[VIDEOS] The Shaheen Shah Afridi comeback after injury thread

Speaking in an interview, Mohammad Amir stated that he has seen the left-handed batter play in leagues and international cricket, and he has the ability to hit big shots and score a fifty.

"If he continues to work on his skills and believes that he can improve his batting, then definitely. Practice makes perfect. I saw that he can hit long sixes and also scored a fifty."

Butler would handle a fully fit Shaheen too. In fact most English top order batters would.

There's more chance Shaheen of overtaking Wasim Akram than this happening.

Shaheen is a much better new ball bowler than Wasim, Waqar and Imran ever were. They were all beneficiaries of ball tampering. Their primary source of wickets was from reverse swing.

If Shaheen was playing in the 80s or 90s he would've undoubtedly finished ahead of those guys as the best Pakistani bowler of all time. Ball tampering was easy to get away with back in those days so there's no reason why he wouldn't be able to reverse it back then.

If Shaheen can somehow master bowling at the death in white ball cricket, he will overtake Wasim Akram.

I find his backing of Babar and his behaviour on Tik Tok (in the past) cringe but as a cricketer, he is Pakistan's best player by a country mile. He's the only player in the side who's actually ATG material.

Babar will only be ATG in ODIs. He doesn't have enough runs away from home in tests and he's a mediocre T20 player.

Bad day out for Shaheen today. 0/47, taken to the cleaners for 3 sixes in an over from Pollard.

What a beautiful beating he took today by Pollard

Satisfaction in those sixes!

Shaheen needs improve on bowling at the death if he wants to overtake Wasim Akram as the best white ball bowler of all time.

Got murdered by Pollard should have changed his length or trying something else.

Won the PSL, now has a county deal with Notts Outlaws.

Great to see that things are on the up for Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Should not be playing t20 cricket instead he should targeting the longer format.

Happy Birthday to Shaheen - Lots of hopes for him in the coming year!

Nice to see him regain some of his old form but he still isn't back to his best. Hope he can be the demon he was pre-injury in this year's World Cup.

Good wicket but he isn’t anywhere near his best and he gets worse as the game and series progresses.

Pace is certainly down by a good 7-10 KPH but such is the quality of Shaheen that he still gets wickets in his first few overs.

Definitely not ready for 10 overs yet.

100% PCB need to take action now or he could be out or half baked for the WC

Pace still down.

Congratulations to Shaheen for his 50th T20I cap in the 3rd T20I vs NZ

What's this guy doing trying to be an all rounder? He is a number 11 batsmen. Just because he can hit a few sixes every once in a while, it doesn't mean he can bat. He needs to focus on bowling only.

Hate to say it but he is a shadow of his former self.

He will lose us games with his death bowling.

He isn't a number 11 but I would say more like a nunber 9/10

Shaheen's batting is progressing very well. I have no problem with him coming up the order to practice his hitting against C grade sides in meaningless bilaterals.

He'll make Pakistan's bonafide number 8 in white ball cricket his own.

Why are people obsessed with his batting. His bowling form is worrying now. He hasnt got his pace back and that has rendered him a little ineffective. Pakistan needs Shaheen the bowler. Dont need a Sam curran/ Irfan pathan type.

It's Hasan Ali part 2.

In the end Hasan Ali ended up forgetting how to bowl.

Same thing happened to Irfan Pathan.

Shaheen doesn't need to be anything more than a number 9 for us. Batting should not cross his mind as being his responsibility whatsoever.

He clearly enjoys batting and is trying to force the issue. But with power comes responsibility.

And with that responsibility he will sacrifice his main purpose - taking wickets with the ball.

We don't need Shaheen to be a number 8. We need him to be a strike bowler.

Hopefully this experiment will end as quickly as it has begun.

I’d rather have his hitting as a luxury at no 9 than all this forced all rounder thing.

Get your pace back - that’s the important thing.

Not the best outing again today - 1/40 in 4 overs

T20 is mickey mouse, games are always on a knife edge and won and lost in moments. He should not even be risking injury these games, with the WC coming he needs to focus on getting ODI form.

