[VIDEOS] Has Haris Rauf proved himself to be a worthy member of the Pakistan side?

Rauf’s death bowling

Pakistan speedster Haris Rauf has been exceptional in the death overs in this World Cup. He has bowled four overs (two each against India and New Zealand) in the last five overs (16-20) of the innings, and conceded only 21 runs, one boundary and taken 4 wickets.

Haris’ career economy is 7.89 and has 23 wickets in overs 16-20 in T20Is, the most by any bowler since his debut in this format in January 2020. Overall, he has 33 wickets in T20Is, the second-most in the last couple of years and only behind Tabraiz Shamsi (38).

The Rawalpindi-born pacer made his debut against Bangladesh in Lahore in 2020 on the back of a fine season with Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. He grabbed 20 wickets in that season for the Australian club and was playing as a replacement for Dale Steyn who is also his idol.

Seriously this sums up your analysis. Him changing his pace suddenly from 150 to 130-135 kph on Sharjah track shows he has learnt and is more than capable of chocking batsman in the death overs.

Had he continued to bowl 150kph and get hit for more runs Mamoon would call him brainless for not changing up his pace, and call him the 2nd coming of Sami or Wahab. Catch 22, can't win with this guy.

Mamoon logic is first to bash the rock thrower who sing worthy of playing cricket. Then once Rauf performs well Mamoon changes his analysis to say the team is turning him into a slow spinner. Next match when Rauf bowls with complete control, in swinging Yorkers and takes a 5-fer Mamoon will return and say Rauf is very inconsistent because he’s not taking wickets the same way each time.

Rauf is a loose cannon who is always on the cusp of getting smashed. He has no control, no bowling intelligence - he just runs without any thought and throws rocks at the batsmen.

Every now and then, he might fluke a couple of good spells, but if Pakistan is banking on him to become a regular in the white ball teams, it is going to suffer a lot of thrashings.

Indian, English and Australian batsmen will rip him apart. I am waiting for the day the likes of Rohit, Kohli, KL Rahul, Dhawan, Pant, Pandya, Bairstow, Roy, Buttler, Warner, Finch etc. get hold of him.

It is best for Pakistan cricket in the long run if fans don’t put too much stock into performances against this South African team. However, it is not going to happen.

I am waiting too for them to get a hold of him…

Sad that Mamoon is waiting for our boy to get smashed by these superstars just so he can say " I told you so"
What a fan

Haris Rauf was most doubtful performer for Pakistan this world cup. But boy he delivered two memorable performances..
Expectations from him are much higher now..

Being T20 cricket, it is inevitable Rauf will get taken apart and then the same criticism will be circulated.

Not a fan of Rauf, but credit given for his last 2 performances.

In T20’s, you definitely need a good slower ball combination.

This is good stuff from the rock thrower. Rana

You know a bowler or batter is good whenever Mamoon makes it his agenda to look for any opportunity to disgrace him

I have patiently backed Rauf through and throughout. He will only get better with confidence. I just hope he doesn’t become overconfident like Hassan Ali did

Slower ball cutters at 78mph, that’s just -6mph in comparison to Hassan Ali’s average pace at full throttle. You can read Hassan’s slower ball from a country mile

He's having a good tournament so far, but the biggest improvement is, he seems to using his brain more and bowling with more discipline.

Mamoon is a strange person. You can criticise when a player performs badly or isn't learning but why not praise when they perform well. Obvious troll and the bait style comments. As mentioned previously, it seems like the setup now is providing more support and positivity to the players. Maybe it is rubbing off in their performances. Big Vern is probably a big plus. He was a lovely bowler.

The Pakistan quick who was playing second grade in Australia just three years ago
As Australia’s batters are dealing with Haris Rauf’s thunderbolts in the Twenty20 World Cup semi-final against Pakistan early on Friday morning (AEDT), they will be facing a bowler who was playing second grade in Sydney three years ago.

