Babar Azam is quite overrated

That little half push on the leg side off of Rabada is enough to prove his class as a batsman impeccable timing

Babar still needs a daddy score in tests and to win a game for Pakistan under pressure.

While i think he'll get the daddy score eventually (in soft conditions) i struggle to believe he's capable of fighting out of a hole.

Had a poor game but easily the best Pakistan batsman in all formats. Hope he will work on his game against SLA now.

Needs to work very very hard on his game against spin.

Against fast bowlers, he is very good.

Babar really need to work on his batting vs spin, if it continues like this he will be a walking wicket in SL & maybe even in Bangladesh.

Not getting that big stride in to get to the pitch off the ball. needs to use his front foot a lot more against spin.
No one better than younis khan to rectify this problem

virat kohli , joe root , williamson and smith , apl are better against spin than babar.

As if they are all equal...

You can see Kohli is better than Babar against spin but can't see how much Root and Smith are better than Kohli against spin?
Kohli has major failures in his career against spinners.
3 home series, against England, SA and Australia.

Is Babar due a big one in the 2nd Test against SA ?

Has been a quiet time for him for a couple months now, first missed the Test series against NZ and then an average outing in the first test against SA.

Fully expect him to give solid performance against SA in the second test and justify his reputation as the Best Test bats around.

I sense a big score coming from Babar that would eventually win the series for Pakistan.

This series for Babar is gonna be similar to the series Kohli had vs Australia when smith looked at the dressing room for the review. I have a bad feeling but In Sha Allah he gets a big daddy hundred.

Opportunity for Babar now to play a good innings and show the world that he is worth the hype.

He will never reach the heights of Gill or KL rahul even if he plays a good innings here

He is being compared with the likes of Virat, Smith, Root and Williamson, people here think he will be the best batsman ever to come out of Pakistan, meaning better than Inzamam, Mohammed Yousuf, Younus Khan, Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad, Hanif Mohammed, Saeed Anwar, etc... So it's quite normal for me to expect he will play match winning and top class knocks more often that not.

Yep. Pressure is on, Pakistan need someone to dig them out of the hole.

Can Babar do it in less than ideal conditions? He hasn't so far in his test career so i agree that this is his opportunity to show he is more than just a pretty stroke player.

Dramatic improvement against spin already :)) maybe he was just rusty in the last game.
However, the pitch isnt too sluggish at the moment. Lets wait and watch.

Currently he is on par with those players at same stage of their career in terms of his LOI and Test stats. Plus if there was who ever thought he wont be scoring runs at home should really re-think how much cricket they actually understand. Even the likes of Afridi and Akmal were able to score heavily at home and if we look across the border than overseas failures in test like Pujara and Rohit are able to make merry at home.

Babar has demonstrated the habit of getting out early the next morning.

Babar has demonstrated the habit of getting out early the next morning.

Fully agreed. He mostly gets out early in the morning or in the last few over of the day's play. It happened against Bangladesh when he got out in the first over when he was 143. Same happened in England, where he most got out in the similar fashion.

I hope tomorrow morning, he stays longer. I badly want him to score at least 100.

Highlights of Babar's innings today, back to his free-flowing best:

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.250%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/z89gdf" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Looks set to crack on tomorrow and get a century. Hope he makes it a big one too.

The highlights only showed his usual, sumptuous, shots mostly.

How did he fare against spin overall though? Was he getting beaten often? Leading edges? What about his defence - was he able to smother the turn by blocking it at the bounce? Any close appeals?

There are clips on YT of him practising specific drills with YK, but he did not seem to be in full control of all his shots in those.

Too good a player to be kept quiet for long by anyone. But looks like there are tougher examinations against spin still to be had.

He played spin well today. Was watching the ball more closely and played Maharaj's straighter one well. I think Younis must have found the fault being the fact that Babar didn't come far enough outwards to smother the spin.

Looks to have worked, but he will need to keep practicing and get really comfortable with facing away spin.

Will be interesting to see how the pitch breaks tomorrow, and what turn Maharaj can exploit. Babar will have a tougher time against spin tomorrow, but hopefully he can prove the doubters wrong.

