Indians may have a bigger impact than ever on this IPL, writes Sanjay Manjrekar

PL Deshpande, the brilliant Marathi writer, had noted that cricket is more a subject of conversation than a sport played on the field. He was so right. Just hear the IPL chatter going around. The “neutrals” are assessing every team, analysing their strengths and weaknesses specific to conditions in the UAE. The loyalists are pushing their case, how their team can win no matter what the conditions.

That the whole of IPL, a total of 60 matches, will be played in the UAE makes this — the conditions — the moot point. We may all get a bit of a surprise if the pitches turn out to be different from what we are expecting; historically, the three venues—Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi—are known for sluggish pitches with low bounce. These are your “average score of 155” kind of pitches. In India, in the last two IPLs, the average 1st innings score was about 170. Never has 200 been successfully chased in a T20I in the UAE. So it’s likely that this IPL may be played in third gear. Which means, teams are suddenly looking at themselves and thinking, do we have the arsenal for this kind of challenge? The franchisees picked the squads in December 2019, assuming that matches were going to be played in India.

For example, KKR packed their team with quicks, letting go of one of their seasoned spinners, Piyush Chawla, as Eden Gardens has become a seam-friendly venue now. How do they deal with the new situation?

This is unfortunate for some teams, and I wonder, if as a special concession, franchises could have been allowed to add or replace two players to suit the change of venue. Assuming that pitches are going to be slow and of low bounce, it’s going to be tough hitting through the line, the staple shot of many batsmen. Also, apart from the mystery spinners, finger spinners too may play a bigger role.

Advantage CSK

When you look at the teams through this lens, CSK start with an advantage with their selection; Chepauk, CSK’s home, has been a turner for a while now, so they picked players who would thrive there. Chawla is such a welcome addition to their team. This is a spin attack that looks perfectly suited for the UAE; they may be able to get more out of Ravindra Jadeja as a bowler too.

Such conditions are also in Dhoni’s comfort zone. On slow turning pitches, no one captains better than MS. That he also has an experienced batch of Indian batsmen proficient on such pitches, make them strong contenders. The only worry for CSK—and for saying this I will have to bear the wrath of their passionate fans—is the career stage of their key players. Most are in the twilight of their careers. Dhoni has amazingly managed to still extract winning results from them—owning their identity as “Dads’ Army”—but one more year of the same may be stretching it.

MI best on top gear

Playing in third gear is CSK’s way. But that’s why, of late, MI have troubled them the most. Because no one does top gear like MI, with Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard in their midst. They look a bit thin when it comes to spin, but Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar, a fine wrist spinner, aren’t bad additions. Don’t forget this is the team that has Jasprit Bumrah!

KXIP’s strong batting

Kings XI have a wonderful batting line-up for the conditions, led by the in-form KL Rahul who is as explosive against spin as he is against pace. This is a team with a good bunch of Indian players—Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair and Sarfaraz Khan to name a few. They also have Glenn Maxwell, who, when he explodes, can devastate any opposition. As for their bowling, it’s not formidable. They will depend a lot on Afghanistan’s Mujeeb-ur Rehman.

Capitals look solid

When you look at DC and visualise them playing in the UAE, their batting packed with young, talented, successful, and self-confident Indian batsmen like Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant with Shikhar Dhawan leading from the front, you look at them as a force to contend with. They’ve got a strong bowling line up as well, with Amit Mishra, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, and Sandeep Lamichhane forming a strong spin quartet. Throw Kagiso Rabada in the mix and watch them make their way to the play-offs.

