Maharashtra Woman Demands Wedding Gifts Back, Husband, His Sister Kill Her

The victim, Kalpana Soni, married Mahesh Soni in 2015 and lived with him and her in-laws in Virar.

Mumbai:
A 35-year-old woman in Maharashtra's Palghar was allegedly killed by her husband and sister-in-law for demanding the return of the gifts she received from her in-laws, police said on Sunday.

The victim, Kalpana Soni, married Mahesh Soni in 2015 and lived with him and her in-laws in Virar.

She was allegedly subjected to physical and mental harassment by her in-laws, which often led to arguments, senior police officer Prakash Kawale said.

During a fight on Saturday, she said she would leave the house and demanded the return of her 'stridhan' (movable or immovable assets that a woman receives before, during, or after marriage from parents or in-laws).

Angry with her demand, 38-year-old Mahesh and his sister, Deepali Soni, allegedly attacked Kalpana on the head with a sharp weapon, Kawale said.

Neighbours then rushed her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

The accused reportedly told the police that Kalpana died after a fall in the washroom. However, doctors confirmed that the death was due to severe beatings.

The couple has a 7-year-old daughter, who was not at home at the time of the incident.

A murder case has been filed against Mahesh and Deepali, and they have been remanded in police custody till January 2.

'Want To Remove Thorn': Maharashtra Caste Murder Accused Told Mother

Himesh allegedly fired at Saksham, the bullet piercing his ribs, and then smashed a tile on his head, killing him on the spot.

Nanded:
The mother of 20-year-old Saksham Tate, who was allegedly murdered last week by his girlfriend's family members in Maharashtra's Nanded, on Wednesday alleged that the accused had told her that he was a "thorn" they wanted to remove from their lives.

She also said that the accused had gifted a rose plant having only thorns to Saksham on his birthday.

Saksham was killed on Thursday evening when a fight erupted between him and his girlfriend Aanchal's brother Himesh Mamidwar when he (Saksham) was standing with his friends in the old Ganj area of Nanded, police have said earlier.

Himesh allegedly fired at Saksham, the bullet piercing his ribs, and then smashed a tile on his head, killing him on the spot. Himesh, his brother Sahil (25) and their father Gajanan Mamidwar (45) were arrested soon afterwards, they said. The murder was prima facie a fallout of caste differences between Saksham and Aanchal.

Talking to reporters, Saksham's mother Sangeeta Tate (40) accused Aanchal's father and her brothers of plotting her son's murder.

"Aanchal's family initially pretended to support her relationship with Saksham. Her father had even lifted Saksham on his shoulders during a festival. But later the mood changed. On Saksham's birthday, when friends brought bouquets, Aanchal's family gifted him a rose plant having only thorns," she said.

"They said the plant symbolised their love. Later, Aanchal's brothers told me that they gave him thorns as they wanted to remove the thorn from their lives. And they did it...they killed my son," she said, demanding stringent punishment for the accused.

Saksham's girlfriend Aanchal has earlier alleged that on the day of the murder, her brother Himesh took her to Itwara police station in Nanded in the morning and asked her to file a complaint against her boyfriend, but she refused to do so.

After his murder, Aanchal married his corpse, claiming it would make their love "immortal".

Meanwhile, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar strongly condemned the killing and praised Aanchal for her courage.

In a social media post, he wrote that Saksham, a young Buddhist man, was brutally murdered out of caste hatred by the girl's family. But Aanchal's bold stand deserved full support, he added.

"After Saksham's murder, the girl demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and declared she would marry him even in death. Her courage is extraordinary. We stand firmly with her and with Saksham's family," Ambedkar said.

Republican Sena chief Anandraj Ambedkar said the incident was a wound that no words can heal.

"A young man's dream, life and entire family were destroyed in moments. Aanchal's decision to marry his body reflects not only her love but her refusal to bow before injustice," he said, assuring continued support until justice is delivered.

On Wednesday, VBA leader Anjali Ambedkar visited the grieving Tate family in Nanded, spoke to Aanchal, and promised her support.

Saksham always dreamt of seeing Aanchal become an officer, she said.

"To honour Saksham's dream, the VBA will take full responsibility for Aanchal's education," she assured.

"Live wherever you feel safe, we will arrange everything," Ambedkar told Aanchal.

Man, Spotted Chatting With Girl, Beaten To Death In Maharashtra Village, 4 Arrested

Police suspect an old enmity led to the murder of Suleiman Khan, who was preparing for the police recruitment exam.

Mumbai:
A 20-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by ten persons in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra after they spotted him chatting with a girl, leading to the arrest of four individuals, police said on Wednesday.

Police suspect an old enmity led to the murder of Suleiman Khan, who was preparing for the police recruitment exam.

The four accused were produced before a local court, which remanded them in police custody even as a search for the mastermind of the crime is underway.

Khan, a resident of Betawad Khurd village, had gone to Jamner to fill the form for a police recruitment exam on Monday. He was chatting with a girl in a cafe when ten individuals confronted him and started beating him, a police official said.

The attackers forced Khan to accompany them to his village, where he was assaulted with sticks and iron rods at the bus stand, he said.

When Khan's family members tried to break up the fight, they were also beaten up. Khan was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the official said.

The incident created tension in Jamner, leading to the deployment of a posse of police personnel in sensitive areas.

Khan's relatives and locals gathered at Jamner police station on Monday night, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits and stringent action.

A case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for kidnapping, rioting, and murder.

Professor Stabbed To Death At Mumbai Station. How Cops Caught His Killer

The Malad station murder sent shockwaves through the lakhs of commuters who consider the local railway network Mumbai's "lifeline."

Mumbai:
In a chilling reminder of the volatility within Mumbai's crowded transit system, the Government Railway Police (GRP) have arrested 27-year-old Omkar Shinde for the brutal murder of a college professor at Malad Railway Station.

The victim, Alok Singh, was a professor at a prominent college in Vile Parle. The incident that occurred on Platforms 1 and 2 sent shockwaves through the lakhs of commuters who consider the local railway network the city's "lifeline."

A Fatal Dispute

According to police officials, the violence erupted from a seemingly "minor" argument on Saturday. Both Singh and the accused, Shinde, were traveling on the same local train. As the train approached Malad, a dispute broke out over the protocol of boarding or alighting through the crowded compartment gates -- a daily flashpoint for many Mumbai residents.

The verbal spat soon took a deadly turn. Upon stepping onto the platform, Shinde allegedly lost his cool, brought out a sharp knife, and stabbed Singh multiple times in the abdomen. As Singh collapsed in a pool of blood, the attacker vanished into the station crowd.

Manhunt and Arrest

The Borivali GRP launched an immediate investigation, utilising the station's surveillance network. CCTV footage captured a man in a white shirt and blue jeans fleeing across a Foot Over Bridge (FOB) shortly after the attack.

Using this visual evidence and technical intelligence, the police tracked Shinde to Vasai, where he was arrested.

Unanswered Questions

While the immediate trigger appears to be the "gate dispute," senior officials noted that the sheer brutality of the attack -- stabbing a stranger multiple times over a seating or standing argument -- suggests deeper issues.

