Umar Akmal versus Virat Kohli

So tell me how many attacks in world cricket are better than an attack comprising of Steyn, Morkel, and Tsotsobe?

Morkel/Steyn - YES, Tsotsobe - are you having a laugh :))

England have a better bowling lineup than SA. That's my point.

Even the very best fail in more innings than they flourish

That's fair enough, but I pointed out the series in SA as that was more like the conditions in with India will face in England. Virat is still a fantastic player to watch, no matter what.

Tsotsobe was one of the best (the best?) bowler during the tour.

check tsotsobes odi record i believe it is better than steyn

how can you talk about a guys record when he has playe 20 odis only. Including 5 matches against minnows and only 1 match vs aus

check his record against pak and ind ...he is not a good test bowler but on the looks of it a very fine odi bowler kinda like bracken.

both are very good Talent and I hope both will be batting superstar for their respective team in future.

Kohli already having very good resume.

2008 U/19 Cricket World Cup

Kohli captained the victorious Indian team at the 2008 U/19 Cricket World Cup held in Malaysia. Batting at number 4, he scored 235 runs in 6 matches at an average of 47, including a century against the West Indies U-19s. He was also commended for making several tactical bowling changes during the tournament.

2009 Emerging Players Tournament

Kohli was instrumental in India's win of the 2009 Emerging Players Tournament in Australia. In the final against South Africa, Kohli scored a century and India went on to win the game by 17 runs. Kohli emerged as the leading run scorer of the tournament, aggregating 398 runs from seven matches including two centuries and two fifties.

2011 ICC cricket WC
Member of India's victorious squad...and had a debut WC century as well..:)

umar akmal is so overrrated

he barely has an off side game and hits everything across the line

i don't many people think this, but to me he is very ugly to watch especially thrashing everything on the on side

Watch and learn some cricket boy. You have a long way to go :umarakmal

Watch and learn some cricket boy. You have a long way to go :umarakmal

he is talented and shown promise especially in his first year 2009/10, but still is overrated, people already compare him to legends like tendulkar and viv richards

i don't think his batting is attractive to eye in terms of elegance and he isn't great on the off side either

Umar Akmal's batting role model is Kamran Akmal i read in the sticky thread

umar is light years better than kohli.

had they swapped places and kohli played for pakistan he would be an imran farhat.

So you are saying there so many quality batsmen in Pakistani side that Kohli would be as useless as Farhat.

:yk

Another good knock from Kohli, 2000 runs for him now !

What's clearly visible is that both are different kinda players. UA is the game changer, Virat is the accumulator

Yup, consolidated the inning after Dhawan's early dismissal

That's also true. Roles are well; defined in Indian team and everyone does his job well most of the times. Kohli's role is to stick around and make a lot of runs

Both are exciting players. Only time will tell how they will end up. Probably we can bump the thread after few years when both of them become mainstays of their respective line up (Which U Akmal already is for Pakistan)

81 from 103 balls, and got the motm :14:

Well done kohli, sensibile knock that

Yess, that guy is the lonely shining star in your team. Should definitely bat in top order

Where are the people who used to say that Kohli only shines as he is surrounded by some superb ODI bats like Tendulkar, Sehwag, Gambhir, Yuvraj and Dhoni?

I know its still only 1 game and that too against WI only but tell me, how many of them are in the current team?

Mature Kohli makes all the right moves

Sriram Veera in Port of Spain

June 8, 2011

Virat Kohli comes to meet the press in a sleeveless dress. An image of a Japanese samurai warrior with a sword raised screams out in a tattoo on his left shoulder. He looks relaxed; the musk he is wearing is called confidence. He was once brash but he was always ambitious. For a while he was living on the edge, struggling to come to terms with early fame, but his ambition has roped him in.

It was during an inane tri-series in Bangladesh in January 2010 that he first showed signs of maturity in public. It made you sit up and notice then. These days he wears it lightly. The clarity of thought is striking. He seems to be at peace with himself. It's no coincidence that his cricket too is flourishing.

Today's knock was yet another one from the stable of Kohli. He seemed always under control. The bowling wasn't too testing, the pitch had eased up and he rarely let the opposition into the game. Later, he said the right things. These days he always says the right things with a smile. The confidence hits you. The once brash brat is now almost likeable. Times they are changing.

"I was always determined to do well," Kohli said. "Probably what I was doing off the field was not on at that time. I probably got carried away. Someone or other always tell you that this has been spoken about you at this place. I decided to change. I decided myself. No one can force myself to change. I had to do it. It was time to change.

"I have been given a chance to play for India, which is not a small thing because you have 20 others with same talent are waiting for that kind of a chance. So why waste the opportunity given to me. I got the odd game here and there in 2009. I was a replacement player then. I was very determined to do well at each opportunity."

