The Ranji Trophy Thread

?

Take a look at his SR and Average. Number of wickets per match is a factor of the bowling attack he's a part of.
68 wickets in 25 matches with low average means he is a very condition specific bowler.. Not saying he is bad, but not a replacement for Ashwin

Nah. He turns the ball and extracts bounce. The same as most offies including Ashwin. Also, no such thing as conditions specific bowler within India. They play everywhere.

Mumbai back to its place as primus inter pares in Indian cricket?

Wins Ranji Trophy despite having one of the smallest population base. Highest number of representation in Team India with Rohit, Jaiswal, Sarfaraz. Maybe Musheer and one or two of the spinners soon. And there's Lord Shardul.

I'm a fervent Mumbai supporter and will dedicate a toast to them tomorrow but you've got to give it to Vidarbha for the fight they put in for the fourth innings. I believe it was the one of highest fourth innings chases - successful/unsuccessful in the history of the tournament. The first class system is bursting with talent and attitude.

Don't know if Mumbai can replicate. They never get to keep their talent. Players will disappear to the National team, India A, U19 tours. Mumbai always ends up trying to compete with a mix of veterans and fresh youngsters.

Coming to the potential selections, the top 2 are clear - Mulani & Musheer. I already outlined why.

Mumbai should lend some batters (other than Rahane) to other FC teams. Maybe, some of them can return back to their ancestral homes!

To be honest if Rahane can hang on for a while, it will really help Mumbai. Veterans who've played for India or haven't quite succeeded at an India level have played a huge role in Mumbai's success - Jaffer, Muzumdar.

Most of this team will disappear next year on national duty at various levels. The continuity that Rahane gives will be very important to guide the next batch of hungry young guys from the maidans.

Aren't all the above are SLAs? Tanush would only have Sundar as a probable competitor.

Saurabh probably is the best SLA in country including Jadeja but his batting/fielding, age and general fitness would rule him out as a long term prospect.

Sai is a seasoned bowler but his batting is not quite the same level as Tanush - speaking strictly on the basis of their FC records.

Shams probably is the closest that comes to Tanush but again there might be room for both given their different bowling styles.

I think as far as offspinners go, yeah I can't think of anyone else apart from Washi.

But India does have the option of playing Kuldeep + 2 SLA's .

Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced that it would be doubling the prize money for the Mumbai team after their triumph in the Ranji Trophy final. Mumbai beat Vidarbha by 169 runs to clinch the 2023/24 Ranji Trophy title at the Wankhede Stadium.

The MCA said that the Mumbai team would receive an additional amount of Rs 5 crore as prize money for winning the Ranji Trophy title after a gap of eight years. Mumbai won the title for the 42nd time, having last won the Ranji Trophy in 2015/16.

MCA secretary Ajinkya Naik confirmed that the Mumbai team players would be getting an additional Rs 5 crore as prize money. Veteran India batter Ajinkya Rahane became the 26th Mumbai captain to win the Ranji Trophy.

”MCA President Amol Kale and Apex Council has decided to double the Ranji Trophy prize money. The MCA will pay additional sum of Rs 5 crore to the winning Mumbai Ranji Trophy team. It has been a great year for the MCA as the association has won 7 titles and we have made it to knockout stage in all age groups in BCCI tournaments,” the statement read.

Mumbai head coach Omkar Salvi heaped praise on MCA’s move to double the prize money, saying this initiative will help young players who don’t have other jobs and sources of income.

“For all the players, nowadays, there are very less institutions which provide jobs. For youngsters, there is also a lot of lure towards franchise cricket (where) there is also a lot of money. The BCCI is taking that step and raising that money along with that, the MCA taking that step forward to equal that amount is a great help for the players who don't have some jobs or some earnings,” said Salvi.

“It is definitely an inspiration (and) it should be intrinsic -- the monetary help will give them that security and it will definitely stabilise them mentally and financially so that they can give more to the game,” Salvi added.

After setting a daunting target of 538 runs, Mumbai bowled out Vidarbha for 368 runs, winning the title by 169 runs on Day 3. Mumbai’s Musheer Khan was named the 'Player of the Match' in the final for scoring a brilliant hundred and picking two wickets.

I saw this. Each winning player will receive roughly USD 100K. That's more than most countries pay the whole team that wins their domestic first class league. 15ish players sharing what 1 player gets in India. Combined with the IPL and smaller leagues, it obviously makes Cricket...even first class cricket a viable career for hundreds maybe even thousands of kids.

