The Zulqarnain Haider Story

Zulqernain's recent satatements.
"Afridi should worry about his performances instead of commenting on me"

On wasim akram
"Wasim akram should not comment on me since he himself was accused of match fixing"(that comment did not make anysesne... oh well...)
Saw it on dunya news.

Well he is right about both statements

LOL @ Salman Butt, that actually made me laugh. +1.

I'm starting to feel sorry for Zoni, he's made a massive ass of himself. What he said about Afridi's performance is correct, but that has no bearing on Zoni and the decisions he's made.

Spot on about Wasim though, we all know something was up with him, just not what.

very tough one to judge without knowing ALL of the facts and what exactly happened. I think Zoni doesn't want to drag others into it. But after everything that went off in Australia, England and now Dubai.... things are not what they seem. The fans are the ones being robbed here.

From the information we do have, I think Zoni's decision was the wrong one...but then i have never had my family and my life threatened. I do beleive part of his story though and i do feel that there is corruption in our cricket. This need to be wiped out. And I just can't accept tht Kamran Akmal has never been approached or even under the influence of these shady figures... maybe that's why he was "rested" for this series.

Salman Butt and Wasim need not comment on this situation unless it's to admit their previous guilt.

The only way I see this ending with Zulqarnain being a hero amongst fans and the Pakistan public is if he gives info on all suspiscous players AND chooses not to stay in the U.K i.e does not seek asylum after spilling whatever beans he has to spill.

Both seem very unlikely, I think it's gonna end with him not really saying much about anyone and going back to Pakistan, probably not playing again and this whole ordeal will convince more people that the sport has gone bad in Pakistan.

I do see the ICC giving him an ear though, sooner or later. I mean, they were desperate enough to go to Veena Maliks house looking for dirt on Asif !

Zoni just seems very bitter. :zoni

Well he is right about both statements

He is not.

One of those is the captain of the team he left in dire straits by running away. Of course it was immature and childish of Zoni to simply run away without informing anyone.

What Afridi has done or is currently doing as a player is in no way related to Zoni's idiotic behaviour. Whatever the problem was (if there ever was), he should have discussed with the captain, coach, management, anyone in the PCB, ICC, ACU. Heck, anyone rather than leave a stupid message on Facebook "announcing" his decision.

Of course it was childish of him to let the world know about where he was and what he was doing before any of his team did and all that on the morning of an all important series decider.

Of his comments on Wasim Akram- again, nothing that Akram did in his cricketing career has any bearing on Zoni's case.

Both Afridi and Akram have commented on Zoni's behaviour and most would agree it was an immature way to deal with things. Instead of explaining his actions, what does Zoni do? Well, he passes comments on the cricketing careers of Afridi and Akram. Way to go (so called) whistle blower!

Copying from another thread because AZ closed it before I could comment, but didn't merge it here:

Salman Butt on Zulqarnain Haider

In the meantime, his brother remains five thousand miles away, contemplating his future and fielding calls from his distressed wife, Qurutul Ain, who has already publicly appealed for him to come home to Pakistan.

If he does so, though, he is unlikely to get a friendly reception should he return for a few practice sessions at the nets of the Model Town cricket ground.

Among the other famous alumni practising at the ground last week was none other than Salman Butt, the former Pakistan captain who is currently one of the three players under investigation.

Asked to comment on the Haider case, he had only this to say.

"He has no friends."

This from the guy you can no longer pay people to defend. I think Zulq should pull a Musharraf and say "Check out my Facebook page, yo."

Okay. Everyone knows I am not a Salman But fan. But this! :)))

I read this whole article. What a melodramatic piece. This writer needs to quit journalism and start writing scripts for B grade hollywood movies.

"He has no friends."

I'm sure that after uttering just these 4 words, no more no less, Salman let out a puff of smoke of his cigar, gave one last piercing glance from under the shade of his mobster hat to the bespectacled reporter, flicked the cigar ash on the reporter's shoe, turned around, got in his BMW and drove into the sunset.

The Godfather soudtrack would do wonders in the background.

Ridiculous! :)))

Zulqarnain Haider strikes back.

Haider is making sure , even if he get back to Pakistan , he will never represent Pakistan again ... well dude , you are not here to justify for them ... clarify yourself the stunt you have pulled out ... anyways ... your story is going low now .... soon you will be history

so a man keep insulting Imran khan,Wasim akram,Shahid afridi and still we have some people who are thinking imaginary stuff...could have this happened?,might have that happened?

He's only insulting them, because they're insulting him :))

They're not insulting him. They've described his actions as immature and thoroughly unwarranted.

If he thinks his response was mature and warranted, he needs to speak up and explain. Name calling will not do him any good.

Name calling?
Where has he called someone something?
Just asking, because I haven't heard anything about him calling anyone anything.

Effectively called Afridi and Akram and failure and a match fixer (respectively) in those two comments.

