Talent Spotter : Zafar Gohar

What a beauty. Rated highly for some time and is now showing the hype. Hope he gets picked in ANY format.

The only left arm spinner who actually turns the ball instead of darting it.

That is something! Imad can learn a lot from this boy.

Good display of bowling but don't forget he got thrashed by the PZ tailenders like Umaid and Wahab.
In this match 8 (out of 9) IU wickets were taken by spinners, Samit Patel took more wickets than him, Shadab was more economical than him. Even newbie Said Badar was extracting almost similar turn from this pitch in the previous match.

Too early too say he's back to his best. Let's see how he performs on slightly different pitches, against better players and under pressure etc.

Get him in the team. Better than Imad and Nawaz. Too bad those two are rated highly by the people higher up fsr.

What most people don't know is that Zafar is a clean striker of the ball as well. Also electric in the field.

Zafar at the post-match presser:

"We were given a plan by Misbah Bhai and we hit the right areas which brought us success"

"The last 6-7 months were very tough for my career (shoulder surgery etc) but I am feeling very good now"

"There was pressure on me but I had trust on my skills and I backed them"

"The ball with which I got Darren Sammy was a magic ball and I really enjoyed that"

Waited a long time for him to show that, but knew he had it in him. Fine player, please keep him in the team for the remainder of the games. Genuine turner of the ball, this is the sort of player to invest in, not Imad and Nawaz. I can't vouch for Zafar's batting, we need to see more of it and hopefully he can earn a Shadab-esque promotion seeing as United's path to qualification looks clearer than the rest.

Definitely a must in the test team. In conditions when we need to play 5 bowler Faheem, Zafar, Yasir, Amir and Abbas. That should be the attack

I have doubts whether Faheem is good enough to play as an all-rounder in tests.

I personally agree with you that Sarfraz bat at 6 with an allrounder at 7. Agha Salman, Talat, Shadab and Faheem are potential candiatates but none really stick out right now.

What i suspect will happen is we will continue to play 6 batsmen + sarfraz at 7, and get Haris and maybe Fahkar if he gets called up, to bowl as the 5th bowler

Exactly. He is a far better batsman than Imad and Nawaz.

I don't think we can say that, he hasnt really shown it yet in his domestic career. In under 19s he was an allrounder.

He clearly has ability though, we saw that in his one innings at International level, just needs to work on it a bit

He's a spinner who can really spin it big. His only problem is too many loose deliveries. Unlike Yasir, who maintains consistent line and strangles the opposition for long spells, Zafar hasn't been able to do that. But he is a guy worth investing in.

He should be part of the Test squad atleast for NZ.

Wouldn’t mind playing him and Shadab together in the Asia Cup also.

Good to see him playing first class cricket again (return from injury).

1-21 vs ZBTL in the first innings.

Zafar Gohar showing his quality in the second innings with 3-62 from 30 overs (12 maidens). Most pleasingly of all is he bowled a long spell so he is back to full fitness insha’Allah.

Must admit I am surprised he is still playing for Lahore Blues; they have a decent bowling line up but lack any depth to their batting.

Follows up his good start to the domestic season with a good performance in the first round of the Quaid-e-Azam One Day Cup:

3-26 from his 9.2 overs vs ZTBL to help his side win.

Round two of the QeA Trophy vs PTV:

1-65 in the first innings yesterday and then was sent in at three as a nightwatchman. He had other ideas; has batted all day today to reach 67* (136). That's nearly four hours of batting!

He's his side's top scorer- let's see if he can get to three figures. Match is nicely posed.

Good to see him doing well.He should be in the national squad. He is much better than nawaz and imad. He can actually turn the ball unlike these so called spinners.

When will Inzi and the selection committee wake up and realise that Zafar is the best SLA option in Pak and move away from the likes of Nawaz, Imad and Asghar?

Would love to see him in the next test squad. We are desperate for a 2nd spinner in tests.

Tough for his, as long as Arthur in charge. Respect to his credibility as a top class Coach, he has inherited problems when it comes to pick spinners, particularly classical spinners who turns & flights. Nawaz & Imad are preferred over a genuine SLAO spinner only because they are perceived to be better bat. Last winter, Ul Haq did pick Asghar against SRL, but Arthur didn't play him - I can bet if it was Imad, or even Newaz, PAK would have gone with 2 spinners.

This is not only Arthur, I have seen from almost every English coach - Woolmer backed MoHa, Malik & Afridi over Arshad/Saq, Mushi, Kaneria for their batting & "tight" spin, while latest I see Rhodes has joined BD set up & Nazmul (Apu) is in ODI squad - I am almost certain, he'll start ahead of Miraj, though we already have another SLAO in Shakib. And, English cricket hardly mastered Leg spin over 150 years in either way.

Gohar should have been PAK regular as 2nd spinner since against WIN 2 years back, preferably in both formats. I give a full fit Imad the nod in T20, for his tight bowling and better batting ability.

Finished on 76 (167).

Took 12-1-43-2 in the second innings (wickets of the two highest scorers, Umair Khan and Saud Shakeel).

Round three vs Wapda QeA Trophy:

45.4-6-100-5

His side look like they will give Wapda a big lead so he will have a key role in the second innings.

Btw, looks like the move to three is a permanent one but he didn't do much this time.

9-0-54-2 vs WAPDA in QeA Cup. Took the wickets of the two openers who were also the highest scorers.

Mushy needs to recommend this guy to Inzi/Mickey ASAP.

Doesn't seem to be playing this round.

Rested? Or more optimistically in line for a call up?

Aizaz Cheema ran riot in their most recent game so Zafar didn't get to bowl much. 1/26 in 13 overs.

13 wickets in 4 FC matches so far this season.

