forgotten a long time ago, he's garbage. People who didn't watch him play trotted out the usual "No weapons in St Louis", "Chip's a genius, his system will make anyone look good" and that kind of thing, but it all falls apart when you realise that Shaun Hill looked better than Bradford did with the same weapons and coaching in St. Louis.

Only one man can save the Eagles season now:

Bradford had a lot of deep throws today BM he looked very good check out the highlights HOWEVER YOU GUYS ROBBED US ON THIS DEAL WITH FOLES AND A SECOND ROUNDER :(........... Hate you...................

Yeah, I watched some of the game (Thanks to Gamepass I can watch whichever games I want and I've been keeping half an eye on Bradford) and he did connect on a few nice throws downfield. He also missed some wide open guys downfield which happened a lot in St. Louis, maybe it's a timing issue which will be cleared up but I'd be more inclined to believe he's just not that accurate more than 15-20 yards downfield.

I agree about the Rams getting the better end of the deal, we got a starting QB and a second rounder which is just insane. Chip Kelly has got to be in huge trouble if the Eagles don't turn things around quickly, the roster moves he made don't make a great deal of sense.

Bloody hell, Lions and Bears both trying to throw this game.

St. Louis will be looking for a replacement for Nick Foles soon enough.

Besides cutting Evan Mathis, which of the moves don't make sense?

Let Maclin and Mathis go and traded McCoy to make room under the salary cap only to go and use that space to get Bradford, who is garbage and Murray who doesn't fit his system and looks like half the player Ryan Matthews is. Meanwhile the aforementioned crappy QB is throwing to receivers who keep dropping the ball because all the decent receivers have left and the line can hardly run block.

Don't worry though, I'm sure Chip's still a revolutionary genius.

Yes, Chip put a gun to Maclin's head and forced him to leave the Eagles' offer and go back to his home state with his friends and family and to go play with his old coach.

He signed a 5 year, $55,000,000 contract with the Chiefs which along with the factors above are the reasons he is no longer an Eagle. I love Mac but he is not worth that much.

Letting Mathis go was a mistake. Yes, he was being a pain and held out of voluntary minicamps hoping to get a new contract, but you have to work something out in that scenario.

McCoy has done nothing in Buffalo and if you watch the Eagles last year, you would knew he wasn't the same running back as in years past.

They were able to use McCoy's cap space to sign Murray, Byron Maxwell (who after a rough start has really solidified the secondary), Mathews, in addition to obtaining Kiko Alonso. I'd take all that over McCoy.

Bradford has been disappointing, but so was Foles. Chip knew he was never going to win a Superbowl with him, so he took a dart with Bradford. I don't blame him for that. I'd rather try to improve than be content with average QB play.

The biggest mistake that Chip has made is not focusing on the O-Line depth via free agency or the draft. Not drafting a single offensive lineman these past two years is ridiculous.

But to go along with the media storyline of Chips's moves being the cause of the Eagles' struggle this year is lazy and wrong.

Except Bradford has never shown he can rise to the level of average QB play, so you've downgraded at QB while paying millions more than before.

Genius.

Genius.

One year deal. Took a dart at a former 1st overall pick.

When you know Foles is not the answer, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Took a flyer rather than be content with Foles.

It's not called taking a flyer/dart/chance when your replacement for Foles is someone who has proven that he's much worse.

It's not called taking a flyer/dart/chance when your replacement for Foles is someone who has proven that he's much worse.

Bradford had shown in potential in college, leading to becoming the 1st overall pick and subsequently, rookie of the year in 2010.

He career fell off after that for 4 seasons for various reasons, including yes, his own faults.

Chip realized that he'll never be able to win big with Foles.

So instead of just riding out another year with him and pretending that he's his guy, he decided to trade him for Bradford, hoping that he could capture the potential that he showed in college and his rookie year.

It's not like there were Bradys and Rodgers type QBs floating about in the off season.

So far, it looks like, it won't work out. You move on from Bradford and try the next QB. Not sure what doesn't make sense about that.

He was mediocre at best in his rookie year too and didn't really show much potential. He would have been benched a long time ago if it wasn't for the fact that he was part of the last draft class with the old rookie wage scale, as such he was being paid so much that the team couldn't bench him even though he sucked.

During his time in St Louis Sam Bradford proved that he is worse than Austin Davis (third string for the Browns) and journeyman backup Shaun Hill.

Keep telling yourself he showed enough potential that warranted paying millions more than the Eagles would have paid Foles to get better quality QB play.

Bradford is garbage, everybody that's watched him play knows he is garbage, if you think it makes sense to pay more for garbage than you did for an average QB then I'm not sure what it will take to make you see sense.

Then Bradford isn't the answer. Neither is Foles.

I'm ok with the guy at least trying. I'd have less confidence in him if he knew Foles wasn't the answer and stayed content.

What's the verdict on Chip's revolutionary genius now?

Cheers for the second round pick.

I'm shocked, not so much as the firing, but the timing. Very unlike Jeffrey Laurie.

This next season is going to blow. Dark times ahead.

Completely thug-like behaviour by the Cincinnati Bengals – I mean why would you do that?

Total failure by the coaches to instill a positive team culture.

