Virat Kohli - The Mega Discussion

Kohli shouldn't have said that.
but you still have no right to bash india for that when your own country has an equally pathetic record in australia

But why shouldn't he say that? I think Kohli is an arrogant guy but he still has every right to say that he believes they can beat Australia in Australia. He is trying to get a psych edge by saying that it can be done. I see nothing wrong with that. And in all likelihood he meant "we have done it (beat them in a match) before (in their home ground)" that is what happens when you take a quote and run with it. I'm sure he knows India has never beaten Aus in a series played in Aus before, then why would he claim that they have?

No. What I mean is he shouldn't have said that we have beaten them before (he probably meant beating them in a test) but it does come across like he is trying to say that we have beaten them in a series in australia before which is facually incorrect.

As per StatsGuru, I can see that India have embarrassingly never won a series in Australia despite touring for almost 70 years. In fact they have a most shameful record of 5 Tests won, 26 lost in these 70 years, which puts an end to any illusion that India are a competitive Test nation outside their shores (if poor Bangladesh were given so many opportunities as India, they would surely have won more than 5 Tests in 70 years).

So what on earth is this Kohli guy on about saying that his country has beaten Australia in their homeground before?

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...team=6;template=results;type=team;view=series

Newsflash for the Aussies.

We care about limited overs cricket even if you don't.

Thank God for Kohli not downplaying our strengths.

We won the ODI tri-series in 2008 against Australia and Srilanka, and this is what Kohli is referring to.

Indians lying through their teeth is nothing new. I remember Sehwag recalling some incident where he Tendulkar hit Akhtar for a six in a Test and then sledged him or whatever but that is nonsense because it was later proven that Tendulkar has never hit Akhtar for a six in Tests.

If he means a match then he should clarify rather make a fool of himself in the media for the second week running.

Since you've posted many times, and you agree ODI is the best format, why the surprise?

Kohli is referring to the 2008 tri-series where we stuffed them 2-0 in the final.

Well then its the perception of the reader. Yes he didn't say a Test match but he dint say a Test series either. Any sensible person will understand he meant a Test match, since they haven't beaten them in a series. If you and I know that then I'm sure he knows it too. Calling that 'lying' is OTT.

Please read. He meant an ODIseries. Unlike self-appointed purists, that matters to Kohli.

For me Tests = ODIs, but the timing of this suggests that he's talking about Tests and if not, he should clarify it. Right before the Test series why would you talk about Commonwealth Bank Final?

A pointless remark to make.

I don't see Kohli saying that we won a series in Australia. It is open to speculation. He might be saying about winning games in Australia which we have done in the last 10 years. We have won 2 tests in Australia during that period. Kohli is not a great captaincy material anyways. He talks a lot to media and it will inturn put pressure on this young team.

But where is the full link? In the cricinfo article, he didn't say those words or am I missing something

He is saying "we can compete with Aussies". He is a modern Indian cricketer brought up to play all formats. I suspect he just thought "We beat the Aussies" rather than "We beat the Aussies in Tests" and "We beat the Aussies in ODI" as two separate things.

True. But on the flip side, we had Dhoni who was very calm and not too aggressive with his media briefs. Burt what did we achieve under him? At Least let us see what kohli's aggression can bring to the table.

This is a slightly better effort than cars's post earlier this evening when he said that India had a 'worse' last tour of Australia where they lost 0-4, whereas Pakistan lost only 0-3 in their last affair there.

Onwards and upwards.

cars112 please post the link to this article, as I cannot find these words said by kohli.

Lol what? T20 WC win, Champions Trophy, CB series win in Australia, 2011 WC win, Test series win in NZ, Drawn Test series in SA and claiming number 1 test position and you ask what India achieved under his leadership?. Show me one captain who has that record in recent times. The last few years of our downfall has been attributed to all Dhoni. Even though he played a part in it, he cannot be blamed for all India's test failures. Our batting has been a joke in the last couple of years overseas and bowling has been bad too.

He's lost it. The constant hammerings have caused him to have delusions of grandeur. He certainly won't be celebrating Christmas having a romantic date with THE MIGHTY AND TALL ISHANT this year!

You look like bvery young to me. :D

There is more to cricket than just ODIs and T20s.

Dhoni is a pathetic defensive test captain. And has a very poor record outside India.

That NZ win was when we had a great team. SA we should have won. Not to mention his defensive captaincy and pathetic team selections that cost us so many matches outside the SC.

I am actually of the opinion that Kohli can be a very good captain for us overseas. He is aggressive like Ganguly, arguably our best overseas captain.

Very dissapointed with Kohli. Hope India lose the first test poorly and Indian fans realize why they need kuptaan kul :msd

:))) :)))) :))))

Thanks OZ - hadn't seen this gem of Kohli and Ishant's, err, rather close "bonding"...

Funny thing is that these new age Indian cricketers strut around the world thinking they are Kanye West or something but don't realize how pathetic they actually look.

