Gloucestershire sign Zafar Gohar for remaining LV= Insurance County Championship matches

19 August 2021

Gloucestershire Cricket is delighted to announce the signing of Pakistan International spinner Zafar Gohar.

The 26-year-old will play in all of Gloucestershire’s remaining Division Two LV= Insurance County Championship matches in 2021, with the visit of Northamptonshire on Monday 30 August to the Bristol County Ground being his first match.

Zafar expressed his excitement on signing for Gloucestershire:

“Having spent a lot of time in the UK in the past few years, it is a real dream come true to have the opportunity to play county cricket.

Gloucestershire are a fantastic club with a rich history, and I'm looking forward to hopefully playing my part in ensuring the season finishes on a high.”

Born in Lahore, Zafar was part of two back-to-back Under-19 World Cups from 2012 but he shot to the limelight during a Youth tour to England in 2013. He finished as the most successful bowler, in a tri-series also involving Bangladesh, with 18 wickets at 11.44.

The spinner was selected by Pakistan for his One-Day International debut against England in 2015 as part of the England tour of United Arab Emirates.

England won the match comfortably by six wickets, but it was Zafar who was the only Pakistan bowler to take two-wickets in the England innings, one of which was current England captain Joe Root.

In January 2021, he made his test debut for Pakistan against New Zealand at Christchurch.

Zafar will be available for selection to play in the Second XI match at Rockhampton Cricket Club against Glamorgan on Monday 23 August. This match will be played behind closed doors.

Zafar will play 4 County Championship games

I hope the lad returns to fulfil the promise he showed in his earlier days. His debut in NZ was one of the most ineffectual I have seen in recent times from a spinner. He needs to watch videos of himself as an U19 bowler and get back with the spin required

Zafar Gohar will be a permanent fixture of Pakistan team in 3-4 years time if he keeps his focus and hard work.

Score is 90/6 and he is not out on 3.

This is his opportunity to get noticed. Its starting to get chilly in England and with cloud cover it wont be easy for batsmen or spinners.

Tough task.

PK is desperate for late order AR that could bat at 8/9. But as I have said many times ZG isn't the bowler we saw almost ready for International cricket back in 2015

Northants 92/7 in the second innings at stumps on Day 3.

Zafar Gohar hasn't been given a chance to bowl yet by Chris Dent, as the seamers have done all of the damage.

Playing in the Glamorgan vs Gloucestershire, Division 2 today

At the moment, 6 overs for 19 runs

3 wickets for 190 runs so far in the County Championship.

Finding it tough going at the moment.

averaegs nearly 40 for central punjab with the ball, so dont see hows he'll do significantly better in county. county batsmen struggle more against leg spin than orthodox sla.

i hope he does well, but it seems like a strange selection for gloucestershire.

Zafar doing well - 2/3 in 3 overs so far

Should look to move to England. Won’t get respect in Pakistan and would rather be ignored until he’s 35

Good to see he's playing in a domestic competition abroad good learning experience

Zafar Gohar in Gloucestershire vs Durham, Division 2

Taken 4/50 in 15 overs

5-50 and 6-51, plus 30 runs in between.

He’s really come good in England.

The evidence suggests he’s ready for Test cricket. And he’s a decade younger than the current spinners.

14 wickets in 94 overs, average 16.85, with three five wicket bags and one ten wicket match.

I bet he still won’t get selected for the next test series and we will still persist with Yasir Shah.

2 matches are enough to judge?

We already have Nuaman Ali Yasir Shah and Sajid Ali no need for gohar yet
Nauman Ali is 35 next month and Yasir Shah is officially 35.

Now is the perfect time to turn the page.

Outside Asia, play either Zafar Gohar (26) or Shadab Khan (22), as much for their batting as their bowling.

In the UAE or India, play Shadab at 7, Zafar at 8, with Sajid Khan at 9.

In Pakistan, play Sajid at 9, Faheem Ashraf at 8 and Shadab at 7.

Spinners can play alot longer than fast bowlers numan has a couple of years in him.

I’m sure Nauman does have two years left in him, but we have just seen Zafar’s potential for development.

Give him two years of Test experience now, and come the 2023-25 World Test Championship you will have a 28 year old spinner with 30 wickets in 10 Tests, rather than needing to replace a 37 year old.

He has potential definitely but we should use him when conditions are in his favour and grow his confidence that way.do you remember how he did when he last played a test match for Pakistan.he can bat which is also good.

We turned the page when we selected musa and naseem and what were the results.
.
Naseem was a reasonable selection on the basis of first class performances - remember his dismissal of Fawad Alam?

Musa had no first class record to justify his selection and was an outrageous selection in Test cricket.

But Zafar Gohar has done everything that anyone could have hoped for in the county championship and it makes no sense at the start of a new World Test Championship cycle to pick a 35 year old ahead of a 26 year old who has performed so well in county cricket.

Well he needs to outperform all the baba spinners in the upcoming domestic 4 day season to really justify his place.
