[VIDEOS/PICTURES] Will Babar Azam revolutionise the batting culture in Pakistan?

Agree with your post! He is just a little short of what I would could call a fab 4 level right now.

Why exactly is Mickey and the captain hell bent on making him at #5 in Tests? Do you have any idea? It's absolutely ridiculous. His team needs him to bat at #4, anyone with a sense will say that.

Because he doesn't play unnecessary dot balls who ever watches cricket can understand players strong or weak points quickly. Maybe it's difficult for you but not for all

If you think Babar Azam is the worst strike rotator in Pakistan then you understand everything but cricket.

Agree with you on this too, he failed a few times batting up the order but he should now be moved straight back into top 4.

LOL you are living in a fools paradise not me. Because of this outdated mindset Pakistan are currently lying at 6th In ODIs. People like you don't even understand what are the requirements of modern day ODIs. Keep supporting players with poor strike rates your team will keep on struggling. Without Fakhar and Malik/Hafeez In the side you can't even beat BD and Afg.

If Malik/Hafeez contributed more than once every 5 innings Pakistan wouldn't be ranked 5th now would they?

You're also conveniently forgetting the fact that Babar has a better SR than both Malik and Hafeez. But that doesn't fit your narrative does it?

Theres a reason why Australia have won 3 ODIs in 2 years - they decided to take your approach by filling the entire top 6 based on boundary hitting ability. You need a balanced batting line up - the reason Pakistan won the last game was because they played percentage cricket. Imam and Babar put on a comfortable hundred run partnership at a run rate of over 5 which not only ensured that they stay within the RRR but they also keep wickets in hand, allowing the lower order stroke-makers to comfortably finish the game off. If we took your approach, of including players on the basis of their SR only, we would get a repeat of the Asia Cup where the likes of Fakhar, Asif, Faheem couldn't get bat on ball for the whole tournament and Pakistan couldn't even bat out the 50 overs. Even Kohli the other day played a high percentage knock of 104 off 112 - he hardly took any risks and India still won the game.

You definitely need players with high SR in the team, but you also need technically endorsed accumulators who are the glue of the innings. The only reason England are able to play with a gung-ho approach is because they bat down to number 10 - which is a luxury Pakistan does not have.

Lol this same poster wants fawad Alam out of all the people and complaining about babar. I hope you are ok bro.

Completely wrong with regards to the dot-ball ratio. In fact, he has the lowest dot-ball ratio amongst Pakistani batsmen after Sarfaraz and very good numbers overall.

The following table calculates batsmen's batting strike-rates when boundaries are removed from the equation. Doesn't exactly give a perfect picture regarding dot balls as 2s, 3s are also in the equation but over a good sample size, you can get a good idea. All batsmen with 1000+ ODI runs since Babar debuted are included in the list.

Something doesn’t look right in the table - can you please recheck. A player’s SR can’t be higher than his overall SR if you take out the boundaries. Say a batsman scores 89 of 100 balls for a SR of 89 with 8 4s & 2 6s. Take out both (boundary & the balls to hit boundaries), his score comes down to 45 of 90; and a SR of 50. I think, a batsman’s SR after excluding boundaries around 50 is exceptionally good. Top players in Test, scores around 50% of their runs in boundaries; in ODI a little less (~40-45%) while higher in T20. However, in ODI, % of contribution from boundary depends on the batting position as well.

Around 50% shot production (opposite of dot %) is actually very good. In this example, for 100 balls 89, if a batsman scores 8 boundaries & 2 6s; for a SR of 89, he needs to score 45 in 90 balls. Take 34 singles, 4 doubles & 1 triple - that’s 8+2+34+4+1= 49 productive shots & 51 dots or 49% shot productivity. In recent days with 5 men inside & gradually more % contribution from boundary in ODI, I belive that 51% is actually going higher. For the very best from 1980s Jones & Javed had a shot productivity around 50% which was outstanding that time (but due to lesser contribution from boundaries, their SR was in 70s, for Javed’s case it went further down for his last few years).