"While the argument over getting down from the train is the reported cause, we are investigating if there was any prior enmity or if other factors influenced such a violent outburst," stated a police official.

Singh's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Mumbai Man Gets Wife Killed For Rs 6.7 Lakh After 2 Failed Murder Plots

The man, Sakaram, was having an affair with Dimple Chaudhary and wanted to live with her. To fulfill his desire, he decided to eliminate wife Geeta.

Mumbai:
He was in love, not with his wife, but with another woman. He wanted to live with her, but his wife kept appearing as an "obstacle" to their union. To cross the hurdle, he decided to eliminate her. He had her killed for Rs 6.7 lakh and passed it off as a case of suicide, until a year and a half later, the police unearthed the sinister conspiracy. This is the story of Sakaram from Mumbai, who turned out to be his wife's murderer.

Suicide On Paper

The story dates back to October 14, 2024, when the police were informed about a woman found hanging from a ceiling fan in a kitchen. The woman was identified as 34-year-old Narangi, alias Geeta Chaudhary.

Based on the crime scene and evidence available, the police presumed it to be an incident of suicide and registered a case of Accidental Death Report (ADR).

The initial post-mortem report failed to reveal a clear cause of death. Subsequently, the body was transported to Rajasthan for the last rites, where the funeral took place.

A Father's Suspicion

Geeta's father, Bhanaram Chaudhary, was unable to come to terms with the fact that his daughter was no more. To top if off, he couldn't believe Geeta would die by suicide. He harbored a suspicion that it was not suicide, but rather a murder.

Senior Chaudhary filed a complaint in Rajasthan and exerted relentless pressure to reinvestigate the case. Geeta's body was exhumed and sent for a second round of post-mortem.

This time, the report established that Geeta had died of strangulation.

2 Failed Attempts And Rs 6.7 Lakh Bounty

The investigation revealed that Sakaram had attempted to kill Geeta not once, but twice. The first attempt involved staging a road accident in the Powai area, while the second included a physical assault intended to take her life.

After the two failed attempts, Sakaram hired his friend, Shankar Dangi, to kill Geeta for Rs 6.7 lakh. Dangi hired two more people - Babu, alias Raghav, alias Amarchand Gayari, and Dinesh to assist him.

On October 14, the accused strangled Geeta to death and hung her body from a ceiling fan.

Investigation Reveals Murder Plot

During the second round of the investigation, the police interrogated Sakaram. He misled the police thrice until he finally confessed to his crime.

Sakaram revealed that he was having an affair with a woman named Dimple Chaudhary and wanted to live with her. To fulfill his desire, he decided to eliminate Geeta.

The police have arrested all four accused - Sakaram, Shankar Dangi, Babu, and Dinesh Gayri.

Man Seen Dancing With Daughter's Lover, He's Now Arrested For His Murder

Sources say Aanchal's father and brother had conspired to gain the victim's trust before killing him.

Nanded, Maharashtra:
In April, he was seen dancing with his daughter and her boyfriend. Nearly seven months later, he is in police custody on charges of killing his daughter's boyfriend in Maharashtra's Nanded because he disapproved of their relationship.

His daughter - who now has a heartbreaking moniker attached to her: 'the woman who married her lover's corpse' - has accused her family of betraying her by portraying "all is well" before they killed her boyfriend, Saksham Tate, on Thursday.

On April 14, Aanchal Mamidwar's father, Gajanan Balaji Mamidwar, was seen celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti in a video. He was seen dancing with his 21-year-old daughter, her 20-year-old boyfriend and his friends. The couple looked happy, unaware of the fate that awaited them. In one frame, Gajanan Mamidwar was seen lovingly hugging her daughter, who has now disowned her family and decided to live with her boyfriend's family instead.

The video also showed Saksham Tate's friends carrying the accused on their shoulders.

Ambedkar Jayanti - the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar - is celebrated by Dalits, adivasis and all the other communities that he fought for. While Tate was a Dalit, Aanchal Mamidwar belonged to Special Backward Class

Sources say Aanchal's father and brother had conspired to gain the victim's trust before killing him.

Aanchal's parents and her two brothers have been named as accused in Saksham Tate's killing. One of his brothers, who fired at Tate and smashed his head with a tile, is a juvenile.

Saksham Tate was shot on Thursday evening, with the bullet piercing his ribs. The next day, during the final rites of Tate, in a heartbreaking moment, Aanchal "married" his body. She also sought capital punishment for her father and brothers for killing her boyfriend.

Hours before that, Aanchal's younger brother, she claimed, took her to a police station to file a complaint against the victim. When she refused, two of the policemen allegedly provoked her brother to kill Tate, Aanchal alleged. "Two police officials provoked him, saying that he should go kill the man, whom I love, rather than getting into a fight with other people."

She said his brother got agitated by their remark and told the officials he would come to the police station after killing Saksham. "Then he killed him," she said.

The couple had been in a relationship for the last three years and the woman, in an interview with NDTV, claimed that her family members hung out with Tate regularly. "They would be nice to him, eat together. They convinced him that all is well. We had no idea something like this would happen," she said.

She also claimed that once her father told Saksham that if he wanted to marry her, "he would have to convert to our religion, Hindu Dharma. Saksham was ready to do everything to marry me. But I don't know what happened".

The accused have been charged with murder, unlawful assembly, rioting, and other offences in the case registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Arms Act, an Itwara police station official said.

Parents, Brother Of Maharashtra Woman Who Married Lover's Body Arrested For His Murder

Twenty-year-old Saksham Tate was killed on Thursday evening after a fight erupted between him and the brother of his girlfriend, Aanchal Mamidwar

Nanded, Maharashtra:
The parents and brother of the woman who married her boyfriend's corpse after he was beaten to death in Maharashtra's Nanded are among six people who have been arrested in the murder case.

Twenty-year-old Saksham Tate was killed on Thursday evening after a fight erupted between him and the brother of his girlfriend, 21-year-old Aanchal Mamidwar.

The police have named eight accused - Gajanan Balaji Mamidwar (Aanchal's father), Jayshree Mamidwar (Aanchal's mother), Sahil Gajanan Mamidwar (Aanchal's elder brother), Somesh Subhash, Vedant Ashok Kundekar, Chetan Balaji Mamidwar and one unnamed person - in the dishonour killing case. Aanchal's 17-year-old brother is also among the accused. While six of them have been caught, two are on the run. The accused were produced in court today and while her mother was sent to judicial custody, the other accused, excluding the minor brother, were sent to three-day police custody.

Aanchal's younger brother allegedly fired at Tate, the bullets piercing his ribs, and then smashed a tile on his head.

On Friday, while preparations were underway for the final rites of Tate, a distraught Aanchal "married" his body. Visuals of the heartbreaking scene have been widely circulated on social media. She also told reporters that she planned to stay in Tate's house from here on.

Later, while speaking to NDTV, she claimed that her family betrayed her. "We were together for three years... My brothers had assured me that they would organise our wedding. But they betrayed us at the last moment," she said.

