An 85-year-old woman was burnt to death in her home in Delhi’s Gamri extension
At around noon on February 25, when Mohammed Saeed Salmani was out buying milk for his family, he received a call from his younger son. An armed mob of around 100 people had entered their lane in Gamri extension, around 1.5 km from Khajuri Khas in Delhi, and were setting shops and houses on fire. Their four-storey house, too, had been torched, and his family had sought refuge on the roof.
When Salmani ran towards his lane, people from neighbouring lanes restrained him. “They told me it was too dangerous, I could be killed, and I should just wait because what’s happened has already happened,” said Salmani, a 48-year-old owner of a readymade garments business. “I was stuck for hours, thinking that my family was dead the whole time.”
While most of his family survived the arson, Salmani’s mother, 85-year-old Akbari, died in the fire on the third floor of their house. The building itself was burnt, including the family’s tailoring workshops on the first two floors. Salmani claims that the mobs also looted him of Rs 8 lakh and all the family jewellery stored in the building. “I have nothing left, I am zero,” he told Scroll.in.
Akbari’s body is now at GTB Hospital, and her family has been told that her postmortem will be done on Thursday. Salmani plans to bury her in their village in Meerut district, and also plans to file a first information report against the unknown arsonists.
Gamri extension near Khajuri Khas is one of the many areas across North East Delhi that have been rocked by violence after clashes broke out over the Citizenship Amendment Act. Clashes between supporters and opposers of the law began on Sunday evening and escalated from Monday onwards after mobs chanting “Jai Shri Ram” attacked several Muslim neighbourhoods with stones, lathis and arson.
Muslim residents of Gamri extension told Scroll.in that their area has received very little attention from the police and the media so far. On Tuesday evening, as the threat of more attacks by Hindutva mobs grew, all Muslim residents of the area left with their basic belongings and sought refuge with relatives and friends in other parts of Delhi.
“We don’t know when we will be able to go back, and I don’t think we will be able to continue living in that area in the future,” said Sohail Ismail (name changed), a 30-year-old from Gamri extension.
‘They burnt our Quran’
According to Ismail, Gamri is predominantly populated by Hindus, with around 90 or 100 Muslim houses and one mosque called Aziziya Masjid. Violence in the area first began on Monday night, February 24, when around 200 Muslims from different parts of Delhi were passing through the area after offering the annual Kasabpura Ijtema prayers held every February at a mosque in Karol Bagh.
“These people were on their way home towards Loni, and when they reached the Khajuri area, a mob of 100 to 150 Hindus attacked them with stones and lathis,” said Ismail. Around 200 Muslims sought refuge in Gamri’s Aziziya Masjid, where they remained all night. At dawn on February 25, said Ismail, local Muslim residents helped them get out in small groups of twos and threes.
Later that morning, at around 10.45 am, Ismail claims a large mob returned, chanting “Jai Shri Ram” and anti-Muslim slogans, and began attacking people and homes with stones and petrol bombs.
“This went on for more than two hours, during which they also broke into our Masjid, vandalised everything inside and burnt our Quran,” said Ismail. A local medical store, bakery and other establishments in the area were also set on fire, he said.
“They tried to burn one Muslim man too, but he was saved by a local Hindu family,” Ismail said.
‘My mother was old, could not run’
Salmani’s four-storey home was one of several homes targeted by the mob for arson. “My family locked themselves in but the mob broke open the gate and started looting and setting things on fire,” said Salmani, who heard about this on a phone call from his son.
Salmani’s family included his mother Akbari, his wife, two daughters and two sons. His older son lived on the fourth floor of the building with his wife, and the couple were not at home when the arson took place – they were at a hospital because Salmani’s pregnant daughter-in-law was in labour. “She delivered a baby girl today, one day after we lost everything,” said Salmani.
When the mob set fire to Salmani’s tailoring workshops on the first two floors of his building, the six labourers working there ran upstairs. Gradually, as the fires rose, the whole family and the labourers were forced to go to the roof, which was also billowing with smoke. “My mother was old and could not run or cope with all the smoke – she died in the house only,” said Salmani. “If I had been there, perhaps I would have been able to get her up to the roof.”
Salmani’s family was stuck on the roof for an hour, with smoke constantly billowing around them. From the roof, they shot videos of fires in surrounding areas. In one video, they can be heard saying, “Look, the Jai Shri Ram waale have returned”.
They were finally brought down from the roof by the police, who took them to Usmanpur police station, where Salmani was finally able to meet them.
“The police took 2.5 hours to reach our area after the violence started,” said Ismail. “They managed to disperse the mob for a while, but the mob was not scared of them – they just went in other lanes and continued attacking homes.” All the while, Ismail claimed that their Hindu neighbours and friends kept calling them and warning them to stay indoors.
At around 4 pm on Tuesday, some Muslims from Gamri ventured out to talk to the police personnel. “The police told one of the Muslims from my area that the mobs were going to get bigger and the police did not have the forces to contain them, so we should all leave for our safety,” said Ismail, who then gathered all his family’s identity documents and left for a relative’s house. “All the Muslims have left from there, and the updates we are getting from our Hindu neighbours is that the mobs are still roaming around.”