Obviously the BCCI can afford this and actually afford a lot more. I've posted elsewhere about their finances and how they're spending a lot lesser than they could be.

Rahane lacks hunger. He was a liability in tests for years and his mediocrity has continued at the domestic level. Flopper badly at both VHT and Ranji.

Most of the current Mumbai team players will be available because there's no slot available in the ICT. Even Shreyas Iyer will be available as he is dropped from the tests. Shivam Dube will also return back from injury.

It's not just the Indian team you have to worry about - there's India A home and tour games, U19 games etc.

Of the finals group, I expect Thakur, Mulani, Musheer, Iyer, Kotian, Shaw to be unavailable for various durations. Kulkarni has retired anyway. So there's going to be a fresh batch.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on urged the BCCI to bring in the recently-launched incentive system for Tests into domestic cricket, Gavaskar told the media on the sidelines of an event:

"I think what Rahul Dravid said, when it was announced in Dharamsala, that he would like to call it a reward."

"That is a wonderful thing by the BCCI to reward those who would be playing but I would also request the BCCI to ensure that the feeder to the Test team, which is the Ranji Trophy, that is also looked after."

"(If) the Ranji Trophy fees can be doubled or tripled, certainly there'll be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, (and a) lot less pull outs from the Ranji Trophy, because if the fees of playing a Ranji Trophy match is a good fee there will be less people pulling out for various reasons."

"They will all be wanting to play with the slab system -- every 10 first-class matches you get that much more, so I would request the BCCI to look at that aspect as well."

"It is something that everybody is aware of. It is something that should be looked up by every cricketer -- domestic cricket is actually how they have come up. If they hadn't started at the domestic cricket level, be it the domestic T20, the domestic one-day tournament or the Ranji Trophy, they wouldn't be where they are."

"Very few cricketers (are there) who've actually come up from not having played domestic cricket, they always have played some domestic cricket, it could be junior cricket or U-19 cricket or something like that. That has to be something that every cricketer must never forget."

"Test cricket will definitely be around. You might not have a five-Test match series between every country, only two or three might play five-Tests. Any tour now will be a mix of Tests, T20Is and ODIs."

Mumbai Cricket Association to pay its Ranji Trophy cricketers match fees in addition to BCCI’s

BCCI's per day match fees is between Rs 40,000 and Rs 60,000 depending on the number of games a cricketer has played during a career; State associations pay only daily allowance.

From next season, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will pay its Ranji Trophy cricketers match fees on par with what they get from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Match fees paid by BCCI is between Rs 40,000 and Rs 60,000 per day depending on the number of games a cricketer has played. The MCA will match this, which means a Mumbai player will get fees from the BCCI as well as the state association.

State associations pay players only daily allowance for domestic games, so the MCA’s decision is a game-changer in terms of money a state-level cricketer will earn from Ranji Trophy.

The decision was taken during the MCA’s Apex Council meeting held on Saturday, MCA president Amol Kale told The Indian Express.

“MCA will be paying additional match fees per Ranji Trophy game to each player from next season onwards. For example if a new player is earning Rs 40,000 per day from the BCCI then MCA will pay them Rs 40,000 too. We felt that players should earn more, especially those who play Ranji Trophy cricket. For us red-ball cricket matters the most as Ranji Trophy holds a special place for everyone in Mumbai,” Kale said.

The BCCI has revised match fees post Covid 19. Players who have played between 1 and 20 Ranji Trophy matches are now paid 40,000 per day. Those who have played 21 to 40 matches get Rs 50,000 per day and those with 41 or more games under their belts get Rs 60,000 per day.

Mumbai won their 42nd Ranji Trophy title earlier this month when they defeated Vidarbha at the Wankhede Stadium.

It is learnt that MCA will have to shell out around Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 3 crore annually for Ranji Trophy match fees.

There is a big pay disparity between IPL players and those who play only for their state teams.

Mumbai opener, Bhupen Lalwani, who was part of Mumbai’s Ranji-winning team, got Rs 17.20 lakh for playing 10 first-class matches. In contrast, the lowest base price for a player at the last IPL auction was Rs 20 lakh. If Mumbai reach the final of next season’s Ranji Trophy, a rookie player will earn about Rs 34 lakhs, the MCA has calculated.

MCA secretary Ajinkya Naik said that the initiative received unanimous support from the Apex Council.

