Not even sure if he goes down as a great Test batsman at this point…

He was averaging 44 till 2015 and had an insane peak between 2016-19 where he hit a number of double century at home and had a great year overseas in 2018. But after that he has lost the hunger. His test career is nothing outstanding to talk about.

In LOIs, it was no doubt outstanding the way he won matches and chased down 300+ totals was so amazing to watch and his peak was pretty long one too( from 2012-14 and then 2016-19).

In test cricket, he isn't even in top-5 Indian batsmen. Before him, I'd pick

1) Tendulkar
2) Sunny
3) Dravid
4) VVS
5) Vishwanath


In ODIs though, he is definitely in top-5 ODI cricketers for India, in no particular order

1) Tendulkar
2) Yuvraj
3) Kapil
4) Kohli

That was an unbelievable comment from Kohli. Someone as media savvy as him and the one who knows how to interact with media, this comment was least expected.

If ever there was a need to speak diplomatically, this was one such occasion.

Interested to see how Kohli performs in the one off Test against England soon. It might not go very well for him.

If money is a measure of achievements then it sums up India’s attitude.
 
Team India head coach Rahul Dravid brushed aside concerns about Virat Kohli's age and fitness and said the star batter is "doing what he needs to do" to come out of his lean patch of form. Kohli has not hit a century in international cricket since November 2019, but Dravid insisted that he only wants "match-winning contributions" from the 33-year-old and that does not necessarily have to be in the form of hundreds. He also said that Kohli's form is not due to a lack of motivation.

"I kind of disagree with you when you say he is in the wrong side of 30. He is probably in my opinion on the right side of 30," Dravid said in response to a question in a press conference ahead of the rescheduled fifth Test against England.

"I think he is an incredibly fit guy. He is one of the most hard-working guys I have ever come across. His desire and hunger. His whole attitude in looking after himself, his preparation and even just the way he just played the game at Leicester, batting in those conditions, scoring the kind of 50, 60 that he did," Dravid said.

Kohli hit scores of 33 and 67 during India's tour game against Leicestershire, and looked in good nick.

"He was keen on batting against Bumrah and all of these guys. So, I think he is ticking all the right boxes. He is doing what he needs to do to sort of come out of it," Dravid said.

"As players you go through these kind of phases. I don't think you need motivation to be very honest. Don't think in Virat's case it is lack of motivation. You go through phases like this at times. Sometime you bat well...it's not so much about focussing on those three figures but you know even a 70 in a difficult wicket in Cape Town...when we played at Cape Town, I thought that was very good innings," he said.

Kohli had scored a gritty 79 in Cape Town during India's tour of South Africa earlier in the year.

"It didn't convert into a three figures score but it was a good score," Dravid said.

"Obviously, a guy like him, the kind of standard that he set, the number of hundreds that he scored, people only see hundred as a success," he said on how Kohli has set the benchmark high for himself.

"From a coach's perspective, we only want contributions from him, we want match-winning contributions for him, whether that's a 50, that's a 60 on a wicket like that. Maybe tomorrow's wicket, may be a 60 or a 70 could end up being a match-winning performance or it may not, we might need a big score for him. But yeah, from our perspective, there is not a lot of focus on three figures and whether he gets it," Dravid said.

Time is running out fast for him. I used to be such a massive fan of him, still am. But sorry to say this lean phase has been going for too long now.

"See today, he hasn't scored a century for a long time now. I love watching Kohli and even he is a big player than me. But technically, he needs to work harder."
 
I just realized, Kohli's stock has fallen so low, people don't even react anymore when he gets out cheaply. Truly heartbreaking, Kohli and ABD were my favourite batsmen from the 2010s. This has to be the biggest fall from grace in over a decade.

India should honestly consider dropping him from tests, Kohli's services are no longer required.

His batting is seriously ordinary, and it’s also his personal conduct now which is becoming an issue. He comes across as really unprofessional and embarrassing out on the field.
 
Nasser with the analysis - Kohli has gone 120 innings in all formats without scoring a ton.

To think, had he continued along the incredible trajectory he'd been operating at, where he could have been at now - 70 tons; surely was to be the man to challenge Tendulkar's 100, 100s if anyone - seemingly unlikely now.
 
Similar batting style to Ponting, and a similar looking decline as well. Also similar personalities and had a penchant for an awful series.

No wonder us Aussies quite like Kohli

Never seen a top player regressing so badly. Point of no return. He should gracefully retire. Absolutely no confidence in him returning as his old self.
 
Very poor series for Kohli this. Averages 27 and scored 249 runs in 9 innings.

Rohit, Rahul, Pujara, Pant and Jadeja all have scored more runs than him this series.
 