as you said, muslims disappearing is not a solution. The best possible state is when the bigotry towards each other is controlled and moderated. Given a free hand, hindus and muslims can never coexist on equal terms. Incompatible people with incompatible God(s) and culture. The india of the past appeared to be peaceful because riots were localized, and there was only one state news channel (which was famously showing Bobby movie during 1984 delhi ethnic cleansing). Now they have a platform to spread a local issue to the entire country. I suggest social media accounts to be linked with identity card. Orwellian state better than a perpetually chaotic state. Hindus and Muslims can continue to badmouth each other from their jhopar pattis/drawing rooms.
Tribalism is in human nature but more prevalent and visible in a poor and congested society like India. Since beginning its in the nature of Indian people (incl pakistanis) to be divided in castes, groups and ethnicities. If it wasn’t for religion, they will find something else to kill in the name of.
Lets assume all muslims disappear from India tomorrow, i am sure the hindus will be fighting amongst themselves or another entity. Such hinduvita extremists (and others for that matter) are lowest form of human evolution.
I Congrats BJP bhkts and Modi/Amit/Doval combo for achieving what India is facing today, and will face in coming years.
I said before and i say it again, this will have repercussions for India in coming days.
Tribalism is part of everyone's nature, just some societies have moved beyond it with good governance. If you watch Game of Thrones, that was based loosely on the War of the Roses, plenty of tribalism in there, but eventually civilisation won through. I think the main difference is that those societies in the west advanced organically, in the third world, you are getting illiterate savages suddenly being bombarded with all sorts of nonsense via social media which they have no ability to filter.
India had a rich tradition of eastern mysticism at one point. I don't know if that was just a pleasant myth, but westerners used to flock there for enlightenment.
Aren’t the premier league club following and this very Pakpassion forum, examples of Tribalism?
Difference is that in a civilised society people know where the boundaries and are not threatened for their survival in these tribal competitions.
Have been hearing this rubbish whenever there is communal unrest in India. That there's gonna be "repercussions" and civil wars and what not. Heard it during the Mumbai riots in the 90s , heard it during Gujarat '02 riots and I'm still hearing it.
May be it's just people projecting their wishes and pipe dreams with no touch with actual realities.
If you look at it that way, every 2 ways of doing the same thing can be labelled as incompatible with eachother. Why restrict this to God and religion?
Today they are killing in the name of religion, tomorrow they will find another cause. Fair and secular system in place (like in many western countries) is 1 solution to keep these idiots under control.
If India had convicted Modi and his hinduvita goons during Gujrat riots, sentenced Babri mosque demolition culprits, penalised Delhi police for covering up aggressors, things may ve been different. Unlike communist controlled and mostly homogeneous China, India may be too big and diverse to be governed as 1 entity. I dont see these kind of riots going away and sooner or later India will break into smaller states.
We have been hearing rubbish how India is this great secular society where there is no violence or communal tensions, only bollywood music and yoga. All the bad stuff comes from across the border, now that's not true is it? Propaganda only gets you so far before the glass shatters on your face. This is just the beginning.
As per my previous post: Pakistani agenda BJP this BJP that..
Have been hearing this rubbish whenever there is communal unrest in India. That there's gonna be "repercussions" and civil wars and what not. Heard it during the Mumbai riots in the 90s , heard it during Gujarat '02 riots and I'm still hearing it.

I don't know how Indians themselves seem to believe these myths. You see videos of Shining India 2020, Incredible India 2030, then back down to earth and we are getting walls built in Gujarat so foreign Presidents don't have to look at slums. Positive self image might all be well and good, but not if it's built on delusion.

Yeah watched that, another Indian journalist Rana Ayyub did lot of investigation and carried out the sting operation (for Tehelka) on Gujrat issue and specifically Modi's involvement. By the time she was done with investigation, Modi was elected as PM so Tehelka management refused to publish the story based on the data collected by her.
And they they say, Modi was declared innocent by courts.