“The MCA recognises the pivotal role that the Ranji Trophy and red ball cricket play in shaping the future of our sport. By aligning with BCCI’s fees and providing additional support, the Apex council aims to create a conducive environment for young cricketers to excel and hone their skills. This initiative reaffirms MCA’s commitment to promoting the rich legacy of Indian cricket and nurturing the talents of tomorrow,” Naik said.

Rs 1 Crore Bonanza For Ranji Stars, Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI Selectors To Play Big Part: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering doubling the remuneration for domestic players. According to a report in Cricbuzz, the national selection committee, led by chairman Ajit Agarkar, has been tasked by the BCCI to help them implement this idea. The sole aim of the idea is to make sure that the non-IPL players do not feel deprived. Currently, the BCCI pays Rs 60,000 per day to a player who has played more than 40 Ranji games.

Similarly, players get Rs 50,000 and Rs 40,000 a day respectively for playing 21-40 matches and 20 matches, respectively.

Meanwhile, the reserve players earn Rs 30,000 and 20,000 a day in the respective categories. In total, a senior player can earn upto Rs 25 lakh if his side reaches the final with others in the side making between Rs 17 lakh and Rs 22 lakh.

"It is understood that different plans are under consideration but there is unanimity among all concerned in the BCCI that the fees for the domestic cricketers has to be doubled at least," the report claimed.

The report also adds that BCCI is considering increasing the scale of payment between Rs 75 lakh and Rs 1 crore if a player features in 10 Ranji Trophy matches.

The players will also earn more for playing in domestic white-ball tournaments such as Vijay Hazare and Mushtaq Ali.

While there is no confirmation regarding this development, the report also reveals that the changes could be made as early as next season.

The move will be aimed at encouraging the domestic players to take part in the Ranji Trophy, and also maximise the earning of the domestic stars who are not featuring in the IPL.

Earlier this year, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced higher match fees for those playing Test matches.

Praising the announcement, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar had suggested that fees for domestic cricketers be doubled or tripled. "If the Ranji Trophy fees can be doubled or tripled, certainly there'll be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, and a lot less pullouts from the Ranji Trophy, because if the fees of playing a Ranji Trophy match are a good fee, there will be fewer people pulling out for various reasons," the cricket legend had stated last month.

Hope Agarkar starts backing proper players for proper formats. With so many hard working first class batsmen around Rohit kept pushing his mumbai mate SKY in Tests/ODIs where he has abysmal record in domestic. Sarfraz was made to wait for long. Even Jaiswal was introduced late.

Domestic cricket restructuring: Ranji Trophy likely to be played in two halves in 2024-25 season

The BCCI is likely to split the prestigious Ranji Trophy into two halves with white-ball tournaments Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy being held in between for the 2024-25 season. It is learnt that a draft proposal for the restructuring of domestic cricket calendar for the 2024-25 season has been sent to the the Board's apex council.

The proposal has been made after consultation with BCCI secretary Jay Shah, India captain Rohit Sharma, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, head coach Rahul Dravid and National Cricket Academy head VVS Laxman. Another proposal is the doing away with the toss for the CK Nayudu Trophy, which will also be organised with a new points system.

As per the new proposed format, five Ranji Trophy league matches will be followed by white ball tournaments -- Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. The remaining two Ranji league matches as well as the knockout stage games will then be held after the conclusion of the two white-ball tournaments.

This has been done in order to meet the challenges posed by inclement weather in the northern part of the country in winter months as well as to ensure gaps between matches. The BCCI has also taken into account the fact that last season's Ranji Trophy was organised with games having only three-day gaps in between including travelling, which did not give players adequate time to rest and recover.

There will be an increased gap between matches to allow players sufficient time for recovery and to maintain peak performance throughout the season, Shah informed the media on Saturday. As per the proposal, the domestic season will begin with Duleep Trophy, which will feature four teams to be picked by the national selectors.

The Irani Cup will follow the Duleep Trophy after which the Ranji Trophy will be held in two halves. In the CK Nayudu Trophy which won't feature the toss of coin, the visiting team will have the right to decide whether to bat or bowl first.

The CK Nayudu Trophy will implement a new points system aimed at promoting balanced performances. This includes awarding points for batting and bowling performances in the first innings, in addition to points for the first innings lead or outright win, said Shah. The Board will also be assessing the effectiveness of the new point system employed for CK Nayudu Trophy at the end of the season and a decision would be taken if the same has to be implemented for the Ranji Trophy as well for the following season.

In women's cricket, all inter-zonal tournaments, including one-day, T20 and multi-day format competitions, will have the teams selected by the national selectors.