Dave Gilbert, the former Australian Test paceman and Cricket NSW CEO, presented Rauf with his Western Suburbs cap as president of the club.“We had to play him in the seconds because we had Ned Eckersley, who was with Leicester at the time, as our overseas player. We were terrified ‘Harry’ was going to kill someone,” Gilbert told the Herald and The Age. “He took six wickets, and we put him in first grade.”

Within a year Rauf was signed by the Melbourne Stars as an injury replacement, took a hat-trick in the Big Bash, and was whisked into Pakistan’s T20 team, where he has been a fixture ever since.

He’s Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in the current Twenty20 World Cup with eight, but growing up Rauf preferred football to cricket and only ever bowled with a taped tennis ball in street cricket games.

He was talked into taking part in an open trial with Pakistan Super League team Lahore Qalandars and, among the thousands who arrived to try their luck, was given one ball to impress. It was clocked at 148km/h, and he instantly became a member of the club’s academy.Through a connection with South African Paddy Upton, who was coach of the Sydney Thunder and Lahore Qalandars, the PSL team played a pre-season tournament in Sydney.

Then Thunder general manager Nick Cummins was sitting with Qalandars coach Aaqib Javed, the former Pakistan fast bowler, watching a match between the two teams when he was taken by how quick Rauf was bowling to the likes of Shane Watson and Mike Hussey.

“Aaqib explained that Rauf had never bowled with a cricket ball until he joined the Qalanders,” Cummins recalled.Rauf ended up joining Wests through local Pakistani connections and became an instant hit at the club, not only because of his ability to bowl fast but because of his genuinely affable nature.

“He was a lovely, sweet guy,” recalled Mark Ray, a former NSW state player and Tasmanian captain who was assistant coach with Wests at the time.

“I drove him around a bit helping out. He couldn’t speak much English, but he was always very appreciative.

“And he could bowl quick. The other players at the club couldn’t believe it when they first saw him at training.”

Ray had the same concerns as Gilbert when Rauf played his initial game with Wests in the second.

“I pulled him aside and explained that a lot of the players were still developing their game, so I suggested he bowl full at the stumps. Thankfully, he did.”

Rauf bowled for most of the first session without a break.

“He was so grateful for the opportunity to play that the captain couldn’t get the ball out of his hand,” Gilbert said.

The following season Cummins, who had become chief executive of Cricket Tasmania, flew Rauf in from Pakistan as cover for injured England fast bowler Tymal Mills with the Hobart Hurricanes.“He played a couple of club games for Glenorchy,” said Cummins, who then moved to Cricket Victoria as a senior administrator. “The Melbourne Stars needed a replacement for Dale Steyn, who was injured, so I rang Cricket Tas and asked if they were going to sign Rauf. They didn’t commit to him so we signed him for the Stars.”

Just before Christmas 2019 the Hurricanes experienced what they had missed. In his second BBL game, Rauf claimed 5-27 against the Hobart side to be player of the match in a thumping win.

A week into the new year he claimed a hat-trick against the Thunder and was promptly named in Pakistan’s T20 team, making his international debut 16 days later against Bangladesh in Lahore.

Rauf has claimed wickets in all five of Pakistan’s matches during this Twenty20 World Cup to help his team go through the group stage undefeated, including a player of the match 4-22 against one of the early fancies, New Zealand.

Rauf and his pace-bowling teammates pose a significant challenge to the fast finishing Australians.

Overall he had a good tournament - probably better than what most people expected from him.

There are still areas of his bowling that he can improve upon, but I'm sure he will have learnt so much from this experience.

I believe he's found his natural length during this tournament.

Most times, he was either too full or too wide or too inaccurate.

This tournament has allowed him to find that rhythm to bowl top of off-stump or back-of-a-length.

His slower ball has improved as well.

Just seems like someone who runs and want to bowl first without an iota of intelligence this works in domestic cricket and pyjama leagues but at the top level one need to use brain also in the SF the faster the bowler was more conveniently he was being spanked should have used his brain to mix it up but Alas

No doubt he justified his selection ahead of others for the T20 World Cup.