The other side of the story.
This is sad man.
What the hell is Delhi police doing?
Man, this is horrific.
I haven't heard a single government official to do anything to de-escalate and bring communities together to end violence.
Does India have something equivalent of Rangers who are an arm of the armed forces to be called in during civilian unrest and/or humanitarian needs. Seems as if it is about time that the Rangers are called to end the violence. Any minute now Mr. Nazi Modi.
I am hearing reports that violence was started by anti CAA-NRC crowds where they pelted stones and killed a constable (Ratan Lal) and a protestor. Of course, the other side did a LOT of instigation prior to that.
Then CAA crowd went on a rampage.
Will have to wait for confirmation.
Need to find the **** and arrest them.
This is WHAT happens in a riot.
One ***** starts it and it spirals out of control.
Then each side takes the news that fits them and keeps harping at it.
Life is never black and white.
The other side of the story.
This is sad man.

In my opinion, it does not matter which group started the violence, it is government and elected officials job to not create an atmosphere that would not lead to violence. Sadly, BJP government has open multiple avenues to cause violence.
That is true.
There is a reason why EVERY neutral and reliable media is pinning the blame on BJP and not the anti CAA rioters (cos there will be anti social elements everywhere).
But as humans, we should seek the uncomfortable truth (no matter how jarring it is for our view), tackle it head on and accept it for 2 reasons:
1. It's the right thing to do.
2. It prevents propaganda and shifting of the narrative and deflection of the CORE issue here.
This is my view.
Here is an uncomfortable truth, has RSS ever been found guilty of any crimes against minorities by Indian government or courts?
Here's another uncomfortable truth:
Our judiciary is a scam (not entirely but mostly).
Another way to look at it is govt exerts way too much control during the investigation process so prosecution becomes hard.
People have been found guilty and arrested and given life sentences. Just that leaders will escape.
Foot soliders do get caught.

May I know the reason for this specific question in response to my answer above?
Just wanted to get honest opinion and highlight the facts that you have stated in your reply because we hear daily on this forum about Indian court exonerating government officials while facts going against the reason for exoneration.

Cue the attack on Rajdeep not having any credibility.
Here is another example, government of Pakistan and Army usually get criticized for at times negotiating with extremists groups in Pakistan, obviously they exist, exist in almost every country.
Majority fail to understand that is done to prevent violence and loss of life.
The difference between India and Pakistan (or other countries) is that Indian government is almost promoting violence against its fellow citizens for protesting against a passed law.
Oh pak army you can't live without it but you can't live with it eitherPakistani Army gets criticized for a lot of other extra curricular activities. Its a topic for another thread. Their actions create monsters who they are then forced to deal with.
Pakistan govt is a different case. They are the ones who are bound by so many factors. They have my sympathies.
Hi. Hope everyone is doing great.
I am not posting much here these days because of internet clampdown and my personal safety concerns as all of Kashmiri social media is on radar these days. But today i came to post something.
I want to tell our Indian posters who have followed my posts here since last few years that i told you so. I had said numerous times that major riots are in the offing in india given the poison that has been pumped into hindu veins. Infact among the illiterates, the poison was already there but they have now been emboldened beyond repair. This is only going to get worse. Riots in other parts of India arent even being reported. I read a hindustan times report about Khambat in Gujrat which has seen widespread attacks on Muslims in last few days with over 20k muslims fleeing the town. Barely any mainstream media coverage.
I am not here ro rejoice or boast that my prediction is coming true. I am really really concerned about whats unfolding. This wouldnt have happened if Indian muslims had shown some spine and stood for the rights of Kashmiris and screamed about what was happening in Kashmir. Instead they chose to remain silent and even support the hindutva brigade in what did in Kashmir. I remember Jamiat e ulema e hind leaders saying that, "we represent Kashmiri muslims and they are happy with every decision taken about them". They didnt support Kashmiris, they didnt even stay silent on the issue, they didnt just support Bjp in these decision, They went out of their way to mislead outsiders. Now they are being repayed for their bootlicking because facists wont differentiate between them and us because we are all muslims (even though they hate Kashmiris more). Kashmir model is now being applied on muslims across India just because they didnt say a word when Kashmiris were being silenced.
I thank everyone who supported Kashmir and continue to do so. The kind of events which have unfolded in recent past arent new for Kashmir. We have seen and faced such things since hundreds of years now. We are standing strong and our story has a long way to go before it reaches its logical end. (Just DM me if you wanna talk about the issue at length)
I seek your prayers and support. Love from Kashmir.