She also alleged that two policemen provoked her brothers to attack Saksham Tate. "Around 11 am on the day Saksham was murdered, my younger brother took me to the police station and asked me to file a false complaint against Saksham. I refused. The cops told my brother, 'You keep coming here after killing people. Why don't you kill the man your sister is involved with?' My brother replied, "Okay, I will kill him by evening and come to you."

She also said the "murder happened due to caste". While Aanchal Mamidwar is from the Special Backward Class, Tate was a Dalit.

Both Tate and Aanchal's brothers had criminal records and were once close friends. The Mamidwar family opposed their relationship, but the couple's refusal to end it finally culminated in Tate's killing, police said.

At Mumbai Samosa Joint, Man Bites Off Owner's Finger Over Payment Dispute

Ranjit Singh was rushed to a hospital and doctors said his condition is stable. The cops have taken the accused, Mallik, in custody

Mumbai:
In a chilling rage attack in Mumbai's Malad, a man bit off a snack shop owner's middle finger during an altercation over online payment for a samosa and cutlet he ate at the food joint. The shop owner, Ranjit Harivansh Singh, has suffered injuries on his other fingers too and is undergoing treatment at a hospital. The accused, Laximdhar Mangal Mallik, has been taken into custody and will face serious charges.

According to police, Mallik came to the food joint at Malad's Shivaji Chowk on Saturday night and ordered a samosa and a cutlet. Once he was done, the shop owner's son asked him for money. Mallik said he would make the payment online, but the shop owner's son insisted on cash. This drew an angry response from Mallik, and an altercation began. He started hurling abuses and shouting at the eatery's staff.

To defuse the situation, Singh intervened and spoke to Mallik. He asked him to calm down and leave.

This angered Mallik more and what happened next was a shocker. Mallik grabbed Singh's hand and bit off his middle finger with his teeth. He started biting the other fingers too, as a stunned Singh winced in pain. The staff of the shop and Singh's son somehow managed to bring Mallik under control. The police were then called in.

Singh was rushed to a hospital and doctors said his condition is stable. The cops have taken the accused, Mallik, in custody and a case invoking serious sections has been registered. Police said further probe is on.

Mumbai Man Stabs Friend 20 Times, Slits Throat, Stands Near Body With Knife

The police suspect that the primary motive behind the murder was resentment on the part of the accused after the victim allegedly refused to maintain a relationship or live with him.

Mumbai:
A 20-year-old man was brutally killed in a shocking daylight incident in Mumbai's Dharavi area, police said on Monday. The accused has been arrested, and a case of murder has been registered.

According to the Dharavi Police, the victim, identified as Ashwin Shivkumar Nadar, was attacked with over 20 stab wounds by his acquaintance, Ashiq Asim Akhtar Khan and the victim's throat was slit.

The assault is believed to have stemmed from a long-standing personal enmity between the two.

Police officials stated that the accused was found standing near the victim with a blood-stained knife in his hand. Eyewitnesses at the scene informed the police that Khan was issuing death threats during the attack, reportedly shouting that he would not spare the victim and would kill anyone who tried to intervene.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim and the accused knew each other and had a history of disputes.

The police suspect that the primary motive behind the murder was resentment on the part of the accused after the victim allegedly refused to maintain a relationship or live with him. A prolonged personal feud between the two is also believed to have contributed to the crime.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the Dharavi Police rushed to the spot and apprehended the accused.

The severely injured victim was immediately taken to Sion Hospital and admitted to the emergency ward. However, despite efforts by doctors, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

In a separate incident reported on March 17, a 42-year-old man in Mumbai allegedly killed his wife by pushing her in front of an approaching local train following a domestic dispute. The accused fled the scene but was later arrested in Surat by the Railway Police STF.

According to police officials, after committing the crime, the accused initially fled towards Thane. He then boarded a fast local train to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), travelled to Dadar, and later took another train to Virar. Investigations revealed that he subsequently boarded a Gujarat-bound train from Virar railway station before being tracked down and arrested.

"Who's This Segal?" Supreme Court On Centre's Objection To DY Chandrachud's View On Adultery

Citing foreign articles and judgments quoted by former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud in his verdict decriminalising adultery, the Centre said that "blanket reliance on international judgments is impermissible"

New Delhi:
The view taken by former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud in a landmark ruling decriminalising adultery became a point of contention in the ongoing Sabarimala reference hearing on Wednesday, as the Centre objected to quotes taken from American scholar Jeffrey A Segal and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Nivedita Menon.

Citing foreign articles and judgments quoted by Chief Justice Chandrachud in his verdict decriminalising adultery, the Centre said that "blanket reliance on international judgments is impermissible."

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, criticised the concept of "constitutional morality" adopted by two landmark rulings of the Supreme Court which decriminalised adultery and homosexuality.

Mehta said if these two judgments (Navtej Singh Johar and Joseph Shine) were to be read by BR Ambedkar or Kanaiya Lal Munshi or Aladi Krisnan, he wouldn't be sure whether they would be surprised, shocked or they would say this was what they wanted, adding he believes they wouldn't want this to happen.

Mehta criticised the judgment in the Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India case that decriminalised homosexuality, contending that it "demonised" the term morality as mob morality or majoritarianism.

"It is submitted that it is no one's case that in a democratic and secular country like ours, the mob or the majority shall prevail. It simply cannot, not because this concept of constitutional morality coined in 2014 prevents it, but the Constitution and its provisions prevent it," he said.

What Supreme Court Said

When Mehta read the opinion authored by former Chief Justice Chandrachud in an open court, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant asked, "Who is this Segal? He has almost been referred to here as if he was second Ambedkar?"

Chief Justice Kant, however, observed that the quotes in the opinion authored by former Chief Justice Chandrachud are subjective viewpoints of some professors and writers, and that the striking down of adultery is not under question in the present reference.

"These are subjective viewpoints of some professors, some writers, some authors, whosoever it may be, we do not know. We have no clear idea about the eminence of the author whose view has been followed. But, ultimately, the judgment on adultery as such is not under question here," Chief Justice Kant said.

Mehta then clarified he was not challenging the striking down of the law criminalising adultery, but he was pointing out a problem with the observations made about constitutional morality and dignity of women in the verdict, which has formed the basis of views taken in the 2018 Sabarimala judgment that allowed entry of women of menstruating age into the Sabarimala temple.

Justice BV Nagarathna told Mehta that constitutional morality is in the realm of constitutional governance. "It may not be palatable to you but that is not the scope here," she said.

Justice Joyamala Bagchi also told Mehta that the quotes relied upon in Chief Justice Chandrachud's concurring opinion were just the viewpoint of one of the judges on the bench. The judgment that ultimately struck down the adultery law was based on gender discrimination, he added.

Mehta said he was referring to paragraph 195 of the Joseph Shine judgment, where JNU professor Nivedita Menon is quoted.

"I do not wish to trouble the learned professor. She is known for certain views, including that the Indian State is illegally occupying certain states... I am not going into that. But now, her view on fidelity finds place in a Supreme Court judgment. It has the status of being part of the record," Mehta said, seeking its removal.

Chief Justice Kant then asked in a lighter vein that if so many foreign authors can be cited, then why some Indian professors can't be cited?

