good spell today due to effectiveness but when it comes to hostility, does not match the following two fast bowling displays i remember after all these years:
1. wasim and waqar bowling in tandem to steve waugh in rawalpindi in the second test of 1994 series. i hated watching s.w. bat due to his boring batting style where to minimize risk, he limited his scoring shots. after this match however, i began to see him in a new light and with a new found respect. wasim and waqar went at him full tilt and landed numerous body-blows. yet he did not flinch. took the hits as if no big deal and nearly got a 100 before waqar got to him. many observers talk about waqar's lack of performance against australia but this was impacted by the fact that waqar only played two matches against australia at home. in those two tests, he took 10wkts @ around 25. here is mention of that spell which curiously talks about intimidation of a top order batsman:
From an article:
"...Wasim defied a back injury to bowl with great hostility on a well-grassed bouncy pitch. Some observers, but not the umpires, considered Wasim had intimidated Waugh, but Waugh came through the crisis magnificently, and was cruelly deprived of his century when he played on to Waqar Younis for 98...."
a remarkable facet of this series was the incredible number of catches dropped by australia. dont think i have catching display worse than that produced by the aussies in that series and that is saying something given i am a pakistani cricket fan.

2. shoaib and sami against south africa in lahore for the first test of 2003 series: quite possibly the fastest bowling combo i have ever seen with both operating comfortably and consistently over 90mph. shoaib ultimately got to kirsten (another boring s.w. clone) and smashed his face. dont think i have seen a player with so much bleeding after being hit. unlike s.w., kirsten had to retire but remarkably came back to bat in the next innings and almost pulled rabbit out of the hat. but pak was not to be denied partly due to clutch performance by pakistani openers in a difficult chase.
the series itself was probably one of the most competitive series i have ever seen. shoaib was banned for the second test after s.a. complained to referee about shoaib's swearing. pak would have likely lost the second test had kirsten not dropped a sitter while fielding on fine leg. i have enjoyed the current series but at the same time, i am sad to see lack of fire displayed by some saffers. their predecessors were cut from a different cloth. hopefully it is a temporary thing and that we get to see a repeat of 2003 series again.
