The Ranji Trophy Thread

Having watched Sachin's early clips, there wasn't much elegance.

Sachin was never an "elegant" batsman. Sachin was once in century talent and was near complete batsman at 16. Shaw like many young Indian batsmen will have to learn facing real pace bowling. If he passes that test then he graduates to next level.

Lucky break for Prithvi :D...the kid deserves it though. Classy cover drives..

Would be great if he develops well for our national team

There it is. The child prodigy scores a 100 on debut. well played Prithvi. Will open the batting for India at WC2019. I'm calling it now!:misbah

for a moment i thought his hero was Rohit Sharma.

Mumbai produces classy batsmen - has been the case historically. Prithvi joins Sachin on the list of batsmen making a century for Mumbai on debut.

If he becomes half a player Sachin was, he will have a great career for Mumbai and hopefully for India.

wow found out today that Dhoni made his last Ranji trophy appearance in 2004. Yes no typo. 2004!

half player means sub 30 Test average ;-)

yeah.

second youngest after sachin. impressive. solid technique and plays attackingly. but watching this match, has a tendency to cut deliveries too close to the body.

He is just 17 and not a finished product by any means. Has a 500 in an age group tournament..that is phenomenal! Deserves more chances for sure..

absolutely. i was joking about the WC part, will take him 3-4 years at this level AT LEAST. Not sure if he'll be up for IPL auction- i bet there will be a few suitors ready to take him even now.

That's why like of Vinay Steyn and Karn Warne get Selected sometime.

Every Indian boy has held a cricket bat at least once in his life time, but only less than 1% will ever play hard ball cricket. You get lot of mediocre players playing FC cricket because they can afford to be there. Lot of them look like mediocre players who have been just working hard enough to sustain a position. Seems like the like of Rehane, Rahul, Nair and other batsmen that represented India came through the ranking playing these bowlers as substitutes for bowling machine.

If you see physique of our domestic phaast bowlers you will wonder if they have ever heard of term protein. In India only people who serious pursue sports are either new middle class kids who are supported by their parents or people from sport families.

New Indian middle class is much better than what middle class was a decade or two ago. The more kids play cricket, the sooner they realize that cricket is not an advanced sport and cricketers have been over hyped.

Cricket is what Hockey was 50 years ago i.e a very specific skill based and not so demanding on body in which Indian could complete internationally. Hockey chanced and we were left behind.

My prediction is that inside 50 years cricket will cease to be primary sport in India. I really wish we invest in Olympic sports.

Olympics in itself is little more than a you know what waving contest for developed countries.

Pankaj Singh was the only indian domestic bowler that impressed me. He hits the deck hard. He'd do well away. He's been performing consistently well in Ranji trophy. He was the second best pacer in this ranji trophy.

Who was the best?:nehra

Who was the best?:nehra

Some 22 year old guy and I never watched him bowl. He looked malnourished in the picture. The first place is always occupied by a new pacer every year and they aren't good the following year to be at the top 5. Pankaj is in the top 3 every year. Every pacer is a trundler to be honest. There is one bowler in every team that touches 130, everyone else bowls at 120s. Every trundler that has ever played for India is the spearhead for his state side. Vinay Kumar is the captain LOL. When a trundler finally hits 130km/h with a grunting short ball, most batsmen either duck, leave or miss time the shot and get caught. Only the likes of Naman Ojha, Samson, Pant and other recognizable batsman can play short balls. The other batsmen are not talented enough for international cricket, they are just patient. Ranji trophy bowlers are basically human bowling machine locked at 130km/h speed. Batsmen are pretty stupid, they attack anything that is wide even if the ball is swinging. I'm starting to think that these guys don't practice enough. Do most of them have career outside cricket ?

Lmao I hardly watch Ranji. I always used to think how do people manage to see this lol..

Which team does the 22 year old bowler play for btw? Pacer or spinner?

It is late night when they show it here. It is a pacer. Im talking just about pacers. Spinners are always at the top.

Here are some of the useful stats.

You're probably talking about K Vignesh. But I always thought he was a Bhuvi type trundler..Or might be Mohd. Siraj..

Bumrah to sit out of the final WTH man,for some nonsense A game he has to miss this chance where they could had won the Ranji for first time, extremely dubious this decision imo.

First of all he is not sitting out for A game. He is playing ODI match on 15.

Rahane is sitting out too. And he is not even a guaranteed starter like Bumrah.

Mate but Mumbai is strong without Rahane,Gujarat is dependent on Bumrah also if for our top domestic tournament he missed 1 ODI it wouldn't be a big deal, sorry but if these Ranji teams were franchises surely this would had been allowed or schedule would had been altered only for final.

Anyhow looks like Mumbai will get another.

I agree that he should have been allowed to skip a ODI but we have only these 3 matches before Champions Trophy. And we are not Australia to win without our best LO pacer.

Fair enough, although what's the point of IPL if it doesn't prepare our youngsters, its always better if these trophies are before IPL than after.

A stable Team combination is everything in a condensed tournament like Champions Trophy. We will hit the ground running in England.

Ranji trophy final has been going for the past 3 days and yet there is no discussion on this forum . This is why I don't take Indian fans' comments seriously. Apart from few rest seems to just spew words just because they feel they need to defend India. Anyway, good FC beginning so far for Prithivi Shah, loser Parthiv Patel just taunted Shah after dismissing him .

Don't judge us so harsh brother. We resting up for mega season. Mumbai wins always anyways.