Thank you, I appreciate the write up :)

I did not watch a single ball of the Day live and will likely catch up on the recording later, which is what prompted the question.

His YT videos left me unimpressed as he got out a few times, was beaten in flight, had some obvious appeals and got leading edges.

Still not sure whether he’s picking the variations out of the hand but no better way to gain confidence than by scoring runs.

Yasir was enjoying himself so much against Babar he was insisting to bowl out of his turn/having just bowled to Babar, just to continue with his setting up of the batsman.

I dont understand how is on par with the Fab 4 at the same stage of their career.

Lets compare Babar with Virat. By this age Virat had scored runs while successfully chasing 350+ scores. He even scored a quickfire 100 when we needed to score 320 in 40 overs. On the other hand the only significant score we can recall is of Babar scoring a 100 while chasing 240 odd in the WC. Babar scored a 100 against Zimbabwe in a losing cause. Virat had by now scored 183 and almost won India the match single handedly.

Even in t20s Babar has a lot to improve. He seems to score in a single gear from start to finish regardless of the stage of the game. I cannot recall him scoring at a 150+ strike rate while chasing total over 180.

In tests he is nowhere near the fab 4. He is yet to score even 1 match winning or match saving knock.

Babar is a very good batsman no doubt. But he is still work in progress scoring soft runs and padding up batting averages seem to be quite misleading.

Not comparing or anything just answering your question. He scored a 90 of 57 balls in sa chasing 190 but the rest of the scorecard read 91-6 of 63 balls.

Yes, but SA won that match by 7 runs. But I also agree the rest didnt perform and we cannot blame Babar for the loss. Nevertheless scoring 100s and 50s in losing causes wont make much of a case for Babar to be considered in the league of the Fab 4.

Very good knock by Babar, he needs to play these kind of innings more often. Now is the time for Babar to take his game to the next level, if he is to become an ATG.

I knew it yesterday..........

The problem with Babar is his temperament he looks like to score a big score but tends to get out in 60 and 70 kinda like Root but when Root starts going he scores a big one ,Iam sure Babar will fix his problems.

See I told you if he is repeating same thing again and again,he will be known as lower version of Joe Root.

This is third consecutive series of Babar, where he got out in the first over of the morning.

I am surprised, nobody from our coaching panel reminded him to be conscious for the first few overs.

What is our video/data analyst doing.

Wow what an era defining half century at home against mighty SA!! Can Smith, Kohli do that?

Bro calm down.

Only few immature posters here compare him with fab 4. You won't see any serious poster calling him the best in the world.

He is below fab4, but is a good batsman. You need to appreciate the good talent.

Big 3 batsmen like Kohli, Williamson, Smith don't need video/data analysts to tell them anything, they have a brain and quality of their own. Babar always throws away his wicket in ODI's-T-20's after scoring a fifty or in Test Cricket when starting his innings again next day.

Babar has missed out on a 100 in England, a ton here and a big ton against Bangladesh because of this issue. If he doesn't sort this out immediately he won't even be considered a world class players of this generation much less a great of the game

I am calm, I just do not consider him a very exciting talent is all.

I agree he is a fine batsman and one of the most aesthetically pleasing at that.

What is Babar's WTC average when you take out home bashing of SL and BD?

Labu is the best performer in the WTC so far, performed against England, Ind and NZ. All top teams with top class attacks.

It doesn't work like that .Labu has played more matches against sena at home in icc test championship.while babar has played only 1 test against sena at home

Lets separate both"away" stats against sena during icc test championship

Away stats against sena of both

While overall stats against sena of both(labu has home advantage)

He is not overrated. He is brilliant considering the fact that he is a product of a cricket nation that has always had the least amount of talent, skill and cricket intelligence.

99.9% of the people in Pakistan including the players, ex-players, coaches, selectors, analysts, media people, fans etc. have zero understanding of cricket, and to produce a B+ batsman like Babar in these circumstances is nothing short of a miracle.

Yep.

Someone who has played spin surprisingly well is Faheem. I've been left impressed.

Babar needs to stay composed when he's batting the next day, has a habit of getting out in the morning session.

