Team Victoria were 213/5 in the 42nd over.

headline on bushrangers website updated every 20 mins.

Almost 10,000 were at the St Kilda Cricket Ground for the 100-over exhibition between the Rest of the World and Victoria in brilliant springtime sunshine. Batting first, the World XI recovered from 5-120 after 25 overs to make 8-281.

Visiting captain Shaun Pollock, batting at No.9, finished with 54 not out, from just 38 balls, with four 4s and one 6.

Rahul Dravid topscored with 66 from 80 deliveries. He was dropped twice at 56 and 61.

Paceman Shane Harwood took four for 37 and spinner Cameron White two for 49.

In reply, the Bushrangers lost opener Nick Jewell (2) to expressman Shoaib Akhtar who sprinted in from 30 metres to the oohs and arrs of the big crowd.

New opening batsman Michael Klinger played some aggressive pulls as Victoria reached its 50 in the 15th over.

Soon afterwards he reached his own 50 to generous applause as the Vics lifted their run-rate.

"I'd set myself to make runs early. I want to get the opportunity to play (for Victoria from the start of the representative season). I'm backing myself more now. I'm backing my technique. I have nothing to lose. I'm still only 25 and I'd like to think I can get back in and play some good cricket at state level again. "It was certainly good to get a few today. It was a good test out there; good fun."

Asked about facing the expressman Shoaib Akhtar with the new ball, Klinger said: "He's definitely the quickest I've ever faced."

In his first state match for three summers, Klinger, 25, played with renewed assurity and seems likely to be given the opportunity to open at both first-class and one-day domestic level this summer.

While Klinger succumbed shortly after his milestone, caught on the mid-wicket fence by Kevin Pietersen, Hodge took over the key responsibility, reaching his half century with a soaring 6 from the bowling of Muthiah Muralidaran.

He'd been struck in the ribs by a beamer by Akhtar to the very first ball he faced.

After an 89 run second wicket stand between Klinger and Hodge, Hodge and David Hussey (32) added 71 in 69 balls.

The run-rate further increased with Hodge lashing out at Makhaya Ntini, a six soaring to the foot of the Kevin Murray football stand, via a leading edge as Ntini conceded 15 from his seventh over.

Before being well caught by Brian Lara on the long-off fence, Hodge had made 92 from 116 balls with four 4s and one 6.

The run-rate ballooned to eight an over with the advent of newcomer Rob Quiney, playing his first game for the Bushrangers. White lifted Daniel Vettori for a 6 over the sightscreen before Quiney (3) was run out by a direct hit from the mid wicket fence.

Earlier the World XI scored at a run a ball early, Virender Sehwag and Kumar Sangakkara delighting the crowd with their flair and willingness to play shots.

Curator Toby Lumsden's pitch, used on Saturday for a club fixture, was fast and flat; ideal for quick scoring.

Having made 32, Sehwag succumbed to a slash to third man, Grant Lindsay on debut holding a smart catch during first-change medium-pacer Harwood's opening over.

Harwood claimed the prize wicket of Jacques Kallis (6) on the hook shot and all but trapped Brian Lara lbw before he'd reached double figures.

Sangakkara fell for 42 when he chipped Tim Welsford, on at third change, to mid-wicket.

Harwood snared a third big-name scalp in his fifth over when Lara (8) was neatly taken at square leg by Klinger, playing his first match for Victoria in three years.

Given a warm reception, English Ashes hero Kevin Pietersen on-drove a four first ball, before also falling to Harwood, having been dropped the delivery before by Brad Hodge at mid-on.

Hodge's miss was the first blemish in an otherwise crackerjack early Victorian fielding exhibition.

Just back from a highly successful year of club cricket in northern England, Harwood had four for 17 from his first eight overs.

The game is a warm-up for the World team which takes on Australia in the first of three one-day internationals in Melbourne from Wednesday.

Hodge, 92, stakes Test claim

02/10/2005 By Ken Piesse

Thanks to 92 from Test squad member Brad Hodge, Victoria made a bold assault on the Rest of the World's 8-282 before falling just 12 runs short in front of almost 10,000 fans in balmy spring sunshine at the Junction Oval.

Batting first, the World XI recovered from 5-120 after 25 overs to make 8-281.

Visiting captain Shaun Pollock, batting at No.9, made a matchwinning 54 not out from just 38 balls, with four 4s and one 6.

Rahul Dravid topscored with 66 from 80 deliveries. He was dropped twice at 56 and 61.

Paceman Shane Harwood took four for 37 and spinner Cameron White two for 49.

In reply, the Bushrangers were gallant in making 7-250, Hodge's 92 topscore.:20:

Victoria's run target ballooned to eight an over with the advent of newcomer Rob Quiney, playing his first game for the Bushrangers.

White lifted Daniel Vettori for a 6 over the sightscreen before Quiney (3) was run out by a direct hit by Jacques Kallis from the mid wicket fence.

Earlier the World XI scored at a run a ball early, Virender Sehwag and Kumar Sangakkara delighting the crowd with their flair and willingness to play shots.

i jus hope he dont get injured in this tour before the england series...

good stuff shoaib, he id going to gain the respect of the english batsmen. First he strikes fl;intoff in the nets then bowling really well in the warm up game. Lets hope he has a really good series and is fit to face england too!!!

I think next he should trip Flintoff or tie his laces - that would be very useful too!

Jokes aside, my confidence in Akhtar Mian is on the rise ( yet ) again !

Akhtar definitely the pick of the bowlers from the ROW World XI side.

Good Stuff :14:
