Hungary player Barnabas Varga stable in hospital after injury in match against Scotland

Hungary player Barnabas Varga is stable in hospital after he was stretchered off the pitch in the country's Euro 2024 match against Scotland.

The Hungary forward went down in the second half after an apparent clash with Scotland's goalkeeper Angus Gunn following a free kick.

Hungary players quickly signalled Varga was in trouble and were incensed by the time the medical teams were taking to get over to help treat the player.

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, the Hungarian captain, was in tears as medical staff responded to his teammate, according to TV commentary of the game.

The Hungary team formed a shield around Varga while he received treatment and TV cameras panned away.

The game was held up as Varga required lengthy treatment.

After several minutes, Varga was eventually taken away on a stretcher as both sets of fans applauded.

He has since been taken to hospital, where he is said to be stable.

A statement from the Hungarian Football Federation read: "Barnabas Varga's condition is stable. The Ferencvaros player is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart. We will inform you immediately if there is any news about his status."

Hungary head coach Marco Rossi later added Varga would be "okay" but may need an operation on his cheekbone.

A VAR check for a possible penalty after the injury came to nothing.

Scotland were later knocked out of Euro 2024 after losing the match 1-0 to Hungary thanks to a late goal in added time.

Dominik Szoboszlai demands UEFA changes protocols after sickening Barnabas Varga injury

Dominik Szoboszlai has slammed the slow response from medical staff after his teammate Barnabas Varga suffered a grave injury during Hungary's Euro 2024 win over Scotland.

Varga was involved in a horrific collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn, which left the 29-year-old Hungarian lying motionless in the penalty area.

Both sets of players immediately gestured for medical attention and then held up sheets to shield Varga from view as he was tended to and stretchered off by medics, with the game being paused for around seven minutes.

The striker is now in a stable condition and Hungary manager Marco Rossi has confirmed he will need surgery for a facial fracture and will miss the remainder of Euro 2024.

But Hungary captain and Liverpool midfielder Szoboszlai was not satisfied with the way the incident was dealt with.

Medical staff were seen walking toward the injured player after the collision and he specifically criticised the delay in response time

"He’s okay, he’s in hospital," he said after the game.

"He needs some surgery on his face and nose but, yeah, he’s going to have the surgery tomorrow.

"It looked bad, it was bad, he felt bad.

"I don’t really know what the protocol is. I don’t know how it works but if our doctor says we need (to go on) immediately to someone to help, then I don’t think they should walk.

"It’s not my decision but I think we need to change something that even if somebody is on the ground and you see that it was a big crash then just go in, even if the referee is saying don’t come in. Just go in.

‘"And if you see that it’s nothing serious, then you can just go down and it’s finished.

"But seconds can help a lot."

Fans have echoed his criticism on social media with some specifically asking why provisions were not better given that Christian Eriksen suffered a life-threatening cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.

One wrote: "Its weird that after 2021 there does not seem to be a protocol for these urgent medical emergencies….the fact that szoboszlai had to pull the stretcher on the pitch himself is absolutely insane."

Another added: "Sincerely, sincerely wish Barnabás Varga a full and safe recovery. His teammates were brilliant in detecting he needed treatment straight away but the slowness of the medical team to get on the pitch was so concerning. Safety and welfare of the players should be highest priority."

Euro 2024: UEFA says 'no delay' in treating injured Hungary player Barnabas Varga after criticism

UEFA has defended the length of time it took for medical staff to treat Hungary's Barnabas Varga after he suffered a serious head injury in his side's Euro 2024 match with Scotland.

UEFA said: "We would like to clarify that the intervention of the team doctor happened within 15 seconds of the incident, followed immediately by the second stadium doctor, to conduct a first assessment of the injury and provide appropriate treatment, as per customary medical procedures.

"The qualified pitchside emergency team were waiting pitchside, according to their protocol, and arrived with the stretcher as soon as their intervention was requested by the medics to evacuate the player for his immediate transfer to hospital.