For Babar’s case, more than ability I tend to belive it’s his approach to the game that is costing him at least 5% SR - his shot making ability, balance, footwork, timing & wrist work is good enough to have a SR around 89-91, considering a bulk of his runs have come against lower ranked teams - but may be at the cost of 2-3 runs in his average. However, majority of his scores are in UAE, which is not the best place for touch players like Babar, which also has affected his SR (which is declining now from late 80s to mid 80s now). Still, his comparative SR by quarter suggests, he relatively slows down in 4th quarter (76-100 individual score) & jumps exponentially in 5th Q - this is his biggest improvement area, dot ball % is not a problem for him. He is by far the best rotator in PAK team and he can punish every loose ball, so skill wise he is well covered - need to play more for the purpose than what he has done so far.

Something doesnÂ’t look right in the table - can you please recheck. A playerÂ’s SR canÂ’t be higher than his overall SR if you take out the boundaries. Say a batsman scores 89 of 100 balls for a SR of 89 with 8 4s & 2 6s. Take out both (boundary & the balls to hit boundaries), his score comes down to 45 of 90; and a SR of 50. I think, a batsmanÂ’s SR after excluding boundaries around 50 is exceptionally good. Top players in Test, scores around 50% of their runs in boundaries; in ODI a little less (~40-45%) while higher in T20. However, in ODI, % of contribution from boundary depends on the batting position as well.

That is exactly what I've done in the column on the extreme right (the one titled SR-4s/6s). Boundaries and balls to hit boundaries are taken out of the equation.

Babar's numbers are very good amongst other top order batsmen in terms of non-boundary runs.

Understood🤪. I am actually browsing in mobile and somehow iPhone X is curtailing last few right side columns (can’t see beyond the SR - AdV’s 111 is insane for that sort of average). Rotation was never his problem- I wrote it during 2016 NZ ODI series, but can’t yet tell that for his motive.

People even used to say we would get all out on 150 without Misbah and that has never happened after his retirement or even in his tenure whenever he failed we were able to post big scores. Remember NZ series in 2014?Asia cup matches against BD n Ind? SA series in 2013? We always succeeded or scored big whenever misbah failed with the bat. Because he was a dot ball master and made us lose momentum. Stop all these arguments were rubbish back then and now they sound even more stupid when conditions are even flatter.

Just to defend Babar's poor strike rotation ability you have to come up with nonsense. So typical of Pak fans who blindly support individual players rather than thinking about teams' interest

Go back and read my posts.

Where have I said Babar can't improve or is the finished article.
Where have I said he doesn't have a dot ball problem. ( I mentioned the need for a sweep and dot ball issue with spin)
I didn't say anywhere that he doesn't need others to do some heavy lifting on his behalf ( though acknowledged it's a team game with different roles)

All I have said is that he is of good value to this Pak line up.
That is not to say others like fakhar and hafeez are not.

And about the wickets getting flat, I didn't say they aren't flatter but I don't agree that it all started in 2013. And even if it did , we had major top order issues in the time until Babar debuted, and now we don't.

I think that is in the interests of the pak team.
Oh and I laughed when u said that fawad and saud could AVG 55 at 80 in Odis. ( Though in the best interests of Pak I hope u are right. But we only want one such player in the team at any 1 time ;)

No consistency it seems - awful shot to get out in 2nd ODI

Let him play a few more matches on UAE's soil against Windies and Sri Lanka and then see his consistency

Right- this post stems from my discussions with Farhan93 about Babar Azam. I feel he has been good for our team, but there are a few out there who feel he should not be in our 11.

I remember the bad old days where we would struggle to bat out 50 overs and feel that he has been the reason why we no longer have that issue- so we can get to a score for our stronger suit (bowling) to get to work. Some people have issue with his dot ball problem (and I agree he does need to improve especially against spin), but I think this is a secondary issue as at least now we bat the full quota of overs more often than not.

In his 56 games he has scored 15 or less on 16 occasions. We have lost 15 of these games (the only one we won was the SL game in CT which was a damn struggle to chase 235!!

