[VIDEOS] Bangladesh army chief confirms PM Hasina’s resignation [Update at Post#189]

dude. His govt was in power before Modi. He went with a Delegation including his mommy to.China. He signed an MOU with CCP and the Chinese secret service. Even the picture is literally on the internet. There was a big debate in the parliament asking him to disclose the details of the MOU and he never did. Like I said, wish you knew how to Google.

lol this was way back in 2008. Which was some routine MoU signed like those done at every faltu diplomatic meeting. you are conflating some high ranking public meeting MoU with the CCP, as being signed with the Chinese secret service.

What do you think the MoU's contents were - that RG will spy on behalf of chinese secret service ? And he signed that in a public meeting and also took part in a photo op. What if he doesnt follow through, will the chinese secret service sue them in Hague for breach of contract.

Bhai seriously stop being so gullible when some news confirms your priors. In fact be extra cautious in that case. We are automatically sceptical of anything that goes against our beliefs and apply due diligence

Anyone can post anything on social media. The page is a biased page (VoiceOfHindu71). Do you expect them to be neutral?

Right now, Bangladeshis are too busy celebrating Hasina's defeat and going after Hasina's party members. No time for what you are accusing them of.

Also, army is in charge now. These things are unlikely to happen now.

If any innocent person (whether Hindu or Muslim) is harmed, I 100% condemn it.
What will they do with your condemnation?

What will they do with your condemnation?

There is nothing going on. Indians are spreading fake news like losers on Twitter and elsewhere.

I think I am going to put you on ignore (for supporting propaganda).

P.S., any decent person should condemn any alleged bad thing. I know decency is generally missing from BJP posters.

I used the word "if".

If it is true, I condemn.

Truth is it didn't happen like Indians were propagating on Twitter. A few isolated incidents might have happened (then again Mashrafe's house was set on fire too; people are just angry). Definitely not happening countrywide and not at a large scale.

Mortaza had condemned attacks on hindus in the past, so he was also in the firing line.

If it is not religion, and political as you say, then most hindus would be awami supporters. Therefore eligible to be purged by the mob.

If you know the truth with certainty, that it is all fake news, why even use "IF" to show you have doubt over the statement you made?

You are sounding like a philosophy student.

If an innocent person is harmed, I condemn. What's so complex here?

I have no doubt about the statement I made.

You first said that all are fake news. But you also offered condemnation. So the "IF" means there were seeds of doubt.

It is not like violence against hindus has not happened in the past and recent past. Do you deny? I can provide tonnes of evidence.

Did it also occur to you that your social media has been programmed to be a bubble which filters news based on what you like to hear?

Is it false that Kali temple was attacked? Which politician lives in that temple?

Isolated cases are not the norms. That's all I am saying.

Again, I always condemn attacks on innocents.

Disgusting videos of Bangladeshis attacking/ raping Hindus circulating on SM.

No wonder the Pakistanis had them as slaves. Finally after all these decades the Bangladeshis have shown their true colours. Imagine we had been dealing with these people and been giving them grants from our tax payers money. Pathetic. It’s time to make them pay.

Oh so you agree that attacks are happening, but they are isolated.

How do you decide what is isolated and what is not?

How do I decide?

If it is not countrywide and not happening at a large scale, it is isolated (by definition).

Anyway, country is cooling down now. It may take a few days to get things back on track.

But why is it even happening? Why attack iskcon temple?

So next time don't cry about indian muslims, because there is nothing large scale, all isolated. And unlike Bangladesh, where you will not find a crime by hindu against muslim, there is plenty of muslim to hindu crime in India.

Keep your large scale filter handy when next time muslims, for whom you feel for, face anything.

Student protesters call for Nobel laureate to advise government as they prepare to meet military

Student leaders in Bangladesh have called for the formation of a new interim government with Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus as its chief adviser, as protest coordinators are set to meet the country's army chief on Tuesday morning.

It comes as Bangladesh's prime minister Sheikh Hasina, 76, resigned on Monday and fled to India after weeks of deadly protests. Later reports suggest she left India for London on Monday night.