"The coordination between all the medical staff on site was professional and everything was done in accordance with the applicable medical procedures.

"There was no delay in the treatment of and assistance to the player."

Spain maintained their 100% record at Euro 2024 as they defeated and eliminated Albania – a result that meant England, France and the Netherlands all secured last-16 places.

Former Manchester City forward Ferran Torres, now at Barcelona, gave a much-changed Spain side the lead in the 13th minute, finishing low first time from Dani Olmo's pass with the ball bouncing in off the post.

Kristjan Asllani's powerful 25-yard strike for Albania drew a fine save from Spain goalkeeper David Raya, who spent last season at Arsenal on loan from Brentford.

Raya also did well to keep out Fulham striker Armando Broja's shot on the turn, as Albania could not find an equaliser and finished bottom of Group B.

Mattia Zaccagni scored in the final minute of stoppage time as Italy broke Croatia’s hearts with a late equaliser that ensures the defending champions progress to the last 16 of Euro 2024.

Luka Modric had thought he had won it for his side to send them through as runners-up in Group B when he slammed a shot into the roof of the net early in the second half.

That came after he had seen a penalty saved, but the swift response to that setback looked like it would be enough for the Croatians.

But Italy levelled in stoppage time when Zaccagni curled home in the 98th minute to ensure they go through with group winners Spain.

It was a cruel blow for Croatia, who had been minutes away from progressing but two points is now unlikely to be enough to finish as one of the best third-placed teams.

@aboveandbeyond - told you this Dutch side was average. Currently being out played by Austria. Also didn't look that good in 1st two group games either. When your best attackers are gapko and depay, you know a team is weak

France have been awful again today, if they fail to win here and finish 2nd, they will end up in same half of draw as Germany, Spain, Portugal.

Lewandawski misses penalty, then retaken and scores 1-1

Sabitzer with a brilliant goal.

3-2 ahead

What a game

Very enjoyable month of sport ! T20 World Cup and Euros have really delivered.

Austria win the group.

France now in tough side of Draw. Portugal possibly in 1/4 finals

England if they win their group could end up playing the dutch

Austria produced a hugely impressive performance that will make others take notice at Euro 2024 as they beat the Netherlands to progress to the last 16 as Group D winners.

Despite being handed a tough draw with the Dutch and France, Ralf Rangnick’s side won two of their three games to go finish top of the standings.

The Netherlands had already guaranteed their progression to the last 16 but they will now go through as one of the best third-placed sides, with France second.

This was a fully deserved win for Austria as they played with spirit and desire throughout, and showed great determination to respond to a fast start to the second-half by the Netherlands as Marcel Sabitzer's strike secured the victory.

The Austrians had been gifted a sixth-minute lead when Donyell Malen turned home Alexander Prass’s dangerous cross.

And, although Malen had a chance at redemption but scuffed his shot, Austria took control as the Netherlands struggled to get a touch of the ball at times.

Rangnick’s side had chances to add to their lead through Sabitzer and Marko Arnautovic, but the Netherlands were level just 75 seconds into the second half.

The Dutch came out fighting in the second half and equalised when Cody Gakpo curled in a great finish.

That prompted a shift in tempo and Austria were holding on as Virgil van Dijk’s header deflected over the bar.

But Austria weathered the storm and retook the lead through Romano Schmid’s powerful header, which the unfortunate Stefan de Vrij could only help over the line.

Memphis Depay thought he had earned the Dutch a draw when his close-range volley survived a check for handball by the video assistant referee, but Sabitzer had the final say when he broke through and drove into the roof of the net to send the Austrian fans wild.

According to UEFA, Cristiano Ronaldo recorded his fastest top speed in the Euros at 32.7 km/h in 2024, aged 39 ⚡

That's his highest recorded top speed in the tournament since they started tracking this stat in 2012 😯

The man cannot be human 🐐

A masked Kylian Mbappe scored his first Euros goal but France were held to a draw by an already-eliminated Poland to finish second in Group D.

