The Zulqarnain Haider Story

I really think he should be thrown back to Pakistan. Our Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Foreign Minister both should handle this issue now by getting this guy back in Pakistan. This will set a wrong example if he get away with this cheap act.

Wow, that was fast! NOTW makes its appearance.

He says he was offered money by them and he turned it down (yeah right). But gave them an interview anyway. Goes on in the rest of the article again about how he would give any money taken to charity, etc etc.

Haider: Media offered me huge money

Zulqarnain Haider has claimed to have turned down lucrative offers from the media to disclose the details of his decision.

The 24-year-old wrote on his facebook account that the 'News of the World' tabloid had offered him lots of money for an interview but he spoke to them without taking a penny.

"They offered me lots of money but I gave them the interview free of cost but what was surprising was that they said it would be half an hour thing but it went on for one and half hour," Haider wrote.

"They were trying to ask hard questions but I told them they should talk to the ICC about it," Haider wrote on his account.

http://www.espnstar.com/cricket/int...em530562/Haider:-Media-offered-me-huge-money/

But still, I would wait for more papers to report this. Or better yet, wait for this Sunday's issue of NOTW! :))

His father is asking him to return to Pakistan/Dubai and clear all this mess. His brother says that he is playing into the hands of someone else. His wife says she is fine living in Pakistan and will not move to England.

His family initially had no threats it was just him. Now, he has changed it to threats to his family as well.

First, the bookie met him in person near some restaurant (with 2 guys hiding in the background), then that changed to getting messages on his phone (wonder how he got his phone number?), finally now the bookie sent him letter too (1970s anyone? I thought we had progressed since).

He says he doesnt want asylum, then changes that to yes i do want asylim in England (which I am quite certain the British government will grant him). He claims that he doesnt know anything about anyone else, yet claims that ICC should tap phones of all the players.

kya yeh sab khula tazaad nahi?:ekdin

his story changes every other day. how does anyone accept us to believe him?

No way! He's a sportsperson, and there's obviously help available to him from the government of Pakistan and the ICC so Britain won't grant him an asylum just because he fancy living there. We're ignoring the fact how tough Britain's has become on immigration.

Zulqarnain is in my FB friend list...his new status are...

Zulqarnain Haider (Zulqarnain Haider Cricketer)
1 paper said kamran said 2 me fr fixx the 4 and 5th one day match its wrong news

So as expected......NOTW will have an exclusive from Zoni on Sunday. People still willing to believe him?

I just went through the last few pages.. Some of the posts here are HILARIOUS! :)))

Can somebody please tell Zoni to stop giving interviews to every ABC XYZ newspaper and tv channel or else PPers will kill him?!
I'm sure such a threat is the only way to stop this guy from making a fool of himself.

According to Dunya News, now he has met Ansar Burney concerning his asylum case. The guy wants the red passport really bad.

If I was Ansar Burney I would think twice about wading in this case.....Ansar Burney is the same guy who worked tirelessly to have an Indian prisoner (held responsible for murder of Pakistanis in bomb blast) released from Lahore jail, who when crossed the border admitted he was an Indian spy!

Hahaha I know. Even though the guy has done a lot of good work, I feel this is the second time he will be duped.

News of the world has Zulaqarnain for one and half hour, offered him enormous amount of money.
link http://blogs.bettor.com/Media-offered-me-big-money-to-tell-all-says-Zulqarnain-Haider-a40674

Yeah I copy pasted a news item regarding this a few posts back. Even though he has the attention of all the related top news agencies of the world, he couldn't say no to the one agency which has such a bad reputation among Pakistanis right now. No, please dont tell me he is stupid and cant say no to anyone. He knows very well what he is doing.

"Didn't take any money.." yeah right!

Hahaha I know. Even though the guy has done a lot of good work, I feel this is the second time he will be duped.

The Ansar Burney Trust has done a lot of good work in helping stranded Pakistanis abroad.... Like you, I would advise Burney to stay away from Zoni.

If he's given an interview to NOTW for free, despite them offerring lots of money - now that is stupid!