Mehta, however, insisted that it was not fine to quote foreign authors in Indian judgments. Calling the current nine judge-bench more representative, he said, "None of you all are from Harvard and Yale. This reflects those who have risen from the ranks and played on the streets. So we know what social morality is."

The very next moment, while making his arguments on dissenting opinions by judges, Mehta said dissent is a call to the brooding spirit of future generations.

Justice Bagchi pointed out that Mehta is also quoting former American judge Charles Evans Hughes. "We should look for the best from everywhere and not be a slave to any," Justice Bagchi said.

Mehta replied, "My Lords, we should expect light from every quarter of the world, provided we are in darkness. But let us not reverentially follow something coming from the West and selectively introduce it into our jurisprudence."

Justice Nagarathna pointed out that Mehta is now citing US Chief Justice John Roberts while making his point.

What Former Chief Justice Chandrachud Wrote

In the Joseph Shine v. Union of India judgment, which decriminalised adultery, American legal scholar Jeffrey A Segal has been quoted in the former Chief Justice's concurring opinion. His opinion quoted Segel in saying that throughout history, the law has failed to ask the woman question.

"In any democracy, constitutional morality requires the assurance of certain rights that are indispensable for the free, equal, and dignified existence of all members of society. A commitment to constitutional morality requires us to enforce the constitutional guarantees of equality before law, non-discrimination on account of sex, and dignity, all of which are affected by the operation of Section 497," the opinion by the former Chief Justice noted.

It went on to say: "A woman's 'purity' and a man's marital 'entitlement' to her exclusive sexual possession may be reflective of the antiquated social and sexual mores of the nineteenth century, but they cannot be public morality and societal morality being different from constitutional recognised as being so today."

He also noted that the book Seeing Like a Feminist by Nivedita Menon recognised the patriarchal family as the "basis for the secondary status of women in society".

"Menon notes that 'the personal is political'... Her scholarly work implores us to recognise spaces which may be considered personal such as the bedroom and kitchen. These spaces are immersed in power relations, but with ramifications for the public sphere," the former Chief Justice's opinion read. "This court has recognised sexual privacy as a natural right, protected under the Constitution. To shackle the sexual freedom of a woman and allow the criminalisation of consensual relationships is a denial of this right."

Section 497 denounces a married woman of her agency and identity, employing the force of law to preserve a patriarchal conception of marriage which is at odds with constitutional morality. "Infidelity was born on the day that natural flows of sexual desire were bound into the legal and formal permanence of marriage; in the process of ensuring male control over progeny and property, women were chained within the fetters of fidelity" [Nivedita Menon, Seeing Like a Feminist, Zubaan Books, 2012].

The Centre has now urged the Supreme Court to declare its landmark ruling decriminalising adultery in the Joseph Shine v. Union of India as "not good law", raising fundamental questions about how courts interpret morality and exercise judicial review under the Constitution.

In written submissions filed in the ongoing Sabarimala case proceedings, the Centre argued that while it does not contest the striking down of Section 497 of the IPC as violative of Article 14, it strongly disagrees with the reasoning adopted in the 2018 judgment.

Questioning Menon's statements, Mehta asked, "Fidelity, is it a patriarchal construction? It applies to me also; it applies to men also. Fidelity is not expected only from women."

Chief Justice Kant then remarked, "The provision (Section 497 of IPC), on the face of it, was unconstitutional. It should have been struck down in four lines."

Mehta further read Menon's quote and asked: "Fidelity expected out of marriage is termed by this Hon'ble court, which is a court of record, as shackles on sexuality... I am arguing societal morality versus constitutional morality. Is this societal morality? This is not the jurisprudence of our country. It is not the jurisprudence of my country, and I don't think there will be any dispute on that."

Mehta further read from the judgment: "Constitutional protections and freedoms permeate every aspect of a citizen's life - the delineation of private or public spheres becomes irrelevant as far as the enforcement of constitutional rights is concerned. Therefore, even the intimate personal sphere of marital relations is not exempt from constitutional scrutiny. The enforcement of forced female fidelity by curtailing sexual autonomy is an affront to the fundamental right to dignity and equality."

Mehta then remarked, "This is the right, which is the foundation of the Sabarimala (judgment), right to dignity and equality."

Justice Nagaratha said the concept of marriage in India is based not only by the fidelity of the wife, but the husband also. "The institution of marriage and monogamy is precisely for the reason that there should not be multiple partners," the judge said.

Justice MM Sundresh said, "If you go by this, the presumption of paternity will also go." he also asked how a divorce can be filed on the ground of adultery if it is a part of liberty. Both Chief Justice Kant and Mehta agreed.

Justice Aravind Kumar asked: "In the entire Judgment, is no Indian philosopher quoted?"

"Except Nivedita Menon," Mehta replied in what was seen as a swipe.

He then alerted the police.

A Three-Hour Operation

A team of police arrived at the scene and found the house locked from inside. After nearly three hours of effort, cops managed to enter the house by removing the slabs from the bathroom windows.

Investigation revealed that the doors were deliberately locked from inside. And one of the doors was jammed with a screwdriver.

Initial investigation revealed that her head had been crushed with a bamboo stick. There was blood on the floor where she had fallen.

Suspicion soon fell on the woman's minor nephew, who lived in the same house. "He (the nephew) was very nervous, covered his face, and repeatedly looked towards the room where the body was dumped, with the doors open. The accused nephew had his nose covered and was staring anxiously at the same room where his aunt's body was found."

Police detained both minors and found the body under a sofa-cum-bed.

During sustained interrogation, the minor broke down and confessed to the murder. He also named his 15-year-old friend as an accomplice, claiming he had helped him dispose of the body and destroy evidence.

Motive Behind Murder

According to police, the motive for the murder was shockingly trivial. The deadly altercation began when the home's smart TV was slow to start due to buffering. Irritated, the elderly woman reportedly scolded her nephew, reprimanding him for not keeping things in order and not focusing on his studies.

"Enraged by the conversation, the boy picked up a stick. In a fit of rage, he struck his aunt three times on the head. The force of the blow fractured her skull. She fell to the ground, bleeding profusely," said police.

The accused nephew reportedly called his friend for help and tried to hide the body in the sofa-cum-bed.

The minors have been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.

Mumbai Man Choked, Daughter Beaten Up For Opposing Pigeon Feeding

A woman was beaten up with an iron rod and her elderly father was choked after they opposed to pigeons being fed in front of their residential complex near Mumbai.

A woman was beaten up with an iron rod and her elderly father was choked after they opposed to pigeons being fed in front of their residential complex in a suburb near Mumbai.

On Sunday, 65-year-old Asha Vyas was feeding pigeons when another resident of the area Mahendra Patel opposed it. Hearing an argument between the two, the latter's daughter Premal Patel came down and intervened.

As per Premal Patel, when she asked about why her father was being abused, a resident from Vyas's building Somesh Agnihotri and two others beat her up with an iron rod and tried to strangulate her father.

A case has been registered against Vyas, Agnihotri and two others. CCTV footage and eyewitness statements are being analysed to further investigate the matter.

The incident comes amid growing demand for the closure of traditional 'kabutarkhanas' in Mumbai over health risks.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said "abrupt" closure of kabutarkhanas (pigeon feeding spots) in Mumbai was not advisable, and asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to ensure controlled feeding of the birds.

