'You need to stop calling me that word': Virat Kohli's appeal to boycott 'embarrassing' 'King' tag

Virat Kohli has urged fans not to call him 'King' as he finds it very 'embarrassing' during the high-profile RCB Unbox event ahead of IPL 2024.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru embarked on a new journey during the high-profile RCB unbox event at the Chinnaswamy stadium on Tuesday. Not only did the franchise ring in a new change, replacing Bangalore with Bengaluru, the new jersey with an added touch of blue signifies a new era for one of the three OG franchises. And yet, on top of these two new additions, Virat Kohli emerged as the show stealer as he made a heartfelt and earnest request to fans during the closing stages of the event.

It's not often that Kohli fans do not listen to Virat, but this one could be an exception. The former RCB captain urged the public to do away with the moniker of 'King' to describe him. The label of 'King' was bestowed on Kohli many years back, by the media and broadcasting channels before the fans wholeheartedly embraced it. If Sachin Tendulkar was 'god', Kohli became their 'King', but now, after all these years, Kohli wants to end the movement once and for all as the term embarrasses him.

The crowd waited in anticipation for their beloved Kohli to speak, and once Smriti Mandhana and her fellow RCB teammates were celebrated for their WPL title, Alan Walker and Raghu Bishnoi serenaded the crowd, the new jersey was unveiled, and the name change was announced, it was time for the most eagerly-awaited segment of the evening: Kohli addressing the crowd.

"It is lovely to be back again," he started after the host Danish Sait asked him, "How is the King feeling?" The crowd went berserk as the first words came out of his mouth. So, he had to stop for a second. To build it up further, the lights in the stadium began flickering, after which Kohli finally continued, "Let me talk. Guys, we have to get to Chennai tonight. We have a chartered flight so we don't have time (laughs). Firstly, you need to stop calling me that word [King]. I was telling Faf that it is very embarrassing for me when you call me that name every year, just call me Virat."

Steven Smith has come out in support of the Delhi batter and explained why he needs to be playing in the marquee event. He said while speaking to local Indian sports media

"He plays the situation. Some wickets you play on, your strike rate doesn't need to be high. We've seen Virat play some masterclass innings and get his team over the line, whether it is for RCB or for India. I've been in the opposition and he has done it against us on numerous occasions."

"He (Kohli) plays extremely well under pressure. He loves that. It is such players that you want in your team when you go to the World Cup and face pressure situations. You want the experienced players who stand up in those situations and Virat is certainly one of those."

Australia star Steve Smith has shared his opinion on the selection of India's batter Virat Kohli for the T20 World Cup, he said:

"He plays the situation. Some wickets you play on, your strike rate doesn't need to be high. You play according to what's in front of you. We have seen Virat play some masterclass innings and get his team over the line, whether it has been RCB or India. I've been on the opposition in the Australian team when he has done this against us on numerous occasions,"

List of records Virat Kohli can break in CSK vs RCB IPL 2024 match

On Friday, during the match against Chennai, if Kohli scores six runs, he will become the first Indian in history to score 12,000 runs in T20s. As of now, the former Indian skipper, who has played in 376 T20s scored 11,994 runs. He is currently sixth in the list of top run-getters in all T20s behind Chris Gayle, Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard, Alex Hales and David Warner. Kohli, however, is the only one who averages over 40.

He will also become the second fastest to 12000 T20 runs after Gayle, who had reached the feat in 353 runs.

The 35-year-old will also get a chance to become the first Indian batter to smash 100 50+ scores in T20s and third overall. Chris Gayle (110) and David Warner (109) stand above him in the list.

Virat was gonna be an ATG the first time he hit a ball in international Cricket. The talent was there for all to see. The man is so incredibly dedicated to his craft fully deserving the success he has enjoyed during his enviable career. Even if the talent was always there he had to polish it to be the best of the best of his generation. Not only in Cricket but in life just talent will not be enough to be successful unless you are wiling to work hard. This is where our players are always lacking in the sense that after a few decent performances they act as if the are ATG's. Had the likes of Umar Akmal not been more interested in dancing and partying he could have been an ATG candidate too.