He badly needs to play a couple of series against SL / Bangladesh, even Afghanistan to regain his form. Instead, he skips all those and plays directly against the likes of England and Australia, that too away from home. Absolutely idiotic.
 
Kohli doesn't seem like the player who will drag it on for much longer. I think he will retire post 2023 World Cup. What better way to retire after winning the team a World Cup at home ? Won't get a better chance now that he is on a terminal decline.

Also shows how difficult it is to maintain form for a long time when your body tires out with age. Puts the achievements of players like Tendulkar into perspective.
 
I was one of the many fans of Kohli who was predicting him to go past Tendulkar's 100 hundreds record.

The decline has been so sharp that not only that record looks safe, but it also shows how great was Sachin in terms of unparalleled longevity and consistency.

We are now witnessing a truly exceptional cricketer who probably had the freakiest peak in the history of the game on his terminal decline here. He is probably never coming back from this.

Never did Sachin say he has achieved everything in his mind that he wanted, if anything he regretted the 2005 test win which he missed against Windies.

Kohli is weak against swing.

English condition is probably the worst for Kohli.
 
He is done. Confidence is low.

I have watched this guy the day the started playing international cricket. I am a huge fan of his.

However, I can barely recognize the same batsman.

The biggest mistake he made is thinking that 77 he scored in a crucial iPL game for bangalore was reversal of his fortuntes. But what he really needed to do is take a break like Stokes for 6 months, refresh and then come back. He should have done this after the tour of Australia in 2020 or shortly after when India won.

They were on top.

He should have spent 6 months with his family and come back strong.

But he did not.

Ego got in the way and the problems, and now I am afraid it's too late.

He sacrificed his prime and Indian cricket over the last three years. He failed to build a team. He created rifts by not giving confidence to Ashwin who is a legend in his own right and very political. He favored mental midget like KL Rahul. He never recognized Ambati Rayudu or Manish Pandey in their middle order. Persisted with Rahane for a long time.

I dont know. Too many mistakes were made and he took unilateral decisions. Now its too late. He has lost the captaincy, lost control and soon he will be taken out of the team when Rohit returns. This was his chance to score and play a long innings. He did not.

It was pathetic for him to fight with Jonny Bairstow - the guy who has scored 3 centuries in 3 matches and played all match winning knocks. It shows that Kohli has lost it and instead of acting like a legend that he is, he is acting like a child.

What a shame and what a sad end.

Well good for Pakistan for next world cup I guess.
 
I am convinced that Kohli right now is only playing because of the sponsors and broadcasters, he should have been dropped and told to regain his form like Rahane, Pujara

loss of captaincy from all formats was the start
he is still playing as players like gill have not solidified their spots . in t20 , other players have now solidifified like sky ,kishan etc. note how the commentary is like cant play rahul, kohli and rohit in same t20 team. he will be pushed out of t20 first and rightly so

next comes odi - this is still the format he may reman till world cup

tests - rahane is out. pujara is still decent. with rahul, rohit and pujara and ayer at 5 , kohli at no 4 will face incumbent srk from mumbai shortly besides sky, bharat etc.

kohli though looked good in this match . the ball he got out to was unplayable
 
I can't say he looks bad while batting. It's a really weird one which is probably what puzzles him too. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong that he's doing. Some point out his insistence on playing well forward in England, but this same technique has helped pile runs on the previous tour.

There have even been 30s and 40s that have looked so good, reminiscent of his pomp, some of them very significant and important for the team.

The only thing I can think of is, he's had some rotten luck in the last few years. The only ball from a bowler that jags back, crazy unprecedented turn, amazing catching. But having watched almost every Kohli innings over the years, I can say this is luck catching up. Because he's had an amazing run of luck earlier like where he'd get dropped by a fielder at some crucial point.

I guess my point is, I'm not ready to concede that he is finished. His head might be filled with different priorities now, but I don't think his skills have diminished. So those brutal chases or knocks might never happen again, but he will remain a more-than-deserving member of this team.

Although — VK rarely “looks” finished. Conversely he tends to appear really up for the contest and be solid in his defence. He also scored some sumptuous boundaries yesterday before getting out. It was a killer delivery from Stokes that took his wicket as well — Nasser said that he did well yesterday to even edge such a snorting ball.

Compare this with other “former” greats, such as Ricky Ponting and others who could barely see the ball anymore by the time they took retirement.

So it’s really odd that Kohli despite his alertness and quick reflexes at the crease just can’t seem to get a score, certainly not a 100 and barely even a 50 nowadays, when he does not have the “appearance” of a terminally out of nick batsman.

It's well known and pretty obvious now that Kohli's priorities have completely changed in the last couple of years.

He doesn't seem to have the same hunger, passion and determination he used to have before 2020.