Bungles gonna Bungle but the refs shafted them too. The hit on Bernard by Shazier was a clear example of spearing and not only was it not flagged but it meant that an automatic first down ended up being a fumble recovered by the Steelers. The lack of a flag made all the more egregious by the fact that the refs threw a flag against the Bengals for what was a pretty clean hit just 10-15 mins earlier.

Then Joey Porter came onto the field when he wasn't allowed to be there, instigated trouble and instead of offsetting penalties the refs only flagged Jones which turned a difficult 50 yard FG into an easy 35 yarder.

All of that is being ignored with the accusations of bad behaviour from the Bengals when the Steelers were equally guilty, if not more so.

Let's not forget Mike Munchak grabbing and pulling Reggie Nelson's hair on the sidelines, the Steelers sideline and coaches have a long history of breaking the rules and being dirty as hell themselves and it is that way from the top down.

Anybody remember this?

Seahawks have to be the luckiest team in NFL history. Game after game, things just always seem to fall in their favor.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/01/12/pro-2015-dwight-stevenson-award/

In most sports, the Most Valuable Player is inherently also the best player. In football, though, nearly all of the Most Valuable Players honorees are quarterbacks—such is the state of the modern game. The MVP award has become something that only quarterbacks—and the occasional running back, if that season’s QBs play poorly enough—can win. The best players, though, can play any position, and deserve a level playing field come award time.

Instead of handing an award to a quarterback or running back when other players at less glamorous positions enjoyed superior seasons, we at PFF also recognize the best overall performance of the NFL season each year, regardless of position, and bestow the Dwight Stephenson Award to that player.

The award is named after a player who pre-dates Pro Football Focus, but does not pre-date the site’s ethos. Dwight Stephenson played only eight NFL seasons for the Miami Dolphins, but was a five-time All-Pro and was selected to the All-Decade team of the 1980s. More importantly, you only need to throw on a couple of minutes of tape to see that he was something special.

This award comes with no positional bias whatsoever. A guard has every bit as much chance to win it as a cornerback, pass-rusher, quarterback, or any other player. All they need to do is dominate and perform during the regular season.

For the past three seasons of existence, the award has been won by J.J. Watt on each occasion.

Winner
Aaron Donald, DT, St. Louis Rams

As a rookie, Aaron Donald was PFF’s highest-graded defensive tackle. In his second season, he didn’t just take a step forward, he broad-jumped into the area previously reserved only for Watt, a player universally acknowledged now as generationally great and one of the best to ever put on pads. Donald out-graded Watt this season, and by the end of the year, it wasn’t even particularly close.

Donald maxed out the new PFF grading scale with a 99.9, while Watt earned a 95.6. In the old system, there was more than 20 grading points between the two players over 16 games.

Donald ended the season with 79 total pressures, a batted pass, 51 defensive stops, and 30 plays in which he beat his blocker, but the ball was out before the play could result in pressure. Donald was the single-most disruptive force in the NFL during the 2015 season.

Watt may have edged Donald in several statistical categories (89 total pressures, 59 defensive stops), but the Texan has become far more of an edge defender than an interior player this season. Watt played outside the tackle on 63.9 percent of his passes, and was only really an interior player on base downs. Why is that important? Statistically speaking, edge defenders generate more pressure than interior players. Not because they are inherently better, but because they have more space to work with and a lower chance of multiple bodies to negotiate. Of the top five players in total pressures this season, only one is an interior rusher, and 16 of the top 20 in that category are edge players. Donald also saw 92 fewer pass-rushing snaps than Watt over the course of the season, meaning he simply saw fewer opportunities to post these ridiculous numbers. Donald’s season with 92 additional pass-rushing snaps projects to 14.6 additional hurries, or enough to put him 3.6 clear of Watt.

None of this is meant to diminish Watt, who remains a dominant player, but the fact is that between performance and injury, he didn’t have the same type of year he has had in the past, despite the sack total suggesting otherwise. Donald, however, didn’t just take advantage of Watt playing at 80 percent of his previous best, but posted a grade over the season that rivals any year we have ever seen from Watt.

It seems incredible to suggest that any defensive player had a better year than Watt so soon after trying to convince everybody that he was one of the greatest defensive players to ever play the game, but Donald’s season was just that good.

Eh, not the biggest fan of DJack. Would prefer a bigger wide receiver so we can finally have a redzone option. Anybody over Cooper, however.

There is that Wideout from Cincy who is a free agent, however if Howie somehow signs Alshon Jeffrey and that guard from Baltimore, all will be forgiven :D

Keep going Atlanta, make sure Nazis all over the globe cry themselves to sleep tonight.

I knew there was a reason I never cheered for the Falcons. This is an all time choke job.

He supports a fascist white supremacist and hasn't won anything that wasn't tainted by cheating but sure, praise him if you want.

All the people who value equality, freedom, honesty and respect for our fellow man (and woman) know the truth though.

To all those cricket fans who understand American Footabl ... How does this Win (or the loss) compare with anything in Cricket ? Just curious.

It's like you are chasing 400 and you are 50/6 and still manage to win.

I was quite mad last night. Falcons were the less experienced team and unfortunately that showed in the final session. Pats got quite lucky with the OT coin toss though.
