Heard before that when a fast bowlers bowl with pace and aggression, whole country backs them. Heard a fast bowler can lift whole team by aggressive and positive attitude. Heard fast bowling brings life in cricket. Today I watched all these things live. Today all cricket followers enjoyed watching fast bowling at its best. I'm watching every game, but still I never such quality pace bowling on a pitch that have no assistance to fast bowlers. South Africa were cruising nicely, then came Pak fast bowlers and dismantle them ruthlessly and SA could score only 33 and lost 7 wickets. Watched S Akhtar doing similar things. But today it was from both ends. Kudos to Shaheen and Hassan for this memorable spell 0f fast bowling , I'm sure this will inspire millions of cricketers.

1. wasim and waqar bowling in tandem to steve waugh in rawalpindi in the second test of 1994 series. i hated watching s.w. bat due to his boring batting style where to minimize risk, he limited his scoring shots. after this match however, i began to see him in a new light and with a new found respect. wasim and waqar went at him full tilt and landed numerous body-blows. yet he did not flinch. took the hits as if no big deal and nearly got a 100 before waqar got to him. many observers talk about waqar's lack of performance against australia but this was impacted by the fact that waqar only played two matches against australia at home. in those two tests, he took 10wkts @ around 25. here is mention of that spell which curiously talks about intimidation of a top order batsman:

the series itself was probably one of the most competitive series i have ever seen. shoaib was banned for the second test after s.a. complained to referee about shoaib's swearing. pak would have likely lost the second test had kirsten not dropped a sitter while fielding on fine leg. i have enjoyed the current series but at the same time, i am sad to see lack of fire displayed by some saffers. their predecessors were cut from a different cloth. hopefully it is a temporary thing and that we get to see a repeat of 2003 series again.

The Pindi test against Aus is what Rashid Latif always alludes to for how quick Wasim bowled to Waugh. In fact the latter mentions it as the fastest spell he ever faced. Unfortunate though i was just a year old at the time, and there are no highlights of that spell available anywhere.

However, I do remember the lahore test vs South Africa. Shoaib was insanely quick in that and hit 100 mph while bowling to Boucher in the 2nd innings.
Sami too bowled very quick, and with Rashid in the team, he always felt at home.

In the first innings Shoaib reversed it; still remember him bowling a 96 mph reverse-swinging yorker to Mckenzie (another S.W type of plsyer)
In the 2nd inmings, he made a resounding impact, dismissing the top order of the ilk of Gobbs, Smith, Kallis and Mckenzie through short balls on the deadest of tracks possible.

I remember that spell too....That probably was the first time or so they were showing pak series on a cable network in India, I remember it so clearly as it was peak winter and I was a shivering under blankets but was awestruck at the prowess of W and W as we had no one to match them. the two w's picked off Waugh's various body parts like as if he was a dart board and they were throwing darts at him. I think Steve got to 96 and then fended off a delivery headed for his throat which hit his glove, his bat handle dropped down hit his ankle and then dislodged a bail. I still remember Steve glaring at that bail, he was almost saying if I can withstand so much pain and body blows why cant u puny thing stay in your place??!!! Wasim especially was very difficult to handle as he had late swing from impossible angles and there was one bal lin that spell which he bowled wide of crease round the wicket-started on 6th stump outside off , pitched on 4th stump and moved so much, cut SW in half and the keeper had to dive on the leg side to catch it. What magic from the 2 W's....

And if you're talking ODI's, who can forget the other W? The great Wahab's fiery spell against Australia WC 15 only for the Rahat to drop dolly and with it diminish a million dreams.

In modern times, the most memorable spell will probably be Mitch Johnson's Ashes series back in 13/14 where he smashed England to pieces. He followed this up with another great performance against South Africa in South Africa.

As for the bowling, it was superb spell by two young bowlers, one who is only 20 years old. I do not think it is the best spell ever but one of the best in recent times, not too far off Archer v Australia and Jimmy just now in India.

Some very nice deliveries and some luck. Seems like low bounce was helping him. But most of his wickets were at speeds 133-136 kph. Can become more lethal if increases pace.

short highlights of the series are available on yt and are a treat for connoisseurs of cricketing history. included in the highlights are the dismissal of steve waugh by a waqar short pitch delivery. little did we realize during that series that we were watching players who would become all-time aussie greats. warne was relatively well known but mcgrath was a complete novice who, on the surface, lacked the tools possessed by wasim and waqar. aussie batting was not too shabby either. it was such a shame when match fixing news broke out. no one who saw the series would have believed that salim malik was doing something shady. this was a heck of competitive series and the only thing that would raise eyebrows would be aussie catching. video contains some crazy stats on australian catching in pak.

as a Hasan fan, I’m very very proud and happy for him. He fell into his obscurity for a couple months, but the lad delivers when needed. He’s mentally strong for sure, a rare quality in Pak cricket these days. Helped win us champions trophy gold, and now came back very strongly. Say what you want, but SAF batsmen are not gully cricketers. No one is saying they are fab 4, but come on now, It’s not as if he was bullying WI, Bangla or Ireland with his wickets.

thanks for the kind words. the yt video i referenced earlier does provide some glimpses of 1994 series. hopefully pcb can start some sort of a subscription channel which contains highlights of past matches.

Pakistan need channel bowlers - like Jimmy Anderson - in addition to the pitch up bowlers like Shaheen, Naseem, Haris etc.

Abbas was that bowler but his loss of pace has been a big setback.

Hasan's bowling and more importantly, his come back from Karachi has been superb.
