Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has backed Muhammad Hafeez in exhorting the cricket authorities to set an example in corruption cases unearthed in their country.

Hafeez has been vocal in demanding a life ban for all such players who are found guilty of corruption in the game. He has also questioned the need to allow batsman, Sharjeel Khan back in the national team after he completed a ban for spot-fixing in the PSL.

Sharjeel had admitted his involvement in spot-fixing while going through the rehab programme of the PCB for players who completed their bans.

“I feel these examples should have been set in the past but this didn’t happen and that is why we have seen such cases on regular basis,” Afridi said,

“I have nothing against anyone but even now if the Board wants to set an example it can do that. Only then can we hope to curtail such cases,” he added.

Umar Akmal is the latest Pakistani player to get caught in a corruption scandal as he faces a 12-month ban and a heavy fine for not reporting a spot-fixing offer made to him apparently at the start of the Pakistan Super League in February.

Afridi who remains a big supporter of Umar and consistently picked him in the national team when he was captain said he was disappointed to see Umar get entangled in a new controversy.

“Umar really needs to look at the company he keeps. He needs to get his priorities sorted out. He is a fine batsman but he can’t keep on carrying like this.”

Afridi said he had always wanted the PCB to have a grooming and education program for Pakistani players.

“Most of the Pakistani players come through without any proper education background and they are prone to falling prey to people who encourage corruption in the game.

“I just feel that the board must have a grooming and education program for these players. I think it is about how well you manage a talent. Umar is one example. But just telling them about the anti-corruption clauses is not enough.”

Umar Akmal bashing season continues.

But justified in my view.

That’s why boom boom is so loved. Speaks a whole lot of sense. Fact is all akmal needs is a few slaps.

I can imagine the education they’d give akmal, fixing is baaaaad. Honestly it should come as common knowledge to these guys you should already know as far as company goes yes fully agree with that.

Junaids you still a fan of this troubled bloke :yk

His issues are bigger than what company he keeps, or priorities being out of whack. He's got mental health issues, needs to work with a therapist

Even then a therapist does not have access to a magic wand. There is no hope of him improving within a timeframe where he could feasibly return to international cricket.

Clear hidden message from Lala. Got to say he’s never been the one that holds back. Unfortunately, juniors own blood put him down the same dirty path. Explains why his “tail-unt” never produced a match winning innings when needed. Go figure.

I'd much rather say that other players should look out if they're in the company of Umar Akmal.

Coming from the same guy that used to hang out with Umar and Shehzad in his playing days. Way to throw your buddy under the bus :sendoff

He hung out with Shehzad, he was not that close with UA. In Fact Afridi has criticized UA in the past many times as well and apparently out of frustration in the T20 2016 WC after the NZ game even humiliated him in the dressing room by calling him a "********"

Afridi also supported him after that instance and even recalled him to the t20 team in 2017. The problem with Afridi is that he was a politician and one of the big reasons for groups in the team. He knows how to use people. Umar and Shehzad were just tools for his own motives. I don't think kissi ka sagha hai yeh. He even criticized the recall of Ahmed Shehzad for the the SRL t20 series

Spoke with Mickey Arthur about Umar Akmal (interview to come), he said that Umar was given too much freedom at the start of his international career and if discipline had been imposed back then, things could have turned out very differently.

How could Mickey Arthur know that?

What was tha story? Why was he angry at UA?

No comment on ahmed Shehzad funnily enough
Maybe it would have been wise to let umer stay on with the qalandar staff and be around the likes of sarfraz, shaheen and akhtar

I don't think Afridi represented Pakistan again after the 2016 T20 World Cup.

He's back tracked on retirement so often that it's hard to keep track :afridi1

you're right though, last played for Pakistan in 2016 wt20. He was a staunch supporter of Umar then.

Mickey's not stupid, he will know the history and background of all these guys he's worked with.