Either don't do the interview, or else don't give them a freebie - might as well make them pay for it.
They're going to twist everything anyway, whether they've paid him or not.
He could have taken the money and given it to charity - and still given NOTW some cock-and-bull story.

if his asylum request is rejected, we will see a man who has lost everything. he is not important but has raised some important questions. he is dead right. 50% people have stopped watching cricket. i can see it even on pakpassion.

This is the icing on the cake for me, by doing this interview for no apparent reason this guy has proven once again that he is nothing more than a attention seeker, I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth from now onward.

ppl! open ur eyes and see this:

why is that that before any fishy match, in which some ppl also get caught, why is it that HE is the one that is dropped??? same thing happened in england....same thing happened in dubai......when he was not even bad behind the stumps.....

something is definitely wrong....why only him? why is he always sent out?? is it because every other player is co-operating with the bookies apart from him?

Who got caught on this tour?

Abdul Qadir is also saying that it seems to be pre-planned by Zulqarnain. He says he doesn't want to say anything against him but he cant help it now.

If the story about him being dropped for the 5th ODI is true, then there is DEFINITELY match-fixing going on. There's no way in hell any player can be dropped after that innings in the 4th ODI.

^ After his 3 dropped catches, his keeping spot was in question. And there is a VAST difference in between playing a "match-winning knock" and scoring the "winning runs"....

The more I read Zoni's story, the more I am convinced that he has staged it to get UK asylum. He is not credible at all

From Cricinfo.
In an interview with BBC, Haider confirmed the approach was made before the fourth ODI, in which his unbeaten 19 helped Pakistan home in a nail-biter. Taffazul Rizvi, the board's legal advisor, asked why Haider waited until Monday before deciding to leave; the latest the approach could have occurred was Thursday (the fourth ODI was on Friday), which means he waited four days before leaving.

Reports have also emerged indicating Haider was on the verge of being dropped from the one-day line-up. The influential Urdu daily Jang claimed in a front page report, citing team sources, that Haider was not inked in to be a part of either the fourth or fifth ODI. Instead, in a bid to find a better balance to the side, the team management was keen on doubling up Umar Akmal as a batsman-wicketkeeper in his place.

But an ankle injury prevented Umar Akmal from playing the fourth ODI and though he fulfilled that role after Haider's departure in the last ODI, Jang claims he would have done so regardless of Haider's status. The report suggests that Haider had been told of his 'resting' the evening before the last ODI.

Points highlighted in bold clearly suggest Zulqernain is trying to hit back at the team management. His stated series of events doesnt match with the logic of fleeing he's giving. I think he has ruined Pakistan's Cricket Image more with the drama he has done. It only provided English Media another bite of the cherry (cherry being Pakistan here)

He didnt score a triple century lol. Performed poorly with the bat most of the series.

No but it doesn't make sense to drop a keeper to a person who's only kept once in his life lool

What in the hell are you talking about? Some of you posters make it sound like he scored 60(10). ffs, he scored 18 and that too at below a run a ball. He did nothing but stay at the crease. Management was right to want to drop him, 90% of this forum wanted the same thing.

He's horrible with the bat and his keeping was mediocre at the best of times.

A show playing on Aaj News right now. Sarfraz Nawaz doesn't buy Zulqarnain's story either.

That seals it. He's just a drama queen, who's about to be caught crying wolf.

Maybe I am being naive, but this is what could have happened:

Zulqarnain was told by the bookie that he would not be part of the team if he did not co-operate (according to his interviews). So when he was told about this, maybe he thought "oh f***, that guy was right. " Maybe he thought that the management/senior players were in on it because of this and as a result, didnt know who to trust. Hence, he left.

I agree that it was a stupid thing to do, but from what I've seen of him, he doesnt seem to be all there mentally. His facebooking and whatnot would be proof of that. Anyway, he doesnt strike me as the evil genius type to be honest.

I think we should wait for the facts to come out before jumping to conclusions, but I also think he deserves the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

Very likely. A gross, gross overreaction. I believe he wasn't meant to play in the 4th ODI anyways.

The two highlighted parts tell me that you don't know anything about batting in ODIs, and about batting to the situation. Or that you are pretending that you don't know.