Virat is already an ATG. No doubt about it. He will find his spot in the world cup squad as well.

Former Indian Batter Wasim Jaffer in an interaction with an international sports channel, lashed out at the criticism of Virat Kohli:

“He only faced 6 balls in the powerplay against Chennai Super Kings. Generally, he goes really hard in the powerplay, that’s been his pattern and then he slows down a little bit when the spin is on. I think he will play the way he played last season."

“You talked about how he had a strike rate of 140, in his career he is averaging 50+ and T20Is and franchise cricket and strike rate of 140. I don’t know why we talk so much about him. Someone who is modern great and he has done time and time again in situations. Even in the last T20 World Cup, he averaged 90+ and had a strike rate of 140.”

Virat Kohli has surpassed Suresh Raina to become the Indian player with the most catches in the men's T20 format. Kohli made the record during clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2024. The 35-year-old took PBKS batters Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan's catches to complete his 174th in the T20 format.

Kohli reveals game plan as countdown continues to T20 World Cup

The India veteran has provided some insight on what aspects of his game he has been working on and what he got up to during his recent break from the game.

India star Virat Kohli knows he needs to continue making adjustments to his game if he is to keep up with the evolving nature of T20 cricket.

Kohli discussed the finer points of his batting following a Player of the Match performance for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday and just months out from the start of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean.

The right-hander looked in good touch as he contributed a quickfire 77 at the top pf the order for Royal Challengers Bengaluru at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, hitting 11 fours and two massive sixes against a world-class Punjab Kings bowling line-up that included South Africa quick Kagiso Rabada, England all-rounder Sam Curran and India teammate Arshdeep Singh.

It was Kohli's ability to use his feet and loft the likes of Rabada and Arshdeep over cover that stood out most during his 49-ball stay and the 35-year-old admitted this tactic has been something he has been working on in recent times.

"Well I mean you have to (make additions to your game)," Kohli noted post-match.

"People know I play the cover drive pretty well so they're not going to allow me to hit gaps and with guys like KG (Rabada) and Arshdeep as well, he's tall. So, I mean, if they're hitting length, you have to create some momentum in the ball.

"And once you're closer to the ball, you kind of negate the bounce that's going to happen. You meet it earlier."

Kohli finished the most recent T20 World Cup in Australia as the leading run-scorer with 296 runs from six innings and will form a vital cog in India's squad for this year's tournament if he wins selection for what would be a sixth appearance at the 20-over showcase.

India will have to finalise a squad of 15 players prior to the tournament commencing on June 1 and Kohli is determined to continue to work hard to make sure he flourishes in the shortest format.

"You have to come up with a game plan here and there and try to keep improving your game," Kohli noted.

"I know my name is nowadays quite attached to just promoting the game in many parts of the world when it comes to T20 cricket. But, I've still got it, I guess."

Kohli only recently returned to the playing arena at the IPL, after he skipped India's home Test series against England to spend some time with his family and welcome in his second child alongside wife Anushka.

The star batter revealed he spent the time away from the rigors of professional cricket outside of India and enjoyed the novelty of not being recognised on a daily basis.

"We were not in the country. We were at a place where people were not recognising us. Just time together as a family, just to feel normal for two months," Kohli said.

"For me, for us as a family, it was a surreal experience. Of course, having two kids, things become totally different from a family perspective. So just the ability to be together, the connections that you make with your older child, it's amazing.

"I mean, I couldn't have been more grateful to God for the opportunity that I got to spend time with my family.

"And yeah, just the place that we were in, I was telling the guys that when we came back, the voices back home felt that much louder. I couldn't look up because I was just not used to being called my name for two months. And then immediately you hear these loud noises and then you're back in it all again.

"But it was beautiful. It's an amazing experience to just be another person on the road and not be recognised and just carry on about life that normally people would on a daily basis."