Bowled with some fire in his belly.

Has anyone else noticed how much his fielding has improved?

He’s a late bloomer and hasn’t played hard ball for long but he’s really committed and did some good stops during the World Cup.

Terrible bowler. Always on the cusp of getting smashed and completely losing the script. Should be dropped from all formats forever. Nothing more than a poor man’s Wahab.

Form is temporary but lack of class is permanent.

Currently he is a better T20I fast bowler than everyone in the Indian squad bar Bumrah.

Most probably better than the English fast bowlers too.

Not like we have a plethora of better pacers in the wait. We don't have that luxury. He had a better campaign than expected and that will land him a spot in the T20 side at least for a solid 2 years. As far as the other formats go, the decline of Abbas, and Amir's excuses have left Pakistan with no other option. PCB needs to find another fast bowler fast. Shaheen's leading the attack on his own at the moment and that will only put more strain on him if we drop Rauf.

I believe he's found his natural length during this tournament.

Most times, he was either too full or too wide or too inaccurate.

This tournament has allowed him to find that rhythm to bowl top of off-stump or back-of-a-length.

His slower ball has improved as well.

Agreed. That line & length is key for him.

Important to remember he is still fairly new to all this and the improvements he is making are coming along quite nicely. I would like to see him play a full season of FC because I think that will truly give him the reps he needs to be more consistent with his line & length.

Rauf has improved in this tournament. But whether it will continue is a matter to watch . Pakistan should not take any hasty decision soon
They should stick to this squad .

Haris taking a spectacular catch to get the crucial wicket of Pooran in this 2nd T20I:

He's turning out to be our most valuable T20 bowler.

I remember during the India v Pakistan match when he came onto bowl that I mentioned to the people who were sitting with me that this guy is a poor bowler and he is going to get tonked. When Harris was given the ball as a Pakistan fan you would get a bit nervous because he could bowl game changing overs....but they would put the opposition in front.

In the space of a few weeks its the complete opposite.

Now I think most of us want him to be given the ball ASAP and look out for his overs as being game changing in our favour

Pakistan pace sensation Haris Rauf revealed in a recent interview how Indian cricketers KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya supported him during the early part of his career and how they remembered it all during their recent meeting in Dubai for the India-Pakistan game at the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.

Talking to paktv.tv, Rauf recalled the time when he was net bowler for the Indian team ahead of India's Test against Australia in Sydney during the 2018/19 tour. The 28-year-old recalled that Rahul and Hardik gave him a lot of confidence and said that he would bowl at the international stage very soon.

Rauf also added that when the three had recently met for the blockbuster clash in Dubai on October 24, Hardik and Rahul had remembered him and that they were both happy for him.

“When I was net bowler for India, I had bowled to them in Sydney in the nets. So I had told them once that I would one day bowl to them in an international game. And both Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul had told me that I have the potential to bowl at international level. They gave me a lot of confidence. Then when I met them recently at the T20 World Cup, they remembered all our conversations. We had a discussion over it as well and they were really happy for me watching me play for Pakistan. When you play with good players you learn all the good things. I always try to learn good things from such players,” he said.

Incidentally, Rauf had dismissed Hardik in that game in Dubai, finishing with 1 for 25 in the match that helped Pakistan restrict India to 151. Pakistan had eventually beaten India by 10 wickets to script their maiden victory against their arch-nemesis in World Cup history.

Rauf had made his international debut for Pakistan in January 2020, in the T20I series against Bangladesh and earned his ODI cap in October that year. In September 2021, he was picked for the World T20 where he played a pivotal role for Pakistan in their unbeaten run in the group stage. He had picked four wickets against New Zealand to win the Man of the Match award in Pakistan's second game.

Rauf has appeared in 34 T20Is and 8 ODIs for Pakistan picking 41 and 14 wickets respectively.

Not been that great but did get RR wicket vs Multan.

3.4 overs 46 runs 1 wicket against MS.

Awful bowling, a distinct lack of planning and thinking.

Rauf sharing the new ball with Shaheen - good move.