Pace heavy KKR

KKR, as mentioned earlier, are hamstrung with a squad picked mostly for seam conditions, so their battery of fast bowlers will be a huge gamble in the UAE. Andre Russell will have to be fit enough to bowl four overs to prop up their bowling. Sunil Narine will again have to be their spearhead. As for Kuldeep Yadav in the UAE? Well, I am not sure how he will do there; as a classical slow wrist spinner he relies a lot on bounce, doesn’t he? On the batting front, there’s the ever-dependable Dinesh Karthik, but Shubman Gill and Eoin Morgan will have to have sensational seasons for KKR to be front runners. I know they have Russell, but this IPL may not be one where the big hitters make as much impact. Gayle by the way, has T20 centuries everywhere in the world barring the UAE.

Royals have Smith too

RR is such a nice team, so likeable. I know they want to be more than just that, but when you assess them, you don’t get the impression you are looking at a champion team. Shreyas Gopal and Mayank Markande as frontline spinners do not exude confidence, while the jury is out on Stokes as a batsman in IPLs. But they do have perhaps the best T20 batsman in the world on current form: Mr Jos Buttler. Then they have Steve Smith, who is improving as a T20 batsman.

Love Sunrisers

Love SRH! A team you would term as street smart, and this reflects in their selection, what with Siddharth Kaul and Sandeep Sharma two hardened, gritty pacers used to bowling on pitches like the ones in the UAE. In batting they have the most consistent batsmen ever in the IPL, David Warner. He is versatile too. Barring the last T20 fifty vs Australia, Jonny Bairstow looks low on confidence. It will not be easy for him to find form, but in Kane Williamson they have a class batsman along with the more self-confident Manish Pandey, two batsmen ideal for 150 par score games. Add Rashid Khan, Shahbaz Nadeem and Mohd Nabi and you are looking at serious play-off contenders.

That leaves us with RCB. They simply do not have a great mix of players. Much of the impetus of winning the title is found at the auction tables. RCB, obviously, have the X factor with Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Yuzvendra Chahal, but then they have had them for the last few years now. Let’s hope with Aaron Finch by Virat’s side, they can conjure up some magic, like they did towards the end of the last IPL. And yes, looking at Finch’s form at the top for Australia, he must open for RCB.

Finally, this IPL is likely to be very “Indian” in nature. Indian players may have a greater impact on it than they have ever had before. As for me, how bold or foolish of me to be making predictions about a T20 tournament! But then, I also think we have been given a neck so that we can stick it out sometimes.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were left with a big hole to fill as veteran batsman Suresh Raina decided to head back home for 'personal reasons' and rule himself out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 season. While there's been no official announcement from CSK as far as Raina's replacement is concerned, the name of England hard-hitter Dawid Malan has been linked with the franchise.

As per a report in Inside Sport, Malan has impressed many in CSK team management and initial discussions have already begun. A final decision on whether to rope in Malan or not, however, is yet to be taken by the franchise.

“These are just discussions, nothing has been finalized as such. Malan is a very accomplished T20 player. He is also a left-hander like Raina. But team management hasn’t taken any final call on whether to call for Raina’s replacement or not’,” an anonymous CSK team source was quoted as saying.

Malan recently became the No. 1 batsman in T20I rankings, replacing Babar Azam after the conclusion of the T201 series between England and Pakistan. Malan was one of the finest performers for England in the T20Is, scoring a total of 129 runs including a 66-run knock in the 1st T20I.

The top-order batsman was ranked fourth in the T20I rankings ahead of the series but made a significant leap, courtesy his performance against Pakistan. Much like Raina, Malan also bats at No. 3 and is a left-hander like the veteran Indian batsman.

Malan had earlier told that he has held talks with one of the Big Bash League (BBL) franchises for the upcoming season but nothing has been finalised yet.

“There has been some contact with one of the clubs,” Malan had told ESPNCricinfo. “That’s still ongoing at the moment so hopefully we can finish and finalise that soon and hopefully that can get announced. I don’t know if I’m allowed yet [to say which club], so I’ll sit on the fence with that one.”

Malan's stocks have risen dramatically because of his performance against Pakistan and much like the Super Kings, there would be other franchises looking to rope in the 33-year-old.

