'War' against government will only end after its fall, says Fazlur Rehman

Maulana Fazlur Rehman also leads funeral prayers, Hamdullah tells Fawad after nikah jibe

JUI-F leader Hafiz Hamdullah rushed to the defence of the chief of his party, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, on Saturday, after Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry said he should stick to solemnising marriages instead of getting into politics.

Noting that his "responsibilities" as a religious leader include conducting nikah proceedings and solemnising marriages, Hamdullah said: "Maulana Fazlur Rehman also leads funeral prayers, may it be political funerals or otherwise."

He went on to say that Fazl will "soon lead the funeral prayers of this puppet government".

Hamdullah, in a jibe of his own, said about Fawad Chaudhry that his political alignments are sometimes seen with Pindi, on other occasions with the Zardari House, and of late with Bani Gala.

He also pointed out that much like Fawad's divided self, the cabinet comprises those who are dual nationality holders, akin to being "aadha teetar aadha batair (half partridge and half quail)".

Earlier in the day, Fawad had taken a dig at Fazl, while addressing a media briefing in Lahore.

He said that Fazl, who is also the chief of the Opposition's Pakistan Democratic Movement, should solemnise marriages. "He is not cut out for politics."

He said the power of the votes of 20 million people brought PTI into power in the 2018 general election, adding that Fazlur Rehman could not win that power "even in the next 200 years".

After coming under fire for issuing a statement over the lynching of a Sri Lankan national in Sialkot, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazulr Rehman on Monday clarified that he "unconditionally condemns" the incident.

Speaking to the media before a meeting of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) leaders, Fazl said that while he condemned the tragedy, the question remains as to who would stop such incidents from occurring again.

"The state and the Constitution will have to become active [in dealing with such cases]," Fazl said, adding that even if his own party was in power, he would have still maintained that the government was at fault.

Fazl went on to say that "whenever an incident is related to religion, it is exceptionally highlighted [in the media]."

"In a bid to stop such incidents from occurring again, we will have to bring a unified national discourse to the fore," he said.

The PDM chief also said that he has never believed in forcing an ideology at gunpoint.

What did Fazl say earlier?

On December 4, Fazl — referring to the lynching — had said that while the incident was reprehensible and shameful, such incidents would continue if the state doesn't take action against blasphemers.

"The incident in Sialkot is reprehensible and shameful. There should be a comprehensive investigation. However, if the state does not take action against those accused of blasphemy, then such incidents will continue to happen," Fazl had said in a Twitter statement.

He went on to say that in the past, there had been a similar backlash against "government-sponsored fugitives accused of blasphemy."

"Under the guise of such incidents, the international establishment conspires against the religious class and tries to make the Islamic provisions of the Constitution controversial," he said.

"A comprehensive investigation should be carried out to find out who the people behind this are and what nefarious purposes they hold."

Ahsan Iqbal, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar call Fazl out
Senior PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal and PPP Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar on Sunday took to Twitter and called Fazl out on his statement.

"With due respect, Maulana Sahib, such incidents should be unconditionally condemned as Islam does not allow such fanaticism and illegal killings by mobs in any case," said Ahsan Iqbal. "The nation expects religious scholars to guide them in such matters."

Akin to that, Khokhar wrote that when it comes to condemning such incidents, there should be no ifs and buts.

"Maulana Fazlur Rehman Sahib is a respectable figure but, on this occasion, he should have condemned the Sialkot tragedy by taking a stand in blunt and clear words instead of using ifs and buts," he wrote.

The incident
Diyawadana Priyantha, working as a manager at a private factory in Sialkot, was lynched on Friday by a mob after being accused of blasphemy.

The gruesome incident was dubbed by Prime Minister Imran Khan as "a day of shame for Pakistan".

Workers of a garment industry, located on Sialkot’s Wazirabad Road, had alleged that the foreigner had committed blasphemy. He was subsequently lynched and his body set on fire.