Tourney got over as soon as we got eliminated in the semis.:afaq

Mumbai in final can't make for a duller Ranji final bro, i would follow it atleast if Karnataka did.

Supporting Gujarat But Mumbai usually nails the final however bad first 2 days are

Tbf short, malnourished bowlers bowling at 120kph to domestic bullies is not exactly great television.

Seems like only Mumbai and Karnataka has more than 3 batsmen that look good. Every other team has 2-3 good batsmen and rest look poor even if their stats says otherwise.

You have been watching too much test cricket. Your standards are impossibly high now. :srt

2 fast bowlers bowling at 115Km/h while the experienced Abishek Nayar was grunting and at 120 KM/H LOL.

That is one reason why I dont watch domestic cricket (mostly)...you hardly see anyone bowling over 130s. It was hilarious to see our test prospect Thakur being tagged as "Right arm Fast" by the telecasters and he struggling to hit 135ks!

Facepalmish stuff..some young batting talents are the only saving grace, but you cannot be sure about their talent and achievements given the "Pace bowlers" they are subjected to..

Not a fan of Test cricket at all but I love watching domestic cricket as I can enjoy others' dream and hope fall apart right in front of my eyes. It makes me feel a bit better about my self. :sarf

You are just jealous that you can't bowl 105km/h thunderbolts like Kalaria!

I can't even hit 70 km/h bowling spin while chucking. There is no way I can touch 100 KM/H Thirimanne's thunderbolts any time soon and maybe never.

Cricket is a bubble, in order to get suck into that bubble you need be a bit stronger for your age, courage, have a good coach and a bit of brain. Most children go without never getting the opportunity to even realize whether they are good or not.

Very valid reason to watch domestics that.

I teach youngsters some General Aptitude to feel good about myself. :kapil

If Parthiv can carry Gujarat through here, I think he will cement Indian Test Team for some while (unless Pant makes incredible start in LOIs)

Lets see if Gujarat has it in them to finish it up! 56 overs 130 to win 7 wickets,2 set batsmen.

Gujarat has a chance here. Mumbai always had better talent not just better facilities which jealous people always crib about. You don't win that number of trophies if you don't have better talent.

Mumbai has been really lucky to have a great system. What that does, if Mumbai does not even have great talent, the system allows decent players to become mentally strong players at the domestic level. In the last 2 decades, Mumbai hasnt produced too many players who have featured in the Indian team. Still, they have won over 50% of the Ranji titles. In some of their title wins, Mumbai have been poor in the first half of the campaign and then have just made it to the knockouts. And usually, they go on to win the titles. Its all down to the Mumbai players being mentally stronger than others.

even now, if Parthiv departs, I will back Mumbai to win it.

Ishan kishan and rishab pant seem to have gelled well into the ranji trophy setup

Parthiv is a far better batsman than dhoni, saha, ojha in test cricket.he can play as a batsmen alone in india.only if he can keep as well as he bats he will secure his spot for atleast 2 yrs untill pant can be drafted

Why aren't Mumbai taking the new ball? Do they think their part timers are going to get the 6 wickets?

He can be used as a WK in overseas matches, in non spinning conditions. Saha is by far the better keeper so we need him on spin pitches, where keeping is more difficult.

His keeping particularly to spin is atrocious
He doesnt collect even a single ball cleanly and most of the times he drops catches in crucial situations of main players who can hurt u badly .in india our spinners can create more chances but in overseas the next chance can come after a lomg time which demoralizes our already weak bowling further

Yeah, but I expect he wont have to keep much to spinners in England, SA and Aus. We might play just 1 spinner. Also, our batting would be slightly weaker, so having Parthiv at 6/7 would make the team stronger than having Saha at 6/7.

from what others have observed, appears to be pretty average. Hopefully he improves.
yeah- just a teenager so you never know.
maybe parthiv had 2 bad games against ENG but his keeping was too poor for someone who has been doing it for 11 years.

Parthivs keeping was atrocious from the begining.he hasnt improved one bit.he lost us the sydney test with his drops, missed stumpings and in 2004 loss also his keeping played a part

Yeah, Parthiv is genuinely an average keeper to spinners. He can keep against pacers though.

Didnt he miss a stumping of Gilly in the final session. and then also dropped a catch of one of the batsmen an hour before close of play.

Just to add, its easy to make out that PArthiv is a poor keeper against spinners. He gets up too early and doesnt seem to move well with the ball (as in while following the ball). Things like these are not due to a bad game, but poor technique.

Yes.i am more cofident of his batting than a player like rohit, rahane in india particularly.his technique against spin is very good and he uses his feet, gets deep and cuts well also

if that's the case, it's quite sad because i don't see him getting ahead of one of our gun batsman, and i believe india will only replace saha with someone with sound glove-work( rightly so).
i also won't be surprised if we start playing two spinners when we tour. It's follows the 'play your best XI' logic.

Because sahas batting is not upto the mark and kohli likes to have options parthiv will be prefered definitely for overseas tours

I don't agree about mentally strong.Though you make some good points about poorer Mumbai teams winning title. Its all relative in the end. Also having great system is not the same as having great facilities.

i see pant has been keeping for delhi in FC. what's his glovework like- anyone know?

Pant is average keeper but not atrocious.People are looking too much into his u19 world cup keeping.Dhoni was also 'just' keeper when he broke into international.
About batting he is going to be more dangerous than sehwag and Warner combined.