The CSK squad, meanwhile, has been depleted not just with the absence of Raina but also Harbhajan Singh - who also opted out of the league because of 'personal reasons'.

I don't know how this tournament will go off playing in empty stadium in dubai. It is the packed stadium and its atomosphere that made IPL what it is.

Eoin Morgan and Pat Cummins will be available for Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL opener on September 23 after authorities in Abu Dhabi have agreed to shorten the quarantine period from 14 to six days, according to franchise CEO Venky Mysore.

The Royals have put up some great training videos focussing on range hitting by young Indian blokes.

Indian fans starved of any cricket coverage since March, school kids at home with no pressure of getting up in the morning for school (online classes start at 8.30-9 am), most matches starting at 7.30 pm India time, cinemas closed, shopping complexes still running at 30-40% footfalls - all this points to record viewerships for this IPL.

Look at those YouTube videos being put up by franchises, generating millions of views within a couple of days. They have to manage the bio bubbles well strictly following the SOPs and we will have a great tournament.

Not only indians.. every other cricket fan in the world from all cricket playing nations are going to lap up this season of IPL with much enthusiasm..

Just because cricket fans around the world are starved to hell..

I guess even pakistan cricket fans are going to much be enticed by this year's IPL (if it's broadcasted there)

You may be right. When good food is not available people do like to fill their stomach with as much junk food as possible which is not good for health. :inti

I think Pakistani fans have watched enough cricket in UAE without crowd that they won't be too excited for this year's IPL. IPL needs crowd, cheerleaders, glamour and Bollywood celebrities to make their product relevant for their part time cricket viewers. Rest of the world doesn't care about IPL anyway. :inti

There is no point in having the IPL in UAE. Won't be the same. Take it from someone who has watched plenty of games in the UAE.

Probably gonna catch IPL after quite a while due to no cricket for so long.

Welcome to the dark side!

We are out of cookies on account of covid-19. Inconvenience is regretted.

Lol, I followed a bit to see the youngsters(mostly Delhi buying em) and did watch it in college...just over the years when there was so much cricket I didn't have to watch it but now lol need to see..

Have to check how much hotstar cost for sports pack.. last year it was 399 (or 299) for 1 year..

Worth buying considering it also covers next years IPL too..

Have to check how much hotstar cost for sports pack.. last year it was 399 (or 299) for 1 year..

Last year I subscribed to yearly package for C$ 79.99 that included everything(internationals and IPL). Now, I have been hearing that IPL will only be available on Hotstar plus? Is that true? I’m going to be really mad if this jokers ask to pay more.

Disney have been screwing up lot of N. American subscribers for their stupid Disney and Disney plus idiocy. Hate them...

I did check on the Indian subs prices, but not valid for Canadians customers. If I could’ve renewed my subscription for that price($30) then I would’ve done so by now. Canadians have to pay additional $34.99 to upgrade( I think) on top of $79.99 which I paid last year. Just ripping of paying customers. Not going to renew it again for sure. IPTV is going to be my alternate option now( much cheaper)

Would love that deal. I wonder if someone buys a sub in India and then can access it in Canada?

I have bought Netflix for friends in first world countries from here in India. Cheap ******** earn in dollars but save in rupees.

Get someone you trust in India to buy you hotstar+Disney. Its peanuts.

IPL returns to Sky Sports in 2020 as part of a three-year contract

Customers will be able to watch all 60 of the matches exclusively live on Sky Sports.

Good news for IPL fans in Britain.

Btw, Sky don't telecast all games of their own Vitality blast T20 league but will show all IPL games. Just shows which league is the real boss :inti:

Anyways I don't have television and neither hotstar subscription but Iam going to watch it for free because I will watch at my grandparents house 😝.

Vitality is decent but, is just their normal T20 domestic competition and also it has 18 teams so its not possible to show every single match. The hundred is meant to be their premier T20 league.