At least 56 people were killed in violence on Monday, as protesters stormed the official residence of the prime minister, shouting slogans, pumping fists and showing victory signs.

Thousands more took to the streets of Dhaka to celebrate Ms Hasina's resignation of her 15 years in power.

Bangladesh's army chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman promised the military would stand down. He also vowed to launch an investigation into the deadly violence that left nearly 300 people dead in the past month.

The demonstrations began with students seeking to end a quota system for government jobs, but clashes with police and pro-government activists escalated into widespread violence.

That triggered more protests demanding accountability from the government, which had grown into calls for Ms Hasina - who won a fourth straight term in January in an election boycotted by the opposition - to step down.

Thousands of opposition members were imprisoned in the run-up to the most recent election.

Ms Hasina, the daughter of independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is the longest-serving leader in the history of the predominantly Muslim country of 170 million people.

Before becoming prime minister in 2009, she had already been in the role between 1996 and 2001.

Her father was assassinated in 1975 during an army coup. Most of his family members were killed, with the exception of his two daughters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana.

Her political opponents have previously accused her of growing increasingly autocratic and called her a threat to the country's democracy.

Rahul Gandhi questions possible foreign involvement in Bangladesh unrest

Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has questioned the government on the possible involvement of foreign actors in the recent unrest in Bangladesh, which led to the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister.

Gandhi raised his concerns during an all-party meeting on Tuesday, convened by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who briefed leaders on the escalating situation, reports The Times of India.

The government in response said all possible angles were being investigated.

Gandhi also sought clarity on India's long-term and short-term strategies regarding the crisis, to which the government responded that the situation was evolving and would be continuously analyzed.

Jaishankar expressed hope for unanimous support across party lines, informing the leaders that the government was in contact with the Bangladesh Army.

The meeting also included Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and AICC President KC Venugopal.

Additionally, Central government representatives, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President JP Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, were present.

Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister on Monday afternoon in the face of nationwide protests, before fleeing the country.

Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman later in the day addressed the nation announcing that an interim government would soon be formed.

Hasina reached India on Monday evening and, according to media reports, was expected to continue her journey to London.

Bangladesh parliament dissolved a day after resignation of prime minister

Move comes after longtime leader Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled country after weeks of deadly unrest

The president of Bangladesh has dissolved the country’s parliament after an ultimatum issued by the coordinators of student protests that forced the resignation on Monday of the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.

The office of the president, Mohammed Shahabuddin, also announced that the former prime minister and opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia had been officially released from prison and given a full presidential pardon.

The announcements came as student protest leaders were in a meeting on Tuesday with the army chief, Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman, after the military announced it would form an interim government following the departure of Hasina.

On Monday, Hasina resigned and fled the country after at least 300 people were killed in a crackdown on demonstrations that began as student protests against preferential job quotas and swelled into a movement demanding her downfall.

Celebrations erupted on Monday after Hasina resigned, and continued overnight. The prime minister’s residence was overrun and looted and several of the ruling party’s offices were set alight.

Reports suggested calm had returned to the streets on Tuesday and many of the crowds were helping in the clear-up or congregating in peaceful gatherings around the capital, Dhaka, and other towns and cities.

Zaman planned to meet the protest organisers at noon local time (0600 GMT), the army said, a day after Zaman announced Hasina’s resignation in a televised address and said an interim government would be formed.

Zaman held talks with leaders of major political parties – excluding Hasina’s long-ruling Awami League – to discuss the way ahead.

An interim government would hold elections as soon as possible after consulting all parties and stakeholders, Shahabuddin said in a televised address late on Monday.

He said the release of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) chair and Hasina’s nemesis, Zia, 78, who was convicted in a graft case in 2018 but moved to a hospital a year later as her health deteriorated, was “unanimously decided”. She has denied the charges against her.

Nahid Islam, one of the key coordinators of Bangladesh’s student protest movement, issued a fresh ultimatum to the president in a video statement, demanding the dissolution of parliament and warning of further protests if this demand was not met.

“We still see the existing parliament in place even after the people’s uprising ousted the fascist Hasina government. So, we are giving an ultimatum: by 3pm today, it has to be dissolved,” he said. He also urged people to remain calm and peaceful.