The time of reckoning is coming for BCCI. The so called restructuring above is a bandage at best.

BCCI needs a comprehensive review of every aspect of cricket it administers and make peace with the fact that at very best India can have 2 months of off season during peak monsoon.

India will soon have to consider having its home international season during summer as well - post IPL. Test matches in Bangalore and other cooler, high elevation venues. Same with part of its domestic cricket - SMAT, VHT and maybe even a part of Ranji.

This should make space for a less cluttered winter season to accommodate Ranji, part of international cricket and an expanded IPL.

BCCI appeals to state units: Pay Ranji Trophy cricketers match fees in addition to what they receive from Board

According to the BCCI statement, the meeting with members of the state associations was convened at the recently renovated BCCI office.

It was an informal gathering of all the state units at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters on Monday.

And as they exchanged ideas and watched India’s T20 World Cup fixture against Australia, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah appealed to the state units to take cue from Mumbai Cricket Association’s decision to pay it’s Ranji Trophy cricketers match fees in addition to what the Board pays, and come up with similar plans in their respective associations.

Some of the state units were of the opinion that if such a move needs to be taken, it has to be done across the board and not restricted to just Ranji Trophy teams. “The idea was floated by the secretary but a consensus could not be reached. So, it is likely that the matter will be discussed later when the apex council meets,” a BCCI insider said.

I cant believe it that Kohli didnt play domestic cricket for 12 years. That is just terrible.

As per reports: 27,813 People on the 1st day of a Ranji Trophy match between Railways and Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium

KOhli bowled for 6 lol stump uprooted. Bro has to give up tests. HE is not even good enough for domestic. Went to play 5 tests in Australia.

Kohli should just give up

Went to fix old vulnerabilities. Instead he’s discovering new ones.

Probably can't see the ball through the smog.

Either way, if Kohli can't make runs in whatever Ranji games he plays - he should not be picked for England.

Whether Kohli makes runs in Ranji trophy or not, he should not be picked for England tour. Period.

Just like Australia tour, we'll be taking 1 passenger to UK.

'Pitch Fixing' In Ranji Trophy? Jammu And Kashmir Accuse Baroda Of Tampering, Hosts Deny

The Jammu and Kashmir men’s first-class team accused Baroda of ‘pitch fixing’ and tampering on the third day of their crucial match in the 2025 Ranji Trophy at the Reliance Stadium. The Jammu and Kashmir players protested because they felt the surface they saw in the morning was different from the one they played on the second day, leading to a significant delay in the start of the day’s play.

The match was a decider for the playoffs in Group A. A draw would have seen visitors J&K through while Baroda needed an outright win to qualify. J&K were at 125/1 at the start of the day with a lead of 205 runs.

According to a report in The Indian Express, the visiting coach Ajay Sharma felt the colour of the pitch had changed and believed the pitch had been tampered with. He brought up the issue with umpires Pashchim Pathak and Ravi Teja and the match referee Arjan Kripal Singh.

After much deliberation, the match started around 11 am IST, 1.5 hours after the scheduled time. The official reason the BCCI mentioned for the delay was ‘dampness in the pitch’. Baroda denied the accusation and cited the same reason for the alleged change in color of the 22 yards.

“The allegations made by the J&K coach are baseless. The outfield was wet and due to winter there was moisture on the pitch and even the outfield was wet. The umpire too felt the same. Anyone who has played cricket will understand that during winter there is moisture on the pitch and sometimes the outfield takes time to dry. Sometimes matches are delayed but calling it as pitch-fixed and blaming the association for this, we will not accept these allegations. We will be approaching the BCCI for remarks made by the coach," the newspaper reported quoted a Baroda Cricket Association official as saying.

J&K led by 314 runs with the fall of their ninth wicket at 234 runs. Baroda captain Krunal Pandya and two other spinners, Mahesh Pithiya and Ninad Rathva had taken three wickets each. The same bowlers had combined for nine wickets in the first innings too, with Rathva leading with a five-wicket-haul.

During the Ranji Trophy semi-final match between Kerala and Gujarat, a bizarre dismissal took place that caught everyone's attention. Kerala's left-arm spinner Aditya Sarwate tossed the ball up, and Gujarat's Arzan Nagwaswalla swung hard at it. The ball hit Salman Nizar's helmet at short leg and ricocheted off, lobbing to Sachin Baby at slip, who took the catch. This unusual dismissal resulted in Gujarat being all out just two runs short of Kerala's total, which ultimately helped Kerala advance to the final of the tournament.