Having said that, I do admit that he might be a 'limited' ODI batsman (one with tremendous potential however). But that innings in the 4th ODI was a match-winning one regardless. No honest management would drop a player who's beaming with confidence.

Also, take into account his 'axing' from the Test squad after that splendid innings of 88 against England. And if you still think that all is rosy in the camp, then you're in denial.

Spot on. Imagine what he would've felt like if Afridi (or Alam) came to him and said 'Sorry, we have to drop you. That innings wasn't good enough.' Whether it was coincidental or not, Haider must have connected it with what the bookies said. And if that part was true, then the rest of what the bookies said (about his family being in danger) would have been true as well in his mind.

So you try to take a shot at my cricket knowledge because you misunderstood exaggeration? And I'm the stupid one?

Anyways, take a look at the scorecard. It was a team effort, "match winning" implies that it was an individual or mostly individual effort, ex; Razzaq's century. This win was set up thanks to Younis's vital 70. Without that, there would have been no contest. Afridi and Razzaq came in and blitzed a few to get us a bit closer, but what really pushed us over the line towards the end was Wahab. Zoni just stuck around. Thats all he did.

To say he's a "limited ODI batsmen" is an understatement. He's a tailender, pure and simple. Look at his domestic List A average for more proof.

I did not once say that everything was just fine in the camp, only that this guy here is childish. After the recent fixing scandal and the PCB on a rampage to ban anyone at the slightest mention of the word "fix", I don't think theres any fixing going on atm. Spot fixing, sure, its hard to prove one way or another but not match fixing.

I agree that he was unfairly dropped after his 88, that was a good innings and he can make up for his technical failings [every now and then] in Test cricket by just hanging around at the crease.

You can say I'm in denial, but I've given you no reason to think that. That just shows that you're a part of the "Zoni is a hero lets give him a cake" crowd. I believe fixing went on all the time in Pakistan cricket, especially with the shady characters and corruption surrounding our board.

However, Zoni's story has a million holes in it and a logical explanation for anything suspicious. He was about to be dropped? Not because he wasn't down with the match fixers, maybe because he sucks. Now to take a shot at your cricket knowledge, if you think Zoni is a good batsmen, you're dumb as bricks. Furthermore though, batting at the death while chasing in a tight run chase such as this would require some heavy hitting. You clearly don't understand the modern ODI run chase, in the PP overs you hit out and make those 1's into 2's and those 3's into 4's. Don't believe me? Just look at Hussey's knocks against Pakistan in Aus, Cameron White v India, Harbhajan v Pakistan in the Asia Cup.

Suppose even if Waqar Younis and co. were into this match fixing mafia and dropped Zoni for that reason, his actions are not those of a rational or sane man. Running away to England to protect your family in Pakistan? Brilliant.

Look at the facts, folks. Day by day the picture being painted is less of an innocent man being threatened and more of a child overreacting.

Is that true in Shia section of Islam, the more you lie the more swaab you get! is it just a myth or is there an element of truth in it? I heard such a thing from some of my sunni friends.

my question is, why did manager give him the passport in the first place? This whole drama could be avoided by PCB! If he was asking his passpoirt for buying a SIM, why didn't manager himself buy it for him?

Something fishy is going on that's why PCB is silent!

Lol no its not true.

If you believe that than you need more help than Zoni!

He is the manager, not a chaprasi that he will go about doing the shopping for the players. I would think that it would be very common for players to ask for their passport to buy things, go to night clubs, etc and the manager didnt notie anything unusual

And now, thanks to what Zoni did, the players would never be able to get their passport for ANYTHING. In fact, now the PCB would be fully justified in following them even in their bedrooms and keeping an eye on them even in the bathrooms. Who knows when the next player decides to leave the hotel through the ventilation and the next thing they know, he is at the immigration desk of another country asking for asylum.

Zoni just stuck around. Thats all he did...

...I agree that he was unfairly dropped after his 88, that was a good innings and he can make up for his technical failings [every now and then] in Test cricket by just hanging around at the crease.

...That just shows that you're a part of the "Zoni is a hero lets give him a cake" crowd.

