This is the issue with all these Indian players (Pant, Rahul, etc). If they played for other teams then they would have got all the time on earth to get settled in their respective positions and excelled based on their merits! Whether they lived up to their potential or not is a different issue, but at least they wouldn't have had issues in building their career!

Pant had to compete with Dhoni. Dhoni was blocking his way at the crucial time when Pant was needed to get settled in LOI team! But in tests his life was easy as Dhoni was not in his way! Hence there's no surprise in whatever he achieved in tests (two overseas centuries against two quality teams - historically "quality test teams"!) That is the proof for his talent which has to be seen without the aid of stats, bias, prejudice & hatred!

Similarly Rahul's path was blocked by Rohit. Rahul's performance in a tough home test series against Australia is the proof of his talent (Where he had no competition for Test Opener slot! But he spoiled this too which is a different story!) His aspiration for LOIs (which required to compete with established pair of Dhawan/Rohit) tweaking of technique/temperament affected him! This wouldn't have happened if he was playing for a lesser team which would not have had players like Rohit! So he would have grown in his own way!

At least Rahul's case was tough as Rohit/Dhawan were irreplaceable (It needed him to perform almost like Bradman to challenge them!) But Pant was bit like hard done because we wasted all the important time to accommodate aging Dhoni (in LOIs & his last World Cup!) instead of giving Pant most of the chances (Remember Jayasuriya, Atapattu & so many important Sri Lankan players wouldn't have achieved what they achieved for their country, if the selectors/fans were axing them for how they started their careers! Thankfully they played for a lesser team to start with and they helped that team to grow stronger!)

So the case with these promising players is a combination of the competition they are getting + the internal politics/favoritism/lobby/regionalism etc! Yes competition is there (in even more severe standards) with past Australia/West Indies sides, but at least there was no other hindrance/obstacles for talented players to deal with! Either they excel in their career or perish if they are not good enough (which is a fair deal!) It wouldn't have been so complicated as in India! (At least in 90s, 80s teams talented professional cricketers were rare to find, so all these issues didn't look that big those times!)

His 159* v Australia got us from a decent position into an unassailable one and ensure we won the series and not just drew it

His 100 v England was chasing an improbable 460,which while Rahul and Pant were going ,it looked possible.Had they been together for another 50-75 runs it would have got close

More importantly these runs were scored against the likes of Starc,Cummins,Anderson,Broad etc.That in the first tours.Show me any other Asian who did this

He came in at 329-5.Good but it can easily change to 420 all out and opposition like Aus can crawl in

But we got to 600 and batted Aus out of the series
 
Seems like Umar Akmal. Has talent, but rarely will he apply himself well enough to make a useful score under pressure. He may slog it out when the match is gone, or when a good platform is set, and make some runs.

Problem with Umar was the way he was handled by Pakistani team management.India knows how to nurture batsmen

Every other player in this era (last 10 years, since Umars debut) has been handled by the same team management. If it was the managements fault, you'd expect more than one case of a lost batting talent. The fault is solely on Umar Akmal.

That's the problem. However, he is a full-time wicket keeper, and even purely as a test batsman has already achieved much much more than Umar could.

I don't know how much more time will it take for him to return back in Indian squad but his inning of 159* was really a high quality inning in Australia. He got those runs at a strike rate of 84 on a relatively flatter wicket but that bowling attack was top standard and that inning never looked like a fluke one.

His below par keeping standards is what stopping him from getting a run.

can't he just become a proper batsman and we can use ks bharat or someone else as a proper keeper once saha retires.
 
People need to go easy on this bloke.

He’s young and has played some absolute gems.

Players are and should be groomed.

He’s one of those players who look like they’ve it in them to perform at the highest level

Fgs Babar Hanged on to his spot on tests solely based on his loi exploits till 2018 umar couldn't do **** in Loi as well so Its Pretty Baseless argument
.Umar Played for Pakistan in both 2011 and 2015 World Cups and in addition to that
2009 2012 2014 2016( asia cup and T20)

Frankly I think his mind is cluttered right now, he is better off away from team right now.... Playing Ranji may not be a bad idea...

Harping on his 100's when he gives 3 catches in 10 minutes doesn't really help the argument

The mind is cluttered because he has not been backed as he should have been.Both Kohli and Shastri have criticised

Harping on 100s shows ability,if he can be consistently played both home and away I'm sure he'll feel settled and do better.

Agree with Kohli and Shastri not handling him well but he isn't the only one who got that... They dropped Pujara, Rahane and Bhuvi in SA / WI etc...

