A day after the acceptance of the resignation of Imran Ismail, jailed Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani assumed the office of the acting governor.

A spokesman for the Sindh Governor House said that Mr Durrani took charge of the office on Tuesday. “He held meetings with staff and other officials as well as people from different segments of the society on the first day in office,” he said.

Before assuming the charge, Speaker Durrani was under house arrest in connection with a corruption reference as his residence was declared as a sub-jail.

Also on Tuesday, an accountability court was informed that held Speaker Durrani enjoyed immunity from court appearances following his appointment as the acting governor of Sindh.

Accountability Court-IV Judge Suresh Kumar took up a case pertaining to accumulating assets worth Rs1.61 billion against the assembly speaker, his family members and others.

“However, the prison authorities failed to produce Agha Siraj Durrani in court,” his counsel, Amir Raza Naqvi told Dawn.

He added that an official notification of his appointment as acting governor of Sindh was also submitted in court, which was verbally informed that by default Mr Durrani enjoyed impunity from court appearances following his appointment as acting governor.

However, NAB’s special public prosecutor Dr Raja Muhammad Ali told Dawn that no formal application about appointment of Mr Durrani as acting Sindh governor was filed before the court.

The judge put off the hearing till May 10.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had arrested Mr Durrani on the premises of the Supreme Court in December 2021 after he surrendered on the apex court’s orders.

Earlier, he was first arrested by NAB in an Islamabad hotel on Feb 20, 2019 for investigation into his alleged movable and immovable assets beyond his known sources of income, making 352 illegal appointments, embezzlement of public funds in the construction of the MPA Hostel and the new Sindh Assembly building as well as the appointment of project directors for these schemes.

NAB had named Mr Durrani, his spouse, children, brother and others for possessing assets worth around Rs1.61bn made through illegal means.

Think after a PM who was allowed to skip his court case to take oath, this is the other shameful bit.

Not sure if we have fallen this badly before.

KARACHI: It was an early in the month of April 2020 when I received a call from an unidentified number and when attended it, the caller introduced himself as Dr Faisal Sultan, Prime Minister’s focal person on Covid-19, who wanted me to go through a scientific article in the reputed British Medical Journal (BMJ) before discussing some health-related issues.

“Waqar, this is Dr. Faisal Sultan, PM’s the focal person on COVID-19. SAPM Dr. Zafar Mirza has shown me your news report on increasing number of people being brought dead to Karachi’s hospitals. I have sent you the link of an article in the BMJ, which has also appeared today and it has also described mysterious deaths of people with coronavirus infection, who had no symptoms of respiratory illness. I want you to first go through this article and then we can talk,” Dr. Faisal Sultan said and hung up. I opened the link of the BMJ’s article, which was about outcome of autopsies of a few dozen people who had died after getting infected with the coronavirus in Germany but they had no classical symptoms of the viral disease. Authors of the scientific article in the BMJ claimed that the deaths happened due to ‘deep vein thrombosis’ or blood clots in their legs, arguing that coronavirus was also responsible for clotting of blood in the vascular system. When I called him back, Dr. Faisal Sultan asked me if the hospitals in Karachi were conducting autopsies of people being brought dead. We also discussed how differently coronavirus was behaving in different people, its capability to kill people without involving their lungs, causing strokes and pulmonary embolism, etc.

This was my first interaction with one of the most learned and qualified infectious diseases experts in Pakistan, who later replaced Dr. Zafar Mirza, another highly qualified and trained public health expert, as Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health. I soon learnt that he is an Abdalian, an alumnus of Cadet College Hasanabdal, who did his MBBS from King Edward Medical College Lahore and later got trained in internal medicine at the University of Connecticut in 1992 and in infectious diseases from Washington University School of Medicine in 1995. He was serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, Lahore, when he was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Covid-19 in Pakistan and later as the SAPM in August 2020.

During his tenure as SAPM on Health, Dr. Faisal commanded Pakistan’s war against Covid-19 very effectively, provided technical assistance to the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC), managed to arrange Covid-19 vaccines through COVAX, China, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom, put in place an extremely vigilant and effective system where vaccines were administered in a disciplined manner initially to all the healthcare providers as well as elderly people and then to the remaining population of Pakistan.