Technically, he didn't say it-
He implied it.. in a way :P

Point is, them both and everyone else hasn't criticized Zoni unfairly.

What he did was totally foolish and must I say, very selfish. He is yet to explain why he fled away on the morning of a very important series decider. Unless Zoni speaks up and lets everyone know why he did what he did, he is going to keep earning a lot of flak.

I haven't said that he's been criticized unfairly. I'm just saying that he's replied back to what they've said in a way which he might think is right.
People have different points of views. Some people might think he did the right thing and others will think he's done the wrong thing. That's how the world works. But we just need to wait until he does speak up.

IMO, Haider's response to what people around - Afridi, Akram and Imran included - are saying is simply wrong. He cannot just come up with lame responses as he's done.

If he thinks there's something wrong within the Pakistan cricket set up, he needs to bring it up for the world to know why he did, what he did. If he can't do that, because of whatever reasons, he needs to simply keep quiet till the time he feels it is "safe" enough for him to "reveal" it all.

Yes I agree with that, but the responses he came up with were quite funny, IMO. :zoni

He even hit Imran Khan for his statement , that he have played cricket for years & couple of prayers have played under him .. he never got any threat .....

on that note

Zoni Replies

Those who are saying ....they should know Cricket was different back then ?

after playing 1 test match ... he have better knowledge of things than Imran Khan

I seriously question his IQ level

fixing problem is not new .. someone should update this kid .... it was long back ago when it all started ... Imran exactly know what that means

^^

Exactly. All those retorts of his just prove him to be what :inti calls them all. Idiot!

And this is what the above scene will merge with -

[UTUBE]TWucYbAp8Lk[/UTUBE]

As another MJ projected - this would probably be the "betting Mafia" where criminals, businessmen and sportsmen all alike gather - "Annie" is of course, a codename for Zulqernain. And Club 30s is the biggest "adda" of all the betting syndicates and whatnot. The curly-haired, white-suited guy is the "bookie" who wants to kill "Annie urf Zoni"...

And not-so-surprisingly, Annie(Zoni) is so clueless s/he doesn't even know if they're okay or not so yeah..

Here is an article by Abdul Majid Bhatti on Zulqarnain Haider

I really think this deserves a thread of its own, Osman Samiuddin really hits the nail on its head with this one. A very thorough analysis but I will leave that decision upto the mods who would know the best to do with it :)

The curious case of Zulqarnain Haider

A confession: over a week on, little of the curious case of Zulqarnain Haider makes sense to me. Certainly nothing in it makes the kind of sense that much of the British press has made of it. In that simplified, romanticised narrative he is already the sole knight raging against the darkness that engulfs all of Pakistan. It's no fun - and probably not very healthy - to be the cynic, but with more questions than answers at this stage, I cannot buy into this so readily.

Is he really cricket's latest whistleblower? As I last understood the job description, whistleblowers reveal the rottenness of an entity they are a part of, usually at great cost to themselves. Rashid Latif outed several people in his own side in the mid-90s, including the captain. He was a whistleblower.

So far Zulqarnain has outed an Asian man who speaks a little Urdu. To the ACSU: good luck finding him in Dubai, short of neither Asians nor Urdu-speakers. ESPNcricinfo understands the ACSU has not been told a great deal more so far than what Haider has publicly said. This is not whistleblowing yet; this is finding an incredibly convoluted way of reporting an approach by a suspect personality.

The other revelation is concerning a domestic 50-over game from March 2009, and it isn't much of a revelation. Haider was dumped as captain of Lahore Eagles ahead of the game, against National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), because, he says, he refused to pick players imposed upon him. The scorecard has a bizarre, men-against-children look to it. Two players who played for the Eagles hadn't played before and have not played since; one of them conceded 78 runs in three overs. As part of the narrative, this game is thus fixed, Haider faced threats then as he did now and so domestic cricket in Pakistan is crooked; moreover an NBP side with Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Kamran Akmal is a fine bit of clinching evidence.

Why let the truth get in the way of a good yarn, eh? One of the players selected was no cricketer but no fixer either; his father is a local Lahore administrator who desperately wanted his son to play a representative game. It is the kind of forced selection that the subcontinent's domestic- and junior-level cricket is littered with. It is a problem, but of a different type entirely.

The Eagles, incidentally, are the poor cousins of Lahore, the second-string team in which play the second-string talent of the city. They had lost three games fairly convincingly before this one. Above all, the match wasn't even televised, and TV we know, is the oxygen of bookie-dom.

With these kinds of exposés Haider is simply an asylum-seeker, not a whistleblower.

And much else besides should be questioned. Why did he leave updates on Facebook for all to see? And go to a TV reporter first instead of approaching the PCB or the ACSU? That, I find difficult to dispute, says more about Haider than it does about either the PCB or ACSU. The PCB is inept, incompetent, disgraceful, but to assume they may be in cahoots with the underworld is still a considerable leap. And Tim May's argument that the ACSU cannot be trusted to keep secrets is irrelevant here at best. The one thing that is blindingly clear is that Haider is not a man looking for anonymity.

