We rate it very highly but it’s not an ATG knock by any means. ATG knocks are a different breed altogether - Pant’s 97 came on a flat patta against the same bowling attack that Yasir Shah scored 100 against.

End result was helping draw the match, but actually if not for Vihari and Ashwin who did hard work to save the match, Pant’s runs were soft because he got out when India needed him...

So I repeat, if Pant’s knock is ATG then Kami’s was GOAT!
 
Just a reminder that Kamran Akmal's overall average was 30 in tests even after playing many tests at home.
 
If Vihari and Ashwin hadn’t saved the match, Pant’s innings would be like Pandya’s at CT17 final.

Still 44 overs left when Pant got out. 90% of the time you won’t have an innings like Ashwin and Vihari and even most Indian fans knew the match was lost. He definitely changed the complexion of the match and I rate it very, very highly but how is it ATG?

We’re talking about innings, not overall careers. Pant is much better than Kami but that doesn’t make this an ATG knock lol.

Actually just imagine if pant got out on 20 odd, what would have happened?
I am damn sure that this wouldn't have been a draw and we would have skittled for 200 odd runs.

I am imagining that, and hence I’m saying it’s a very very good knock and I rate Pant highly. However best not to jump the gun and call this guy Adam Gilchrist.

Pant's knock was a good one but not an ATG one. Pant fans are trying to prove OP right again and again by overhyping him. :inti

Needs to score 5000+ runs at 45 average to come anywhere near him.

As I said before , if Pant's knock is ATG then we have too many ATGs which contradicts it mathematically as one can't have couple of 100s of ATG knocks. By definitions ATG knocks has to be select few of many, really the cream of everything since day 1 of test cricket history, like top 50 or 100 if somebody really wants to stretch it. It is a really good fearless innings but there is no way it becomes ATG. Because if it is I have to rate Ashwin's and Vihari's in that same bracket.

Yes, Pant's innings put the Aussies in backfoot and gave hope of the impossible when nobody dreamt but when he and Pujara got out it was the natural inevitable accepted by us that we will bundle out quickly. Except Vihari and Ashwin felt otherwise and showed tremendous mental strength and discipline to play out 45 overs against top notch bowling without any hiccup. The clarity of their mind based on the injury circumstances and awareness of the capability of batsmen to follow them is just so admirable. And then to remain brave and steady for 1 & 1/2 session and play out rest of the day and not try to make futile attempts for the target inspite of temptations in their subconscious and finally to actually execute it successfully is really ATG stuff.

Greatest wickie batsmen since Adam Gilchrist... Could already be a top 5 best batsmen going around, coming in at 4 is his natural position than 6 or 7..
 
I really do feel bad for ppl like Mobashir and the Wridhi Mahaan Swahha supporters, this will be hard for them...

This is indeed an ATG innings by Pant. It's not easy to chase down 320+ at Gabba against the best bowling line up in these conditions.

Pant is pure talent.. and he is yet, still to be unleashed fully.
He has much higher ceiling.
Imagine him opening in ODI's and Changing games at number 5 in Test matches in coming 2-3 years.

I have already called it an ATG knock if that makes you sleep well. Regarding judging of talent. I am against the overhype some players get. I don't hype any players here. There is a long long way to go still. Just relax and enjoy the win. :inti
 
Rishabh Pant deserves not just one chance, not 10 chances, not 50 but 100 chances if he can bat like this :inti

And to think that Kohli-Shastri played Saha over him in the first test !

Kohli's departure was probably a blessing in disguise in that regard.

His insane ability was clear right from his first few games for India. It is unbelievable how some people didn’t, or chose to not see it.

He is the most talented WK batsman to emerge out of Asia since Dhoni in 2004-05.

He will be one of the greatest players of the 2020-30 decade.
 
Good thread to find who can read the game/players and who frankly, are extremely cricket illiterate.
 
He may be turning into another Gilly. He has played many sensational knocks outside of India. He won't come off all the time, but what an impact player.
 
Pant now averages 79.50 in the 4th innings.
Really gutsy player who stands up in the crunch moments.

Also, his temperament was really good to see today. He did not go on an all out attack but chose which bowlers/balls to target.

The maturity he showed, where he played near 50 strike rate for most of the innings, was telling. He was not blindly slogging

That thread had merit in the beginning.

But Pant has performed extremely in all our domestic tournaments, short and long form. Hype was warranted. And quality was obvious. Some people just don't get cricket.

He could have played a Kamran Karachi type innings there and even help us win. He was dropped after scoring 100 in the practice match

He has a bulky build but is very fit. He was a gymnast and can still do that

He hasn’t found the right balance in ODI cricket yet. One of the main reasons for that is that he plays a lot of high percentage shots and they are difficult to execute in the middle-order because the field is spread.

He will eventually adjust and evolve because he is too talented not to, but if India want to get the best out of him right now, they need to open with him so that he can utilize the PP overs.

However, there is no space for him up the order because of Rohit and Dhawan/Rahul. It is an embarrassment of riches for India.

Agreed. His batting at the moment is suited up the order. Plus the have gill in line for the opening spot so he will have to adjust.

No player is above criticism.
He hasn't done anything special in LOI's still.
Nobody will remember IPL performances and everyone will remember international performances just like the ATG knock he played today.

To those who haven't watched the game...Pant actually OUTWITTED Lyon big time.

Wouldn't slog if fielders were spread out.

Had a bit of luck going his way (you always need that).

Towards the end, had a massive brainfade but boy...what a knock it was.

Gilchrist averaged just 30 or 35 in ODIs. If Pant manages such a career and be the Gun in test cricket, he will end up being an Atg
 
I agree. There was 1-2 rash shots in the entire innings. He played like a man with years of experience, showed lot maturity and calmness and ensured that we pace the innings properly to the end without taking any undue risk. This is indeed ATG, you don't get these type of innings everyday.

And I will repeat the Sydney innings was pretty great but not ATG. The best thing is he learnt from that and his application this time was superb. It will be a travesty to not make him the first choice WK - Batsman from now onwards. He is still a work in progress with gloves but we need to let him swim.
 
What a player man. If you didn't rate this guy, you have no clue about talent.

As I have said many times , other than Mamoon I will rarely trust a Pakistani when it comes to judging an Indian player.
