Prime Minister Imran Khan addressed the nation through a video message on Wednesday.

The premier's address was solely focused on the Asia Bibi verdict, in which the Supreme Court earlier today acquitted a Christian woman sentenced to death for committing blasphemy.

He criticised the language used by a "small segment" in reaction to the verdict.

He also criticised the protests that broke out, and are still underway, across the country in response to the judgement, saying people's livelihood was being harmed through the roadblocks and demonstrations.

"The kind of language used today — that the judges are wajib-ul-qatl... and the narrative that there should be opposition against the judiciary... It is my belief that the principles on which Pakistan was founded, if they are not adhered to Pakistan has no future."

"Our faith is incomplete if we don't love our Prophet [PBUH]," he said.

"Which government can function when people say that kill the judges, do away with the army?

"We are already facing such tough economic hurdles. We have yet to take a day off... we are struggling continuously to uplift the people [and] to improve the conditions of the underprivileged."

Referring to the protesters who have disrupted routine life across the country, he said: "If the Supreme Court does not issue a verdict according to their wishes, will they come out on the roads?

"The people are to bear the brunt of this. The labours who are reliant on daily wages... how will they survive?"

He urged the nation not to allow themselves to be "provoked" by the agitators.

"This is not a service being done for Islam. This is enmity taking place against the country," Khan observed.

In a stern warning to the extremist elements, the prime minister said: "I appeal to these elements... do not clash with the state.

"I appeal to you, don't harm this country in order to [increase your] vote bank.

"If you continue doing this... let me make it clear to you... the state will fulfil its duty [and] protect people's properties and lives.

"We will not allow any vandalism [or] blockage of traffic."

Address timing
Special Assistant to PM on Media Iftikhar Durrani had earlier announced on Twitter that Khan would address the nation at 7:45pm today.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had tweeted around 6pm that Khan would address the nation "shortly".

The information minister did not state what the prime minister is likely to talk about in his address.

State-run PTV also said it would broadcast an "important message" from the prime minister at 7:45pm.

Khan's anticipated address comes a day before he is scheduled to leave for China on an official visit. According to the Foreign Office, the prime minister will depart for China at midnight on November 1.

The premier has communicated with the people through televised addresses several times since his election to the top office. In his speeches, Khan has shed light on various issues of national importance.

His last address to the nation was on Wednesday last week, when Khan reassured the public regarding the steps taken by his government to tackle the economic hardships faced by the country.

The prime minister, whose address came soon after he returned from a visit to Saudi Arabia, had described the $6 billion bailout package by the Kingdom as a big relief for Pakistan and vowed to mediate between Saudi Arabia and Yemen to end their ongoing conflict.

Khan had said he also expected Saudi Arabia-like monetary assistance from two other friendly countries after which the government might not need to seek as big a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as had been planned earlier.

As if no one knew the facts that you have presented.

But since it was a mistake we shouldn’t try to correct it because???

Imran Khan was firm as always. He doesnt seem to care what people think, and if he will remain in power or not. He will do what he thinks is the right thing to do.

Would like to think that most of us won't do any damage to our country.

You can blame Army for creating/backing Taliban, LeJ etc and all those militants but blaming them for the creation of TLP is stupidity we all know how this only extreme group from this biggest Bralevi sect came into existence.

Totally agree and i said it at the time this group was created as well, just because fauj did this in the past doesn't mean fauj is doing it again. This same idiot who threatened fauj and judges at the time of Mumtaz Qadri's hanging abused Raheel Sharif and indicated that hanging is being done due to fauj's understanding and Raheel Sharif was at peak of his popularity at the time from all corners due to Operation Zarb e Azab.
We all supported and appreciated when Nawaz gov went ahead and hanged Mumtaz Qadri as per court orders.
Just because Army didn't launch military strikes in their own country against average citizens during Faizabad fiasco doesn't mean they support this fitna.
When Nawaz Sharif's son in law Safdar blasted Ahmadis and fauj, ISPR issued clear statement that soldiers belonging to all sects and religions are equal for them.
Now this latest attack on fauj by this idiot shows that Army can't be possibly behind them otherwise why would they openly threaten an Army chief which has never happened before.

We should have a separate thread as an archive of political hypocrisy in Pakistan.

In case you suffer from short term memory loss, same monsters were backed by Army and sold Govt down the river, in less than a year ago...Not so ironically, within a year they have turned back on their masters ;-)

Secondly, what goes around, comes around... All this 4 decades (actually its more like 4 centuries) investment in all things Islam and promoting Islam++ is coming to hunt us. These militant and heavy dose conservative culture has done nothing to bring prosperity to Pakistan...It has made us dummer, violent and lag behind in every possible positive indicator to measure civilized society...Liberals did not ask for this, Army has done anything they could do to through liberals out of the country in the name of traitors...This Hell House is making of their own!!