France needed all three points in order to seal top spot, but Robert Lewandowski's 79th-minute penalty cancelled out Mbappe’s spot-kick 11 minutes into the second half.

Ralf Rangnick's Austria produced a fantastic display to beat the Netherlands 3-2 to top the group, while the Dutch took third place.

After finishing second, Didier Deschamps' side will face the runner-up in Group E.

Having returned to the starting line-up following a broken nose, Mbappe ended his wait for a first goal at a European Championship with the opener.

Ousmane Dembele was brought down in the area by Poland and Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior and Mbappe made no mistake from the spot.

But France took their foot off the gas and a clumsy challenge from Dayot Upamecano gifted Lewandowski a golden opportunity to respond with a spot-kick of his own.

Mike Maignan thought he was the French hero after saving Lewandowski's effort but the goalkeeper had encroached off his line and the penalty had to be retaken.

The Poland captain slotted into the corner to score for a fourth European Championships.

Kind of absurd that if a team finishing at the last of 3rd place table goes on to win the Euros , for instance Ned or Cro

Portugal won it in 2016, they scraped 3rd in their group and didn't even win a group game.

Winners will come from the Spain, Germany, Portugal, France side of the draw.

If you can’t get the kids to bed , put on the England game on for them .

This team of Southgate is clueless atm
Simply awful, almost as bad as Scotland.

Scotland have zero quality. This England team have a clown manager

Denmark 0-0 Serbia - MATCH REPORT

Serbia failed to put up a fight as they were knocked out of Euro 2024 following a draw which saw Denmark progress.

Neither side produced a performance that reflected their potential, but Denmark were the better team in a forgettable encounter in Munich.

Jonas Wind had a goal disallowed for Denmark in the first half because the ball had gone out of play before he bundled it over the line from a corner.

The Wolfsburg forward also slipped as he tried to connect with a smart flick-on from Rasmus Hojlund, slicing over the bar from a good position, and was substituted at the break.

Denmark continued to create chances despite a poor display by their standards. Alexander Bah headed wide and Christian Eriksen's shot had to be parried behind for a corner.

Serbia, who knew they would be eliminated if they did not win because of Slovenia's stalemate with England in the other Group C match, had just one shot on target that came in second-half stoppage time.

They did have a goal ruled out when Luka Jovic's shot bounced in off Denmark defender Joachim Anderson in the second half - but the striker was offside in the build-up.

Knowing their place in the last 16 was secure with a draw, Denmark lacked ruthlessness. Although Jannik Vestergaard headed a corner delivery at Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic, they rarely tested him throughout the second half.

England should sack Southgate before Sundays knockout game

England 0-0 Slovenia - MATCH REPORT

England moved into Euro 2024’s last 16 at the top of Group C - but it was only achieved after another drab display with a draw against Slovenia in Cologne.

Gareth Southgate’s side offered up slightly more than in the abysmal performance against Denmark but once again it was nowhere good enough to justify England’s status as pre-tournament favourites.

England were laboured and only showed quality in flashes, namely in the first half when a slick passing moved ended with Bukayo Saka’s goal being ruled out for offside.

Conor Gallagher failed to justify his inclusion and was replaced at half-time, with the introduction of Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo providing more urgency after the break.

England were also short on creativity in a group where no team scored more than one goal for the first time in the competition’s history.

It was a good night in other respects for England, with results elsewhere meaning the dangerous quartet of France, Spain, Germany and Portugal have dropped into the other side of the draw.

England's last 16 opponents are currently the Netherlands - but that could change after the final round of matches.

Rice is a major issue for England. He's basically a cart horse. A mainoo and Wharton double pivot is the way forward.

England are appearing average and toothless at the moment. Germany and Spain are looking like the most threatening sides at the moment. Form will go out the window once we reach the last 16 stage. Belgium are always good to watch where as the holders Italy like always are boring us to tears with their negativity.

