Heard before that when a fast bowlers bowl with pace and aggression, whole country backs them. Heard a fast bowler can lift whole team by aggressive and positive attitude. Heard fast bowling brings life in cricket. Today I watched all these things live. Today all cricket followers enjoyed watching fast bowling at its best. I'm watching every game, but still I never such quality pace bowling on a pitch that have no assistance to fast bowlers. South Africa were cruising nicely, then came Pak fast bowlers and dismantle them ruthlessly and SA could score only 33 and lost 7 wickets. Watched S Akhtar doing similar things. But today it was from both ends. Kudos to Shaheen and Hassan for this memorable spell 0f fast bowling , I'm sure this will inspire millions of cricketers.

Definitely was a treat to watch for the viewers. Getting SA from 241/3 to 274 all out was impressive stuff.

some serious help from Imran Butt in slips

i bet half of them would have been dropped if it was some1 else in there

I dont think this was a spell to remember .... but was def good

Akhtar 05 vs England had fantastic memorable spells. I will never forget that series.

good spell today due to effectiveness but when it comes to hostility, does not match the following two fast bowling displays i remember after all these years:

1. wasim and waqar bowling in tandem to steve waugh in rawalpindi in the second test of 1994 series. i hated watching s.w. bat due to his boring batting style where to minimize risk, he limited his scoring shots. after this match however, i began to see him in a new light and with a new found respect. wasim and waqar went at him full tilt and landed numerous body-blows. yet he did not flinch. took the hits as if no big deal and nearly got a 100 before waqar got to him. many observers talk about waqar's lack of performance against australia but this was impacted by the fact that waqar only played two matches against australia at home. in those two tests, he took 10wkts @ around 25. here is mention of that spell which curiously talks about intimidation of a top order batsman:

From an article:

"...Wasim defied a back injury to bowl with great hostility on a well-grassed bouncy pitch. Some observers, but not the umpires, considered Wasim had intimidated Waugh, but Waugh came through the crisis magnificently, and was cruelly deprived of his century when he played on to Waqar Younis for 98...."

a remarkable facet of this series was the incredible number of catches dropped by australia. dont think i have catching display worse than that produced by the aussies in that series and that is saying something given i am a pakistani cricket fan.

2. shoaib and sami against south africa in lahore for the first test of 2003 series: quite possibly the fastest bowling combo i have ever seen with both operating comfortably and consistently over 90mph. shoaib ultimately got to kirsten (another boring s.w. clone) and smashed his face. dont think i have seen a player with so much bleeding after being hit. unlike s.w., kirsten had to retire but remarkably came back to bat in the next innings and almost pulled rabbit out of the hat. but pak was not to be denied partly due to clutch performance by pakistani openers in a difficult chase.

the series itself was probably one of the most competitive series i have ever seen. shoaib was banned for the second test after s.a. complained to referee about shoaib's swearing. pak would have likely lost the second test had kirsten not dropped a sitter while fielding on fine leg. i have enjoyed the current series but at the same time, i am sad to see lack of fire displayed by some saffers. their predecessors were cut from a different cloth. hopefully it is a temporary thing and that we get to see a repeat of 2003 series again.

Beautifully written! Great choices also.

The Pindi test against Aus is what Rashid Latif always alludes to for how quick Wasim bowled to Waugh. In fact the latter mentions it as the fastest spell he ever faced. Unfortunate though i was just a year old at the time, and there are no highlights of that spell available anywhere.

However, I do remember the lahore test vs South Africa. Shoaib was insanely quick in that and hit 100 mph while bowling to Boucher in the 2nd innings.
Sami too bowled very quick, and with Rashid in the team, he always felt at home.

In the first innings Shoaib reversed it; still remember him bowling a 96 mph reverse-swinging yorker to Mckenzie (another S.W type of plsyer)
In the 2nd inmings, he made a resounding impact, dismissing the top order of the ilk of Gobbs, Smith, Kallis and Mckenzie through short balls on the deadest of tracks possible.
There are highlights of that test on youtube.

I remember that spell too....That probably was the first time or so they were showing pak series on a cable network in India, I remember it so clearly as it was peak winter and I was a shivering under blankets but was awestruck at the prowess of W and W as we had no one to match them. the two w's picked off Waugh's various body parts like as if he was a dart board and they were throwing darts at him. I think Steve got to 96 and then fended off a delivery headed for his throat which hit his glove, his bat handle dropped down hit his ankle and then dislodged a bail. I still remember Steve glaring at that bail, he was almost saying if I can withstand so much pain and body blows why cant u puny thing stay in your place??!!! Wasim especially was very difficult to handle as he had late swing from impossible angles and there was one bal lin that spell which he bowled wide of crease round the wicket-started on 6th stump outside off , pitched on 4th stump and moved so much, cut SW in half and the keeper had to dive on the leg side to catch it. What magic from the 2 W's....

The 2 W's destroying England in 92 although Waqar's spells were a bit more spectacular.

And if you're talking ODI's, who can forget the other W? The great Wahab's fiery spell against Australia WC 15 only for the Rahat to drop dolly and with it diminish a million dreams.

In modern times, the most memorable spell will probably be Mitch Johnson's Ashes series back in 13/14 where he smashed England to pieces. He followed this up with another great performance against South Africa in South Africa.

So many by the classic West Indies sides of the 70's and 80's. Too many to remember.

No need to try and talk this one down.

When kids in 20 years are remembering epic spells, they might mention this one. I think that's great. Certainly one of the great reverse swing spells- capping a comeback from the kind of back injury that has destroyed how many- a dozen?- Pakistani fast bowlers before.