Out of these 16 occasions we have batted first 7 times and lost every game. In these 7 games we have only scored more than 275 twice which is really poor (against WI and SL who are seen as weaker teams than us)

In 9 chases, we have had to chase less than 300 7 times but have not got anywhere close to winning these games,

This basically summarises the impact of babar azam. (And if he isn't there to play out dot balls!) There are some straightforward chases in modern day times, and we messed them up big time. So we should be happy we have somebody who is fairly consistent in our line up. When he fails (and isn't there to stifle the innings according to some) we do not score anywhere near enough!!!

I have always said he will score a few runs here and there play a few pleasing innings on the eye he will never really be the world star batsmen we are craving for because let's be honest 9/10 times he will fail when it really matters. Needs to develop his power game.

Babar looking good but hope that drop doesnt effect him today - need a good score.

Why exactly is Mickey and the captain hell bent on making him at #5 in Tests? Do you have any idea? It's absolutely ridiculous. His team needs him to bat at #4, anyone with a sense will say that.

I agree, I was very surprised he was batting so low down the order in the test matches. Pakistan has a history of sending inexperienced players in the top order and reserving the middle order spots for the senior players.

Babar has scored runs almost everywhere now. The phase where he had to establish himself as a big name is over. Now its time to join the league of Smith, Root and williamson in all formats of the game. Think Kohli is too hard to catch, at least at the moment.

Lol! When was the last time this softie made a 100 against a top team? Sure he will revolutionize the batting culture with his 50s and 60s! :))

Are u serious ???? . This softie is yet to score a test hundred away from home. And u are comparing him with root, Smith, Williamson

This is trolling at best !!!

The thing is he somehow manages to throw away his wicket after getting a start. We've seen this so many times before. Needs to develop temperament and appetite for hundreds. These 50's and 60's will be good enough to earn him a regular spot in his team, but it won't elevate him to the next level.

he surely has the potential what i have called
"to change the batting culture in pakistan":ba

It’s refreshing to see a Pakistani batsman scoring quickly by playing proper cricket strokes , instead of mindless close your eyes and swinging the bat.

The legend has arrived... single handedly carrying nation's hopes... what a batsman!!!

Let’s hope so but to be a legend your innings need to be meaningful and win matches , not just entertainment with a fluent cameo.

played an excellent inning today its difficult to chase 180+ targets if you have batting partner like hussain talat

If he can drag Pakistan over the line here in a real pressure do-or-die match vs New Zealand, it really would be a massive statement.

He has already done it, sort of.

Babar and Haris are our best batsmen.

Chants of Babar Babar in the ground,
He has become hero for Pakistan,
After long time in history a pure batsman is hero , not bowler not allrounder

Babar is a serious hero in Pakistan, man.
The crowd is chanting his name like they once did for Afridi.

53* for Babar Azam in National T20 Cup as a captain.

102* off 59! brilliant captain's knock as an opener.

Was just watching his innings against New Zealand again.

And what a knock that was.

Beautiful shots played with absolute control.

Babar is technically very gifted. He is the most technically sound batsman since Mohammed Yousuf.

If Pakistan can get a few guys like Babar, things can improve drastically.

Even Shehzad couldn't stop him. Rizwan should be opening with Babar.

Having no international class batsman since Inzi, Moyo and Younis Khan it's a blessing to have Babar.

As a Pakistani he is in a league of his own as a batsman. But what is even more pleasing is that he has made a big name for himself at the international level.

That innings vs New Zealand has transformed his reputation as one of the best in the world.

That can have a very positif impact on our cricket in the upcoming years. Youngsters have someone to look at and know where they have to be as batters to make a name at the international level. Rather than looking at the likes of Azhar Ali, Asad Shafik and others who play every series just to do enough to play in the next.

Farhan93

Are you on board now?!
When he fails we lose- still holding true!

That shot over extra cover on the back foot was so special.

It looks like he has gained a lot from his stint in the T20 blast.
I hope he gets a season of first class cricket also.