Early on Tuesday, there were international commendations for the Bangladesh army’s conduct. A White House spokesperson said: “The United States has long called for respecting democratic rights in Bangladesh, and we urge that the interim government formation be democratic and inclusive. We commend the army for the restraint they have showed today.”

The US Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, said the interim government must aim to set up swift democratic elections. “PM Hasina’s violent reaction to legitimate protests made her continued rule untenable. I applaud the brave protesters and demand justice for those killed.”

In the UK, the British foreign secretary, David Lammy, called for a full UN investigation into the killings.

Hasina won a fifth term in January in an election boycotted by the opposition and called out as not free and fair by international observers.

Her government was accused by rights groups of misusing state institutions to entrench its hold on power and stamp out dissent, including through the killing of opposition activists.

The latest student-led protests began over a quota system they said disproportionately allocated government jobs to the descendants of freedom fighters from the 1971 independence war.

The resulting crackdown led to the worst violence since Bangladesh was founded. During a briefing at army headquarters, Zaman promised an investigation into the deaths.

The coordinators of the student protests on Tuesday called for the formation of a new interim government with the economist and Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus as its chief adviser, according to a video released on Facebook.

“In Dr Yunus, we trust,” Asif Mahmud, a leader of the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) group, wrote on Facebook.

Yunus, who was in Paris, had agreed to the role, a spokesperson told Reuters. They said he planned to return to Bangladesh “immediately” after undergoing a minor medical procedure in the French capital.

In an interview with India’s the Print, he said Bangladesh had been “an occupied country” under Hasina. “Today all the people of Bangladesh feel liberated,” Yunus was reported as saying.

Yunus, 84, and his Grameen Bank won the 2006 Nobel peace prize for its work to lift millions out of poverty by granting tiny loans of under $100 to the rural poor of Bangladesh, but he was indicted by a court in June on charges of embezzlement that he denied.

“Any government other than the one we recommended would not be accepted,” Islam said in a video with three other organisers. “We wouldn’t accept any army-supported or army-led government.”

“We have also had discussions with Muhammad Yunus and he has agreed to take on this responsibility at our invitation,” Islam added.

In January, Yunus was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, along with three other people, for violating labour laws at Grameen Telecom, the not-for-profit company he founded in 1983.

In June, Yunus told the Guardian he had come under 20 years of pressure from the Bangladeshi government for his work, which is credited with improving the lives of millions of poor people, particularly women.

The World Bank, among the first development partners to support Bangladesh after its independence and which has committed about $41bn in grants and interest-free credits, said it was assessing events but remained committed to supporting the “development aspirations of the people”.

The World Bank’s board in June approved two projects totalling $900m to help Bangladesh strengthen financial sector policies and improve infrastructure.

This feels good. Freedom finally after 15 years of shackle.

Great to see Khaleda Zia getting presidential pardon.

lol seriously, so your contention is that RaGa agreed to spy on his country (extremely hard to believe in the first place) and then was stupid enough to sign a MoU to the same effect in a public Photo op. Do you think that's how spy agencies recruit assets - sign MoUs with them at high profile events. what is the point in it.

Countries go to ruin because people refuse to apply any due diligence to fake news as long as they believe in it. Once they lose the ability to tell fact from fiction, they are open to being manipulated by political leaders

Where are the terror apologists now?

Need more evidences?
there are literally 100s of videos on reddit and other social media platforms. Discord has a separate channel to showcase Temple vandalism and attacks on Hindus. One incident in India, Muslims in BD and even Pakistan shout genocide. Now there is a poster here defending this on this platform

ISI changed Bangladesh government, claims Indian media

Pakistan’s premium spy agency – Inter-Services Intelligence – changed the government in Bangladesh, an Indian media outlet reported while quoting an intelligence report.

Tarique Rahman, acting chief of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, met with officials from ISI in Saudi Arabia, India Today reported. The meetings were part of a broader plan to allegedly destabilise PM Sheikh Hasina’s government and restore the BNP.

The plan was reportedly drafted in London with the intelligence agency’s purported involvement.

