[VIDEOS] Is Babar Azam a softie?

He has and will always be a softie. He has absolutely no power game and the ability to hit the good balls at his will.

Imagine opening the innings, and playing the 20 overs and still not taking your team over the finish line. Not my goat.

Got the red ink though..

On a serious note, how does a player getting caught at long on doesn't result in the players "not" crossing over? Thought that must be basic. Talking about the Thisara dismissal here. Admittedly, I'm just going by text commentary and wasn't able to watch the match.

Very poor innings once again. It looks like at times he just plays to bat and not to win the game. Right from the 1st ball it was as if he already had given up.

Really pathetic.

Reached a 45-ball half century when the required rate was 13.

The audacity of some of the fans on this forum is :facepalm

With Babar we have arguably the best limited overs batsman for Pakistan ever! And I'm quite confident he will end up as one of the best Pakistani test batsman as well. Being a mediocre cricket team we are we should really be happy with what we have rather than throwing blind criticism for the sake of it. Atleast criticise constructively.

Whilst I agree Babar has not featured in some great chases he is atleast trying his best with innings like in SAF and WC game vs NZ. In both of these chases Babar had an able batsman at other end supporting him in the chase. With the rise of Rizwan and hopefully Fakhar we might start seeing some stable batting positions for Pakistan that would help in Babar in making some run chases in future.

On today's performance Babar clearly was going hard at the start and not timing the ball at all. Also it was noted today that he is falling over and being a candidate for lbw at start of innings like he was against SAF in home T20s. These are things he should improve upon.

The ball was hit hard to the fielder, the ball had little air time. There’s no way the batsmen would’ve crossed over had they ran.

Thanks for the explanation, I was just going by cricbuzz commentary and it felt odd that they never crossed over to a catch at long on.

This is the problem with Azam, I may be wrong to Comment because I've only seen the scorecard, still this is what separates him from great or legendary players.

He doesn't win games even if he is there till the end. Not a good sign at all. Babar should be more dissappointed than anyone else.

he is disappointed that he missed out on his 100 @ 125 SR

The game was almost over for Karachi when Babar complted his half century. 51 runs in 47 balls that too at the end of over 14th.

As always his fans will look at final score and put blame on remaining batsmen.

I want Babar to do well, so I will not say everything's fine. There definitely is room for improvement for Babar, especially once he has faced 10 balls.

However, posters here are being super harsh on him. He is playing after a long break and with all these protocols, it is not easy to get into the game mode straight away. He was rusty like many other players. As the innings progressed, he started showing signs of fluent batting that he is known for.

I strongly believe that he will improve his game (and SR too, ofcourse) as the league goes on. He is once-in-a-lifetime batsman who is potentially ATG across all formats, let's not chide him for just one innings.

Surely he can't keep playing for his scores in the name of "making sure we play 20 overs"

Every player was rusty and not a single fluent inning was seen and that is understandable under these circumstances and we should cut some slack it's first match, I'm sure as the tournament progressed he will show his class

He was probably looking for others to do the hard hitting while he hanged around but it didn’t pay off.

Hashim Amla 2.0 in white ball cricket.

Zero impact, zero ability to grab the game by the scruff of its neck and run with it.

This innings basically defines Misbah's LOI career. Fans who just look at the scorecard and conclude that he was the best batsman on the day are the reason why Misbah had such a long career!

You can't score a 47 ball 50 when your team is 93/3 (or something) in a freakin T20! Picking up your strike rate at the end when the game is already lost doesn't do $#it for your team! .

Reminded me of Mohali when Misbah started to hit boundaries long after the game was over!

Scorecard analysts need to get better understanding of the game before commenting. This was an absolutely trash innings where he was wanting others to do the hardworking while he tags along.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, playing the role of "an anchor" is the easiest job in modern day cricket. Misbah wasn't the "crisis man" he was made out to be! He relished that role because it allowed him to tuk tuk his way to useless 60s and 70s while always looking at the other end for acceleration. Babar did the same today and his team paid the price for it.

Poor innings!

Good post but I think because Pakistanis have been burnt so much by Misbah during his playing days that they, including myself, are a little too sensitive against these kind of innings.

I'm sure Babar is going to improve as he plays more.

Got it. I understand your reservations.

Nevertheless, Babar is a special player and you have to be patient with him to overcome his flaws. I am sure he is aware of them and is working hard to fix them.

Pakistan’s fan base has the same problem as pre-WWI Imperial Russia.

It is better than most but not the absolute elite.