In India if you want to play as test batsman, you need to score 100's and also look safe while batting.. He has scored 2 good hundreds but outside of that he has looked poor, to the point that one may think that those 100's were flukes....

Being dropped at home without opportunity is different from overseas tours.Plus he's younger.Rahane isnt doing anything either but no one talks of that

He isn't a specialist batsman and shouldn't be compared with them.In 12 Tests he has 2 tons and 2 50s. Vihari for example has 1 ton in 8 matches with 3 50s

One ton can be fluke but not 2 specially against those quality bowlers.I don't remember even specialist batsmen doing it on their first tours

Has he made any major keeping error in this series?

His story seems to be going like the Umar Akmal way, I hope it doesn't end that way....

I will reiterate that the main issue with him is that he looks like a brain dead ugly slogger every time he gets out, so notwithstanding his 100's, if he doesn't grind out 50's in tests he will be replqced...

Ofcourse he will look ugly when it doesnt go his way.But thats his game .He will win games too specially in India.I thought he looked good in first Test before being run out by Rahane.Was quite restrained too

Replaced by who?Please don't say Saha.Samson is talented too but I'm not sure he keeps in longer format.

Its way too early to write him off. Give him continous runs and if he fails sure.Right now he is only playing overseas

Anyway he has kept okay too
 
Kept well.That catch of Jamieson was excellent.

Just for this he needs to backed.

Not expecting much with the bat where top score is 24 so far.Lets see
 
There isn't a better option available with the bat. It will be too much workload for Rahul if we go with him.

Saha doesn't help the batting at all and he won't get any better now. Atleast a 22 year old can still get better. He has the capability to average around 38-40 in international cricket over longer run. Around 45 in Asia and slightly over 30 overseas.

I never said write him offf..... I am saying he should play 1/2 seasons of Ranji and come back... He has a lot of time left and frankly very little competition....

His keeping is okay, he can improve just like Dhoni did....

But he needs to learn to grind runs, the care free batting only take you that far

He has already played 23 FC matches and dominated the scene.Thats how he got into the team for Eng tour

He has kept well in this series hasnt he? That catch of Jamieson today.So he's doing his primary job decently.

His technique isnt suited for grinding .Still In first Test he was doing that.I would much rather have him batting positively

Lol what an excuse. Now keeping has become his primary job again whereas few months ago fans were saying that he can play as a batsman alone. Saha does this primary job better than Pant so shouldn't he be in the team? :inti

Saha does it better than Dhoni did too,yet we played Dhoni and rightly so.The days of pure WK are over long ago

I said decently not great.He can still improve.Atleast didnt drop anything this tour

We want him to play tests because he is a better batsman but the way he plays he reduces his percentage of high scores significantly...

Again not worried about his keeping as he can improve and frankly he is neither a Kamran Akmal and nor a Latif

I will prefer him to improve while staying in the team.A home season would have helped him lot to figure out the tempo of innings to play.

Also there is no other alternative that is significantly better,so better to keep faith in him

India has to look beyond Pant. He can be in ODI or T20 teams. Test cricket is not for him. He is a gutless cricketer and plays like a headless chicken most of the time.
 
This guy looked like a proper hack when I first saw him in a world cup game vs England.

Pant is not a major concern for India right now. There are bigger concerns in this team which should be prioritized more. I don't think Saha would have made any difference to this team either.

Our team has batsmen who average 60-70 at home but overseas that average drops to 35. The way Ajinkya Rahane batted in 2nd inning, time has come to make decision on him. An average of 42 isn't acceptable for a guy who has got so much of experience, so much of backing and has went on to play 65 tests.

His average now : 38.76

I think he will take his average back to 50 before australia tour? :inti

At least we will hear less about his average and how well he bats in SENA.
They often talk about his 2 hundreds, but the truth is that let alone hundreds, this guy can't make 30 crucial runs.

Dhoni was best ever to spinner,but keeping to pacers he wouldn't even try if was slightly to his right or left.Saha is way better in that.

Pant has lots of talent and shots but this comes with the baggage of a faulty technique against pace and movement. He will destroy attacks on his day but being hitter can only take you so far. No substitute for a proper technique.
 
He should play Gully Dhanda. I mean the guy is one overated slogger. They are better off with Saha behind the stumps at least the guy can keep.

The problem with India at the moment is that all current keepers they have are inspired by IPL and more of hitters than conventional Sagakara type players who are bound to fail overseas.