Just a tad his not even the best batsman in the team Hafeez & Fawad are better, his same as Faheem.

& not fit enough to lace the big 4 or whatever they call them boots!!

He is not as good as people think, he simply doesn't have the concentration level to score big. He is just a better version of Asad Shafiq

His game is very good. He might be one of the most talented batsmen in the world right now. It's his mental strength which is clearly miniscule. The guy cannot do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke, as they say.

So players like Imran Khan, Wasim, Qadir, Inzamam, Miandad, Yousuf, Hanif, Z Abbas... have least amount of talent?

When you play cricket for 65+ years and are among the most populated countries in the world, and when cricket is by far the most popular sport and doesn’t have to share resources and doesn’t face competition from other sports, you are bound to produce some talented cricketers every now and then.

However, when you put things into relative context, it is obvious that among all the major cricketing nations, Pakistan is the least talented cricket nation.

Pakistan has failed to produce a single batsman who belongs in the category of Tendulkar, Viv Richards, Lara, Ponting, Kohli, Smith etc.

Pakistan has failed to produce a single WK batsman who belongs in the same class as Gilchrist, Sangakkara, Dhoni, McCullum etc.

Among active WK batsmen, the likes of de Kock, Buttler, Bairstow and Pant are better all-round WK batsmen then we have ever produced. They are a better package than Bari, Saleem Yousuf, Latif, Moin, Kamran, Sarfraz, Rizwan etc.

Pakistan has failed to produce a single proper world class all-rounder in Test cricket since Imran Khan.

Between the debuts of Mohammad Yousuf (1998) and Babar (2015), Pakistan failed to produce a single proper all-format batsman.

Pakistan has failed to produce a single world class Test opener since Saeed Anwar, who also happens to be the leading ODI centurion for Pakistan with just 20 hundreds.

Pakistan does not have a single spinner in the 350+ club yet.

Pakistan has an average legacy in the following departments of the game: batting, all-rounders, spinners, wicket-keeper batsmen.

It only has a great legacy in fast bowling but that was largely down to reverse-swing achieved with illegal means. Once those means became impractical due to great scrutiny and high quality cameras, our fast bowling tumbled.

Please don’t tell me that it is because of the lack of system and infrastructure and we have a lot of talent bla bla. Yes it is partly due to the system but it is also due to the fact that we are not very talented to begin with.

The notion that Pakistan oozes natural talent and will become an unbeatable force with a proper system is perhaps the greatest myth that has ever been recycled in cricket. It is a complete lie.

Last thing Pakistan wanted

Root showing how it’s done. Your drives might be the best looking on this planet, but you ain’t winning matches with your 60s and 70s. Especially if you throw your wicket like Babar does every now and then, going for a flashy drive/ cut

I was not comparing him to fab 4 but previous Pakistani greats who have had simialr careers up until this point. Younis did not become a monster until he was 30 and started to show he will be a great player only around 28.

Regarding fab 4 Virat did not consistently average 50 up until he was 28/29. Smith is another level all together in test and the best we have seen for a long time if not ever. Root is going through a real purple patch right now but he is only making up for real lean 2 years previously and still not averaging 50 at the age of 31 and he may still have another low patch in a year time or something which has been a trend of his career.

Babar needs to improve few aspects of his game currently he scores too quickly on the wickets at a SR of 61 which is too quick for Test cricket. He needs to have a tighter game around outside off and he will score a bit more. But he has a lot of time to go a level up for now he is on par with the rest at similar stage of their careers.

Thats a different test match Babar 77 may still prove to be the highest score in the game.

Why take out his runs against anyone? Do you take out Virat runs against SL or Pujara runs at home and against SL? you will find his average will reduce to late 30s level who you consider among the greatest lol

100% spot on. All the posters here love to bash this guy Mamoon, but as a ghost follower, I’ve noticed he is very knowledgeable in Pakistani cricket. However I will say that Babar is more than B+ Player. He’s world class and I’d say in the top 4/5 in the world.

If this same Babar went to India he’d improve and become their best player hands down.
The unfortunate issue is, he’s surrounded by mediocrity and substandard... I fear it’ll actually degrade him as player overall.