He had the ball talking, the batsmen walking and he has a swagger for fans to enjoy. Enjoy the spell.

Maybe for Pakistani fans considering how embarrassing our fast bowling has been for years, but the cricket universe in general will not remember it because it was nothing special.

South Africa does not have a strong batting lineup at the moment.

Cummins-Hazlewood against India at Adelaide and Anderson against India today is what you call memorable, one for the ages spell.

However, I don’t blame Pakistani fans because their standards are very, very low these days and it does not take much to excite them, such is their desperation.

Oh for the Love of God, once just please don't hate just to hate.

If this was done by India, you would be praising it non stop.

I used to respect you for being an objective person, but you have turned into a serious hater

Seriously GOAT gill was castled today by a snorter from Anderson

Anderson's spell today was one to remember. Absolute masterpiece.

Anderson is an all time great if anyone else thinks otherwise just does not understand how hard it is for a fast bowler to get 600 plus wickets and still be rattling oppositions at the age of 38. Also Hassan’s spell was extremely good as well but wouldn’t be remembered for ages neither will Anderson’s be because England were already favorites to win at that time but again the stumps flying mountage was beautiful to watch. These were little kids infront of daddy Anderson.

There is nothing to hate. If Pakistan becomes a top team like India and achieves number 1 ranking for 4 years, wins twice in Australia Babar wins 33 Test matches, I will also praise them non-stop.

I am sorry if I have higher standards and don’t do bhangra over a home win against a weakened South African side.

Besides, most people didn’t even take note of the performance yesterday so there is no question of if being memorable.

The neutral fans were occupied with India vs England. When two top teams play, no one is interested in watching average players like Pakistanis and most South Africans.

This thread is over the top and build on exaggeration.

Then please explain Indias loss to england. Dont go on about poor selection of nadeem and root being in the form of his life. Even with nadeem there india had ashwin who you rate as the best spinner currently. Not to forget how all indian batsmen are better at playing spin than theur english counterpart barring root and maybe stokes. How did the future tendulkar and the opener(rohit) better than anyone pak have ever produced manage to do squat against average bowlers like bess and leach.

I cannot repeat myself in every thread. I have already given my piece on this match in other, relevant threads.

This is what happens when you play at home. There is just something about it. Dubai, Sharjah, etc can never be Pakistan.

Not being able to play at home definitely took a toll on our cricket. But we should be able to see more such Performances from now on. It has definitely been a while we won a test on the back of good fast bowling performance.. (no offense to M Abbas but he was more of a slow
Medium pacer)

On one side van der is the most clutch sa crivketer ever. And on the other hand their batting is not so strong.
Faf
Qdk(who has a ceiling as high as gilly acc to you)
Van (who ll end their worldcup misery as per you)
Markram
If this is a bad lineup then sorry remove all the wickets that were taken against pak lineup in last 10 years

You missed out on quite a few, actually.
Markram: " as good as Babar but with more character and leadership qualities".
Faf: " better than all Pakistani batsmen apart from Babar".
Elgar: " substantially better opener than anyone Pakistan can offer in the same role".

Anderson's spell will be remembered.

We were focused on leach and bess but Anderson came out of syllabus. lol.

10 out of 10 for Hassan!

I like it. Thanks for calling him out.

As for the bowling, it was superb spell by two young bowlers, one who is only 20 years old. I do not think it is the best spell ever but one of the best in recent times, not too far off Archer v Australia and Jimmy just now in India.

Exactly people dont appreciate the fact that pitch was dead flat and they did a very decent jobe to pick up 9 wickets among them.

Its like lyon picking ten wickets in austraila against an attack that is supposed to be better at playing spin than fast bowling.

You jusr like to troll lmao, it was a good spell by both of them, and for remembering the spell. It all depends on how well their careers go. People dont remember one hit wonders.

10 out of 10 for Hassan!

Some very nice deliveries and some luck. Seems like low bounce was helping him. But most of his wickets were at speeds 133-136 kph. Can become more lethal if increases pace.

thank you for the thoughtful response.

short highlights of the series are available on yt and are a treat for connoisseurs of cricketing history. included in the highlights are the dismissal of steve waugh by a waqar short pitch delivery. little did we realize during that series that we were watching players who would become all-time aussie greats. warne was relatively well known but mcgrath was a complete novice who, on the surface, lacked the tools possessed by wasim and waqar. aussie batting was not too shabby either. it was such a shame when match fixing news broke out. no one who saw the series would have believed that salim malik was doing something shady. this was a heck of competitive series and the only thing that would raise eyebrows would be aussie catching. video contains some crazy stats on australian catching in pak.

as a Hasan fan, I’m very very proud and happy for him. He fell into his obscurity for a couple months, but the lad delivers when needed. He’s mentally strong for sure, a rare quality in Pak cricket these days. Helped win us champions trophy gold, and now came back very strongly. Say what you want, but SAF batsmen are not gully cricketers. No one is saying they are fab 4, but come on now, It’s not as if he was bullying WI, Bangla or Ireland with his wickets.

iA he keeps this form, same with Shaheen.

Great spell from Hassan Ali. Great to watch. Absolutely lethal. Any team would have struggled there.

thanks for the kind words. the yt video i referenced earlier does provide some glimpses of 1994 series. hopefully pcb can start some sort of a subscription channel which contains highlights of past matches.

The commentator mentioned 'channel bowling' - that's what Hasan Ali brought to the game.

Pakistan need channel bowlers - like Jimmy Anderson - in addition to the pitch up bowlers like Shaheen, Naseem, Haris etc.

Abbas was that bowler but his loss of pace has been a big setback.

Hasan's bowling and more importantly, his come back from Karachi has been superb.