I remember Nasser Hussain once saying in a pre-WC 2019 show that Virat is probably itching himself to go to Lord's and smash a WC hundred. That is the kind of hunger he had before, which we just don't see anymore.

He skips the series he should be playing to get his form back, and when he comes up against the big guys, the same struggles reappear.

He remains the GOAT ODI batsman for me at the moment, but looking at how things are going currently, a disastrous WC 2023 campaign could be around the corner for him if he doesn't wake up from here.

At the end of the day, WC campaigns is what make or break cricketers' legacy, and Sachin still trumps him on that front.
 
Why is Kohli unable to find that second wind that players like Tendulkar and Sangakkara found in their 30s?

Incredibly Tendulkar has been out or left stranded in the 90s nearly 30 times in Test amd ODIs with 3 or 4 99s lol.

His issues are not on-field, but off the field. Bollywood influence ruined him.

From recording a poor guy throwing garbage & confronting him & putting the clip on the interweb, going extra goody-goody with arch rival team, giving idiotic statements, reacting as if everytime he gets out, it's some ball of the century & so on. The guy has clearly lost it. It isn't the Virat who went on to help his team the next day after his Dad's demise.

Kohli's achilles heals has consistently remained the ball on offstump or just outside. Inspite of 14 years of international cricket he has still not been able to iron it out. He still goes hard at the ball. Tendulkar in comparison played the ball so late and with soft hands, he would not consistently be caught struggling against the outswinging ball being caught by the Keeper or in the slips. In that famous 240 he made against Australia in 2003-04, he did not play a single cover drive because he was struggling on off stump, that is the discipline of the man, it is a joke to compare Kohli with the master.
 
Kohli in a bit of a bother. He will recover and go on to be an all time great

agreed. initially people used to say that kohli is mentally tougher than sachin

it is now becoming obvious that opposite is true.

Players do go backwards in their thirties, but with Kohli it is a faster decline than I expected.

That bears out Mohammad Asif’s observation that a technical flaw is plaguing him.

Basically Kohli has three options. Take on someone like Asif as a specialist coach and come back for two years and average 55. Or keep playing for your sponsors and destroy your legacy. Or retire and play only IPL and maybe BBL too.

It’s better for the balance of India’s team that he go, especially as Rohit is himself geriatric. But if I were Kohli I would be ringing up Asif and asking him to join me for a month in the nets in Dubai or England.

absolutely spot on.

and that is why i think it was such a disservice for pakistan for asif to do what he did and ban himself.

if he wanted money, we (the public) could have raised it for him!

but his brain, intellect and overall aura was once in a generation, if not once in a lifetime. it really is a shame.

He's henpecked and not as bothered about cricket anymore, don't think there's anyway back now, Asif or no Asif.
 
Age and declining reflexes do play a part but no match practise no first class cricket no runs under the belt especially during a run of bad form are all factors in Kohlis decline.

To regain his touch he seriously needs to play some FC cricket and score a few hundreds then make a big score against an easier opponent in international cricket on a flat pitch.

With some confidence and runs under his belt the chances of success are higher even at his age as most of his ability should still be there.

If he continues to play T20s then go straight into tests against the best teams outside Asia then he should expect more struggles ahead.

Virat Kohli only managed scores of 11 and 20 against England and drops three places to 13th in the (ICC Test) batting rankings.

Kohli, who is now just four months short of completing three years without an international ton, scored 11 and 20 in the recently concluded rescheduled Test against England that India lost by seven wickets. "The trick to play in England is to play as late as possible. Then you are allowing the ball to do its bit and then you are playing the ball. From what little I saw in the highlights, it seemed Kohli was looking to reach for the ball, trying to play the ball early," Gavaskar said on 'Sports Today'.

He pointed out that Kohli had enjoyed success in England in 2018 as he looked to play the ball very late. "Therefore, he was not looking like he was in 2018 when he was looking to play it very late around the off-stump."

Gavaskar feels the reason behind Kohli's new approach could be the dip in form and paucity of runs in recent years. These are times when one tends to play every ball and it is often fraught with danger.

"This could possibly be his issue because he hasn't been among the runs. When you are not in form, you look to play almost every ball, hit each one of them, in a bid to score runs. Maybe that's something that can he look at."

However, Gavaskar feels Kohli is also running low on luck. "But the first mistake he is making is turning out to be his last mistake. Maybe he is not having the run of the luck at the moment. I think you obviously plan a little bit, visualise what the bowler is going to do the next day. Therefore, you can stay outside the crease but you can go with a pre-meditated plan of batting, which means the bowler has to bowl the same line you are expecting," he said.

"If he doesn't bowl in those lines, you are in trouble."

Kohli had played on in the first innings off a Matthew Potts delivery, while in the second essay he was caught at first off a difficult delivery from Ben Stokes that suddenly kicked up from length.