Back to his destructive best with the new ball?

Not a fan of him fielding like Jonty Rhodes.

Its not worth it Shaheen, its not worth it.

He’s turned into a very average bowler since his comeback from injury. Looks a shadow of the bowler prior to injury. Lost his pace cant bowl Yorkers any more. Well done pakistan for burning another fantastic bowler to the ground. Played him pointless games and looks like he’s finished no fire and penetration in his bowling sad to see him limping in and bowling 80mph pies. Rather have Amir back at this rate.

Useless mediocre bowler who needs to be booted out of every format ASAP

He is nowhere near his best but he is still a weapon with the new ball and Pakistan's best fast bowler across formats. That is how good he is and how superior he is compared to our other fast bowlers.

He gets hammered in every format. Time for the permanent ace to drop on him..

Not the first time he's been smashed at the death. The fact he is Pakistan's best bowler is scary and tells you how unreliable our bowlers are on average under pressure.

Hate to say it, but he has been trash.

Hopefully he gets back to his best, otherwise Pak will once again have lost another world class bowlers.

Absolutely stupid to have bowled him into the ground and needing surgery.

What happened Shaheen? Not a brand when the ball isn’t swinging boy?

Regardless of what anyone says - Amir and Naseem are our best bowlers

Shaheen has frequently gone missing under pressure. His record against the best teams is ordinary.

A lot of Pakistani players get hyped because of performances against minnows and against B, C playing eleven of big 5 teams.

Shaheen Afridi has achieved a special milestone as he completed 200 T20 wickets on Monday during the fifth T20I between Pakistan and New Zealand at Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Shaheen has become the youngest and quickest (143 matches) fast-bowler to achieve the landmark. The record was previously held by South African pacer, Kagiso Rabada, who took 146 matches to achieve the milestone.

The 23-year-old completed 200 scalps, when he removed Tom Latham on his first delivery in the aforementioned match.

Rashid Khan is on top of the list when it comes to bowlers, who are quickest to claim 200 wickets. Pakistan’ Saeed Ajmal is second on the overall bowlers’ list, followed by Shaheen, Rabada and Umar Gul.

Fewest matches to reach 200 T20 wickets:

134 – Rashid Khan

139 – Saeed Ajmal

143 – Shaheen Afridi

146 – Kagiso Rabada

147 – Umar Gul

Shahid Afridi on Shaheen Shah Afridi's bowling:

"Consistency in line and length is crucial in winning matches. While Shaheen started strong, he faltered when it mattered most, bowling at the wrong areas"

Have you got stats to back up your claim regarding non performance against A team playing xi in t20s ?

Good move to give Shaheen a break in the 2nd ODI - should be rested a for another 2 games.

Plays all the T20 games and all the PSL games, but sits out after playing one ODI. It tells you exactly just how much Pakistani players care about ODI and test cricket.

Could be a good idea to ease him in. Give him some four over spells then get him to bowl ten. Not everything has to be taken negatively. The goal is to get him in shape for the world cup.

Shaheen was Pakistan's best bowler in the 2019 WC, 2021 WT20 and 2022 WT20. In the latter event he wasn't anywhere near 100% fit.

The best advice I can give you is to perhaps assess your posts before being so quick to hit the post reply button next time.

Shaheen bowling 130kph pies is a sad sight to see. No where near the bowler he was prior to injury.

Important point to note is Shaheen is at his best when bowling those 140kph inswinging Yorkers and knocking batsmen over when opening the bowling. That’s when you know he’s at his lethal best Haven’t seen none of that

A complete shadow of the bowler he was and it’s sad to see at the mere age of 23 he’s sadly finished. He’s been rushed back from injury and been burnt to the ground by the PCB.