I’ve noted how his innings from yesterday, still wasn’t as fluent as I’ve seen in Australia or even South Africa. It’s like as if being back at home is slowly making him more and more casual and lazy with his technique. Not good signs unfortunately.

People are over-reacting here. Babar is not over-rated nor great also he is more than B+ category.
Out of 100 Babar will get 75 where Root/Kohli/Smith/Willamson will get over 90+. Babar can get around 80-85 if he works hard in his shot selection and concentration.

Why take out his runs against anyone? Do you take out Virat runs against SL or Pujara runs at home and against SL? you will find his average will reduce to late 30s level who you consider among the greatest lol

Please take out Virat's or Pujara's runs against SL like who cares anyways?

Please take out Virat's or Pujara's runs against SL like who cares anyways?

So give us Pujara average after taking out his runs against SL so we can finally close the case on him. He will be exposed more than anyone what a average mediocre player he is.

Please take out Virat's or Pujara's runs against SL like who cares anyways?

If you really want Pakistani players to prove themselves against good opposition then come and play us? That will be a real test of Babar and co's abilities. You'll need to throw out your fascist government first though. I know that'll be a hard choice for you guys for some reason.

Dude why am I getting the feeling you are in need of Burnol? Your team has world class bats so what are you doing here on this forum bashing another countries batsman? You are this insecure? Can’t you focus on your countries greatness, shouldn’t that be enough? What a troll

Since I don't know how your brain functions so can't really decipher why you get such feelings, also quite surprising as Babar is clearly not burnol-worthy, this is like an Indian fan asking Pak fan during the 90's if he needs burnol after he raised some genuine facts about say Sreenath. Also I get the feeling that despite so many posts you aren't very aware of how sports forum works. Members of such forums tend to do in-depth critical performance analysis which may seem alien to an average fan. Asking genuine questions or having a different opinion doesn't make one troll.

He clearly has a conversion rate problem in test cricket, a bit like Joe Root. I back him to sort this out - he will certainly know this is an issue and will work hard on it as he has done with his power hitting and strike rate issues in limited overs cricket.

With Fawad, Babar rescued Pakistan from a bad position but day 2 was when he had the chance to score a big hundred, maybe even a double. He tends to get out like this in tests but I back him to fix this issue.

How does Joe Root fare as a batsman on the next day when he's unbeaten overnight in Tests in recent times? The last ten times he's remained unbeaten overnight, Root has scores of 119, 60, 102, 13, 34, 112, 220, 2, 11, 96 (most recent first) - that's 770 runs from the ten times he's walked out to bat the next day. An average of 85.5 runs per dismissal on those days.

Doesn't belong to the elite category of Root, Smith, Kohli and Williamson. There's no FAB 5 only FAB 4.

This guy is an utter disappointment.

Kohli msut be laughing that he got compared to this guy

Babar performance watch post scandal and as a captain

Babar was mentally weak always. But I think the scandal has given him some really deep scars and the captaincy is adding more to his misery.

Will the scandal be the block to his growth, and stop him from what he was expected to achieve?

It will be a big deal if he can come back from it

No one said he is a bad player.

He is just over rated and should not be mentioned in the fab 4

He is a player like QUinton De Kock.

Since 2020 we were hearing that Babar will do this and do that. Couldnt get any 100 in England, gets injured in NZ, and when plays a home series against SOuth Africa, he scores one 70 and sucks in 3 innings.

The guy isn't near Kohli. He is rightly a B category player like Quinton De Kock

Myopia and lack of vision/foresight is a perennial condition with the majority of posters on this forum.

Kohli is among the top 5 greatest batsmen of all time. He is better than 99.99% batsmen to play the game.

Babar doesn’t have to be anywhere near him to have a great career.

He is very very good. There is no doubt about. However, he is not in the same league as the Fab Four yet.

His mentally is not there and I doubt if it will happen in the future because Pakistan is a very poor team with a very mediocre cricket culture.

People should accept him for what he is. A batsman who can average 50+ in LOIs and 45+ in Test cricket is a diamond for Pakistan considering how bankrupt we are in terms of talent and how bleak our future is.