Southgate is such a clueless coach

One of the worst 90 mins of football I have seen in recent times. How did England FA keep him for 8 years.

🤣 Rice is a major issue?

The entire England team was poor saka, foden, kane, Gallagher etc.. your singling out Rice?

France have been just as poor as well.

Jude Bellingham for England vs. Slovenia:

▫️ 0 shots
▫️ 0 chances created
▫️ 0 successful tackles
▫️ 0 passes completed into attacking third
▫️ 12% of his passes went forward
▫️ 22% duels won (worst on team)
▫️ 16 times possession lost (most on team)

He's got just one shot and one chance created through THREE matches at the Euros.

I Agree with your points. But I've been consistent with England, the players are over hyped.

As for Rice, he's playing as the 8, that is key position in the team. It dictates everything, and I'm afraid Mainoo has a far superior cieling to Rice as the 8. For this reason cart horse (rice) should go back to water carrying duty at 6

Either bench him or bench kane

I did post here the Dutch gave had injuries in key areas. Frankie de jong is a key and critical loss.
1 player doesn't make a team.

This is one of the weakest Dutch sides I've ever seen and I've seen one of their best sides in 1998

Gapko is an awful player, depay not much better.

Resorting to long balls to super sub weghorst is pure desperation.

Trent is a CM
Trippier isn't a LB

Bellingham being misused as well.

You telling me if Pep or Ancelotti were in charge here. They would make same mistakes as southgate?

What games are you watch bro?

Ride has played the 6 role in all 3 games, the 1st two games he was in a double pivot with TAA

Even yesterday with Gallagher, Rice was the number 6.

So this he's not good enough in 8 makes zero sense, when he's not been used in that position for England.

Yes Mainoo was excellent when he came on, both him and Palmer should start the next game.

It's a fluid system. Players are interchanging during games. Whilst I so believe Southgate is ltd, but surely it's on the likes of Bellingham, foden, Kane who can't create chances against Slovenia,Denmark, and the Serbs! The players are just as responsible

England's media always throw the manager under the bus. Happened with Capello, and now with Southgate

Bellingham's best position is when he is a hybrid of 8 and 10, when he gets involved in the attack from deep position with his runs and also his off the ball ability is top notch. He basically played as a second striker in this game because Kane was dropping too deep so this isolated him. They should rather have played Watkins instead of Bellingham if they wanted a similar role.

Two England full backs are absolutely useless in terms of creatively, and England don't have a midfielder that can't pass between the lines forward, create space and time for attacking players. Wharton is an option but Southgate doesn't trust him. Mainoo is not a solution as well.

Harry Kane has been so useless without a proper runner if you aren't starting Gordon then there is no point playing Harry Kane as he is too slow. Best version of Harry Kane when he has played for England whenever a proper runner like Sterling or Rashford started with him. It also allowed Bellingham to thrive in a deeper role

Not picking a proper left back cause immense damage to England balance

Walker is the most overrated right back in the world. He is protected by the creative quality of Manchester city otherwise he is a such dud going forward.

Hungary striker Barnabas Varga released from hospital following horror collision against Scotland

Hungary striker Barnabas Varga has been released from hospital and is recovering at home after breaking bones in his face following a horrific collision in his side’s Euro 2024 clash with Scotland.

Varga was stretchered off during the crunch clash in Stuttgart with the score at 0-0 in the 68th minute of the Group A clash.

The heavy fall, following a challenge with goalkeeper Angus Gunn and defender Anthony Ralston, appeared to leave him unconscious as his teammates immediately called for medical attention.

But the Ferencvaros striker successfully underwent surgery and is now resting back home, according to a statement from the Hungarian FA: “Barnabas Varga was released from the Stuttgart hospital this morning and is currently recovering at home in Hungary.”

Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai had helped him into the recovery position as physios raced onto the pitch to help. Medics then put up a blanket screen around the 29-year-old while they treated him and the stretcher was called for.