At home they may succeed but at home India is already strong and couldnt care less.

nah KL beast Rahul will step in. He is the future. He will go down as a legend. I doubted him in the past but no more. He is perfect for middle order to give india that stability in tests odi. He can open in t20 as t20 is a tournament for hacks.

yes why not? he was a neutral keeper batsman. I can't stand pant. Anyone over him. Hell I would take sarfraz over him. We all know pant can bash teams in Asia and australia. Maybe south africa but the ball seams a bit there. He is useless vs swing. N.z, England is a no no. I trust Rahul everywhere if he is in form. Rahul defecates on pant in terms of talent.

probably not as good a keeper* as saha. Saha is ridiculously flexible and athletic. But the positive is he can bat and can become as good as babar who is clearly world class. He can be India's babar. Babar is a generational talent and I see the same qualities in Rahul. Rahul's issue is mental. He is very technically gifted. Ipl money has ruined him a little but now he is finally starting find form.

Sangakkara didn't keep in most of his Tests.So that comparison is useless

Another keeper who was hitter was Gilly.Not saying our current keepers are near him,but the approach isn't bad.Ofcourse we'll know who's good after few games only

Rahul keeping in Tests would be too much.Even in LOIs its a temporary arrangement

So you agree Pant can do well in Asia,Australia. That itself is good enough for a young keeper bat.He and Rahul had similar series in England.

Would love Rahul to replace Rahane at 5.But keeping would be too much workload as he isnt a natural.

I said Sankakara type player not Sangakara as I dont think they have a keeper batsmen as good as sangakara who actually has better average than Sachin.

then we are screwed. KS bharat maybe the only option. india need a keeper for swing conditions. Someone who can counter swing. pant is useless vs swing.

honestly they just need to play county before an England or n.z series like pakistan do.
 
India would rather do themselves well to first find couple of batters who can play swing, let alone finding a keeper batsmen who can play swing and seam.

Our batters who score centuries for fun in India struggle to score a 50 across 3 innings. That is a major issue to be sorted first.

Only hype nothing else.. Even Parthiv patel would have become a great player if he got as many chances as this guy..

India should play KL Rahul in limited overs and Saha in test cricket.
no need for his quickfire 20 in test cricket in indian conditions.
 
Rishabh Pant as dominant as Sehwag, Yuvraj: Suresh Raina

NEW DELHI: Out-of-favour India cricketer Suresh Raina has to Rishabh Pant's defense, stating that when the young wicket-keeper-batsman is on song, he could be as dominant as Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh.

Raina feels Pant can go on to become a top cricketer for the country as he possesses all the natural talent that a cricketer should.

"He is a top cricketer, when he plays well, you become happy and he reminds of Yuvraj and Sehwag, he is as dominant as them, when he plays the flick, it reminds you of Dravid as well," Raina said during a live video session hosted by spinner Yuzvendra Chahal on Instagram on Monday.

Before cricket was stopped due to coronavirus, Pant had lost his place in the team in white-ball cricket to KL Rahul. Pant's inconsistencies with the bat cost him dear as Indian team management handed over the wicketkeeping gloves to Rahul, who took over the role with great ease.

Vice-captain Rohit Sharma had earlier launched a passionate defense of Pant as well and had said that immense media scrutiny puts him under great pressure and one shouldn't forget he is still young.

"I talk to Rishabh Pant more, he is just 20-21, he was under so much of scrutiny that he got tensed. Media thinks its part of their job to write but they should be sensible and think before writing something as it plays a huge part," Rohit had said.

India wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has already seen fair share of ups and downs in his career so far. The left-handed batsman had a terrific away tour in Australia in 2018, when he went on to hammer a quickfire ton in the 4th Test. Despite series of terrific performances leading up to the World Cup last year, the youngster was not included in the squad for the tournament. But an injury to Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar led to Pant being called into the squad, though he could not make an impact in the tournament.

The young Delhi batsman also struggled to find runs and often faced criticism for his wicketkeeping skills last year, and at the start of 2020, KL Rahul replaced him as keeper in the team for the limited-overs series against New Zealand.

Despite the career graph, Pant is still regarded as one of the best talents present in the country at the momen, with many suggesting he could be a match-winner for the team one day. In an Instagram live video to Delhi Capitals, Pant revealed the advice given to him by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, who was the mentor of DC franchise in the 2018 season.

“He told me ‘You need to give yourself some time and then you can do whatever you want to do’,” the 21-year-old said. He always wanted me to do well. He told me a few things and I tried them also. It helped,” he added.

Pant also revealed how DC coach Ricky Ponting shaped his stay at the franchise. Pant said that Ponting has always allowed him to play his natural game. “He gives me a free hand. He says do whatever you want to do,” Pant said.