The mob had also vandalised the factory and blocked traffic, according to police.

The brutal murder drew widespread condemnation from senior government functionaries, including the prime minister and president, as well as the military's top leadership, who promised to bring all those involved to the book.

I had the misfortune of listening to Fazl's speech last night and the way he spoke about Qadianis etc sent shivers down my spine.

How can any rightminded individual ever support his platform?

Why would PMLN/PPP allow him to be part of their movement?

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who is also the head of the Pakistan Democratic Movement, on Saturday said that PTI Chairman Imran Khan was not removed from power through any foreign conspiracy as he claims, but it was him who was responsible for Khan's ouster.

Addressing a seminar in Islamabad, Fazl censured the former premier and said that first, he kept waving an alleged threat letter before the masses and then resorted to saying that his life was in danger.

Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) president Maulana Fazlur Rehman has strongly criticised former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan for ‘violating’ the Constitution of Pakistan, ARY News reported on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference in Banu, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief said that the former premier wished to divide the country into three parts. “Ending the Imran Khan-led government was crucial for the country’s survival,” he added.

He further said that President Arif Alvi and PTI Chairman have violated the constitution and should be punished. Maulana Fazl also urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to direct Rana Sanaullah to take action against the ex-premier.

Jamiat Ulema-e- Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, a key leader of the coalition government, cancelled a planned trip to India this week after tensions flared following Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s remarks, calling Indian Prime Minister “butcher of Gujarat.”

Though there was no official confirmation that the chief of his own faction of the JUI-F and a coalition partner of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government, was to travel to India on a four-day visit.

Fazl was to attend a religious congregation in Uttar Pradesh, according to reports. However, the visit, was called off following Bilawal’s remarks that not only ignited fresh diplomatic row but also triggered protests in India against the Pakistani foreign minister.

The JUI-F chief’s visit would have been the first by a prominent Pakistani politician in over four-years. Last time a caretaker federal minister visited New Delhi in 2018 to offer condolences on behalf of Pakistan on the demise of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Fazl also visited India in the past but his latest trip would have been significant given the state of current relationship between the two neighbours, particularly in the wake of the renewed tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi in recent weeks.

Key cabinet ministers in recent days held back-to-back press conferences, accusing the Indian secret agency for sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan.

Islamabad also dispatched yet another dossier to the UN Security Council, containing “irrefutable evidence of India’s involvement in terrorism” in Pakistan.

Also earlier this week, the foreign ministers of India and Pakistan engaged in a war of words that further deepened tensions. Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, while responding to Pakistan’s dossier, said Pakistan had harboured Osama bin Laden.

Reacting to the statement, Foreign Minister Bilawal termed Modi as ‘butcher of Gujarat.’ His remarks led to the members of India’s ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), staging protests outside the Pakistani mission in New Delhi. Some extremist elements in India also offered head money on Bilawal.

Against this backdrop, sources said that the JUI-F chief cancelled his planned visit to India.

At a weekly news briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch stressed the need for the resolution of all outstanding issues between Pakistan and India through dialogue. “However, in order to pave the way for a meaningful and result-oriented dialogue, India must take steps to create a positive environment in the region,” the spokesperson added.

“It should end the systemic violations of human rights that are taking place in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and it must end support to terrorist groups that threaten Pakistan. In this context, you are aware that Pakistan has already shared a dossier and we have called for accountability of perpetrators of Indian-sponsored terrorist attacks on Pakistan,” she maintained.

PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly, dominated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), recently passed legislation to save former premier Imran Khan from a scandal involving the use of public funds to hire expensive helicopters for government functionaries.

He said this on Sunday while addressing the All Party Conference (APC) in Peshawar, organised against the PTI-led K-P government and to discuss the prevailing law and order and economic situation of the country

The legislation was passed by the provincial assembly last month, allowing the chief minister to hire an aircraft or helicopter at public expense from the open market or from the Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force, or the federal government for official use.