Just look at Hussey's knocks against Pakistan in Aus, Cameron White v India, Harbhajan v Pakistan in the Asia Cup.
First of all, he won the match by staying at the crease. He didn't have to hit out. The runrate was fine, as is evident in the fact that we won. Wahab and the others ensured that the runrate was on target. So of course it was a team effort, but his effort was just as crucial as Younis Khan's or anyone else for that matter. And hence, dropping a player after such a game is ridiculous. If you are going to treat him like that, then why pick him in the first instance? The fact that they've done that to him twice already is prepostorous. (Of course, all of this is assuming the fact that he was meant to be dropped for the 5th ODI...a fact that we don't know for sure, but it seems to be that way).

So comparisons to Hussey or Cameron White, etc do not apply to this match at all.

I don't think Zoni is a hero. Not yet at least. But I think something really painful can drive a man to do something as drastic as ditch his national team...especially after working so hard for so many years to realise that dream, and being at the best peak of your career. So I give him the benefit of the doubt, until all this mess clears up.

The evidence says that he is a decent chap. His mom passed away of cancer, and he donated his first match earnings to this cause. He even has his own charity foundation, which for some one at the age of 24 shows a great deal about his passions in life. And he, of all people, knew that he was axed unjustly after his fantastic debut Test. But he stayed quiet about it then.

So because of all of the above, I will not judge him until this case is over. And I don't think it will be over any time soon.

Thats fine and dandy, but none of that has anything to do with this situation. If we're going to bring in matters outside the scope of this event, then why not mention that he was found with alcohol in 2006? Because it would taint the picture and judgement of the issue at hand.

I have no qualms with him leaving the team if his life has been seriously and maliciously threatened-- he should've gone back to Pakistan and to his family. No, instead he went to England and is now applying for asylum. Fishy.

On the matter of him being dropped, scoring 18 runs is not enough to cover up the fact that he's rubbish with the bat and his keeping was far from perfect. He should never have been selected, you're right, because he ruined the whole composition of the team. Majority of PP'ers were selecting U Akmal or Shafiq to keep in their playing XI's, just goes to show the faith in him. Saying his contribution was the same as YK's or Hafeez's is an insult to those cricketers. You're giving him way too much credit. This is akin to U Akmal staying at the crease in the victory against England. I'm glad he did it, but ffs he just scored 16 runs.

His selection for the Test series in England was a bit out of the blue as well, Sarfraz Ahmed has been our backup keeper for years and suddenly he was dropped. Why does no one cry out about the match fixing mafia against him? Zoni did nothing on the domestic scene to warrant a selection.

oh and if anyone thinks I'm being insensitive, cancer & losing someone to it is a matter close to my heart. In this instance, it should have no bearing on Zoni and his actions.

You can wait to judge him, fine, but I think you've already made your call on him.

You can wait to judge him, fine, but I think you've already made your call on him.
I can easily change my mind on Zulqarnain.

All I know is corruption is an inherent part of Pakistani society. And history has shown, our cricket has also been corrupt. So odds are, it is still corrupt. Old habits die hard.

Someone who is thinking along the same lines as me. The guy has quite a few chips on his shoulders. And while the english media is taking its bite, a whole chunk will be bitten off by NOTW soon. He has already given the interview to the tabloid (insists he didn't take money lol), and I think it's either going to be this sunday or the next at the latest when even Zoni himself is going to start realizing just what exactly he has done.

Zulqarnain is as stupid as Yasir Hameed’

