Derbyshire sign Mohammad Amir for 2024 season

Derbyshire have signed former Pakistan fast bowler, Mohammad Amir, as an overseas player for the first half of the 2024 season.

Amir, 31, will be available for the first half of the LV= County Championship fixtures of the 2024 season, as well as the entire Vitality Blast group stage.

Regarded as one of the finest Pakistan quicks of his generation, Amir claimed 259 international wickets in 147 matches across all formats, including 119 Test dismissals and best figures of 6-44 against West Indies in 2017.

He was a key member of Mickey Arthur’s Pakistan side which won the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, with Amir claiming 3-16 in the final, dismissing Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli.

In his career, Amir has claimed 266 first-class wickets at an average of just 22.63, while he has 287 Twenty20 dismissals to his name, taken all over the globe at 22.28 and an economy rate of 7.12.

Amir is heralded as a must-have player in T20 tournaments worldwide, and he also has experience of the English domestic game, having had spells with Essex and Gloucestershire in 2017 and 2022 respectively.

Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, said: “Mohammad is a world-renowned fast bowler and someone who I am delighted to bring to Derbyshire. He will lead our attack in red ball and T20 for the first half of next season and I’m so excited to see what he will produce.

“I know all about his quality, he has been a big-game player throughout his career and that’s something I’ve seen first-hand. I know the Derbyshire supporters are going to love seeing Mohammad charging in.”

Amir added: “I’ve enjoyed my experiences of county cricket in the past and joining up with Mickey, who I’ve had so much success with internationally, is something I’m looking forward to.

“The County Championship is so special and I’ve always enjoyed playing first-class cricket in England. I’ve spoken to Mickey about the quality in the squad and I want to put in the performances to help Derbyshire challenge in red and white ball cricket next summer.”

I admire him as for me he's one of the best coached I have worked with.

When I was working with him, I felt that there was no match for the belief he has for the players and the confidence he has in them.

When my manager told me about the opportunity at Derbyshire, I asked him to go for it because Mickey is there so I know him well and also know how he works with the players.

I think it's all about mutual respect and when you have a good environment in the dressing room, as a player your job is only to do go there and uh do well for the team.

All I'm hoping , Pakistan team will sort out its persona issue ( without much hope, realistically ) and will bring back Amir and Imad for the next years T20 world cup when some of the games will be played in USA. Planning to watch many of the Pakistan team matches in the stadium and would love to see Pakistan beating India and to be a title contender. At 32 Amir will be at the top of his game by then .

Mohammad Amir will not join-up with Derbyshire for the start of the season and the Club has begun the search for an overseas replacement.

The 31-year-old fast bowler has made the late decision to return to international cricket and is expected to shortly be named in the Pakistan squad for their home series against New Zealand, starting on 18 April. This precedes the ICC T20 World Cup, which begins in June, delaying his arrival at The County Ground until the end of that tournament.
Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, said: “While this is disappointing on the eve of the season, I respect Mohammad’s decision and following recent conversations with the Pakistan Cricket Board, I know he had aspirations to return to international cricket if the opportunity would arise.

“The Club and player are keen to see him join-up with Derbyshire at the end of the T20 World Cup for those final six Vitality Blast group games and discussions are already underway.

“In terms of an early season replacement, there are a few options we can explore and I’ve had encouraging conversations already today, but we won’t rush into a knee-jerk decision.

“We have a talented squad here at Derbyshire and have strengthened well over the winter. Our pre-season preparations have been the best I’ve seen in my time here and we’ve already got competition in the bowling attack going into April.”