I think the politicians have won. Earlier I used to think that the common man doesn't care about these issues and only care about their own roti, kapda and makaan but lately I have realised the common man cares more about religious superiority and ego boost than basic necessities.
It isn't the fault of politicians it's the fault of public.
The politicians have programmed the public (across the subcontinent) to focus more on religious superiority rather than demand roti, kapra and makaan.
Because tomorrow if the public stands up and demands it from the politicians then that'll be the end of their political careers.
Good to hear from you brother, glad you are well.
If posting or using the internet puts you in danger, then you shouldn't.
You predicted it but so did I, it was clear this was coming.
I wrote on this forum 3/4 years before Modi was elected, he would become PM and introduce policies against Muslims which would lead to communal relgious violence.
India has been a ticking time bomb since Modi came into office, the time has just ran out.
Indian Muslims have only themselves to blame, not comdeming the brutality towards Kashmiris for decades, believing they are equal to the Hindu Indians.
Now they have to either rise up and defend themseleves or this could get so ugly and turn into nationwide violence.
It has nothing to do with Pakistan, India cannot touch Pakistan but only attack their own civillians.
Pakistani Army gets criticized for a lot of other extra curricular activities. Its a topic for another thread. Their actions create monsters who they are then forced to deal with.
Pakistan govt is a different case. They are the ones who are bound by so many factors. They have my sympathies.

Many Indians here were trying to rubbish such predictions as something that would never happen in India. But today they must be thinking that it was always coming. You cant even imagine the hatred MAJORITY of hindi speaking hindus have for muslims now. I am going out on a limb to claim their majority. Just see their comments on facebook posts, on twitter posts. You will want to break your screen. The pacifists are in an insignificant minority. And unlike previous riots, this isnt any isolated area where this problem is. The ideology is now widespread. They WILL treat it as a final battle against adharmi muslims. If not this year then next year. This is their SOP, act first and think about consequences later. Muslims of India should really think of how to be safe.
Thanks bro.

Quite sad to see that the largest democracy has been taken over by radicalized extremists.
Jinnah was and is correct, no matter how bad Pakistan situation gets but would never want to live under the rulers who are on a mission to take revenge in 2020 for Mughals to bring Islam in India 100's of years ago.
Thanks bro.

Back in 2002, Modi the Muslim Killer was a "nobody" now he and his bunch of terrorists can kill Muslims properly.
There is nothing more disgusting to me than people who defend these terrorist **** and their actions.
Apparently the judge who ordered the police to be investigated has been transferred to another state
I don't know about south but in our part it's pretty clear the mindset of the public. You can't blame journalists, politicians, police etc. The public actually wants a "Modi" to boost their ego or get a sense of artificial "victory".
Really?
Why am I not surprised?
This is how they operate.
Can you post the source?
Thambi, you should not jump to conclusions. That judge was only substituting for the chief judge's absence.
Ok. That's why asked for source.
Also judges cannot be transferred willy nilly, there is a long process and the judges collegium recommends it. Judiciary is well protected from executive tyranny. Any alliance between them is based on their own greed/mutual benefits and not because of the law.
Insha Allah. Thanks bro. We're surviving. We'll continue to survive because it comes naturally to us now after decades, if not centuries of conflict.Hello sir good to see you around these parts after a LONG time. Hope you and your family are doing well. Inshallah your problems will ease soon.
This is a sad state of affairs for a 200+ million population even in a large populated nation such as India. Indian Muslims have not gained any real political influence. Surely there should be some sort of all Indian Muslim party where one party can speak for so many people?
If not, they must defend themselves as is their moral right. You cannot risk your family being killed by these terrorists.
The Kashmiri brothers and sisters have had it much worse but still continue to oppose their brutality. You guys are very different to them.
Thanks. We're laying low. There has been a general FIR lodged against every social media user from Kashmir under UAPA. So you can understand what the state of affairs is. Thought police is has been let loose.Stay safe and take care of your family, nothing is more important than health and well being of loved ones.
Good to see you here bhai.
Hope you and your family are safe.

India is really going through hell, my prediction is that the country will split in the next 10,15 years if BJP remains in power. As in, the local Hindutva crowd is so radicalised, extremely worrying tbh.
The same Muslims who use to speak against Pakistan, most likely thinking now that Mr Jinnah was right!
