world xi win by 12 runs.
Hodge, 92, stakes Test claim
02/10/2005 By Ken Piesse
Thanks to 92 from Test squad member Brad Hodge, Victoria made a bold assault on the Rest of the World's 8-282 before falling just 12 runs short in front of almost 10,000 fans in balmy spring sunshine at the Junction Oval.
Batting first, the World XI recovered from 5-120 after 25 overs to make 8-281.
Visiting captain Shaun Pollock, batting at No.9, made a matchwinning 54 not out from just 38 balls, with four 4s and one 6.
Rahul Dravid topscored with 66 from 80 deliveries. He was dropped twice at 56 and 61.
Paceman Shane Harwood took four for 37 and spinner Cameron White two for 49.
In reply, the Bushrangers were gallant in making 7-250, Hodge's 92 topscore.
The Vics lost opener Nick Jewell (2) to expressman Shoaib Akhtar who sprinted in from 30 metres to the oohs and arrs of the big crowd.
New opening batsman Michael Klinger played some aggressive pulls as Victoria reached its 50 in the 15th over.
Soon afterwards he reached his own 50 to generous applause from his home crowd as the Vics lifted their run-rate.
"I'd set myself to make runs early. I want to get the opportunity to play (for Victoria from the start of the representative season). I'm backing myself more now. I'm backing my technique. I have nothing to lose. I'm still only 25 and I'd like to think I can get back in. "It was certainly good to get a few today. It was a good test out there; good fun."
Asked about facing Akhtar with the new ball, Klinger said: "He's definitely the quickest I've ever faced."
In his first state match for three summers, Klinger, 25, played with renewed assurity and seems likely to be given the opportunity to open at both first-class and one-day domestic level this summer.
While Klinger succumbed shortly after his milestone, caught on the mid-wicket fence by Ashes hero Kevin Pietersen, Hodge took over the key responsibility, reaching his half century with a soaring 6 from the bowling of Muthiah Muralidaran.
He'd been struck first ball in the ribs by a beamer by Akhtar.
After an 89 run second wicket stand between Klinger and Hodge, Hodge and David Hussey (32) added 71 in 69 balls.
The run-rate further increased with Hodge lashing out at Makhaya Ntini, a six soaring to the foot of the Kevin Murray football stand, via a leading edge as Ntini conceded 15 from his seventh over.
Before being well caught by Brian Lara on the long-off fence, Hodge had made 92 from 116 balls with four 4s and one 6. He has been selected in Australia's squad for the upcoming Supertest in Sydney, starting on Friday week.
Victoria's run target ballooned to eight an over with the advent of newcomer Rob Quiney, playing his first game for the Bushrangers.
White lifted Daniel Vettori for a 6 over the sightscreen before Quiney (3) was run out by a direct hit by Jacques Kallis from the mid wicket fence.
Earlier the World XI scored at a run a ball early, Virender Sehwag and Kumar Sangakkara delighting the crowd with their flair and willingness to play shots.