Babar Azam is now the Pakistani Tendulkar

When he plays well, the batting looks like it has done well, when he gets out, the rest of the batting side panics. the Entire team is currently revolved around 1 player in ALL formats for Pakistan. We desperately need to find our Dravid, Sehwags to get this pressure off him

Has a pretty low fc average for being considered a Tendulkar.

Just kidding. Atleast Tendulkar had dravid, hopefully others support babar. Like asad, Haris and azhar. Hopefully abid Ali can support babar in tests and ifthikar in odis

Pakistan need a good quality test opening pair, if they can get a pair that averages 50 together, imagine Babar coming in with far less pressure on his shoulders....he would be more free flowing, not consistently having to rebuild and scoring mountains of runs. Add a middle/lower order batsman who can get some runs too and the batting would be so strong.

If Pakistan's bowling could back up a unit like that, the test team would be on an upwards trajectory.

He is Tendulkar of Early to Mid 90's. Its Sachin or bust for India and it is looking the same for Pakistan.

Sachin had good batting support after 1998.

Not making the Tendulkar comparisons just yet. BUT, Tendulkar Played 310 FC games over 25 years. An average of 12.4 matches per year. Babar has played 54 FC matches over 10 years so far. Average of 5.4 matches per year. It’s very likely as he ups his own game and number of matches over time, those stats will start to reflect the talent.

I kind of agree. Sachin inspired a generation of elite batsmen possibly a decade after he became the legend. We may see such an inspiration 10 years later where a new culture of quality batsmen emerges

Of this era? Yes.

But, all-time? Nope. Not yet.

For me, that is Saeed Anwar. Sheer brilliance, aesthetics that you won't find anywhere else, rock-slid consistency.

Saeed had even overtaken Tendulkar in the 90s. Too bad he retired early - the daughter incident happened and he didn't take fitness seriously either.

Babar is the most naturally gifted batter since Youhana.

We don't produce many but when we do they are effortlessly elegant. Hopefully he will inspire others to up their game and we can add 2-3 to support his innings.

Pakistani needs to find more batsman otherwise he will be known as Pakistani Lara or Pakistani Smith.

Too early to tell. I am nervous about how Misbah will deal with him.

Whats with the troll posts lol
Babar isnt just anyother player he is one of the best in the world right now (white ball) so its not like one of those umar akmal vs kholi threads.
And i think its fair what the op is suggesting he is clearly the only good batsman in the side and the team infact is way too dependent on him
Clearly the OP isnt comparing him with Sachin he is just suggesting that this team has found its self in the same space as that of indian side of 90s where you have one quality batsman sorrounded by mediocrity.

By Pakistan standards it's probably not far off. Amazing what can be achieved when you ally technique with some judgement. Very rare qualities for a Pakistan batsman who are mostly pretty thick.

While the concept of this thread is that Pak is dependent upon Babar Azam which is a valid point but the title could have been better I think. As he doesnt need to be mentioned as Pakistani Tendulkar just to manifest that Babar is in the same shoe as he was.

Brilliant Babar posts unbeaten hundred

This series could be a great opportunity for Babar to authoritatively make his mark in tests. Australian tours can be life-changing, especially for Asian batsmen. Hope he makes the most of his sublime form.

Very pleasing to see a big score converted by Babar.

Hopefully he can do the same in the tests.

Hussey went out of his way to praise him several times during the innings.

One batsman can't create a revolution unless he is Sachin level and wins you matches/takes closer singlehandedly every 4th match .

Babar has all the ingredients to play that role for Pakistan. He is already doing it in lols and now it's time for tests.

No . Off scoring circa 500 runs in the world cup, and averaging 50 in tests from the time we toured England last year.

I have my answer I guess!

Lets have him bat at no.3 in test matches instead of hiding behind 5 batsman.

Lets also see him bat why chasing a big total in ODIs.

I know he is probably Pakistan's best talent to have come across in the past 20 years however lets also not forget that he was below 7 names in the world cup top scorers which include Sharma, Warner, Shakib Al hasan (an allrounder scoring 600 runs), kane williamson, joe root, johnny bairstow, aaron finch and ben stokes (another allrounder who only scored 10 less runs than him and plays at no.6-7)