Any decisions concerning pigeon-feeding zones must be accompanied by alternative and compassionate solutions to prevent the starvation of birds, he said.

The BMC on Tuesday took action against 142 persons for feeding pigeons at 'kabutarkhanas' across Mumbai and recovered a fine of Rs 68,700 between July 13 and August 3.

Currently, a writ petition on the issue of 'kabutarkhanas' is being heard in the Bombay High Court.

The Bombay High Court last week said feeding a congregation of pigeons was an act causing a public nuisance and also posed a health hazard to people, and directed the BMC to file FIRs against people engaging in such activity.

Last month, the court had restrained the BMC from demolishing any of the old heritage 'kabutarkhana' (pigeon feeding spots) in the metropolis, but had said that it cannot permit feeding of these birds.

Maharashtra Man Kills 6-Year-Old Daughter To Contest Panchayat Elections

Pandurang Kondmangale, a resident of Kerur village in Mukhed taluka of Maharashtra's Nanded district, pushed her six-year-old daughter into a canal in Telangana's Nizamabad district.

A man from Maharashtra killed one of his three children to overcome the two-child norm to contest the upcoming Panchayat elections in that state.

Pandurang Kondmangale, a resident of Kerur village in Mukhed taluka of Maharashtra's Nanded district, pushed her six-year-old daughter into a canal in Telangana's Nizamabad district.

Nizamabad Police on Monday announced the arrest of Pandurang (28) and village sarpanch Ganesh Ramachandra Shinde.

Nizamabad Police Commissioner P. Sai Chaitanya told media persons that the body of a girl was found in the Nizam Sagar canal in Yedapally a few days ago. The investigation led to her identification as Prachi (6), a resident of Kerur village in neighbouring Nanded district of Maharashtra.

Police picked up her father for questioning. He tried to mislead the police by stating that she was undergoing treatment at a health centre. When grilled by the investigating officer, he confessed to killing the child.

What he revealed during the questioning was shocking for everyone. Pandurang, who runs a barber shop in his village, was keen to contest the upcoming Panchayat elections. As he had a three-year-old boy and twin girls aged six, he was ineligible to contest in view of the two-child norm for candidates contesting local body polls in Maharashtra.

He consulted his friend and current sarpanch of the village, Ganesh Shinde how to overcome the norm. They conspired to get rid of one of his children, Prachi, the elder of the twins.

According to police, they initially considered putting Prachi up for adoption. But that would not have served the purpose because she would still be registered as his child in the birth certificate.

Pandurang also thought of abandoning the child, but was worried about the consequences in the event of her return. They then conspired to kill the child and make it seem like an accident.

As Nizamabad district is only a few kilometres away from his village, Pandurang took Prachi on a motorcycle to the Nizam Sagar canal. He pushed her into the canal and fled. Some villagers who were working in the field nearby heard something plunge into the water and rushed there to find the girl's lifeless body floating in the canal. They alerted the police, which launched an investigation.

The girl's pictures were circulated widely on social media. Someone from the Maharashtra village identified Prachi when they saw her photo as the display picture on the WhatsApp number of one of the police personnel.

A police team reached the village and began an investigation, which led to the arrest of Pandurang and the sarpanch.

Umpire Stabbed To Death Over Run-Out Decision During Andhra Cricket Match

The injured were first taken to a local hospital, and Ajith Babu was later shifted to Apollo Hospital for further treatment. Doctors, however, declared him dead during treatment.

A 21-year-old cricket umpire was allegedly stabbed to death following a dispute over a run-out decision during a local match in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, police said.

The incident took place on Sunday evening at a local ground where three teams were participating in a cricket match. The victim, Dola Ajith Babu, was officiating the game along with his friend Budumuri Chiranjeevi when an argument broke out between players from two localities over a run-out call.

"Ajith Babu and Chiranjeevi intervened and settled the issue on the field. However, one of the spectators, Kanta Kishore, became angry and started abusing the umpires and players," Circle Inspector Malleswara Rao said.

Police said the accused, Kanta Kishore (26), later called the umpires to "settle the matter." After the match ended, Ajith Babu, Chiranjeevi and a few friends went to a spot nearby, as requested.

"As soon as they reached the spot, another argument broke out. Kishore suddenly pulled out a knife and attacked the two umpires," Rao said.

Ajith Babu suffered a stab injury to the chest and collapsed at the spot. Chiranjeevi sustained bleeding injuries while trying to escape. Another man who attempted to intervene was also injured.

The injured were first taken to a local hospital, and Ajith Babu was later shifted to Apollo Hospital for further treatment. Doctors, however, declared him dead during treatment.

The brother of a man who was stabbed to death has alleged that the attack was the fallout of an argument during a local cricket match, saying a resident of a neighbouring colony, who was not even a player, intervened in the dispute, abused players, and later returned under the influence of alcohol to carry out the killing.

Speaking to NDTV, he said the issue over a single run had been settled by village elders earlier in the day, but the accused allegedly planned the attack and stabbed Dola Ajith in the chest later that evening.

"... In the match, there was an argument over one run. The argument became heated, and the person who attempted the murder was not a cricket player. He is a resident of Vinayak Nagar. He came in between the argument and used abusive words, which led to a serious argument between both teams. Later, village elders came and settled the issue there itself. After everything, in the evening, they were under the influence of alcohol and planned this attack. He carried a knife in his pocket and came to the Padigadli junction and called Chiranjeevi" the victim's brother told NDTV.

"He started shouting and arguing. Suddenly, he took the knife out of his pocket and stabbed Dola Ajith in the chest. We tried to catch Kishore, but he ran away. We took Ajith Babu to VIMS Hospital, but no doctors were available, so we shifted him to Apollo. Around 8.15 pm, doctors declared him dead," he added.

Based on a complaint filed by Ajith Babu's father, Dola Appala Raju, police registered a murder case against Kishore under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and launched a search to trace the accused.

Andhra Man Kills Daughter For Marrying Lover, Cop Suspended For Hiding Murder

The Macherla town Circle Inspector (CI) traced the couple on March 15 and allegedly forced the woman to return to her parents' house.

A 22-year-old woman was killed by her family for marrying her lover, and later tried to cover it up as a case of suicide with the help of a police officer in Andhra Pradesh.

The incident took place last month in Andhra Pradesh's Macherla town.

The woman, Chowdeshwari, was in a relationship with a man - which her family opposed. On March 4, she left her house and married her lover against her parents' wishes. A few days later, her family filed a complaint, following which a hunt was on to locate the woman.

The Macherla town Circle Inspector (CI) traced the couple on March 15 and allegedly forced the woman to return to her parents' house.

According to investigators, the officer threatened the woman and handed her over to her family.

Three days later, Chowdeshwari was found dead at her parents' house.

Initially, her family claimed that she had died by suicide. However, the post-mortem report confirmed that her death was not self-inflicted but a murder. Doctors revealed that she had been suffocated with a pillow while sleeping.

Subsequently, the woman's father, Chandrasreenu, and another relative were arrested as investigators believed they committed the crime out of anger over her marrying against their wishes.