Kept on playing pointless series after series and game after game when he should have been looked after to regain full fitness like India are doing with Bumrah right now and not rushing him back. Watch when Bumrah comes back he will be at his best bowling 140 kph + as India are going through the proper procedure and not rushing him back like pakistan have done. Soo angry

I might be wrong but in my opinion, like other promising Pakistani cricketers success had got into the head of Shaheen. We have this cultural problem of praising and making someone a hero after one or two performances. People calling Shaheen the best fast bowler in the world is just absurd. Yes, he has the talent and ability to be a match- winner, but then reaching the same class as Imran, Wasim and Waqar will take a lot of hard work and dedication.

Shaheen's father- in law had the same problem. He was made into a cricket legend after one or two blue moon performances. The result, Shahid Afridi despite highly talented didn't bother to improve his game and got selected time and time again for his inconsistent and mediocre performances.

It's too early to say about Shaheen but this is his first real test. Does he has the ability to work hard, analyse his game and come out a better cricketer. Time will tell.

Its up to him. If he wants to play the hundred and vitality blast as opposed to working on his pace then he has his priorities wrong

Nothing like the Shaheen of old, he seems to be struggling to bowl quick.

Wicket at crucial time - Latham in the 4th ODI

Great ball. I believe this is the 8th time Shaheen has dismissed Latham, that's got to be some sort of record on its own.

Shaheen was bowling in the 140s in this match. He's making slow but steady post-injury progress.

It is tough to come back from serious injuries.Shaheen is still not at the same level as he was before he got injured. His work load should be managed properly. He doesn’t need to play every match.England don’t play Mark Wood in every series.

Roughly 5 to 7 kph slower than his best but still threatening. He may have a very long career like Southee, Broad etc relying on his cricketing intelligence rather than pace.

Could have easily gotten a couple more wickets today. Some of those yorkers were cms away from the stumps.

He'll be fine.

This is his first series back after a major injury, if he was an absolute idiot, he’d be bowling at full tilt every ball. Shaheen is probably capable of cranking it up, but why should he risk it. His pace fine, he needs to understand the load his body is experiencing and take it from there / keep building

Operating and throwing down 128kph pies like I said a few days ago looks an absolute shadow of the bowler he once was.

If he doesn’t regain his pace soon will be cannon fodder and I’m tempted to bring back Amir in place of him for the World Cup atleast he’s still got the bowling smarts to crack it to 135 kph.

Becoming a line and length bowler , trying to prolong his T20 career . Will retire from test cricket in near future and then from ODI's , way to go .

Clearly he's been down in pace than what he was prior to injury. Mostly in the 130kph-135kph range.

He's not putting in much effort with the WC near, but hopefully he can use the time after this series to get back to full fitness as he's playing a fair bit of cricket for Notts (T20) and then the hundred so needs to get back to what he was before in terms of pace and control.

“It is tougher to bat against Shaheen than Starc or Boult,” Fakhar Zaman said in an interview with the PCB

I hope he is using this time off wisely for rehabilitation. He has not looked the same for a while, and there are a couple big tournaments on the horizon.

When you’re coming back from a major injury, that too when you were rushed into a tournament, it’s best to adjust the intensity incrementally and review performance, at least that’s what you’d hope. Some would have you believe, these guys are washed if they knew how they worked during net sessions.

Regardless, Shaheen has valuable skill beyond his pace. I saw nothing majorly wrong upon his return, his action is still the same, he hasn’t lost skill with the ball either. He might be tentative with regards to how much he should push himself and that’s fine, as he rediscovers his limits.

Ravi Shastri:

That’s the concern, you want him fit. He is such a world class operator but you want him fully fit. He is such an important cricketer, you think should we rush him for the World Cup. Then you do that and then lose him for four months after that. Much like Shaheen Afridi. Pakistan rushed him into that T20 World Cup and he has not played till just recently. He was out for four months,” Shastri said in an interaction with the Week.

“Thin line you draw about being greedy and wanting to play and the individual has to think about himself. Sometimes you want to go back to the field and it can be a costly error. It’s something you have got to look at. I think there is Shami and Siraj so there is experience. You don’t need too many fast bowlers in India. It is more the spin department. That is also covered with Jaddu, Axar, you’ve got a few leg spinners around like Chahal, Kuldeep, Bishnoi. So you have enough depth there,” he added.