Protests erupted in Bangladesh over a controversial quota system, which reserved a significant portion of government jobs for veterans’ families. Though the Supreme Court reduced such quotas, the protests escalated into a broader anti-government movement, leading to violent clashes.

Social media played a crucial role in the unrest, with numerous anti-Hasina posts, many originating from Pakistani and US-based accounts, the Indian media report said.

According to India Today, Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, is allegedly backed by ISI.

Pakistan expresses solidarity with people of Bangladesh, hopes for ‘peaceful return to normalcy’

Pakistan on Wednesday expressed solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and hoped for a “peaceful and swift return to normalcy” after deadly protests led to the end former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s rule two days ago.

“The government and people of Pakistan stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh, sincerely hoping for a peaceful and swift return to normalcy,” the Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement.

“We are confident that the resilient spirit and unity of the Bangladeshi people will lead them towards a harmonious future,” it added.

The statement comes as a caretaker government is expected to be formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus after student protest leaders asked him to do so.

The movement that toppled Hasina rose out of protests against public sector job quotas for families of veterans of Bangladesh’s 1971 independence war, seen by critics as a means to reserve jobs for allies of the ruling Awami League party.

More than 400 people have died since July as security forces sought to quell the unrest but the protests grew and Hasina finally resigned and fled aboard a helicopter on Monday after the military turned against her.

Hasina flew to India and is staying at a safe house outside New Delhi.

Bangladesh’s army chief General Wakeruz Zaman announced on Monday that the military would form an interim government, saying it was “time to stop the violence”.

The next day, President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved parliament today — a key demand of the student leaders and the major opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP), which has demanded elections within three months.

Hasina’s arch-rival, BNP chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, was also freed from years of house arrest.

Streets in Dhaka were largely peaceful on Tuesday — with traffic resuming and shops opening, but government offices mainly closed.

Chaotic violence on Monday had seen more than 100 people killed — the deadliest day since protests began in early July.

A further 10 people were killed on Tuesday, taking the total toll to at least 432, according to an AFP tally based on police, government officials and doctors at hospitals.

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) has said 200-300 mainly Hindu homes and businesses have been vandalised since Monday, and 15-20 Hindu temples were damaged.

The student leaders also said that they had received reports of attacks on minority groups, including Hindu temples, in the Muslim-majority country, and urged restraint as this could undermine their movement.

India, West urge ‘calm’

India’s foreign minister S. Jaishankar told parliament on Tuesday that New Delhi had repeatedly “counselled restraint and urged situation to be defused through dialogue”.

Stating he was “deeply concerned till law and order is visibly restored” in Bangladesh, Jaishankar said India had assured Hasina of its help and given her time to decide the future course of action, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported quoting sources.

India also said what was “particularly worrying was that minorities, their businesses and temples also came under attack at multiple locations”.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the importance of a “peaceful, orderly and democratic transition”, his spokesman had said.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell echoed that call. Similarly, former colonial ruler Britain, along with the United States, had urged “calm”.

What's their sudden gripe with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman? He is the father of their nation. What wrong did he do?

so he signed a MoU with the Chinese secret service for what exactly?

What do you think would be in the MoU that's so damaging that they cant disclose it but still RaGa has to stick to its terms because they put it in writing.

Articulate your allegations, dont make just random insinuations because someone forwarded them on whatsapp

Maybe Hasina should try one of the Middle Eastern countries. The likes of KSA/UAE will be happy to host her a la Nawaz Sharif.

This is a misconception among foreigners and especially the indian public thanks to their media, the current issues are being caused by bandits and supporters of the previous dictatorship regime who want to get some revenge for the ignominious defeat. There are many posts in social media about local people coming out to protect temples from these goons.

Everything will be sorted once the interim government is put in place and the police are back on the field. The people of Bangladesh are ecstatic to get rid of this dictator. People have been celebrating for days.

Exactly, brother.

These Indians are coming up with all sorts of funny theories which of course are not true. We Bangladeshis know why it was needed for Hasina to go and we made him go.

The infamous Indian media is coming up with all sorts of wild theories. I laughed my backside off.