I used to interact with Dr Faisal Sultan regularly during the pandemic, learnt a lot from him on infectious diseases, available and emerging treatments of viral and bacterial diseases, variants of Covid-19, concept of herd immunity, how vaccines work, use of messenger RNA technology, burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases in Pakistan and to the rest of the world, difficulties being faced in treatment of cancers in Pakistan and many other issues in the healthcare sector. The most admiring thing about Dr Faisal Sultan was that despite being part of the ‘most controversial government in the history of Pakistan’, he remained apolitical throughout his tenure as SAPM, never indulged in dirty politics, and perhaps that was the reason he was never targeted by any opposition party. As an expert on healthcare issues, Dr Faisal Sultan was treated as a respect official by the provincial governments and their health ministers in the country.

‘Healthcare in Purana Pakistan’

As soon as the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) led government announced the name of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MNA Abdul Qadir Patel as the Federal Health Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHS,R&C), the people on the social media started comparing him with highly trained and qualified Dr. Faisal Sultan.

“The only relation of Abdul Qadir Patel with healthcare is that he is a co-accused in case with Dr. Asim Hussain for harboring and getting terrorists, mostly Lyari gangsters treated at Ziauddin Hospital”, says senior judicial reporter, Jamal Khurshid.

As the newly sworn-in federal health minister has no training and experience of working in the healthcare sector, many people in the country’s healthcare sector are extremely concerned about his appointment as health minister but maybe he has some hidden talent through which he could prove his critics wrong. “Let’s see how he deals with the National Health Services. It is now a policymaking ministry with limited resources so it is not very attractive position for politicians. Most probably he would quit soon”, an official in the federal bureaucracy told said.

Actor Maya Ali isn’t happy with the current government, and she isn’t afraid to air out her grievances online. With power outages hitting the country hard during an already unusually hot April, Maya took to her Instagram stories to call out the government, asserting how the return to the “old Pakistan” is evident.

The actor shared a video clip of a candle flickering in the darkness with the caption, “When there is not enough electricity to the charge the UPS.”

Thursday night marked Laylatul Qadr, the holiest night in the Islamic calendar. Lamenting the lack of electricity on a night worshippers spend in prayer, Maya shared, “Welcome to the old Pakistan where there is no light, load shedding is at its peak, life has become miserable once again.”

The Mann Mayal actor continued, “Out of 24 hours we are getting only 10 hours of electricity to work. And especially tonight, on such an auspicious night when everyone will be praying, there is so much load shedding.” She added sarcastically, “Well done.”

With forecasters warning of record temperatures in a heatwave expected to last till May 2, the country’s already strained power system seems ill-prepared to keep the nation’s lights on – a kitchen table issue PM Shahbaz Sharif seeks to solve immediately.

Several celebrities have previously expressed disappointment over the removal of Imran Khan from the post of PM following a no-confidence motion. Actor Armeena Khan tweeted a prayer following the vote, "May God protect Pakistan and its loyal citizens from darkness and the forces of evil that are about to consume it once more. Ameen."

Veteran actor Samina Peerzada shared, "This is not the end, Imran Khan will return with more power and greater resolve. He will not give up and neither will we. We share a great bond. Love for Pakistan."

Maya too took to Twitter to comment on the ouster, terming it the "saddest and a dark day in Pakistan’s history." She lamented, "All we needed was some patience, unity and belief. We have lost a gem, a true politician and honest prime minister. I salute Imran khan that he tried his best and fought for the sovereignty of Pakistan till the last moment. Thank you, kaptan. I know you will come back stronger. Once a leader, always a leader."

It seems like a lot of doom and gloom in Pakistani politics at the moment.

No hope at all, no positivity?

There are happy people and they usually are the ones who will benefit directly from the culture of looting and corruption the new regime will bring back. These people are jumping for joy on this forum and in real life.

Your average Pakistani with no political affiliation knows this regime is made up of crooks.

and of course load shedding was far less even in rural areas of KP like mine .

I think there was more peace, more merit in government jobs,
More jobs opportunities for us(doctors), emphasis on education through different programs like second shift in backward areas like us , police getting better in kpk, sehat cards, and many more.Proce hike was the main issue though.

HUSSAIN NAWAZ’S PRESENCE IN PAKISTAN’S OFFICIAL DELEGATION TO KSA SPARKS ANGER

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: Social media users in Pakistan have raised questions after spotting PM Shehbaz Sharif’s son Sulaiman Shehbaz and former PM Nawaz Sharif’s son Hussain Nawaz in Pakistan’s official delegation to Saudi Arabia, ARY News reported.