The opposition had protested against the legislation, claiming the bill would allow everyone to use aircraft or helicopters at public expense like 'rickshaws'.

Addressing the APC today, Fazl also blamed the provincial government for the deteriorating security situation in the province, warning it to “take immediate steps otherwise the opposition parties would take a tough decision”.

The heads of all parties in the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) will meet today (Friday) to chalk out a course of action in the wake of the Supreme Court’s order to release PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

The meeting has been called by Jamiat-i-Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) emir Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who also heads the PDM coalition.

In a late-night news conference after a meeting of JUI-F’s top leaders on Thursday, Maulana Fazl assailed the Supreme Court order, claiming that the PTI chief had been constantly provided relief by the judiciary.

He criticised the Supreme Court and said that soon after riots and unrest were started by PTI workers, it was clear to the government that it was only a matter of two days before the courts intervene.

PdM March another epitome of hypocrisy buy the big question whether the idaray will facilitate this march or turn a blind eye towards it

ISLAMABAD: A delegation of the federal government, including Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, apparently failed on Sunday to convince Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of the ruling Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), to change the venue of a sit-in scheduled to take place outside the Supreme Court on Monday (today).

The protest was called by the PDM after PTI chairman Imran Khan got blanket relief from courts in cases lodged against him, including the Al Qadir Trust case in which he was detained by Rangers on the premises of the Islamabad High Court.

Although the PDM chief announced on Friday that the alliance would stage a sit-in outside the SC’s building, PML-N leaders requested him to change the venue of the sit-in on account of security concerns.

The sit-in is likely to take place at Constitution Avenue in Islamabad, outside the Supreme Court building at a time when the top court is expected to resume hearing an Election Commission of Pakistan’s petition requesting the court to revisit its April 4 ruling that ordered polls in Punjab on May 14.

Last-ditch effort

A last-ditch effort to convince the PDM chief apparently failed as well. In a media talk alongside Mr Dar and JUI-F leader Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri after a meeting with Maulana Fazl, Mr Sanaullah gave an ambiguous statement regarding the outcome of the sitting with the JUI-F chief.

He said a final decision regarding the venue would be taken on Monday morning, but added, in the same breath, that the decision regarding the site of the protest, outside the Supreme Court, was taken by all parties of the PDM.

The interior minister said he had presented all security concerns before the PDM chief and it was decided that foolproof security arrangements would be made wherever the sit-in was staged.

“I have already directed the police and the local administration to make all necessary arrangements,” he added. Maulana Fazl was not present at the presser, indicating that he probably did not agree with any proposal regarding a change of venue of the protest.

Mr Dar said the interior minister was satisfied that participants of the sit-in would remain peaceful and no disturbance would occur during the demonstration. “Radius (of sensitive Red Zone) is well before you and the main apprehension — about loss of property and access during the protest — will be addressed,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the interior minister told a press conference that the government had requested the Maulana to change the venue of the sit-in to somewhere outside the Red Zone.

Maulana Fazl had assured them that he would be back after consulting his party leaders, Mr Sanaullah added. He said due to the huge number of expected protesters, the PDM chief was requested to hold the protest outside of the Red Zone.

The chief of the Pakistan Democratic Movement coalition, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has said that “sacrificing some judges” is necessary for the dignity of the judiciary and that it would make no difference.

"No decision of the country will be made in the building in front of us. We want to restore the dignity of Pakistan's judiciary," the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader said while addressing protesters at a sit-in in Islamabad on Monday.

Speaking to a massive crowd gathered to protest against the conduct of judges of the superior judiciary, especially Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umra Ata Bandial, the JUI-F chief said that the country’s decisions will now be made by the people, adding that "biased" judges have hurt their own reputation.

"People sitting on esteemed chairs cannot be allowed to disrespect Parliament and the people. If politicians are insulted, then our hammer is heavier than yours," he said.

"We reject your bullying. It is totally unacceptable to us," he added.