I hope things will become normal very soon and Bangladesh will have a properly elected government again.

Restoring order is the key now. There is no reason for protestors to be on the streets anymore now that most of their demands are met.

Lawlessness breeds more lawlessness. focus should be on future, not taking revenge on Awami League leaders

Bangladesh’s interim government will take oath on Thursday, says the military chief

Bangladesh’s military chief said Wednesday that an interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus would be sworn in on Thursday night as he returns from Paris to take over the administration amid struggle for restoring stability after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to step down and flee.

Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman said in a televised address late Wednesday afternoon that the responsible for the violence since Hasina’s resignation would be brought to justice.

Yunus is leaving Paris to return home on Thursday to take the oath of office at night.

Speaking to reporters in Paris, Yunis said “I’m looking forward to going back home and seeing what’s happening there, and how we can organize ourselves to get out of the trouble that we are in.″

Asked when elections would be held, he put his hand up as if to indicate it was too early to say. ″I’ll go and talk to them. I’m just fresh in this whole area.″

Yunus is a good pick.

There is no mass attacks on Hindus . India lost its puppet & is mourning so hard it’s become delusional .

Its nice to see years of violence now ended in the country

Bangladesh declared an interim government. Things should become normal again very soon in sha Allah.

Some violence stuff happened here and there but it was not like what Indian media and Indians were reporting. They were spreading fake news. I guess they are hurt because their agent Hasina is no more.

Bangladeshi people and army tried to protect Hindus from rioters. Also, things have started to cool down now.

Yet another reminder why Indian media is possibly the most laughable and insane media in the world.

Well, most people who are not blind can blatantly see the common problem everywhere.
Religious extremism and racism is a common problem, India has Hindutva and caste system, England has EDL, Pakistan has Islamist, USA has KKK and evangelicals Christians, etc.

Out of jail, Khaleda Zia's first message: We have to build democratic Bangladesh

In her first reaction after being released from jail, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia urged her countrymen to build a "democratic Bangladesh where all religions are respected".

In a video message in Bangla, Khaleda Zia said, "You have been praying for my health all this while. I am able to speak to you to due to the blessings of Allah. We have been able to get independence from this fascist government. I pay my obeisance to the brave ones who gave their lives."

"We have to form a new Bangladesh from this victory where the youth and students will be our hope," she said.

Zia also warned against attacks on religious minorities. "We have to build a democratic Bangladesh where all religions are respected. The youth and students will get this done. A progressive Bangladesh where there is peace and prosperity. A country where no revenge and hatred is not present," she said.

Khaleda Zia, 79, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for graft in 2018 under the rule of Sheikh Hasina. She was released on executive order from President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday following the collapse of the Hasina-led Awami League government.

The Bangladesh National Party (BNP) chairperson is currently undergoing treatment for various ailments.

Well it was a matter of time before the rss led Indian nationalists & their fans turned on bangladesh. They never loved Bangladesh but were happy to have the leaders on their side .

India isn’t an empire , never has been a global one in its entire history. It can’t control nations unlike USA , but still a huge achievement to oust out the decades long corrupt government

What a Joke. They are talking about democracy when they recently done the coup in order of USA.

What will be sorted? Aren’t the homes of Hindus getting robbed I posted Bangladeshi article coz you dont believe Indian media on the Hotel burning , Rahul’s house burnt.. bro that’s not Indian media but your media.

You really don't know about india .

No one can control india . USA was upset becouse india at the same time using American and Russia together.

They want india to proxy against China and india say no .india will do what they want .

This is why USA need a base around china to control them and they chose now Bangladesh .

So first thing they did to remove Indian influence in bangladesh as Awami league's was Pro india.

This tweets explained everything regarding india - USA

So.... In the end, it seems like the internal structure of Bangladesh and Pakistan are not THAT different. The power hierarchy remains the same as it seems.

We will see how much longer India can hold out, as they have now lost significant proxy influence in the region. The noose is being tightened as they say. Population and economy wise, India cannot be ignored but influence is clipped piece by piece.

Third world is arbitrary metrics, the real metric is gdp.