Further investigation revealed that the Circle Officer may have taken a bribe from Chowdeshwari's parents and tried to protect them. Police are checking bank records and large cash withdrawals made by the family.

The officer has been suspended and may face criminal charges for conspiracy, taking a bribe, and destroying evidence if found guilty.

UP Police Counters RaGa’s Claims Over Ghazipur Girl Death

A political uproar has emerged in Ghazipur following the suspicious death of a teenage girl, with opposition parties demanding accountability from officials.

A political row has erupted in Ghazipur after the death of a teenage girl, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi demanding a high-level probe, while police have disputed claims of rape and said facts are being misrepresented. Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition on Saturday called for immediate justice and action against officials, alleging that the victim, from the Vishwakarma community, was raped and murdered.

“In Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, the rape and brutal murder of a daughter from the Vishwakarma community-and then threats and violence to stop the family from filing an FIR. In a country and state where parents have to beg even to get an FIR filed for their daughter, the country's government has no moral right to remain in power.”

He also demanded protection for the victim’s family and action against police officers found guilty.

Police Reject Rape Allegation

Soon after Gandhi’s statement, Ghazipur Police issued a response, denying the rape claim and urging people not to spread misinformation.

“Please be aware of the correct facts. On the morning of April 15, 2026, at 5:44 AM, the victim's father called Dial 112 and reported that the girl had jumped off a bridge and committed suicide. In the FIR registered based on the written complaint of the victim's father in this case, there is no mention of rape. The postmortem of the victim also did not reveal any facts related to rape. Please do not spread any such unverified, factually incorrect, and misleading rumors that disrupt peace in society, Ghazipur police wrote in an X post.

The girl’s body was found on April 15 in the Karanda area of the district. While her family has alleged sexual assault and murder, police say they are investigating all angles.
Tension in the area rose on April 22 when a delegation from the Samajwadi Party was attacked with stones while visiting the village. Several people, including police personnel, were injured. Police said 10 people have been arrested in the case.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav earlier blamed local influential elements for the attack.
“In a Ghazipur village, a lethal attack and stone-pelting were carried out by the village head and dominant elements on the Samajwadi Party delegation going to meet the family of a girl who died under suspicious circumstances,” he said, adding, “Under the BJP rule, neither villages nor cities are safe. Uttar Pradesh is passing through its worst phase of anarchy.”

Political Heat Before PM's Visit

The controversy has gained attention ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Hardoi on April 29 to inaugurate the Ganga Expressway. On the same day, Akhilesh Yadav is expected to visit the victim’s family.

Father, Grandparents, Uncle Arrested For Killing Twin Girls. They Wanted Son

Man, along with his parents and younger brother, plotted to kill the girls because they believed daughters would become a "burden" on the family.

Karimnagar (Telangana):
The horrifying murder of four-year-old twin girls in Jubilee Nagar village was driven by one family's obsession with having a son, police said, as they revealed chilling details of a conspiracy allegedly hatched months before the children were killed.

Karimnagar Rural Circle Inspector A Niranjan Reddy said the twins' father, 28-year-old Srisailam, along with his parents Ashok and Lavanya and younger brother Rakesh, plotted to kill the girls because they believed daughters would become a "burden" on the family.

"Srisailam never wanted girl children. He always wanted a son," the Circle Inspector said. "Even during his wife's pregnancy, after learning that she was carrying twin girls, he tried to force her to undergo an abortion."

According to police, Srisailam, an M.Com graduate working as a computer operator at Prathima Medical College, married Mounika in 2020. When the couple was blessed with twin daughters in 2022, he allegedly refused to accept them.

"He did not even go near the babies in the hospital after their birth," Niranjan Reddy said. "His parents and younger brother also disliked the birth of twin girls. They repeatedly pressured Mounika to abort the pregnancy, but she refused."

Police said Srisailam frequently argued with his wife and eventually sent her to her parents' house. Investigators said he believed his property, which he valued at nearly Rs 2 crore, would be spent on the girls' marriages.

"He believed everything he owned would be lost because of the daughters," the officer said. "His parents and brother shared the same thinking. Finally, all four of them conspired to eliminate the children."

According to the investigation, the family conspired to kill the girls four days before committing crime.

On the afternoon of April 3, Srisailam allegedly told his wife to stay home and cook mutton curry and took the girls to the family's agricultural field, saying he would return shortly.

"He deliberately chose a time when no farmers would be in the fields," police said. "He made the children sit near the well while they were playing."

Srisailam first pushed one of the girls, Geethanvika, into the well, killing her instantly. The second child, Geethamshi, struggled in the water and tried to survive.

"When he realised she was still alive, he climbed into the well and drowned her with his own hands," the Circle Inspector said. "It was an extremely cruel and calculated act."

After the murders, police said, Srisailam staged a false rescue attempt and shouted for help to make it appear like an accident.

When mother Mounika reached the field after hearing his cries, she found one daughter lying near the well and the other still missing. Villagers and farmers rushed to the scene and used ropes to pull the children out.

"When questioned, Srisailam lied and said he had gone to cut grass and later discovered the girls missing," Niranjan Reddy said. "But villagers became suspicious because his story kept changing."

Angry villagers allegedly beat Srisailam before police intervened. He later fled from the spot and informed his parents and brother that "the plan had succeeded", investigators said.

The four accused then hid at a relative's house in Gopalpur before they were tracked down and arrested.

Police later called expert swimmers to recover the second child's body from the well.

"This is one of the most shocking and inhuman crimes we have investigated," Niranjan Reddy said. "The victims were innocent children killed only because they were girls. We will ensure the strictest punishment for all those involved."

Bihar Boy, 5, Stabbed To Death In School. Family Alleges Sexual Assault

According to the doctors, the child was sexually assaulted and repeatedly stabbed with sharp objects.

ehanabad, Bihar:
On April 1, a woman dropped off her five-year-old son at a school hostel in Bihar. Five days later, on April 6, the child was declared dead. The mother now seeks answers as to what happened to her child in those that took away his life. She had sent him to study at a Gurukul in Jehanabad, around 50 km away from the state capital, Patna, and now she is fighting for justice.

The child was allegedly subjected to sexual abuse, and was attacked with sharp objects, resulting in deep cuts across his body.

A Deadly Call From School

According to a written complaint submitted by the child's father, Ajay Kumar Sharma, at around 5:20 am, on April 6, he received a call from the principal and director of the Gurukul Hostel and School, Tarun Kumar, informing him that his son was severely ill.

Ajay was told that his son, Chintu (name changed), was in critical condition and had been admitted to a private hospital. Within 15 minutes, Ajay arrived at the hospital and found his son in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with cut marks all over his body.

"I saw that my child had his throat slit, his genitals severed, and cuts on the left side of his abdomen, his cheek, and beneath his eyebrow," the First Information Report (FIR) read.

On the advice of doctors, Ajay decided to shift Chintu to a multi-specialty in Patna, where he was declared dead.

According to the doctors, the child was sexually assaulted and repeatedly stabbed with sharp objects. The family has also alleged gang rape.

Chintu's elder brother, Rishu, was also enrolled at the same school and hostel, but lived on a different floor. He told his family that on the night of the incident, Kumar had taken Chintu to his room to sleep together.

