Big hitter doesn't necessarily mean quality batsman. Otherwise afridi would have been a greater batting legend than viv in this regard.

Except Finch is the best T20I player. Maxwell and Lynn are also great T20I players.

You need to stop being biased all the time.

They were. Maxy is passed his prime. I only see him as liability now. This team doesn't inspire anything to be honest. Probably the weakest aus team since I started to watch cricket in 90s. I believe you won't even disagree to it.

Their bowling is weak. Not their batting. Finch, Maxwell, Lynn can demolish any attack once they come into their own. To say they are past their prime is an exaggeration.

Very good T20 player. He needs to start clicking in tests and perform at a higher level in LOs as well. He is the one who should be the backbone of Pakistan team and it is time he starts proving this to the world in every format of the game and in all conditions.
 
Superb performances - he should adopt the T20 approach in ODIs.
 
He has improved since he first came. He seems determined and working on his shots and power game too. We saw a sample of his power game today.

To me it looks he is mainly left to work on his power game and after that he'll have all the basis covered to be a great batsman in LOs.

Some may think you are jumping the gun but from the first moment I saw him till now, he seems like he is the most complete batsman (based on potential) Pakistan have ever had. Inzy, Yousuf, Khan, Abbas and MIandad were all great but were better or worse in one of the formats. Inzy was imo a terrific middle, lower middle ODI bat, Yousuf the classical test batsman with an underrated but ODI streak (did not match POnting or Tendulkar though), Khan the consummate, gritty test number 3/4 and Abbas and Miandad the exceptional batsmen of their age.

BUT none of them weer as exceptional as Babar has the potential to be across formats. None.

Only thing which he needs to work on quite a bit in my view is defense against spin. Otherwise he has a complete game. Other thing is to stay away from selfish players like Hafeez.

I remember in one of the Faisal Bank t20 tournament he played some scintillating innings where he showed his complete range of strokes. If you have such shot making ability i dont think its difficult for you to thrive in t20s.

Imo he was ready for odis since his 2nd u-19 world cup i-e 2012 world cup but PCB especially the selectors and team management wasted his 4-5 years and continued with ordinary batsmen.
 
Pakistan desperately need this kind of batsman for the future generations. It will set an example for youngesters to follow him in case they want to be successful. We always talk about batting greats but none of the Pakistani came to mind, at least Babar has the capability to succeed at higher level.
 
I like this kid, he has a habit of scoring runs and adapting to the situation (like how he was smashing the Aussies in the last T20, but played circumspect in the 1st one due to collapse). My only issue is that he goes missing whenever we need him most, NZ series and Asia Cup come to mind.

Yes, Babar is one of the few guys who was hyped in the domestic game and when I viewed him I thought, "ok, this kid has something".

He is a better limited overs batsman at this stage than Kohli, Root and Kane and miles ahead of Smith.

I think if he can stay at 5 for a while in tests, work on playing the longer innings and working on his concentration, he could be a top 5 test bat in the next 5 years.

It is just remarkable how much talent and skill he has so early, so quickly and in a team which seems to be consistently transitioning.

I don't think that is true at all.

He was crucial throughout the CT which is Pakistan's biggest win since the world T20.

He was THE best Pakistani player on show in Australia on his first tour down under and even managed to look like he was developing into a good test bat in England before the injury. PLus, when he scores big, Pakistan win.

I think, Babar has lots of scope for improvement, which does make it like he hasn’t reached peak (80% is just a number). That suggests, he can be more effective in terms of finishing game, spin play, cashing on loose overs (by 5th/6th bowler) - May be statistically won’t be evident much (already his LO stats are brilliant), but he’ll become more dominant batsman.

First line is about achievements, not stats - Babar has long, long,....... long way to go before playing two absolute boring & selfish innings played by some Javed Mirandad in 1992 WC SF & Final .... or that 58* at Neheru Cup Final. But, he is as important as Javed Mirandad was - difference is one was for World champs, other one is for sometimes border line minnows these days.
 
40 off 40 balls today.

That was one ordinary innings. Missed out on several balls that he should have hit for a boundary.
 
As I said before, it's stupid of the coach/management to give him role of accumulator. He has a decent power game.
 
I usually praise him in T20s, but was a bad innings today, left far too much for the rest as he played too slowly.
 
The innings was fine until the last 2 deliveries. Had already gotten 8 runs off the over 2 singles would have been enough. But the idiot decided to try and hit boundaries which resulted in 2 dots and a new batsman having to come in. If I was the coach I'd slap him silly for the stupidity. If it hadn't been for his wicket Pakistan would have been 4-5 runs ahead at this stage needing 35-36 off 4 overs to win.
 
We would’ve lost if he stayed in any longer tbh. Was choking the innings and clearly can’t hit as well as Hafeez against the spinners especially.
 
I echo Boi's statement. Babar got out at the right time. In fact 40 runs, already around 2/3 of the overs had been completed. If anything he got out too late, we would have benefited a bit earlier before the req rate went over 10.
 