If I had a penny for everytime somebody brought up the WC chase of 230-odd against New Zealand a few years ago...

Kohli/Williamson/Smith have dozens of those knocks to show, all of them forgotten and not propped up as a defense many years after the fact.

It rings a similar bell to fans supporting Umar Akmal for years on end, constantly talking about some random ODI 100 against Sri Lanka he had hit very early on in his career.

Switched on the PSL game yesterday just because he was batting and it was a hopeless situation. Chuckled at how he somehow remained non-out at the non strikers during the last over. 95% of fans would have predicted a similar scenario.

He is a wonderful player but has his limitations. I don't think he is soft or weak, just lacking in certain departments.

Babar Azam epitomises the lack of talent Pakistan has. There is no one else to replace him despite his shortcomings. His inabilities could be masked easily if there were guys who could accelerate in the middle and death overs. This culture of saving one’s wicket has been brought by Misbah , can’t really blame him because there was a time when Pak team was getting bundled before 50 overs 7/10 times they batted. Sadly that approach trickled down to the future generations. There are either Hacks or guys who play just to score their own runs.
Rashid khan is an amazing bowler , his figures in recent matches are a testament to how mediocre Pak cricket is. He is treating these guys like gully cricketers. He isn’t even being challenged enough to keep him interested in this league. Misbah , while a very humble and honest guy , needs to be kept away from the team. His approach and the message he sends across is just not good enough.

Sad to see Babar not even having the ability to play a clutch innings against a substandard bowling line up.

And then we have people rating him higher than Kohli lmao

Anyone who refuses to accept that Babar is a timid player is simply living in denial.

And stop flexing that 230 odd chase vs New Zealand on a slow pitch. If he was chasing 320+, he would have bottled it even if it was on a road.

He has never won Pakistan a match while chasing a big total. He even bottled it against Zimbabwe few months back.

Clear signs of a mentally weak batsman.

I don't even know why Babar is being so timid in his T20 batting? He's already proven he can play at a high SR. No one's going to crucify him if he has a few failures in the format lol.

He should go out and be fearless, have a bit of fun and smack the ball around. The type of batting he's producing is great for ODI cricket and that's still his best format.

Match losing innings are unforgivable in international cricket especially for a great batsman. I said in the 4th over of the KK v MS game that MS would rather not get Babar out because they will win. And guess what? Babar was not out and his team lost.

Nevertheless, he is obviously Pakistan’s best batsman and people are overreacting. Just needs to stop playing these terrible innings. It’s T20 cricket. It’s ok if you get out

Good knock today from Babar. Not insane but good. Looks like he learnt from his previous match losing innings just like he did in South Africa.

This innings only shows that he was rusty in previous match after few months of play. Please have some patience before jumping on the bandwagon to slay everytime.

The other day Babar opens the innings chasing 170 odd. Plays an awful knock. Remains not out. His team loses the game. His fans defend him by blaming everyone but him.

Today Munro opens the innings chasing 190+. Remains not out. Sees his team home.

There is no excuse for match losing knocks. Credit to Babar today for playing a good knock but a great batsman should never play a match losing innings like Babar has played twice in recent times.

Lol scoring 81 at great strike rate is not what lost the match, the other team batted better and it was not just Munro but Iftikhar too, just like it was Zadran as well not just Babar that posted a good total. Cricket is a team game and one player does not win or lose match even in T20 format. Bowlers and batters both play their part, and luck plays a part too if Munro or Ifti got caught and Babar did not the result may have been different.

Read what I wrote carefully. I said he lost the game in the match against Multan. He played well in this match.

Is Munro has consistent at Babar? No other T20 batsman scores a 50 every other innings off of 37 deliveries, which is a SR of 135. Azam is single handedly carrying a batting side and getting them good first innings totals. It is not his fault other batsmen are not consistent enough and the bowling at KK is terrible.

So when you say player should never play match innings like he has done twice in recent times, which is the other inning you referring to?

Karachi kings have zero quality bowlers....
190 was a decent amount of score to defend..
There bowlers are rubbish...
Whatever they achieved so far it's becoz of their bating... I bet if their batsmen will score 300 runs in 20 overs.. still their bowlers will let the opponents to easily chase it..
I don't know what there think tank was doing when drafting for players was going..
So stop blaming Babar...

I don't care about what Babar does or doesn't do in the PSL. His legacy will be defined by international cricket accomplishments, not a second rate T20 league.

My biggest concern is in 4.5 years of Test cricket, I can only recall perhaps two knocks that genuinely influenced the course of the match. Otherwise he's mostly flattered to deceive.