Anyways I don't have television and neither hotstar subscription but Iam going to watch it for free because I will watch at my grandparents house 😝.

You can use ghd sports for free but it consumes more data 😝😝

You maybe right. I was checking online and for Canadian subs, Disney+ and Hotstar are totally different, but they seem to be one in India. So, I highly doubt it would work here.
As I said, Disney is root cause for Hotstar asking more money now for IPL.

Thanks. It's only good when you are on Wifi because in India mobile data packs are once again going to get costly.

U can setup a broadband,I think Jio is providing their broadband at ₹2500 with setupbox and without setup box it is at ₹1500,their plans are also cheap starting at ₹400 with 18% GST.

Have to check how much hotstar cost for sports pack.. last year it was 399 (or 299) for 1 year..

Does Hotstar also air loads of annoying, repeated and unbearable advertisements which takes I believe half the runtime of a match during the live broadcast of matches like the way the television channel does ?

Oh yeah. Every second of possible advertising time is used. It is what it is.

It would be so amazing to have a choice like a YOUTUBE has with its premium version which removes advertisements, a hotstar should also bring this feature in IPL but would it attract more subscribers maybe yes not sure though

I highly doubt IPL would ever be broadcasted on YouTube. As long as Hotstar have the web broadcast right, we will never have IPL on YouTube.

Chennai Super Kings batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad, who tested positive for Covid-19 last month, remains in isolation and is unlikely to be available for the team’s IPL opener against Mumbai Indians on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said the India A batsman is doing “absolutely fine” but has not yet got the BCCI’s clearance to join the team’s bio-bubble.

“Ruturaj has still not been cleared by the BCCI medical team and is in isolation. He is unlikely to be available for the first match. We are expecting him back in the (bubble) in the next couple of days and he is doing absolutely fine,” Viswanathan told PTI.

Thirteen members of the CSK contingent tested positive for the virus last month and two of them were players - Gaikwad and Deepak Chahar. Chahar, along with 11 others, has recovered and resumed training after clearing his mandatory two tests.

Gaikwad too underwent two tests on Sunday and Monday, the results of which are not known. After clearing the Covid test after the 14-day quarantine, a player is also needed to undergo a cardiovascular and lung function test to ensure he is fit to train.

Gaikwad is seen as Raina’s replacement in the team after the latter pulled out of the tournament and flew back home due to personal reasons. Senior spinner Harbhajan Singh has also withdrawn due to personal reasons.

Visawanthan said the team has not not decided on their replacements yet.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has tied up with UK-based company Sportradar, which will offer its "integrity services" to prevent betting and other corrupt practices during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) through its Fraud Detection Services (FDS). With the 13th Indian Premier League being held behind closed doors, the challenge for the Board's Ajit Singh-led Anti-Corruption Unit is very different as there has been a surge in betting-related frauds even during some of the state unit's leagues, and it's expected to increase manifold during the lucrative event.

"Yes, BCCI has inked a deal with Sportradar for this year's IPL. They will be working closely with the ACU and offer their integrity services," an IPL source confirmed the development to PTI.

"Sportradar has very recently red flagged at least half a dozen games in Goa football league which came under fixing cloud. They have also worked with FIFA, UEFA and various leagues across the globe," the source added.

The BCCI ACU, in recent times, tracked unusual betting patterns during the state T20 leagues, including the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), as a major betting company stopped taking bets after unusual bets were being placed.

According to Sportradar, Fraud Detection System (FDS) "is a unique service that identifies betting-related manipulation in sport. This is possible due to the FDS's sophisticated algorithms and constantly maintained database of odds which are leveraged for the purpose of detecting match-fixing."

It is believed that the company tracks the odds and movements of at least 600 independent bookmakers to detect anomalies in betting patterns. It processes around 5 million data sets per day.

It is understood that apart from bookies and possible corruptors, who will look to approach players and support staff online, the advent of multiple fantasy gaming companies will also keep the world's richest cricket board on tenterhooks.