GDP decides your importance in the world.

so he signed a MoU with the Chinese secret service for what exactly?

What do you think would be in the MoU that's so damaging that they cant disclose it but still RaGa has to stick to its terms because they put it in writing.

Articulate your allegations, dont make just random insinuations because someone forwarded them on whatsapp
It's on public record with a picture that he signed an MOU. He acknowledged it too but wont disclose whats in it. On what capacity? No one knows. He was not even a minister in the cabinet then. Anyway, time for.you to stop arguing and start googling. It's all there online with pictures. If you don't want one to.speculate, then disclose what's in it.

Lol this is bordering on insane. You first said he signed an MoU with the Chinese secret service. When pointed out that this was just a faltu diplomatic meeting with the Chinese government, not the secret service you started insinuating there was something nefarious in it.

Hence the question what do you think was in the MoU that had to be put in writing? That India will hand over the dalai llama 🤣

You can pick any diplomatic meeting. I read that Modi met nawaz sharif at his relatives wedding in Pakistan and promised to give away kashmir to him. There is both photo and video and they even had a long conversation my WhatsApp sources claim

Google confirmation bias and try to improve your detectors. Otherwise you will get taken in by some Nigerian prince promising to hand over millions in exchange for a small fee

I think that one's clear enough. He went to meet Nawaz mainly to get advice on how to launder the big stuff and get it out of the country. Nawaz is one of the global masters and has incredible laundering contacts. Modi's guys just don't have the same expertise.

BD army chief got his payment. He sold out to external powers and did nothing to save the dignity of a lady PM.

Such a poor post, ignoring the key difference.

The meeting between Congress and CCP was on a party to party basis. Their MoU was between two parties.

Modi meeting Sharif is two head of states meeting. It would be equally wrong if Modi signs an MoU with Nawaz Sharif for BJP and PMLN.

Head of states have mandate to pursue diplomacy even with enemy states. What is this party to party meeting which congress did?

BD army did the right thing. They have no right to fire bullets at their own people. Was Hasina an indian puppet or not??

Yunus Urges Bangladeshis To 'Get Ready To Build The Country'

Bangladesh's Muhammad Yunus, who is set to lead an interim government after the premier was ousted, called for calm and urged people to use the opportunity to build a better nation.

"I fervently appeal to everybody to stay calm. Please refrain from all kinds of violence," the Nobel-winning microfinance pioneer said in a statement, a day ahead of his expected return to the country from Europe.

"Be calm and get ready to build the country. If we take the path of violence everything will be destroyed."

The 84-year-old will lead a caretaker government after mass protests forced longtime prime minister Sheikh Hasina to flee, the presidency has said.

"This is our beautiful country with lots of exciting possibilities," he added.

"We must protect and make it a wonderful country for us and for our future generations."

Hasina fled by helicopter on Monday after more than a month of student-led protests, which started as a campaign against civil service job quotas but escalated into demands the leader quit.

"I congratulate the brave students who took the lead in making our Second Victory Day possible, and to the people for giving your total support to them," Yunus added.

"Let us make the best use of our new victory. Let us not let this slip away because of our mistakes."

He has said he wants to hold elections "within a few months".

In January, he and three colleagues from one of the companies he founded were sentenced to jail terms of six months -- but immediately bailed pending appeal -- by a Dhaka labour court, which found they had illegally failed to create a workers' welfare fund.

All four had denied the charges and, with courts accused of rubber-stamping decisions by Hasina's government, the case was criticised as politically motivated by watchdogs including Amnesty International.

Yunus later travelled abroad -- but is due to fly from Europe to arrive in Dhaka early Thursday afternoon.

Key political leader Tarique Rahman, acting president of the former opposition Bangladesh National Party, spoke via video broadcast to a giant rally of supporters in Dhaka.

Rahman, who went into exile in London during Hasina's rule, urged for elections to be swiftly held.

"The vote should be held as quickly as possible," Rahman said, also urging calm.

Since Hasina fled, police reported mobs launching revenge attacks on her allies.

"Don't take laws into your hands", he told BNP supporters.