KARACHI: It was ‘sheer stupidity’ that forced Zulqarnain Haider to abandon the Pakistan team in Dubai, a senior teammate of the young wicketkeeper told ‘The News’ on Friday.
The Pakistan team player, who was speaking on the condition of anonymity, compared Zulqarnain with Yasir Hameed — another national cricketer who was involved in a major controversy last summer — saying that both of them don’t have the ‘brains required to play international cricket’.
“By the time this issue is resolved, people would be saying that Zulqarnain has committed an act of stupidity similar to what Yasir Hameed did a few months back,” said the player. “Both Zulqarnain and Yasir are similar characters. They lack the brains required to play international cricket,” he added.
Last September, Yasir Hameed allegedly told a British tabloid that many of his teammates were involved in match-fixing. The Test batsman later denied it but only after his interview added fire to a spot-fixing scandal involving three leading Pakistan cricketers — Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir.
Zulqarnain, 24, fled to London on Monday morning just hours before Pakistan were scheduled to play their ODI series decider against South Africa in Dubai. The wicketkeeper said that he took this extreme step after receiving death threats from match-fixers.
“If I or anybody else in the team will receive any threats, we will just go to the team management and tell them about it,” said the player. “That’s what any reasonable person would do. But Zulqarnain acted in an insane manner by running away from the team.”
There have been several conspiracy theories since Zulqarnain escaped from the team hotel and later surfaced in London.
Some suggest that the player did talk about the threats with some of his colleagues but decided to flee after failing to get any support from them.
“It’s ridiculous to suggest anything like it,” said the senior player. “I can say for sure that he didn’t tell anybody in the team about it. He didn’t even go to Abdul Razzaq with whom he has played at the club level in Lahore. Zulqarnain is quite close to Razzaq could have confided in him but he didn’t.”
Recent reports have claimed that the team management had decided to drop Zulqarnain before the fifth One-day International, suggesting that the move could have prompted the player to flee from Dubai.
“It doesn’t make any sense,” said the senior player. “I mean you cannot drop a player who has just won you a close match,” he added referring to Zulqarnain’s match-winning cameo — an unbeaten 19 — in the fourth ODI against South Africa that helped Pakistan to level the series 2-2. “According to my information, Zulqarnain was very much a part of the playing eleven for the final match and was later replaced by Umar Akmal as the team’s wicketkeeper because of his own decision to run away.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has finally managed to get in touch with Zulqarnain.
Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, spoke with the player on Thursday. He also called up Wajid Shamsul Hasan, Pakistan’s high commissioner to Britain. Hasan had earlier met with Zulqarnain in London.
Television reports claimed that Butt assured Zulqarnain of PCB’s full support but sources said that the chairman just wanted to listen to his side of the story.
Sources told ‘The News’ that senior PCB officials remain skeptical about Zulqarnain’s motives.
Taffazul Rizvi, the PCB’s legal advisor, asked why Zulqarnain waited until Monday before deciding to flee, four days after the alleged threat was delivered.
“In our culture, when are you worried about your family’s safety, you run to their side,” Taffazul was quoted as saying by the Daily Telegraph. “Whereas he has run to a different country,” he added.

yet again another retarded article from a keyboard warrior. He's basically equating honesty with stupidity...good going
Its just the type of message we wanna send to our youth

There has been no support for Zoni, no one has said that we should hear his part of the story too. Tells us about the culture of our cricket team and the management.

I guess most people making money from match fixing would think Zoni is stupid.

I do not think Zoni is stupid, yes Yasir we can say, but not Zoni. The steps he took were well calculated (hope it will work out for him). We all knew on merit as a wicketkeep Sarfaraz, Bismillah, Ahmad Said, many others may not be far behind Zoni, and looking at age factor, some of them may step in soon.

On batting ground, Akmal is much superior to Zoni, so again Zoni chances were not so bright. He got lucky to be called in to ENgland and then match fixing saga plus good inning in England (remind you Saeed Ajmal and Gul played good knocks too but does not mean they are playing it again and again) helped him selected for UAE tour.

So he knew very well his limitations and future prospects, so he took a calculated step to secure a good future for himself and his family. GOODLUCK

Wahabiism at its best, they should just stick to suicidal bombings rather than misguiding their naive countrymen.

Main thing is that Zulqarnain first thought of himself then his family.

Simple as that.

Guy remembered his family when he boarded the plane.

Zulqui certainly beats yasir in stupidity. Yasir was just a loose mouth after a few glasses of wine.

Good to see the Pakistan players rally to help each other in times of need.

Might I add that for a person who claims to not have much money, he seems to be on a shopping spree in London with regards to his clothes.

I am not sure if this was the appropriate thread (probably not) but I will put it here, and in that big Zulqarnain Haider thread. didnt want to start a new one just for these pictures.

:110: Somebody teach him English in his brief stay in England.

Secondly, kick him out of Pakistan and throw him on some small Island so he c an learn survival skills and not be such a darpok.

i doubt thats him.
Pakistani players and social networking dont go together.