"Fantasy gaming is not exactly betting in its traditional sense but the element of gambling does exist. So it's a good thing that BCCI is engaging with a company that works on betting related corruption in sport," a BCCI veteran said.

An interesting aspect of fraud detection is the mathematical algorithm that is used to study betting patterns.

It is a "sophisticated model" which monitors live betting on offer during an event.

"There are 25 live alerts, which instantly identifies irregular betting in the marketplace. The mathematical model uses calculated odds, which runs alongside bookmakers' odds, in order to highlight if the odds during a specific minute or time is out of line, and therefore, potentially suspicious," the Sportradar website stated under its ''25 Live Alerts'' section.

I highly doubt IPL would ever be broadcasted on YouTube. As long as Hotstar have the web broadcast right, we will never have IPL on YouTube.

They did try it in 2010. Was a horrible show and then the idea was dropped. The picture quality was poor and the consistency in the feed was lacking with too many technical glitches.

IPL is bigger and better than bilateral T20I cricket and on par with the WT20.

This is going to be great and I am looking forward to it. However, there is no doubt that UAE is an underwhelming place to play cricket.

Chris Silverwood wary of England player burnout in Indian Premier League bubble after short break

Chris Silverwood has urged England's IPL-contracted players to stay in touch with him during the tournament to minimise the risk of burnout.

Eleven English players have been signed for this year's IPL, which begins live on Sky Sports Cricket on Saturday in the UAE after being postponed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

That total includes seven players who exited the bio-secure bubble at Emirates Old Trafford in the wake of England's 2-1 series defeat - among them captain Eoin Morgan and paceman Jofra Archer - who will now enter the IPL bubble, where similarly strict protocols are in place.

England have carefully monitored the mental and physical health of their players over the unprecedented summer, allowing individuals to exit the bubble at particular times providing the correct COVID-19 protocols were followed before their return.

Silverwood - with one eye on the 2021 T20 World Cup - says he has no trouble with his players taking part in the IPL despite the quick turnaround from the international summer but stressed that the ECB still has a duty of care to each individual.

"It's their decision really," the England head coach said. "Obviously, the contracts are good for them but equally looking ahead, we've got a T20 World Cup coming up - the more high-class T20 they can play and experience we can get into them, I think can only be a good thing for us.

"The one thing that I have encouraged is that they keep talking to us; we need to make sure that they don't burn out as well."

Archer was obliged to isolate for five days in July after making an unauthorised visit to his home in Hove after the first Test against West Indies and Silverwood conceded the fast bowler has not been alone in finding life in the bubble tough at times this summer.

"It has been difficult. I think Jofra has found the fact that we've been locked up difficult at times and he's not the only player - quite a few have - but unfortunately it's where we are and we've got to do it," Silverwood said.

"We've mixed up the coaches so the guys get to work with different people. It's that juggling act of keeping people fresh in their minds and trying to get them out of the bubble whenever we can."

Silverwood echoed comments from Morgan, saying the successful completion of England's summer schedule without a recorded case of coronavirus inside bio-secure 'bubbles' at Emirates Old Trafford and the Ageas Bowl is a blueprint for other countries to stage matches amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The former bowler said despite the "strange times", the decision to name separate squads for white-ball and red-ball cricket had not only allowed England to pick from a wider pool of players but also for his assistant coaches Paul Collingwood and Graham Thorpe to experience time in charge.

Silverwood said: "We're always looking forward and we've had a brilliant opportunity throughout the summer to look at other people as well because we haven't been able to field our strongest squad all the time in white-ball. We've always got an eye looking forward."

[VIDOES/PICTURES] The IPL 2020 (19th September - 10th November) Tournament Thread

After the tournament opener on Saturday, Dubai will host its first game on Sunday when Delhi Capitals take on Kings XI Punjab followed by the third match on Monday between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The IPL action will shift to Sharjah on Tuesday, 22nd September where Rajasthan Royals will host Chennai Super Kings.