Former Australian captain Aaron Finch slammed critics for questioning India batter Virat Kohli's place in the Men in Blue's T20I set-up. Speaking on an international sports channel program:

"I cannot understand that whenever an ICC event, irrespective of the format, is coming, every time people talk about Virat Kohli and whether he is under pressure for his spot. This is the biggest piece of rubbish I have ever heard. He is the greatest white ball player I have ever seen."

"It does not matter if he strikes at 140 and other guys strike at 160, when you pick up a team, you pick up a guy who gets the job done day in and day out for his team during big games. It is ludicrous that we keep having this conversation."

Virat Kohli is not just a legend for India. He is also a legend of RCB.

T20 World Cup: BCCI Official Says 'Kohli is Doing Fine, Selectors Don't Go By Social Media Memes'

Virat Kohli is currently has the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) Orange Cap, which is for the leading the batting chart with 181 runs in three matches. His strike rate (141.1) is not that impressive, but a BCCI official believes that Kohli will improve it, considering his form and experience.

Before the start of IPL 2024, there were reports that Kohli might find it tough to get a place in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup, scheduled later this year, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will be keeping a close watch on the former Indian captain’s performance.

However, Kohli’s two back-to-back fifties in three matches, has lifted his chances for World Cup contention.

Though RCB has lost two matches, Kohli’s form with the bat is currently a topic of discussion among netizens. Some are questioning his strike-rate while some are praising his innings. Memes related to his “not-so-impressive” strike rate are also getting viral.

Speaking to IANS, a BCCI official — on condition of anonymity — said that Kohli despite coming from a long break, is “playing well” and added that selectors “don’t go by social media memes” while picking up a team.

“See, it is just the beginning (of the league) and Kohli has started fine. He will improve his strike rate as well in the coming matches. As far as I personally feel, he will make it (to the World Cup squad). Selectors don’t go by social media memes. Cricket is played on the field not on social media platforms,” the official added.

The T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to kickstart from June 1 onwards in West Indies and USA, following the conclusion of IPL 2024 season. Team India are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan.

Virat Kohli, Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter, on Saturday became the first batter in IPL history to touch 7500-run tally in the 17-year history of the tournament. Kohli achieved the feat during the match against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur in IPL 2024. The next best tally in IPL belongs to Shikhar Dhawan - 6755 - over 740 runs less than Kohli.

Once aspired to beat Virat Kohli in his career, now posting tweets to appreciate him. Well, it takes courage to do so. I appreciate Ahmed Shehzad for it.

Ok we will call you GOAT then.

Virat will play for another 5 years and will break all batting records.

why is Junaid trying to prove that Virat is a selfish player. Why is he getting so personal with him? Probably missing the attention that he used to get when he was actively playing for Pakistan.

I think that is not real Junaid Khan.

Probably either a copy account.

Junaid has outnumbered Kohli a few times so maybe he is thinking about those days.

Virat Kohli, the iconic Indian cricketer and former captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), recently shared insights into his deep-rooted passion for cricket, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to the sport, while speaking to local sports media:

"My only tip would be you first figure out how much you like to play cricket. And if it is something that makes you wake up in the morning and go back to playing cricket, then you should definitely give it everything you have and enjoy it mostly, but you have to be absolutely committed to be able to make it a profession, if you're really interested."

"From the time I have any understanding of me as a human being, that (cricket) is the only thing I experienced that I used to love, just picking up the bat and hitting a cricket ball. I was convinced that I am going to play for India and win matches one day."

Yuvraj Singh identifies key to Virat Kohli’s journey to best batter of this generation

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 ambassador Yuvraj Singh has hailed Virat Kohli as the best batter of this generation across formats and identified what sets him apart from the rest.

Kohli’s career hit new heights at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, where he topped the run charts with a record tally of runs. The stalwart batter walked away with the Player of the Tournament award despite coming into the event with his best years seemingly past him, and after an extended period where his frequency of making triple-digit scores reduced.

Kohli has set his eyes on the coveted trophy at the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and will be featuring for the sixth time in the tournament. His first-ever appearance at the T20 World Cup was in 2012, five years after India achieved their only title win in the format.