In the early days, the lack of consistent runs devalued the swagger that he always seemed to have. It made him look arrogant. Brash. Wild. Unlikeable. And even made you forget that he was just a young boy, learning to deal with things that not many at his age are forced to deal with. The bad press accumulated. The bad karma continued. Kohli was living in the headlines for the wrong reasons. A talent was on the verge of self-destruction. Then something happened.

"It's about realising that every opportunity is as important as the next one or previous one," he said. "Not everyone gets an opportunity to play for India. It's a big honour for me. I have realised that massively in the last one and half years. I want to give 100% and make use of every opportunity. Initially, in my ODI career, I have made rash mistakes with my rush of blood at important times. If you keep doing it, you are not going to get the opportunity. I enjoy my batting these days. Especially during a chase I know what I have to do, rotate the strike."

Questions about his attitude have dogged him for a while. Has he got bored now? "I think I have answered that too much," he said with a smile. "But I have enjoyed answering that question every time. I feel good with myself for having changed what people did not like initially and then transform into that performances. I feel good about it but it's not something I want to be too proud of and get relaxed. I don't want to get complacent. The whole point in changing from that kind of attitude to this current attitude to perform consistently. I want to keep going."

It's not going to be easy. It will take a constant vigil over oneself. The danger of relapse is going to be there. But Kohli continues to not only say but also do the right things. Sample this answer to a question about whether he strives to ape a Tendulkar or a Sehwag. In his own mind, he has translated that question to mean whether he is striving to be as famous as them.

"It was never in my mind that I had to be at the level of them in fame or whatever. Those guys have been there, done that. It has taken a lot of time to reach where they are. There is no point in comparing oneself to them. Everyone has their own style of batting. I have realised that in the last one and half years. I admire them but there is no use batting like them. Take the first match of the World Cup. If I had tried to bat like Viru bhai, I would have perhaps ended up scoring 40. They have a special ability that has made them legends of the game. There is no point in doing what is not my strength."

The answers were perfect. The cynics will say they were too perfect. His fans will say they come from a man who is in a hurry to mature. He won't say it publicly but one gets the impression that he thinks he can become India's captain one day. Kohli has always struck you more ambitious than a Rohit or even Raina for that matter. A scribe put it to him that he has a wonderful ability to talk and express, and asked if he works on that skill.

"I don't think I work on that ability (to express myself)," Kohli said. "It's about being honest."

Does he think it's a leadership quality?

"I can't say anything about it being (leadership quality). I am honest in whatever question is thrown at me at every press conference. I don't really work on it."

Virat got up and left the room. Ambition floated in the air.

Those are currently gone underground buddy,Nice way of Virat to answer his critics

good job virat. he still has the occassional brainfart(1st odi) but he is wayyy more effective than not. a great replacement for india when the big dudes retire. i hope he does twice as well in tests too.

Hypothetically if Umar Akmal was playing for India, he wouldve been groomed and prepared to succeed better and if that was the case he would hold a slight edge over Kholi.....

I think we were discussing ODIs here as that all Kohli has played till date. And just check Tsotsobe ODI stats and you'll repent what you just said.

You can't be sure either ways.

So I gather from your post, rest of the 15 are against big teams. And why should it matter that he played only handful of games so far? On the ground it just doesn't matter.

They're now saying that "Lack of superb ODI batsmen around is making Kohli look good" :umarakmal

Kohli's knock yesterday was not mature by any means. Could've been out a few times with some brain/IPL snaps. On another note is it just me or is this series being played exactly like the Pak series? Everyone is so friendly/nice it's like park cricket!

^That's because whenever the situation starts favoring the opposite team, West Indies gives it up too easily. It looks all park cricket after that.

Feel bad for the spectators.

No off side game? You crazy? :ibutt

Watch this and try again.

I am taking this opportunity to congratulate Kohli on reaching 2000 ODI runs. Second fastest to reach 2000 (53 matches). Both Ganguly and Sidhu took 52 matches to reach 2000 (Dont involve Sachin here please)

this was this year prior to that he was and still is predominately a leg side player which most batsmen do favour a particular side

but i don't think he's elegant i think kamran and amin are more elegant than him

he does have talent; quick hands and power, but he thrashes rather than providing silky touch

it just people overhype him and he hasn't won any test games for Pak for e.g. Dunedin 2009/10 and Sydney 2009/10

he averages 14 against Pakistan,8 against England enough said.

how many matches has he palyed against them? a fifty or hundred will change his average. India tours England next month.. he will play well there wait and see...