Atrocious innings and had he kept on going, it would have meant certain defeat for Pak

Heck, if Zam didn't fire today, then a certain loss would also have been on the cards

Hafeez, Malik and even Sarfraz can play anchor, plus can hit the spinners in the middle, which means babar needs to utilise the new ball and score quickly or get out
 
Not convincing.

Lacks power (as has been said time and time again) to put away bad balls.
 
Tried too hard today and failed. Should have just stuck to his natural game.

Yeah Babar played slow, but RR was only 8.8 with 6 overs left when he got out. Very managable.

Had Babar not had a brain fade and tried to go for singles instead we would have gotten 2 singles easily off the last 2 balls of the Southee over. Instead of 96 for 2 after 13 overs we would have been 98 for 1.

The next over went for 3 runs because Asif started feeling the pressure and Hafeez was new at the crease. Had Babar been there getting 6 off the over would not have been a problem, we might have even gotten a boundary. Even if you count 6 we end up at 104/1 after 14 overs instead of 99/2.

Those 5 runs make quite a bit of difference. How? We took 5 runs off the 15th over and ended up at 104/2 after 15 overs. Same amount of runs with the difference of 1 complete over!

The way Babar got out was utterly stupid and nearly lost us the game. His inning wasn't spectacular by any means, infact it was below par but it didn't let the chase get out of hand before his last 2-3 deliveries.

This accumulator role should not exist in T20s. It's a risky tactic that will backfire.
 
I think he got frustrated ...... may be staying still and using the pace would have been better.......dont really know but better is expected from him....may be at wickets with more pace would be better for him
 
His strike rate is too slow to be a premier t20 batsman (i.e. Devilliers, Gayle, etc...).

However, his role in this team is to provide stability and rotate the strike. It is the other batsmen's job to keep up with the run rate.

Not saying this is the correct way of playing modern day cricket, however that is the strategy Pakistan management has decided to use. Babar is performing his given role very well.

What was a worse innings than Babar's was Asif Ali's. Asif is supposed to be this big hitter, however he batted at run a ball for most of his innings.

Asif's under pressure to score longer innings given the asia cup debacle. And is close to losing his T20 spot too, if Farhan had performed, Asif might have been out.

So I'm not so sure it's fair on Asif to just assume he should hit out. It's far higher risk of getting out. He has no bowling to fall back on. While Babar could have potentially upped the ante, no danger of being dropped and was already set.

I think you'll start seeing him increasing his SR when playing up the order once he's comfortable that his place is secure. He's hit quite a lot in the past when needed, and still has a phenomenal overall SR of 140, only fakhar matches that.

Babar usually bats around SR 120 which is more than fine IMO with that average. And Asif made a good score batting only a bit under that at 112. But Babar was batting under SR 100 which wasn't acceptable. Plus Asif was going for hits towards the end, had he stayed in by ball 41 like Babar he would have likely been sitting on a very good SR, unlike Babar.

He is the new Amla. Greats stats in Limited Overs but minimal impact on the proceedings. A soft player overall who cannot handle intense situations.

Can’t complain though - he is very prolific and that is what our poor batting needs. Beggars can’t be choosers. He will probably end up as Pakistan’s most prolific ODI and T20 batsman ever.
 
Every T20 team needs to have a Barbar type batsmen and if you look around you’ll see that the top teams do..

For cricketing site, one i’ve been a member of since 2005, it’s extrenely disheartening to see the lack of cricketing knowledge displayed here, especially by the the seniors.

Which team requires somebody that scores 40(41) in a T20?. Give me the names of such top order players from top teams like India, England, Australia?
 
He consumed one third of all deliveries and scored just above a quarter of the total runs. And that includes the power play overs in a chase.
 
Anyone else here thinks Babar looked much better alongside Farhan? Seems as if he really just sits back while Fakhar is at the other end.

They were both very slow but calling Babar's knock a "Good innings" and Asif's one "did not do his job and played slowly" just makes no sense whatsoever.

Yes every team needs a guy who can score under 100 SR in T20Is.

Cites lack of cricketing knowledge when he never had any to begin with. :vk2
 
Babar Azam might frustrate you, but there is no doubt his batting makes sure Pakistan does not collapse in a heap at the top of the order. When he goes early, we disintegrate. Those are facts.

Why not accept that this team, as with other top teams, have one gun player that hold everything together???

He is no power hitter or a slogger and his runs will come quicker on better wickets... but the class is there and a class player will do well in every format.

Just apologise and move on.

Very good innings today. It was worthy of a world record. He's got the selfish streak of Sachin with discipline and will score bucket loads. Just needs to find that extra gear during PP overs and he will be lethal
 
Its a UAE pitch. The big hitters from NZ and Australia have not been able to cross 155 in 3 games a piece. His strike rate is perfect if you take context into consideration.

Good score by Pakistan and he played well. It just isn't suffice for one to get so smug about it when he scored less than run a ball in his last game - lets not pretend we don't see these slow knocks a a lot of the time.

From being no fit enough to be on the t20 tram he has become the most important batsman in the side.
 
Needs to improve his power game. Doesn’t last an over when the time comes to hit sixes.