There will be 10 double headers with the first match starting at 3:30PM IST and 2:00PM UAE time. All evening matches will start at 7:30PM IST and 6:00PM UAE time. In all, 24 matches will be held in Dubai, 20 in Abu Dhabi and 12 in Sharjah.

Venues for the playoffs and the Dream11 IPL 2020 final will be announced later.

England and Australia cricketers are expected to be available for their respective Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises right from the start of the tournament. This follows a reduced 36-hour quarantine period, instead of six days, for the 21 cricketers who are coming to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from the United Kingdom (UK) at the conclusion of the limited-overs series between England and Australia.

A franchise CEO, however, informed that players going to Abu Dhabi will have to undergo a six-day quarantine period. It means that Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) Eoin Morgan, Pat Cummins and Tom Banton will have to be in isolation for six days.

For the players to be based in Dubai, an official of a franchise told The Indian Express: “They (England and Australia cricketers) will be available for the first match if they test negative in the tests to be done tomorrow (Friday) and remain in isolation from the time they land in Dubai till the 19th morning.”

According to BCCI sources, as the players are coming from one bio-bubble to another, they have been allowed a reduced quarantine period. The players had to undergo Covid tests before boarding the flight in England, while another round of RT-PCR tests would be done upon their arrival in Dubai.

CSK have Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood and England allrounder Sam Curran. Delhi Capitals have Australia allrounder Marcus Stoinis and his compatriot, ‘keeper-batsman Alex Carey and allrounder Daniel Sams. Australia’s Glenn Maxwell provides the x-factor for Kings XI Punjab, while England’s Chris Jordan is one of their death-bowling options.

KKR have England’s Eoin Morgan and Tom Banton, and the team’s most expensive buy, Australia fast-bowling allrounder Pat Cummins. Rajasthan Royals have Australia’s Steve Smith as their skipper, and England’s Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Tom Curran as their key players. Royal Challengers Bangalore have Australia’s Aaron Finch, Adam Zampa, Kane Richardson and Josh Philippe, and England’s Moeen Ali.

The much-delayed Indian Premier League starts Saturday without its customary glitz and glamour, but the Twenty20 tournament is expected to be a welcome relief to cricket fans during the coronavirus pandemic. The short-form extravaganza normally starts in March but along with other major international sporting events was postponed as countries went into virus lockdowns. It was then moved to the United Arab Emirates as cases rose in India. All the eight teams have been in strict, bio-secure 'bubbles' since landing in the UAE, with the competition set to kick off when defending champions Mumbai Indians take on Chennai Super Kings in Abu Dhabi on September 19.

There will be no gala opening ceremony for the world's richest T20 league, and the games will be played behind closed doors at three venues including Dubai and Sharjah.

Yet president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Sourav Ganguly, expects a surge in viewership for the 13th edition with the matches scheduled for India's evening primetime TV slots.

"They (broadcasters) are actually expecting the highest rating of IPL this season because they believe if (people) don't turn up in the ground, they will be actually watching on their television sets," said Ganguly.

"There is a positive in everything."

Ganguly said crowds could even return to the stands later in the 53-day tournament, which ends on November 10.

"Because of the Covid and infection, you don't want people to be too close to each other, but very soon you will see there will be 30 percent people in the ground with social distancing," the former captain said.

"They are properly tested and allowed to enter the ground. But I think that is going to happen over a period of time."

Rajasthan Royals batsman Robin Uthappa believes the tournament will buoy cricket-lovers after a year hit by sporting postponements and cancellations.

"Most definitely, it is going to be really special this year, simply because of what we all have gone through as a human race," Uthappa said in a video posted on the IPL's official website.

"I think in this unpredictable time, we were and are craving for normalcy and this tournament and sports, in general, brings about that feeling of normalcy back into our lives."