To swat the story away, as some have, on the basis that Haider is no player of significance is to be blind. He was the wicketkeeper, a position Pakistan should know only too well, is uniquely capable of affecting the course of entire matches

Nor did he approach anyone in the team. It's been easy to forget over the last few months that there remain characters in and around Pakistan cricket untainted by such muck; could not even one, such as Younis Khan, or Abdul Razzaq be spoken to in confidence? Haider says he wanted to protect the team by not telling them. And telling the rest of the world instead protects his teammates how?

Why wait four days and play one game before leaving? Why go to the UK and leave your family in the hands of Lahore police, which as every citizen of that beautiful city knows is in no hands at all? These questions are not to dismiss him or his deeds. These are logical questions that must be asked of a man who has taken a grave step.

Indeed, there is no need to be as dismissive and vindictive as some of the reactions from the rumpus that passes for a cricket fraternity here.

The approach itself is as believable as not. Who would still approach a side under such scrutiny? Or is it simply that the hooks are in that deep? But to swat it away as some have on the basis that Haider is no player of significance is to be blind. He was the wicketkeeper, a position Pakistan should know only too well, is uniquely capable of affecting the course of entire matches. Approaching a wicketkeeper, in fact, makes immense sense. Calling into question his mental health, as the team manager has done, is in outright bad taste.

What little I saw of Haider as a cricketer I liked. He isn't a great wicketkeeper - and the bar has been set remarkably low by Kamran Akmal - but clearly there is something in him that functional teams should like; a little fight, a little heart, something that equates to more than just the parts.

But a significant part of me looks at how energetically he hunts for media attention (and how much of it he has already attracted in a short career) and then to this episode, and does so with real worry and suspicion that none of it may be of any real consequence. Another smaller part can't help but worry why else someone would give up a budding career as an international cricketer if not because of something very serious and disturbing, something of immeasurably greater consequence.

The lack of any real resolution between those parts is the real frustration of the last week.

Excellent piece by OS but reading the comments from fans seems most don't like it. Despite the fact Haider has so far revealed almost nothing of value concerning the match-fixing in Pakistan people seem to regard him as some sort of hero. All I see so far is insinuation and vague innuendo backed up with very little real evidence. Hopefully there's more to come (eventually) otherwise it's a helluva a cheap visa stunt.

:14:

OS outclassed himself with this! Brilliant piece of work indeed!

Sorry, I was busy with family so jjust read it now..

Something I found:

ABU DHABI: A three-man fact finding committee investigating Pakistan’s run-away retired wicket-keeper Zulqarnain Haider has penned down several conflicting statements that could detract him from seeking asylum in the UK.

The committee has nearly compiled its internal report which will be handed over to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), but has been delayed as it is currently waiting for information from the UAE immigration officials that have been off due to Eid holidays.

Haider fled before the fifth One-Day International against South Africa to the UK after claiming to have death threats from illegal bookmakers. The 24-year-old has now applied for temporary asylum in the UK, claiming fears for his and family’s safety.

One of the committee members, while talking to The Express Tribune, hinted that Haider had conflicting statements about his brief meeting with the man whom he claimed offered him money and threatened him. The official said that the statements Haider gave at the Heathrow airport contradict the ones he made when he met the committee.

The PCB has already suspended Haider for abandoning the tour as it violated the board’s terms and conditions which he signed before leaving for the UAE. But the committee has refused to reveal any information but has intimated a bleak future for the player and believed that the finding report will be made public. The report will be submitted next week before Friday.

His msn status was yesterday that he will be in Islamabad soon. Not sure how old that was though. Anyway he was online yesterday

Seriously? :))

Would be funny if he flies away from England without informing anyone about it.

Interesting.. he's shaping up to be a very weird fellow. Who lets their fans onto their personal social lists?

somebody who is very weird, obviously. And somebody who craves attention.

I think the guy needs serious help. I'm not sure if he is all 'with it', to be honest with you. Nothing he did were the actions of a rational person.

Girls mature more quickly than boys. Even a 13-year old girl would be miles ahead in terms of logical thinking, IQ and common sense compared to Zoni's antics :P

Zulqanain to reveal secrets on match-fixing soon

LONDON: Pakistan wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider has said that he would reveal secrets regarding match-fixing and spot-fixing allegations within five or six days, Geo News reported.

He said that he would expose those talking against him in the next five or six days and reveal who has taken money and from whom.

According to sources, he wrote this on his facebook account.

It may be mentioned that Zulqarnain went missing during Pak-SA series in UAE on grounds of life-threats and later he contacted media persons after arriving in UK.

After all the controversies had haunted Zulqarnain, his lawyer advised him not to talk to media but despite that, he left above-discussed message on his facebook account.
