Under-19 Coaches: Rahul Dravid vs... Mansoor Rana

POTW for me. Brilliantly summarized

Wasim was a poor kid who just bowled in the streets for fun. He was so naive about cricket that he asked Miandad how much money he would need to tour NZ. Not realizing that the PCB would pay for his travel expenses and for him to actually play cricket. So what was IK going to teach these kids about the "science" of bowling? He kept them to the basics realizing that raw potential was in this 18-year-old. If you give them too many terms and aspects, they will eventually get confused and lose their previous skills that caught others' attention. This is what happens with ECB as the kids get almost every creative notion of their bowling destroyed or are modeled after the basic manual. Of course, you have the other extreme of not learning anything a la Sami.

Sit these TV experts down and ask them if they will do the U19 head coach job for the money that is being offered and then see how many of them will do the job.

Quality of coach must absolutely be a factor in player development and performance at the youth level. Dravid is one of the most level headed professionals going around, insightful and thoughtful. He also has world class experience to share.

I don't know Mansoor Rana, but there was an interview with the assistant coach Abdur Rehman and he hardly said anything of substance, just things like "Inshallah we will play final".

Abdur Rehman has quite a good reputation on the domestic circuit, though. Regarded as one of the better coaches going around.

Any idea what is the salary?

I would like to hear more about that chat that Miandad had with Wasim.

Abdur Rehman, as far as i know, is basically a morale boosting coach. Someone who pumps you up and stuff. He isn't into technical stuff, something players of that age desperately need.

Yes but the game has moved on, this is not the 80s anymore!

With the standard of competition, fitness standards etc.. it will be ruthless to put a young lad through the paces of International cricket even at junior level without the right amount pf preparation.

That is before we get to other aspects like the attention from the press, social media exposure, bookies, sponsors, league cricket..........

There is no cricket playing teenager in Pakistan today who is as naive as Wasim was once. They know there is money in the game, all kids have a social profile online, there are distractions galore.

U19 coaching is the finishing school before these boys step into Senior level International cricket. It's important that PCB sees the U19 coaching role with the same significance as that of the Senior National squad.