Yuvraj said that Kohli deserved another World Cup medal after 2011, where he was part of the title-winning Cricket World Cup campaign.

“He has definitely broken all the records in this era,” Yuvraj said in a chat with ICC.

“The best batter of this generation, I feel, in all formats. And I think he is also someone who needs a World Cup Medal. He has one. I'm sure he is not satisfied with one. I think he surely deserves that medal as well.”

Kohli’s penchant for big knocks under pressure is well known and the T20 World Cup has witnessed some of his most impactful knocks, most notably two years back at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where he awed over 90,000 spectators with a finish like none other against arch-rivals Pakistan.

But the tournament has witnessed Kohli at his peak way earlier. In the 2016 edition of the tournament, Australia bore the brunt of Kohli’s ravishing form when he put on an exhibition at chasing targets down. An unbeaten 82 off 51 balls in a run-chase of 161 put India in the semi-finals of the tournament.

“I think he understands his game really well,” Yuvraj said.

“He knows if he's there till the end, he is going to win the game for India and he has done that on some big occasions - against Australia in Mohali as well.

“Once he had the confidence of chasing and knowing the situation, he knows how to bat in these situations, knows which bowlers to attack, which bowlers to take singles off, when to attack again, handle the pressure and knows when to change his game.”

While 2016 and 2022 are memorable for two of the best knocks the tournament has seen, Kohli’s best run came in the 2014 T20 World Cup, where he made the most runs he has made in any edition of the tournament.

Kohli made four half-centuries in six matches in the tournament that year and Yuvraj, who witnessed some of those knocks from the non-striker’s end, hailed his ball-striking in the tournament as “unbelievable”.

“I think he was outstanding. He was in one of the best forms of his life. He was hitting the ball unbelievably. And I had a small partnership with him (in the final) and then he batted with Dhoni," Yuvraj recalled.

Kohli’s 77 in the final went in vain as Sri Lanka won by six wickets.

A decade later, the maestro has another shot at a title win when India travel to the Caribbean Islands and the USA to create history.

The Kohli of 2024 is not too different from his 2014 version. Currently the top-scorer in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League, the star batter declared his availability to play T20Is for India in the lead up to the T20 World Cup and will once again be the lynchpin in the batting line-up as India seek glory.

Kohli has had little trouble catching up with T20’s rapid evolution, scoring 542 runs this IPL 2024 at an average of 67.75 and a strike-rate of 148.08. What really makes him one of a kind? Yuvraj has the answer.

“Why I think he was so good was because every time in nets or a practice situation, he would not go and just slog balls,” Yuvraj describes.

“In the nets, he would always bat like he was batting in a match. He put that in repetition after repetition after repetition. I have not seen that in many players. I think that is the key to his success.”

ICC

My guess is Kohli will want to play champions trophy before retiring from ODIs but BCCI might not let him. It all depends on his test form

Cemented is GOAT status by winning 2 world cups and a MOTM winning innings in the World Cup Final. Legend

True happiness.. So happy for him to finish T20Is on a high after heart breaks of 2014 and 2016.
2014 more so as just 2-3 overs changed the game. He was batting like a dream in the final.
It was a very similar strike rate in 2014 too and almost similar score for him

Virat Kohli showed the value of having 1 if not more steady players in the team even in a format such as T20.
He played the perfect knock. He held the innings together with wickets falling at the other end and then accelerated at the right time.
Not everyone needs to be a slogger in the XI. Otherwise, you won't make even 100 runs on most days.

Had india lost this game, people would have blamed Virat for his inning that it was slow.

But what a way to sign off your career. A world cup win, POtM in final. Farewell virat.

I don't think even Kohli cares for these records.

His main goal of surpassing Sachin's record which was the only thing he was aiming for.

Beyond that he's known as the greatest chaser of the game.

He's achieved atg status in 2014 alone.

James Anderson, who recently bid adieu to Test cricket, appeared in BBC’s Tailenders podcast and talked about his admiration for Kohli’s brilliance in run chases, he said:

“I do not know if there is been a better batter in the history of the game batting second and chasing down scores than Virat Kohli,” Anderson said. “His record at chasing is absolutely phenomenal. The number of hundreds he has scored in the second innings, chasing down scores is ridiculous.”