Ganguly had peak form Dravid to rely on.And Kumble who was more than a decent spinner overseas unlike current guys.

And we didnt drop that many catches as we do now.

It was under Ganguly's captaincy (aggressive, attacking) that we learnt to win away from home after 12-13 years of complete disasters in Aus/ Eng/ SA/ WI. Even in the 1990's we had a great team. Srinath, Prasad Kumble were better attack than India ever had in the 2000's. Same with the batting with the likes of Azharuddin, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dravid. But we lost or drew at the best. Did not win a single match outside the subcontinent.

India's AWAY record is very poor now a days. Expecting a white wash of indian team. Although in ODIs they may win 1 match. But no double century there because series is not on dead indian soil.

I am not young and I am sure I am older than you. Achievements of the team is in all formats. Dhoni's accomplishments in ODI cannot be brushed away. There is a big learning from his ODI achievements. India have been a good ODI side over the last decade or so, thats the reason India have done well under him. Dhoni as a test captain did not have too shabby a record till the 2011 season. The decline of the entire team started there. It is not all Dhoni's fault. Yes he is a defensive captain. You people talk as if India are walking around with McGrath's and Warne's in the team and Dhoni is defensive with them. We have a poor attack and thats what happens when you have a poor attack. When your bowling is doing well Dhoni is aggressive, like the Lords test where he advised Ishant to bowl short. Just because a player talks a lot and show himself agressive, it will not make him Sourav. Lets see what he can do. Beating Zim 5-0 or beating SL 5-0 does not make him good captain. Dhoni would have achived that too.

This Australian side is not same as the Aussies from the past. This team looks very weak for me. No offense. I think India might take the series :runaway:

Did Kohli said he won a series?Nopes he didnt. But India has won test matches in Australia.

cars112

When was the last time Pakistan won a test match in Australia?

In 2009 the scoreline was 13-0

Still doesn't beat the foreplay with Angoors that some do on twitter :uakmal

Bhai I respect your views but the discussion itself was on tests especially away from home. i don't know why are you bringing ODIs and T20s into it.

Dhoni is India's best ODI captain and world's best finisher today. Period. He has won us all kinds of ICC tourneys, bilaterals and wins almost everywhere.

As far as tests are concerned, he is not even in top 5 India's test bats in recent times. Moreover, he is a pretty poor captain in tests with a very defensive mindset. More so in countries where we are traditionally weak like Aus/ SA/ Eng/ NZ.

He was asked how difficult it is to win a Test against Australia at their homeground. He replied that India has beaten Australia before(in a Test) at their homeground. So, they can do it again. Nowhere was a series win mentioned

What a batsman he is Superb!

I wonder where the Akmal cheer leaders are now who try to belittle his performances.

Alright, now is the time to act like a mature test batsman.

Don't go monkey on bowlers now, just stay their pile on.

Kohli is just cementing his test credentials, at his peak (3-4 years away) he will be best.

25-30 is the dominating peak for batsman.

After 30, it will be more accumulation than domination (the extent depends on batsman to batsman).

So Kohli has entered his best years already.

Now is the type to display his brutal force, tell the world why you are the best!

Really disappointed to see him throw away his wicket just after the hundred.

Excellent hundred, because of the scoreboard pressure. Shame he couldn't make it a big one. One of the few things missing in his batting.

Another squandered opportunity from him. Geez stop getting these worthless 100-120s. :banghead:

Maybe he was trying to jinx him :srt

Critics and haters used to take a dig at him saying that all his hundreds abroad have come after the series was decided and didnt have any real value.

Way to put that into rest :) What a hundred when under serious pressure both at a personal and team level. I am disappointed that he didnt return to the dressing room unconquered, but this would go a long way for him in this series (hopefully to the team as well).

Shades of Ganguly in 2003 at the Gabba - Indian captain under pressure scores a century and the series really kickstarted for India. Will history repeat itself? Can India compete and make their fans proud? Fingers crossed!

It wasnt a special innings or anything. It was a decent one where once again he flattered to decieve.

Very good knock that , could have been a great one had he mad it big .
People wont remember these knocks for a long time , he has to start converting ...hes still young , but needs to step up soon

Every test knock is special , more so the away ones ..if nothing his knock has helped us save the test .

No we havent saved the test yet. If saha & tailunt get out early tomorrow we'll still lose it.

He was well set but again got out in the 100-120 range like he has done 6 times before this.

It was a good one but if go on to lose, like we probably will, no one will remember it.

Dravid during commentary was saying that Kohli has spoken to him as how kohli himself sees it as a problem that he is not able to convert his scores to big ones.
But i found him struggling against the new ball in Harris' hands.Nevertheless good knock.

He'll be disappointed that he didn't get a 150+ score, but how in the hell in getting 115 "flattering to deceive"? Some of the junk that gets posted here.... sheesh.

Captain's knock. But this was one of the easier pitches in Australia. Let us see how does in other tests.