Family Stages Protest

Ajay returned to the hostel with his son's body, where the family, along with villagers, staged a massive protest, completely blocking the Patna-Gaya National Highway-22, and demanding the death penalty for the culprits.

Traffic remained disrupted for hours, resulting in a massive pile-up of vehicles stretching for several kilometers.

The family believes that more than one person was involved in the death of their son.

Police Investigation So Far

Aurangabad:
Three young children were killed by their uncle in Bihar's Aurangabad district on Friday morning after he allegedly slit their throats one by one using a cutter. Man Beheads Driver In Bihar Market, Dies After Being Thrashed By Locals

Meanwhile, images of Hussain's severed head, lying on the street, apparently captured by onlookers on their phones, have gone viral on social media.

Araria (Bihar):
Tension erupted in north Bihar's Forbesganj town on Thursday when a pickup van driver was beheaded by a roadside vendor, who ended up being thrashed by locals and succumbed to injuries at a hospital, an official said.

According to Jitendra Kumar, SP of Araria district, which is headquartered at Forbesganj, the incident took place in the morning when Nabi Hussain, who drove a pick-up vehicle, had a quarrel with Ravi Chauhan.

"Chauhan used to sell sattu (roasted gram flour) at a local market where he picked up a quarrel with Hussain and attacked him with a dagger, which has been seized by police", the SP said.

He added, "Onlookers caught hold of Chauhan and thrashed him until he was rescued by a police party, which rushed to the spot upon hearing about the incident. Chauhan was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries. The bodies of both the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination. Further investigations were on".

Meanwhile, images of Hussain's severed head, lying on the street, apparently captured by onlookers on their phones, have gone viral on social media.

One such image was shared on X by the leader of the opposition, Tejashwi Yadav.

Yadav slammed the government for the "horrific state of affairs" in Bihar and described the NDA rule as "a messed-up regime." "A man publicly slit another man's throat right in the middle of the market and roamed around with his severed head amidst hundreds of people. Later, the family of the deceased murdered the killer in turn," he alleged.

The RJD national working president also accused the police of "scrambling to save their own skins" during the chaos.

"This incident shows the degraded state of the law-and-order situation in Bihar. While the ruling coalition leaders are engrossed in the game of musical chairs for the 'CM seat', incidents of loot, murder, and rape are rising every day in Bihar," he claimed.

He alleged that the NDA government in Bihar is lost in the "haze of sand and liquor mafias." "Prime Minister Narendra Modi will come back for elections five years later and speak about 'jungle raj' while the situation here in Bihar is pathetic at present," Yadav said.

He also alleged that the incident was inspired by a "recent propaganda film," without naming it.

"The poison that the BJP government is injecting into society through its propaganda is heart-wrenching," he alleged.

Eight devotees, all of them women, were killed and over a dozen injured in a crowd crush at a temple in Bihar's Nalanda on Tuesday.

The stampede took place at Mata Sheetla Temple in Maghra Village, which is nearly five kilometres from Bihar Sharif in Nalanda district. As this was the last Tuesday of the month of Chaitra, a massive crowd of devotees had gathered at the temple.

"It is always crowded here on Tuesday. People come for Sheetla Mata's darshan. We too have come from Patna for darshan. But a stampede broke out, and people died. It happened due to mismanagement...An ambulance has reached here. It is so crowded here. Administration is not here," Mamata Devi, a devotee, said.

"Arey maiyaa (Oh dear god)," a woman could be heard wailing amid the chaos.

Mummy," screamed another.

Disturbing pictures from the accident site showed scores of women lying unconscious on the ground.

In one of the pictures, a man, crouching at the head of a woman, is seen giving her CPR. Another woman pats an unconscious woman's face, pushes her three fingers inside her mouth, then sprinkles water on her face in an effort to revive her.

"Bheed toh bahut tha (There were a lot of people)," he said, without specifying a count, when asked about the number of people who had come to visit the temple.

"Barcading bhi tha (There was barricading as well)," the witness said, when asked if the security arrangements were lax.

Marital Discord Common, One Partner Can't Be Accused Of Abetment Of Suicide: Court

The bench allowed the plea filed by a 49-year-old woman, a teacher by profession, seeking to quash the abetment of suicide case filed against her.

Mumbai:
A spouse cannot be accused of abetting the suicide of his or her partner merely because there was marital discord between the two, the Bombay High Court has said while quashing a case lodged against a woman for abetting the suicide of her husband.

The HC's Nagpur bench, in its order passed last week, held that matrimonial discord is common in domestic life and suicide cannot be attributed to any of the spouses merely because there was a matrimonial dispute. It added that there has to be instigation or direct incitement from the accused to the victim to end life.

"In such cases, it cannot be held that due to abetment from one partner the other committed suicide," the court said.

The bench allowed the plea filed by a 49-year-old woman, a teacher by profession, seeking to quash the abetment of suicide case filed against her in 2019 by the Amravati police.

A single bench of Justice Urmila Joshi Phalke said that in the present case both the husband and the wife had levelled allegations of ill-treatment and abuse against each other and hence at the most it can be said that the woman might have been the reason for frustration of the man.

"Such types of discord and differences are common in domestic life and until and unless some guilty intentions are there, it is ordinarily not possible to show that the woman was responsible for the death of her husband," the HC said.

In its order, the court noted that to charge a person for the offence of abetment, the prosecution must prove that the accused played a role in the suicide or had encouraged the individual to take their life or conspired with others to ensure that the person committed suicide.

There has to be instigation or direct incitement from the accused to the victim to commit suicide, the HC said.

"In order to attract the offence of abetment, there must be mens rea (intention). Without knowledge or intention, there cannot be any abetment," the court remarked.

The bench said words uttered by any of the spouses in a fit of anger would not be sufficient to constitute the offence of abetment.

The suicide note left behind by the man nowhere reflects that he committed suicide due to the abetment by the woman, the court said, adding it in fact clearly states that no one is to be held responsible for his death.

The couple got married in December 1996. The man and his parents alleged that the woman used to abuse them and also used to assault the man. She used to also threaten to commit suicide and implicate them in false cases.

The in-laws also alleged that she was in an illicit relationship with another man and used to leave the matrimonial house for several days without informing.

In November 2019, the man under pressure committed suicide after which his parents lodged a case against the woman for abetment.

The woman claimed that she too was physically assaulted and abused by her husband and his parents during the marriage.

The court noted that in the present case there was marital discord between the couple and allegations of ill-treatment. PTI SP NP

Telangana Nurse Poisons Her Parents After They Say No To Love Marriage

The incident has been reported from Telangana's Vikarabad, where a young nurse, Nakkala Surekha, poisoned her parents for opposing her love marriage.

Vikarabad (Telangana):
Nakkala Surekha, a nurse at a private hospital in Telangana, was upset over her parents' disagreement with her relationship. To get out of the problem, she decided to get her parents out of the way. She poisoned them.

The incident has been reported from Telangana's Vikarabad district, where Surekha, said to be in her early 20s, poisoned her parents for opposing her love marriage.

The accused, Surekha, had been in a relationship for some time and wanted to marry her partner. However, her parents strongly objected to the relationship, leading to frequent arguments at home.