Good to see Rauf opening today.

Think Zaman is better at the death where as Rauf started to go for a few too many neat the final overs.

Haris has been struggling to nail his yorkers this PSL so it makes sense to keep Zaman's over for the death

Rauf needs to get his yorkers sorted out.He can be a deadly bowler if he learns to bowl the right line and length. He bowls one or two bad balls in every over that is why he leaks runs.

One of the best fielders in Pakistan

What a performance by him today! He fought all the way for his side in a must win! Loved the energy and passion

Another gun barrel straight bowler riding his way due to the apparent mediocrity in the squad

H.Rauf has been bowling brilliantly at death from quite sometime but he’ll never be good enough for the people here, who are waiting for one bad performance to chop him off.
I believe that his pace will be useful in Aus for the upcoming WC!

Haris needs to bowl full, close to half volley but not half volleys. He looks very threatening with that length because of his good seam. No short balls unless they are over off stump.

Terrible cricket analyst. Always on the cusp of saying things against Pakistani players.

He has been bowling well for past couple of months now. Seems in good Rhythm, him and Shaheen need open together more often to form more of threatening partnership. They will always get a wicket or two early on most times.

What's most impressing is that he is proberly one of Pakistan better fielders and you don't normally expect that with Pakistan fast bowlers.

He gives it all as he is a been on a tough journey to represent Pakistan. You can never doubt Rauf's effort and commitment unlike the Mohammed Amir's of this world.

He's played the last couple of games well for Pakistan. He definitely looks a different bowler to the debut we saw against Bangladesh a couple years ago.

Excellent - fast and furious

He's not going to open the bowling in either Asia Cup or wt20. Would have been better to give Wasim the new ball instead.

Rauf outstanding today 3/16 - more of the same please Rauf :D

That last over from haris was momentum shifting over even with two misfieldings.

Haris is just gonna get better. He was just phenomenal with so much fire.

He should be able to bowl these speeds more often than not.

He is the fastest bowler in the world in Limited overs cricket.

That last over to Kohli was God damn impressive. Also, this has to be one of the fastest 4-over spell I've seen in a long time in t20is

I just can’t get over how much he’s improved as a fielder.

His bowling will always be hit and miss but if he’s consistently 150+ that’s rapid by any metrics.

Harris impressed in his debut season in domestic cricket in the 3 day format. I actually think he can be formidable for Pakistan in the red ball format, play the bhumrah role.

But is he interested in playing for Pakistan in test cricket? Can he handle the strain of playing all three formats?

Topping out at only 153? not good enough man! Need to get those 155ers out.

Our best fast bowler in the tournament

He turned up and bowled rockets against a rampant India in the 2nd match. He was brilliant throughout since then

Should have had a 4fer only to be let down by Shadab

He is still improving it seems. He could have Rajapaksa twice yesterday. The lbw appeal seemed to be out.

I don’t want to interrupt the bhangra but the fact that he is resorting to bowling 3-4 slower ones every over is not a good sign.

He was brought into the side as a speed demon and since he has failed in that role with flying colors and got smashed all over the park by nearly all teams, the team management is now molding him into a slow ball specialist.

I feel that it is only a matter of time before his slower ones are exposed as well. If you do not swing the new ball, you cannot be consistent.

We have seen that numerous times before. If Pakistani fans are excited over the prospect of him becoming a poor man’s Wahab, then so be it. Perhaps it is understandable because Pakistan is a small team now and it takes nothing for our fans to get excited and giddy.

He has also been quite lucky - I didn’t see many wicket taking deliveries. For example, the Guptill’s dismissal was a joke really.

Terrible bowler. Always on the cusp of getting smashed and completely losing the script. Should be dropped from all formats forever. Nothing more than a poor man’s Wahab.

Form is temporary but lack of class is permanent.

Lack of class is indeed permanent. Be it on the cricket field or on cricket forums.

Any word on how he humilitaed Kohli in that last over? Kohli had to run himslef out to get out of the misery.