His only chance is a change in selection committee. Inzi has no clue. I’d be surprised if he is even selected in the A team squads.

The revolutionary won't select him. Give it up.

He's 23 so there's hope.

He impressed in the last PSL but was mysteriously dropped after ONE match where he dismissed Hafeez, Sammy, and Dawson for match figures of 3-25. (Shadab Khan had the same match figures in the PSL Final against the same team).

Misbah preferred Sami Patel's batting to Gohar's bowling so he never got a chance after that. A bit like his only International Match where he picked up Root and Hales for 2-54 only to be dropped for Yasir Shah who returned with 1-57.

He's also a handy lower-order batsmen who won PAK U-19 the WC SF' in 2014.

He could have had three years of Test experience by now if not for a ill-timed nap...

Too bad LQ let him go just to have Raza Hassan in last PSL. He is way better than Raza Hassan any day.

I hope they play Raza Hassan this time as he was also good but played only two matches,This time WI offie Narine is not there.

I dont think so LQ will retain Raza Hassan after trading Hassan Khan from QG and giving them their silver pick. I guess yasir, bilal and hassan will be LQ primary spinners this season.

How is this man not in our team right now. A solid spinner, who is a capable lower batsman and a decent fielder. Islamabad should have played him more last season.

Dropped after one game where he got 3-25.

Tauseef Ahmed is meant to be the spin guru on the selection panel but seems to be asleep.

Excellent Bowling and good arm balls to the right handers.. Saj Bhai tell Azhar and Mickey to include him in test and slowly integrate him into the test team as we need a proper genuine spinner as a backup to yasir shah.

May never does not want his child future to be ruined . His son plays F.C. cricekt.

Apples to Oranges comparison since his son is an off spinner where actually there is not much of any competition in Pakistan these days

Then what is the reason that the guy is even being ignored for A tours.?

Don't know why but is Tauseef's son included in the A team, if he is not then not sure we can mention him as the reason for sure?

From what I have heard Zafar annoyed a lot of people when he overslept and missed his test debut. Not sure Tauseef has ever forgiven him...

This guy is massive Turner of the ball but unfortunately gets unnoticed most of the times. He is currently the best left arm spinner in Pakistan. He is miles ahead of Imad, Nawaz, Asgar, Raza & Hasan khan.

Well he has himself to blame. Overslept when the opportunity came running to his door.

Well he has himself to blame. Overslept when the opportunity came running to his door.

That's the word of a genuine Muslim - believes in single death. The kid missed an opportunity of his life time 3 years back, so he must be killed & buried there forever. These are bull sh!t excuses - he doesn't have anyone to back him in selection table, hence that issue is kept alive; as if he over slept to bunk a training session!!!!!

He is by far the best classical SLAO spinner in PAK and he can bat - actually he batted with more maturity at U19 WC SF against ENG U19 than entire PAK senior team had done in this decade at respective level. His only lacking I saw is control - among some jaffers, he tends to bowl an odd one, that's boundary written on it. But, he can improve in that area only if he plays lot more game at highest level and plays under pro coaching. At present, his skill set is high enough to get away with that odd loose ball at domestic level hence he is bowling like at 2.5 economy, but it won't happen against International batsmen - they'll play him out carefully and take advantage of the lose one. And, he can play 20 more years in QeA style, he won't improve much - Zulfi Babar probably has 1000 wickets in domestics for 50 years career :(, but he was stuck at Test average 40 level and still running riot at FC games at this age.

You ask me - Zafar has a far better potential to be a world class all-rounder than Shadab, because his core skill is bowling. You can improve a 12 average tailender into a 23 average useful lower order; but it's near impossible to bring down bowling averages significantly, because improving bowling is faaaaaar tougher than batting. Obviously I am talking about improvement from 12 to 23 or say 19 to 29 - average of 40+ is different story, but neither Shadab is remotely close to that batting level either.

Zafar like Zeeshan is super hungry for success. InshaAllah, they will both get their opportunity and grab it with both hands.

Over all a good day for him picked in PSL took 3 wickets and not out on 34 batting at 3.Sending clear cut message to Mr.Revolutionary.

Thtas is another thing to consider as patel can bat and they did the samelast year plus isd has only 5 foreigners so patel will surely play.

Bowled a decent spell today (1-18). Unlucky not to get more wickets.

Seems to be missing the drop to go to the next level. From what I have seen of him lately he has gone backwards from his U19 days.

From the clip I can see he is trying to push the ball in air - that's the alarming risk of playing too many T20s. I wrote sme thing 2 years back when Shadab was selected for Big Bash. Gohar had beautiful loop & drop from a good flight, but that ball always come with a risk of going into crowd against slog swing with heavy bat.

T20s are dominated by spinners once they have developed their game and has the maturity - it's a curse for young spinners. Take today's T20I between BD-WIN - Shakib took 5 wickets and Miraz 1 (went for plenty as well in 3 overs), against a WIN team with few Lefties & not so good players of spin. This same kid Miraz took 12 wickets in last Test against same team and arguably was BD's best player of the ODI series. The only reason is that Shakib with his experience knows exactly when to push it and when to flight it; Miraz is often confused and looses his control.

Gohar is risking a career ending path - he was bowling beautifully in FC games, now this.

He can adjust to both styles depending on the pitch and format. That's why he's the best in Pakistan.

Seems to have gone backwards from what I saw of him a few years back.

He used to loop and spin the ball a mile back then, but now he is just darting them in like Imad Wasim.

This does not look good at all for his future.

I think we need a Zafar Gohar more for his batting at no.8. Looks a decent prospect.

Looks to have gone backwards- I could have bet my last rupee that he would be successful at the higher level but very disappointed with his progress. Lacks the drop from what I have seen, let's hope he proves me wrong.

Was bowling with loop and flight today,I liked that.