“It is no surprise that when he gets in that situation, with his mentality, it is just like it is meant to be. His self-belief is so high,”

“I cannot say that. I was thinking more in terms of just chasing. Michael Bevan from Australia comes to my mind, particularly in the late 1990s and early 2000s – he was just phenomenal coming in at number six and doing that job,”

“Kohli batting at number 3 gets those hundreds while Bevan was renowned for getting his 50s, 60s and being at the end, while Kohli gets the big score, to get his teams over the line. I honestly can’t think of a better finisher and greater white-ball players than him (Kohli),”

Former captain Younis Khan has urged India to visit Pakistan, calling it the "only thing left" in Kohli's career:

“Virat Kohli should come to Pakistan for 2025 Champions Trophy. It is our wish too. I think the only thing left in Virat’s career is to tour Pakistan and perform,”
Fans shower Virat Kohli with love during the Champions One-Day Cup 2024 at Faisalabad. Interestingly, Virat Kohli seems to have more fans in Pakistan than in India

Out of the fab 4, am not 100% but I think Kohli averages <50 in Tests; he just got out for 47 odd, albeit to a legendary bowler

Virat Kohli breaches the 9000-run mark in Tests during second innings of 1st Test against New Zealand
Kohli became only the 4th Indian batter to surpass 9000 Test runs, joining an elite group that includes Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar. However, it took him 197 innings to reach the mark, making him the slowest among the four to do so.

Rahul Dravid - 176 innings in 2006

Sachin Tendulkar - 179 innings in 2004

Sunil Gavaskar - 192 innings in 1985

Virat Kohli - 196 innings in 2024*

Not even close to being an ATG in Test cricket. The most overrated Test batsman I have ever seen.

"Extraordinary": Ex-British PM David Cameron Praises India Cricketer At NDTV World Summit

Former British Prime Minister David Cameron praised Indian cricket team star batter Virat Kohli as an "extraordinary leader" at the NDTV World Summit. Cameron was asked to choose his favourite Indian cricketer and he went on to shower praise on Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli. He started by saying that he is so old that he grew up watching the legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi and also recalled watching Rahul Dravid score a brilliant century in England. He went on to say that in Virat, India had an extraordinary leader and he showed incredible captaincy and inspiration on the field.

"I am so old that I grew up watching Bishan Bedi. I remember watching Rahul Dravid score a brilliant century in the UK. I remember sitting with John Major who is another Conservative Prime Minister who said - Watch this guy, he is very very good," Cameron said.

"I think in Virat Kohli, you had an extraordinary leader. Sometimes, you can see, as we have done with Ben Stokes as our captain, just incredible captaincy on the field and inspiration. I think you had that with Virat Kohli. So lots of great cricket players to watch. Obviously, some great British-Indian players coming through. In the years to come, you will see many British-Indian players coming through and taking on India and hopefully winning," the former British Prime Minister added.

Earlier, Virat Kohli joined an elite group of cricketers by scoring his 9,000th run in Test matches during a fluent 70 on day three of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru.

Kohli, who batted at No. 3 for the second time in this Test, turned the tables after being dismissed for a duck in the first innings on October 17.

Prior to this match, Kohli had last batted at No. 3 in 2016 and had a modest average of 19.40 in that position. However, he showcased his class in the second innings, notching up his first Test half-century since December 2023. Alongside Sarfaraz Khan, Kohli forged a crucial partnership of 136 runs that revived India's innings.

Needing 53 runs to surpass the 9,000-run mark, Kohli reached his half-century off 70 balls, featuring five boundaries and a majestic six off Ajaz Patel. He then carefully accumulated the additional three runs needed to reach the milestone, taking a further nine balls.

According to Wisden, Kohli became the 18th player to score 9,000 runs in Test cricket and joined Joe Root and Steve Smith as the only active players in this exclusive club.

He also became the fourth Indian to achieve this feat, following in the footsteps of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.