Quarrels were common in the family, and tensions had been building for several months, said neighbours.

Investigators revealed that in a moment of anger and frustration, Surekha allegedly planned to kill her parents.

Surekha, a BSc Nursing graduate, allegedly stole four vials of 2.5 ml each from the hospital where she worked. She administered a high dose of 5 ml to each parent via injection - one intramuscularly to her mother and another intravenously to her father.

The parents fell seriously ill and collapsed. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

Medical reports later confirmed the presence of toxic substances in their bodies, raising suspicion. Police launched an investigation and questioned family members and neighbours. During interrogation, Surekha reportedly confessed to the crime.

"The accused was upset over her parents' opposition to her relationship. In a fit of anger, she took this extreme step. We are investigating how she obtained the poison and syringes. Strict legal action will be taken," said Sub-divisional Police Officer N Srinivasa Reddy.

Police have registered a case of double murder.

Surekha was arrested and produced before a magistrate, who remanded her to judicial custody.

Senior officials said further investigation is underway to find out if Surekha had an accomplice or if anyone was aware of the plan. Authorities are also examining the accused's phone records and contacts.

Ujjain Student Killed In Canada, Family Battles Grief, Rs 50 Lakh Burden

The narrow lanes of Parsvnath City in Ujjain are quieter than usual. Inside one home, silence has replaced dreams. A young life that once carried hope across continents has returned only as a memory and a father now waits, not for his son's call, but to be able to perform the final rites.

Bhopal:
The narrow lanes of Parsvnath City in Ujjain are quieter than usual. Inside one home, silence has replaced dreams. A young life that once carried hope across continents has returned only as a memory and a father now waits, not for his son's call, but to be able to perform the final rites.

On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited the grieving family of Gurkirat Singh Manocha, a student whose life was tragically cut short in Canada. Sitting beside the family, the Chief Minister assured them that the state would stand by them not just in grief, but in the difficult journey that lies ahead.

"We are in touch with the Canadian government through the Government of India," he said, "This is our family, our city's child. The government will support whatever decision the family takes."

Gurkirat, a young student from Ujjain, had gone to Canada with dreams funded by an education loan, dreams carried by a father who worked tirelessly in the food industry to secure his son's future. He was pursuing a Post-Degree Diploma in Business Management at Northern Lights College in Fort St John.

But on March 14, those dreams were brutally shattered.

Gurkirat was first assaulted by a group of 10 to 12 men. Injured and vulnerable, he was later run over by a vehicle. He was rushed to the hospital, but he could not survive.

Now, the grief is compounded by an unimaginable reality.

To bring Gurkirat's body back to India, the family has been asked to deposit nearly $40,000 around Rs 35 lakh. The hospital procedures will take another 15 days, and transporting the body to Ujjain would cost an additional Rs 10 lakh.

For a father who lives in a rented house, this is not just a logistical challenge it is an emotional and financial collapse. "I took a loan to send him abroad," Gurjeet Singh wrote in his appeal. "I wanted him to have a better life. I do not have the means to even bring him back."

Gurkirat's father, Gurjeet Singh, submitted an application to Member of Parliament Anil Firojiya and Chief Minister, requesting urgent assistance. He stated that the family now wishes to perform Gurkirat's last rites in Canada and bring his ashes back to Ujjain. For this, he has requested that the government expedite visas for Gurkirat's elder brother, Prabhkirat, and cousin, Saheb Singh. He has also sought financial assistance of nearly Rs 50 lakh to cover travel and hospital-related expenses. Both the MP and the Chief Minister have assured full support.

The decision to perform the last rites in Canada was not an easy one, it was forced by circumstances. Initially, the family wanted to bring Gurkirat's body back to Ujjain for the final rites. But they were informed that the process could take nearly three weeks and overwhelming costs which ultimately compelled the family to change their decision.

In his application, Gurjeet Singh wrote: "I live in a rented house and work in the food industry to support my family. For my son's bright future, I took an education loan and sent him to study in Canada. On March 14, he was brutally killed. I do not have the financial means to perform his last rites. I request the government to help."

What remains now is a family's grief, and a dream gone sour.

Woman 'Not Guilty' For Husband's Suicide Over Marital Disputes: Bombay Court

The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court noted that if a man dies by suicide due to marital differences, his wife cannot be held guilty of abetment to suicide.

In a landmark ruling on a man's death by suicide following long-standing marital disputes, the Bombay High Court said that the wife cannot be held responsible for it.

The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court noted that if a man dies by suicide due to domestic quarrels or marital differences, his wife cannot be held guilty of abetment to suicide under the law.

What's The Case

On November 26, 2019, a man died by suicide after throwing himself under a train in the Amravati district of Maharashtra.

Devastated by the death of his son, the man's father lodged a complaint against his daughter-in-law, accusing her of frequent quarrels over trivial matters and verbal abuse. He further claimed that she would repeatedly leave for her parental home without informing his son and would threaten to implicate her husband in false cases. Driven to desperation by this harassment, his son died by suicide, the man claimed.

Based on the father's complaint, the police registered a case of abetment to suicide against the victim's wife.

Woman Files Petition In High Court

In response, the woman filed a petition in the High Court seeking to reject the first information report (FIR) registered against her and the ensuing legal proceedings.

While hearing the matter, the High Court rejected all allegations against the woman stating that abetment to suicide is applicable only when the intention is clearly to push someone to take their life.

"Mere marital disputes, verbal abuse, or instances of leaving for one's parental home cannot be categorised as 'abetment to suicide.' A case under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (or Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023) is established only when the accused's intention is clearly to compel the individual to take their own life," the Court said.

The Court further clarified that ordinary arguments or differences of opinion between a husband and wife do not fall within the ambit of abetment. Accepting the woman's petition, the Court dropped the case against her and the ongoing trial.

Kerala Teen, Missing for Days, Found Dead Near Chikkamagaluru Waterfall

In Karnataka, a 14-year-old girl named Sreenanda was found dead after going missing from a trekking site in the Chandradrona Hills. She disappeared during a family trip and was last seen on Tuesday.

Days after a girl went missing from a trekking site in Karnataka, another 14-year-old girl has been found dead in the hills, police said on Friday. The victim, identified as Sreenanda, had gone missing nearly three days ago from the Chandradrona Hills range near Chikkamagaluru. She was a Class 10 student and was on a trip with her family when she became untraceable on Tuesday.

According to a report by The Times of India, her body was found near Manikyadhara Falls around noon on Friday. Rescue teams first spotted her using a drone camera and then rushed to the spot, where they found her dead.

Police suspect that the girl may have slipped into the waterfall area in the dark while trying to find her way back. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report.

Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Dayama said that statements of the girl’s parents and relatives, who were with her during the trip, have been recorded as part of the investigation.
Soon after she was reported missing, police launched a large search operation in the hilly and forested area. Teams from the forest department, fire and emergency services also joined the effort. The search had to be stopped briefly on Tuesday night due to darkness, but it resumed the next day with more teams joining in, including Additional SP Jayakumar.

The incident has raised concerns over safety during treks in the region, especially in difficult terrain and low visibility conditions.