Fine words. Hopefully it will be followed up and the religious groups will learn that rabble rousing and incitement to violence will no longer be tolerated. Put the troops to use Imran.

Nearly 24 hours. No action yet. All words. Talk of putting Asia on ECL by their own information Ministers.

Words themselves are action, it is a good step to address the nation first and make intentions clear to warn the rabble rousers. If this has no effect, then will be the time to deploy troops. Hopefully it doesn't come to that. As for ECL I will not comment on speculation at this point.

On the other hand Fazl-ur-Rehman Sahab has called for the protesters to stay on the streets and keep doing what they are doing.

sound like a broken record who is unable to take the situation into account at a particular time.

You haven't said anything new.

Your solution is to go on killing spree of other Pakistani.

Clashing with the state, blocking country's capital and destroying government properties is fine when you want to become PM of the country.

Dharna and torh porh is halal/Jaiz for PTI only.

Beautiful video of our president. Band kardo Karachi ko...

What a beautiful speech and then he goes and agrees a deal with the mullah brigade

Absolutely pathetic from the party and the PM.

Fragile people make fragile governments.

What was the point of the fake speech if he was going to backtrack in 3 days?

Have to feel sorry for the posters in this thread who were showering praises on what a leader he is.

Shameful!!I would have applauded him if he had stuck to his guns and had actually taken on the rabid mullahs. Instead, he bent backwards, further emboldening them. What if tomorrow, Rizvi stages protests and demands IK to expel all Ahmedis? What would IK do?A terrible precedent has been set.

Did he stop the bloodshed on the streets or not? Is economic activity back to normal?

We may not like the outcome but if you are a business in Karachi or Lahore, you are heaving a sigh of relief.

Its not easy but if there is one person who can resolve this, I would trust Imran Khan.

Pakistanis welcomed a tentative return to normalcy on Saturday following an agreement between the far-right political party Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and the government after three days of violent protests that choked various cities and throttled economic activity.

In Islamabad and Karachi, traffic returned to normal after protesters ended sit-ins and road blockages were removed over the night.

Life returned to normalcy in Lahore after the largest group of TLP supporters wrapped up their protests late Friday night. Road blockages that had crippled the city have been removed and traffic has now begun to flow unimpeded. Public schools have also re-opened, though attendance remained thin on the first day.

According to DawnNewsTV, Tehreek-i-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYRA), a faction of the TLP, is still holding out and has continued its sit-in at Data Darbar.

Protests in Peshawar had ended soon after the deal between the TLP and the government was finalised last night. Road blockages around the city have also been removed.

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had headed a rally in Peshawar on Friday, but ended it after his address. He was scheduled to join the TLP camp later but was advised by police not to follow through due to security risks.

In Quetta, though religio-political parties had held rallies, no sit-ins had been reported.

The TLP and other religiopolitical parties had launched countrywide protests on Tuesday after the Supreme Court acquitted Asia Bibi, who had been on death row for the past nine years on blasphemy charges.

Last night, the government and the TLP had signed a deal to conclude the latter's nationwide protest. One of the major concessions the government agreed to was to "initiate the legal process" to place Asia Bibi's name on the exit control list (ECL).

The government had also assured the party that it would not oppose a review petition filed against the Supreme Court's judgement in the Asia Bibi blasphemy case. The state further promised to take appropriate legal action to redress any deaths that may have occurred during the protests against the Asia Bibi verdict and to release all people picked up in connection with the protests starting October 30.

The TLP, in turn, only offered an apology "if it hurt the sentiments or inconvenienced anyone without reason".

The speech was necessary as it laid out his and the government’s thinking on this.

What happened thereafter was also unavoidable, the country had to start moving again.

The religious extremists are entrenched in Pakistan and it will take a monumental effort to remove it and dare I say it may take a decade or more and the only way will be through education and prosperity..

As much as I would like IK to take a hard line on this, it’s Just simply not possible.

And one month down the line, Supreme Court either releases Asia, where we get the same issue again.....

Or since her lawyer left, and no one else will fight for her, she is executed. Which is preferable?

“In the current scenario, it's not possible for me to live in Pakistan,” the 62-year-old told AFP before boarding a plane to Europe early Saturday morning.

“I need to stay alive as I still have to fight the legal battle for Asia Bibi,” he said.

.No need to argue here with people who have been supporting crooks

He also said he'll only return if Army gives him protection.

Imran's deal with TLP will prevent that.