May be his average against paksitan remains same, as we will not play matches against pakistan.

he hasn't toured Eng or Aus yet we will see when he does.Look at Umar Akmal he has played mostly in different conditions and rather tough.

the sample you took is pretty pathetic.
he played one match vs india and 3 vs pakistan.

i can have the same argument for UA,
UA averages 25 vs england, and 16+ vs india

that's the point,he hasn't played against better sides or in tough conditions more.He has mostly played in Asia compare to Umar akmal who has played more in Aus,NZ and Eng.And don't buy stats, see them as a whole,in tests,ODIs and T20s.When you try to compare two batsmen, you have to keep in mind all factors i.e conditions, oppositions, situations.

Hypothetically if Umar Akmal was playing for India, he wouldve been groomed and prepared to succeed better and if that was the case he would hold a slight edge over Kholi.....

I would agree with this. There are many factors

1) Situtations in which both come in.

Pakistani top and middle order batsmen are generally slow batsmen and by the time Umar comes, its either with his team needing a huge RRR while chasing or while batting first, he needs to speed things up to get a good score. On the other hand all Indian batsmen generally score at a decent rate right from the openers and Kohli can afford to take his time

2) Place in the team

Umar is more or less gauranteed a poistion in the team while Kohli is still uncertain. And with India's depth of batting, any irresponsible shot in one or two matches is enough to gaurantee your exit. So Kohli is autmoatically forced to play carefully

3) Role models

The batting celebrities in India are people like Sachin, Dravid, Dhoni, all of who are masters in playing according to the situation. Once you come into this atmosphere, you are automatically tuned to follow that culture. On the other hand, the more popular Pak players are hitters like Afridi and Razzaq who are always agressive. So a young player would always like to emulate them

before comparing these two we need to realize what roles these two have in the oneday team. Umar akmal is supposed to be a slogger and finisher whereas kohli is an accumulator. Fair comparison?

I think Raina should be compared with Umar

Umar and Kohli have different roles

Kohli and Asad can be compared

2019-wc-ind pak semis-umar captain there, kohli captain here.Until then close the thread

Batting at 6 during the slog overs v batting at 3 .... Is this a fair comparison ?

Sorry for not reading you well.I have highlighted this point many times but some people simply have no cricketing sense at all. Both have different roles both have different jobs.Batting at 3 can be difficult but batting at 6 can be equally difficult because you have no time to settle and block deliveries.you have to increase run rate.I do agree we should keep this point in heads while comparing both.

i am worrying about "cricket" in the first place.excitement is getting lesser and lesser these days

yah , the quality gap in the teams is too much. Some teams are too professional and some very unprofessional. Some are oozing with talent and some lack it. Traditional rivalry b/w pakistan and india is not as good as it was in the past. I hope eng vs ind will again catch the interest of cricker lovers around the world.

you got to score no matter where you play . ppers say Dhoni has a high avg cos he plays lower down the order , why dosent that arguement hold good for Akmal here ...should his record be better than Kohli who plays at no3 then ?

if there are advantages of playing alongside good batsmen , there is also a flip side ...you dont perform , you get chucked out..there is pressure to perform every match , to be consistent . Akaml also gets a lot of opportunites to win matches .... take Rainas case , who has rarely let down our team either playing at 3 or lower down & arguably one of the best finishers in world cricket atm , still had to fight for his place in the WC . Akmal is lucky hes assured of a spot for the next 5 years irrespective of his scores , Kohli doesnt have that luxury !!

wrong example to give, just saying.Dhoni most of times never batted in pressure situations. He always came to bat last 5-10 overs. Our first 4-5 falls down within 30 overs mostly. You could compare him with Yuvraj though.

he averages 14 against Pakistan,8 against England enough said.
Kohli has played just 1 match against England, UA is averaging just 25 from 5 matches.

UA's average against India is just 16

V kohli Still remains a minnow basher.

v Australia 45.50
v England 8.00 (1 match)
v New Zealand 48.40
v Pakistan 14.33 (3 matches)
v South Africa 40.28
v Sri Lanka 40.64
v West Indies 73.66

Kohli averages from 40 against teams against which he has played 5 or more matches. I am sure he is gonna be having high average against England and Pakistan when he plays them enough

Why people have to bring stats to compare these two? Both have started in the past two years, so I think everyone here have seen both of them bat on a lot of occasions in differents formats, in differents positions.

From what I have seen, I will say Umar Akmal is better but Virat Kholi is also good.

If Umar was Indian then even Sachin's selection in the team would be doubtful.

Yeh Kohli Shohli kya cheez hain :umarakmal

as expected, no reply from Indians :yk

Whenever he scores a fifty, this thread get pulled up, they are all hiding today :yk

lol, fair enough. but this is the internet, where it would help to be a bit more obvious.

someone who genuinely didn't know would post exactly what you posted.
