Hurts among Eagles players to skip White House visit

Jalen Hurts and several Philadelphia Eagles team-mates players skipped a reception with US President Donald Trump at the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl victory.

Star quarterback Hurts, 26, and other players had "scheduling conflicts", a White House official said.

The invitation was optional for players to attend, and less than half the team showed up on Monday.

Philadelphia beat the the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in New Orleans in February.

Despite Hurts' absence, Trump praised the Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player as a "terrific guy and terrific player".

"[The] Eagles have turned out to be an incredible team, an incredible group," he added.

American broadcaster NBC reported other players who did not attend included AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis and Brandon Graham.

In 2018, following their first Super Bowl victory, Philadelphia's White House visit was cancelled after most players decided to stay away.

A the time, there was still ongoing debate surrounding the kneeling protests which began in 2016, although the team never confirmed this was the reason for their absence.

Trump, serving his first term as president at the time. was highly critical, external of players who took the knee during the national anthem, so he instead invited a group of Eagles fans to attend.

Sports teams visiting the White House after winning a championship is a tradition that dates back to the 19th Century, but in the past decades some have used it to make a statement.

Golden State Warriors were disinvited by Trump following their NBA championship triumph in 2017, after two-time MVP Stephen Curry said he did not want to go.

The Warriors were not invited when they won their third title in four seasons a year later.

Pittsburgh Steelers release Ryan Watts after he suffered life-threatening injury
The Pittsburgh Steelers have released second-year cornerback Ryan Watts due to ongoing health concerns, the team announced on Monday.

Watts, 23, will be medically retired after suffering a neck injury during the 2024 NFL preseason.

In a statement, Steelers general manager Omar Khan confirmed the decision was made in consultation with medical professionals and Watts' representatives.

"Unfortunately, today we are releasing Ryan Watts from our roster," Khan said. "After consulting with our medical team, medical experts, and Ryan's representatives, we all agree that it is in Ryan's best interest to discontinue playing football at this time. We will continue to assist and support Ryan as he transitions to the next phase of his life."


Watts sustained his injury during Pittsburgh's final preseason game against the Detroit Lions, ending his rookie campaign before it began.

In January, Watts shared a social media update on his recovery, posting a photo from his hospital bed wearing a neck brace and vowing to "remain optimistic."

Before entering the NFL, Watts played two seasons at Ohio State before transferring to the University of Texas, where he recorded 89 total tackles, including 63 solo stops, across 24 games.

The Steelers selected Watts in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. His early retirement marks a difficult conclusion to a promising career that had only just begun.

NFL fine Falcons and coach £262,000 for prank call

The Atlanta Falcons have been fined $250,000 (£187,000) by the NFL after Jax Ulbrich - the son of their defensive co-ordinator Jeff Ulbrich - prank called quarterback Shedeur Sanders during the NFL Draft.

Jeff Ulbrich has also personally been fined $100,000 (£75,000) for the incident, which the Falcons had said involved 21-year-old Jax Ulbrich getting Sanders' number from an iPad when visiting his parents' home and writing it down to "later conduct a prank call".

In video footage on social media, Sanders can be heard taking a call from someone purporting to be the New Orleans Saints' general manager Mickey Loomis.

The caller tells Sanders the Saints will make him their next pick before saying that he is going to "have to wait a little bit longer".

Sanders - whose father Deion began his storied NFL career with the Falcons - ended up being selected by the Cleveland Browns as the sixth pick of the fifth round, and 144th overall.

US president Donald Trump has announced that the 2027 NFL Draft will take place in Washington DC.

The three-day event will be held at the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue.

It will be the first time Washington hosts the Draft since the NFL started rotating the sites from New York in 2015.

Eagles to host Cowboys in 2025 NFL season opener

The Philadelphia Eagles will host NFC East rivals the Dallas Cowboys in the 2025 NFL season opener on Thursday 4 September, the league has announced.

It will mark the first time the two teams have faced off in the opening game of a campaign since 2000.

The Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 at Super Bowl 59 in February and will begin the defence of their title against their biggest rivals.

Since 2004, some 20 defending Super Bowl champions have played in the season opener and have gone 15-5 in those games, including the Chiefs' 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens in 2024.

The Cowboys, under the leadership of new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, will be looking to avoid becoming victims of that trend.

Several more matches are set to be confirmed over the coming days, with the full schedule being released on Wednesday at 20:00 ET (Thursday 01:00 BST).