Seems he could have a broken bone on the foot!

Out for 0 against Wahab.

Golden duck for Babar, and perhaps an injured foot:

if this SOFTIE will give me 9-10K+ ODI runs at 57-58 average than i will let him be a softie ...

Must say I don't really understand why Babar is getting so much hate. Easily one of the elite bats going around in all formats. IMO will most likely end up as the best bat produced by Pakistan in both red and white ball cricket. Top notch.

This is the problem mate, every batsman these days who does reasonably well is termed as the best ever batsman. All time great. Best across formats, etc. This is the reason they also end up getting a lot of hate as well, people who are watching cricket since just 10-12 years have unrealistic expectations and are headed for dissapoimtment when their hero's don't do as good.

Yeah hope he doesn't read too much into this stuff. Obviously there are areas to work on but watching him bat you just know that he can go far.

We wanted him to win matches and he keeps playing those match losing innings so religiously, lol.

In a virtual Quarter Final, he's playing at 100 sr after 12 overs lol. Shahzad must be proud

Babar Azam is a brand in PSL. His slow batting doesn't affect his stature in PSL as he knows he is too big a cricketer to affect his stature with these match losing knocks in PSL.

It is like Virat Kohli in IPL. He scores 400 runs every year at strike rate of 120-125 but this will not have any effect on his stature and neither would franchises leave him till his retirement.

Not really "like" Virat. Even if Kohli plays slow in IPL, he can win matches in T20Is. Babar cannot.

Really got a lot of freebies today. Else would've been batting on SR of 80-90.
He really needs to work on his power hitting.

7 50s for Babar in 11 innings in PSL 2021. I bet all have been match losing ones. This guy keeps embarassing himself and losing games for his team

Babar Azam in #PSL6:

24(20)
62(54)
90*(60)
5(5)
77*(47)
85*(63)
81(54)
0(1)
54(44)
23(25)
53(45)

7 fifty in 11 matches - The consistent Babar Azam.

Karachi Kings lost the Eliminator 1 courtesy of another statpadding knock by Babar azam who made 53 from 45 out of 175

Not really "like" Virat. Even if Kohli plays slow in IPL, he can win matches in T20Is. Babar cannot.

What goes in Kohli's favour is that in T20Is, his strike rate is 138. For Babar, it is only 129. Moreover, Kohli has a player of series award in WT20s too. But this PSL performance will not change much for Babar.

IPL/PSL can enhance your stature in T20s if you are magnificent in T20 leagues but not downgrade.

In white ball cricket he's turning into one of the biggest stat padders of all time.

Zero impact just a lot of irrelevant runs.

His batting template is fix -

Score 45 off 42-43 balls, then hit 2-3 boundaries. Make it around 45 ball 55, or 48 ball 60 runs. So people don't question his fifty.

Then try to hit few more, and once in a while make it 55 ball 70 or 60 ball ~80. And his fans look at final score card and hail him greatest of all time.

Babar expects all hitting to be done by other batsmen. His initial 45 balls create pressure on other batsman. They end up throwing their wicket to increase run rate. Team ends up scoring below par.

But anyone looking at final score would say, Babar was not getting support from other batsman, so he has to stay to take team to respectful score.

He's not a softie he's just incapable of accelerating on slow wickets like in UAE. Reason is he cant muscle the ball.
There's a difference between his strike rates from pak leg and abu dhabi leg. That wicket in SA suited his game even more where he scored a 50 ball hundred

Take away Azam's 50+ score and KK end up with 110 runs. So no, clearly not a softy but a guy who single handedly carries the batting. The issue is, KK have not invested in world class bowlers and they need better strikers of the ball in their side to complement Babar scoring at 135.

I would also say, what lost them the game was 2 dropped catches, which cost 7 runs in the final over.

In t20s probably. Needs to really step up in the high pressure games in all formats consistently though.

This guys is worse then russel westbrook when it comes to padding stats.. but atleast westbrooks tripls dubs lead to 75% wins.... babars 50s lead to 75% loses...

Another awful T20 knock. I will reiterate. I do NOT want to see this garbage from him in a green shirt.

Babar should watch todays Pant's innings to learn how to preserve your own wicket and score rather than crumble under pressure.

What's up with Babar Azam's speaking skills? He cannot put two sentences properly in URDU, yes not even in Urdu.

Yes, his body language is always down, and cannot speak English. But, why does he look so unsettled even while speaking in Urdu.

Saj MenInG Is his MT Punjabi (since he's from Punjab)?