Hungary players and manager Marco Rossi then appeared to be furiously screaming at the stretcher carriers for not getting on to the field of play more quickly, while Szoboszlai appeared to be in tears.

Speaking about the incident after the match, Gunn told the BBC: “It was a bit of a blur. I thought I had to come and thought I’d done well. It was a bit painful. Hopefully the guy is all right. I can’t really remember too much about it.”

Varga – who plays his club football in Hungary for Ferencvaros – was stretchered off after a few minutes of treatment, with the relief palpable in the supporters of both sides as they clapped him off.

Hungarian football’s governing body later reported that he was in a stable condition in a Stuttgart hospital. He will require surgery on a broken cheekbone.

A statement from the Hungarian Football Federation read: “Barnabas Varga’s condition is stable. The Ferencvaros player is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart. We will inform you immediately if there is any news about his status.”

And in his post-match press conference, Rossi added further clarity, saying: “I’m not sure if it was a collision with the goalkeeper, it was a confused situation, that’s why the VAR was checking. The players were saying he looked unconscious so everyone was really worried about his condition and worried about the fact that the doctors arrived late, we can say, but they probably didn't realise it was a dangerous situation.

“Thankfully he is not under risk, he will be operated on here (points to cheek). He’s healthy, and that’s the most important thing. If we go through, he is no longer part of the team"

Gunn and Ralston were also treated after the collision although both were able to continue the game for Scotland, while there was also a VAR check for a penalty around the incident but no foul was awarded.

Play resumed after a stoppage of around seven minutes and there were 10 minutes of injury time added on to the end of the match due to the delay.

Hungary ultimately snatched a last-gasp, 100th-minute winner through Kevin Csoboth to send Scotland crashing out of the Euros with a 1-0 defeat, while the Hungarians will have to wait to see if their three points is enough to qualify for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed finishers.

And Scotland captain Andy Robertson was devastated about the result after the final whistle, telling BBC Sport: “It could have gone either way but that’s football - that’s how it goes. It will take a long time to get over this one.

“We had a lot of possession first half without really doing anything with it but we were in control - we controlled the game. We just had to find that cutting edge.

“We knew there was going to be a point in the game where we could go for it. We did go for it but we got sucker-punched at the end. A draw wasn’t going to be enough realistically so both teams had to go for it and unfortunately one of us had to lose.

“Tonight is devastating, there’s no buttering it up. All the lads are absolutely gutted. What I will say is thank you to the country because we felt everyone behind us and we knew the excitement back home and sorry for letting you down.”

The Varga situation brought back memories of the Christian Eriksen incident at the previous Euros, when the Denmark midfielder collapsed on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Eriksen received extensive and immediate medical attention on the pitch in Copenhagen and was taken to hospital soon afterwards – before it was revealed post-match that he had effectively died before being resuscitated.

“He was gone. We did cardiac resuscitation, it was a cardiac arrest,” team doctor Morten Boesen said. “How close were we to losing him? I don’t know, but we got him back after one defib, so that’s quite fast.

Even, I saw Bellingham yelling at a player for not pressing.

Southgate's England are terrible at pressing, it's the same reason for players like stones, rice to stick to their position rather than going forward and tracking back, if they lose possession.

England have, and always will be the most overrated team in world football, the expectation on them is not justified.

It's not coming home, this time too 😂

Never know. The luck of the draw means England will avoid the Traditional super powers until the final.

However, the likes of Nederland, Austria, Switzerland, Italy would fancy their chances this England team

We aren't comparing city and England squads here.

My point was that players in England team should be utilised to their strengths and playing style.

England should be allowing stones to step into midfield like he does for City. Or they should use either Joe gomez or TAA as an inverted full backs, roles both players have been used in.

A midfield of a 6 (rice), an 8 and 10 (foden and Bellingham)

Saka and Gordon / Palmer wide..

This is then using players how they are used at club level. The fact players are being restricted by Southgates nonexistent tactics will make any player look bad.