"Cricket is always about instinctive action. And while you are giving yourself just that extra bit of preparation by trying to understand the bowler's strengths, at the end of the day, it's an instinctive game," Gavaskar added.

Odi matches will be his best chance to regain form.

In t20s it looks difficult for him unless he opens the innings or get to face more Powerplay overs.

Can't rule out possibility of Joe root like axed from t20 team if pant,sky, hudda puts pressure on selectors with notable performances.
 
What a loser Kohli is! A man who was in great form was dropped for him and this is what his contribution for the team is!

He has taken selfishness to a great new level.
 
India will be staring at another early exit in WT20 if passengers like Kohli continue to be a part of the squad.

His disrespectful attitude of late towards his team mates, opponents and the game in general over the last 3 years is badly reflecting on his batting. Don't think anyone should find him smiling whenever he gets out cheaply funny anymore. The guy is content with playing because of commercial sponsorship pressure and not having to work hard to earn his place in the side.

The opposition bowlers and fielders have also done well to dry up his scoring areas and singles whenever he comes to bat early on in the innings which puts him under pressure and he tries to hit over the top and gets out as a result.

tbh if he was pakistani my first thought would be he's pbly lopped 3 or 4 years off his age, but dunno how common that is India.

Kohli was well and truly on his way to scoring more than 100 international centuries.

Virat Kohli registered scores of 1 and 11 in the two T20Is against England and now skipper Rohit Sharma has said that the side always backs quality

Virat Kohli's poor run of form continued in the T20I series against England as he registered scores of 1 and 11 in the second and third T20Is respectively. In both the games, Kohli tried to be aggressive and take on the bowling from the get-go, but he was unable to stay at the crease for long. After the third T20I which India lost by 17 runs, skipper Rohit Sharma spoke to reporters during a press conference and he spoke about Kohli's form as well.

"It is not difficult for us as we do not listen to the outside noise. I don't know who the experts are. I don't even understand why they are called experts. They are watching it from the outside, they don't know what is going on inside. We are building a team, we have a certain thought process. A lot of deliberation goes behind it. There is a lot of thinking behind it. Boys are backed. Boys are given chances. People outside don't know all these things. It is not important what is going on outside," said Rohit.

"If you talk of form, it goes up and down for everyone. The quality of a player never goes down and we should remember that. When you make certain comments, you should always remember that the quality of a player does not go down. We back that quality. It has happened with me, it has happened with XYZ, it has happened with everyone, it is nothing new. When some player has done so well consistently for so long, that can't be written off in one or two series or one or two years. It takes people time to understand it completely, but those who are running the team know the importance of that quality," he added.

When asked about the aggressive approach being taken by Virat Kohli, Rohit said: "It's a bit of both (when asked if Kohli's approach is a team instruction or a personal choice). We, as a team, want to play in a certain way, and every player needs to buy into that thought process. Otherwise, you know, it's not going to happen for you. And all the players, all the batters, who are part of this squad, are willing to take that extra risk and go and see what extra they can do with the bat."

"It's important to find out within yourself, you know, to try and do different kinds of things. Unless you try it, you will never be able to find out. So I think it is something that we have been trying to do for a while now. Some days it might come off, some days it might not. But we don't want to be afraid of going in and taking that extra risk. That's how we're going to learn as a team and that's how we will move forward as a team. So it's in everyone's thought process, everyone is quite comfortable with that idea. So yeah, that's the kind of direction the team is going to move in."

When asked about the upcoming ODI series against England, Rohit said: "It is important for us to understand white-ball cricket properly. I mean 50-over cricket is an extension of T20 cricket. You might take slightly fewer risks than you do in T20s, but we have to take risks. It is not as if we won't take risks. We need to get used to playing freely. When you try to play freely, it comes with its failures both in individual performance and in team results, but you get to learn a lot from that."

"We are looking at the bigger picture, not the small picture. As it is, in India, we are used to two-and-a-half-hour pictures. All these matches are crucial for us because somewhere we need to change something, and we can see things have started to change slightly. The biggest takeaway from this series has been the approach of each and every individual who has played in this series for us. How they have come and relished the moment in the middle, taking on the opportunity, taking on the opposition, taking that extra risk. The mindset is something that we are trying to change, and they are willing to do that. They're willing to take that risk. And when I go and talk to certain individuals, I hear the same kind of response from them," he added.

Odi series is his best chance to buy some time in the middle and regain form.

I feel kohli will have at least one decent knock in upcoming odis against England. It may not be a match winning knock but he will succeed in scoring big fifty in supporting role to some other batsman.

I could be wrong but over last few games he seems to be in much better touch, would back him for few more if he does not take breaks.