- Coronavirus cases -

To reduce the number of people in the grounds, there will be no dancing cheerleaders.

Players will be ferried to and from hotels under strict BCCI health safety protocols. More than 20,000 coronavirus tests will be carried out, officials say.

The tournament has already been under scrutiny after two Chennai players tested positive for the coronavirus. Several top players pulled out in the build-up, mostly citing personal reasons.

The IPL is the most popular domestic league in the world but since its inception in 2008 has contended with corruption and match-fixing cases.

A spot-fixing scandal in 2013 led to two teams -- Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals -- being suspended for two seasons.

But with the teams in bio-bubbles, BCCI anti-corruption chief Ajit Singh told AFP last month that "controlling interaction between players and others will not be very difficult".

Despite the controversies, the IPL has attracted top foreign stars with Australia's Pat Cummins the most expensive overseas player after he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for $2.17 million at auction.

Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com
The spotlight will also be on Indian stars including Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and star batsman Virat Kohli, who will seek his maiden IPL title with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Dhoni retired from international cricket last month but remains one of the biggest attractions of the tournament.

Coronavirus in India
The spread of COVID-19 in India has left organisers with little choice but to hold the tournament abroad.

India's coronavirus cases surged past five million on Wednesday after the federal ministry of health reported a single-day jump of 90,123 cases.

India is only the second country in the world to confirm more than five million cumulative cases after the United States.

Experts have also warned that India's COVID-19 fatality rate could increase in coming weeks with lockdown restrictions relaxed except in high-risk areas.

But authorities ruled out imposing a second countrywide lockdown as recoveries were growing at more than 78 percent.

Will definitely watch but doesn't feel the same without crowds and with it being played in the UAE. Not going to be loads of high scoring games.

Is Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings rivalry based upon quality of cricket and something which has formed in IPL over the years or does it have some other history? I have watched come of their matches and heard the comments regarding rivalries but I always though Mumbai and Delhi would be like Karachi vs Lahore with bit of history of being the two of the biggest cities and always bit of competition in domestic competitions as well as other sports, cultures etc.

I feel this will be the first year for CSK to not make the playoffs as they are missing Harbhajan and Raina, as well as the fact that they aren’t getting any younger (yes they have proven the critics wrong time and again, but the thing about age is that it even if you delay it, it eventually catches up with you).

Delhi Capitals is also getting lots of praise by pundits but I feel the core of Pant, Shaw, Iyer, Rahane, and Stoinis is just way too light on the batting. Bowling looks great between Ashwin, Lamichhane and Rabada.

I’m really liking the look of KKR. Narine, Gill, Morgan, Andre Russel, Cummins, Karthik, Banton, Nagarkoti, Yadav, Mavi. It’s a mouth-watering lineup.

If you ask me, the likely contenders for the title are Mumbai and KKR with RCB and one other team to round out the top 4.

Titan24 There have been 12 seasons of IPL. Out of these, 7 were won by either Mumbai or CSK.

They are the two most successful IPL teams in number of wins as well as head to head records against other teams, and both are also some of the biggest spenders on players during the auctions.

Against each other, the two teams have a spectacular head to head rivalry. They’ve played the final against each other 4 times (3 won by Mumbai, which means 75% of Mumbai’s 4 wins in the IPL have been against CSK in the final). 1 was won by CSK.

Both teams are also loaded with star players and command the biggest fan followings in the entire league, and are chief reasons for IPL’s success, particularly Rohit at Mumbai and Dhoni at CSK.

It’s a natural rivalry based on competition, unlike Karachi and Lahore who both struggle to make the playoffs let alone finals every year. Delhi Capitals has also been unsuccessful, making it difficult to conjure up a rivalry versus Mumbai.

Thanks. Definitely makes sense that they have formed a rivalry based upon the success and quality of cricket both the side have played. I was just wondering that if there is something outside IPL as well but, its natural for the rivalries to form within the tournaments as well based upon the success and being top teams.

The rivalry between MI and CSK is purely from cricket perspective as these 2 are most successful teams. It build over the years and fans hate losing against each other.

There is a mini non cricket related rivalry between RCB vs CSK. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka from where these two teams belongs are not so friendly states and hence the rivalry. However, since CSK always beats RCB, cricket wise no rivalry.

During initial years of IPL, there used to be a rivalry between KKR and CSK. It was mostly because bengalis supported Dada and hated Dhoni as he was believed to be the reason for Ganguly's premature ommission from Indian team.

Bottomline is CSK is unanimously hated by most other teams :))

Would like to add that RCB and CSK also have a rivalry because of Kohli vs Dhoni. But RCB have been huge underachievers for many years now so yeah cricket wise not much of a rivalry

MI , KKR, CSK and RCB all have rivalry with each other.

Dhoni vs Kohli
Rohit Vs Kohli
Kohli Vs Gambhir
Gambhir Vs Dhoni

I know GG isn't playing now but that tiff has carried on even after he left.

It's a bit like MU, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs in the Prem. Everyone hates everyone. :)

Will be interesting for the PSL v IPL type discussions if we see high scoring games in IPL on pretty much same pitches where PSL was played.

Veteran South African paceman Dale Steyn will join Royal Challengers Bangalore from their game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on April 19th.

In a desperate bid to revive their plunging fortunes in the ongoing IPL, where they have lost all their six matches to stay glued to the bottom of the table, the Bengaluru franchise have fallen back on their old war horse who played for them for the first three years of the league.

The 35-year-old quick will replace Australian paceman Nathan Coulter-Nile who has been ruled out due to a back injury.

A release from RCB media cell said, “Nathan Coulter-Nile is still recovering from an injury and he has been prescribed ample rest. He won’t be able to play during IPL season 12. His absence has been felt greatly both in the team and on ground.”

While RCB’s batting has been inconsistent, their bowling consistently has been poor irrespective of conditions and the total they are defending. It remains to be seen if the 35-year-old, who went unsold in the last auction, provides that missing edge.

While another Australian player – Marcus Stoinis – joined the team after their limited-over series against Pakistan in the UAE, Coluter-Nile returned to his country after reportedly not being cleared by Cricket Australia to play in the IPL.

With the World Cup not too far away and Coulter-Nile likely to be part of their plan for the event, Australia seem to be cautious about the paceman who has been injury-prone. The right-arm quick had also missed last IPL due to injury after RCB had picked him in the auction.

How fast is this pakistani American Ali Khan guy? There seems to be no videos of him anywhere ....

Not a big fan.

I just feel that too many of these T20 leagues are a fake, with some very strange results and performances.

It's difficult to believe that all of it is genuine if I'm being honest.

I wouldn’t be surprised to be honest, between marketing agendas, showmanship, and fixing, but I suppose it makes for good popcorn entertainment.

Will be strange as Pakistani fan to see cricket without our guys in it :(

Is Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings rivalry based upon quality of cricket and something which has formed in IPL over the years or does it have some other history? I have watched come of their matches and heard the comments regarding rivalries but I always though Mumbai and Delhi would be like Karachi vs Lahore with bit of history of being the two of the biggest cities and always bit of competition in domestic competitions as well as other sports, cultures etc.

CSK vs RCB is equivalent to Karachi vs Lahore

Mumbai vs Karnataka (Bengaluru is the capital of state of Karnataka) has been the biggest cricketing rivalry. Karnataka also ended Mumbai's run of 15 consecutive Ranji titles.

MI v/s CSK is the biggest IPL rivalry that has got to do with the no of titles they have won.

Delhi don't have rivalry with anyone. They are actually second favourite of many as they are filled with youngsters.

Never knew this dynamic to be honest. Very unfamiliar with India's south for obvious reasons but very interesting.