A number of social media users pointed out that while defending corruption cases and rejecting summons, Hussain Nawaz and his brother Hassan Nawaz had said that Pakistani laws don’t apply to them as they are British national and Sulaiman Shehbaz is also avoiding Pakistani courts, so in what capacity have they become part of Pakistan’s official delegation?

Both Hussain Nawaz and Sulaiman Shehbaz were seen in Pakistani delegation’s meetings with Saudi royals.

‘NAB laws don’t apply to us’

Various cases against the Sharif family pertain to Hill Metal Establishment, Al-Azizia Steel Mills, Avenfield property, and the Flagship Investment Ltd. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his sons, Hassan and Hussain, have been accused in all the references.

However, Hassan Nawaz, in 2017, claimed that warrants or proceedings by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) don’t apply to him and his brother Hussain Nawaz as both of them hold British nationalities.

Similarly, in 2018, Hussain Nawaz said that the NAB’s step for their arrest has no legal standing. He said that the anti-graft watchdog should do whatever it wants through Interpol as the Bureau’s actions have no legal standing. The ex-PM’s son said that no illegal actions are possible in Britain.

The culture of looting and corruption was rampant under PTI as well. In fact, there was more corruption in PTI government than it was in the PMLN government 2013-17.

Your average Pakistani with no political affiliation is too busy with his/her own life and problems to care about who is in power. Their lives are not going to change for better or worse.

Looks like visiting Pakistan in next couple of months isn't such a good idea.

No electricity is probably the worst night mare someone from the west could deal with.

They will create the problem of electricity shortages and give their friends billions to solve the problems they and their friends created in the 1st place with expensive contracts that were given sovereign guarantees to be paid off book.

Jinnah created Pakistan for these two families , Zirdari and Sharif, so if the two guys from the owners of Pakistan visited from London with the official delegate , I don;t see any thing wrong with that.

The state-run ******tan Television (PTV) has suspended 17 officials for failing to ensure ‘proper’ coverage of PM Shehbaz Sharif’s Lahore visit on the channel last week.

Strangely, the broadcast failure was due to the non-availability of an advanced laptop required to upload the video footage through file transfer protocol (FTP).

The suspended employees, on the other hand, claimed they had been scapegoated by the administration appointed by the previous regime in order to save the bigwigs.

PM Sharif had on April 24 visited Kot Lakhpat Jail and Ramazan Bazaars in Lahore, however, the PTV team, despite prior information failed to cover the events on the spot allegedly owing to non-availability of a properly functional laptop.

As per the standard operating procedures, a VVIP team comprising reporters and producers is responsible for the coverage of the prime minister. The team is equipped with the latest broadcast gadgets, including laptops for live streaming and timely uploading of the footage of any event. The core team is stationed in Islamabad and moves with the PM across the country and abroad.

As per documents available with Dawn, when the PTV Lahore centre was conveyed about the PM’s visit, they informed the PTV headquarters and its director news about the non-availability of an advanced laptop.

Earlier on April 18 also, PTV Lahore had written a letter to the headquarters informing it that they had hired a laptop from a private vendor for the PM’s visit to the city a day ago, as the office did not have one of its own.

The Lahore centre wrote in the letter: “Prime Minister of Pakistan was scheduled to visit Lahore… the Press Information Department demanded an editing team with a laptop along with the news team for timely editing and feeding to the concerned from the spot.”

The letter further stated: “Since we don’t have any laptop editing facility at the Lahore centre, we hired a laptop with the editing facility this time and deputed staff from the centre, but as a permanent arrangement we must own the same facility at the centre.”

Sources in PTV said the Lahore bureau was informed about the PM’s April 24 visit. It once again demanded a laptop, however, the in-charge of reporting as well as current affairs departments of the state-run TV in the capital did not pay any heed and suggested hiring one again.

Sources said the Lahore centre GM was compelled to get his personal laptop from home and hand it over to the VVIP coverage team. After coverage, when the team tried to transmit the footage to the office through FTP, it found the battery of the laptop had drained. Subsequently, instead of the visuals from the spot, PTV covered the event through an audio beeper of the reporter.

Traditionally, the PTV higher management suspended senior officials at the helm of affairs, but this time those removed from office included those from the second and third tiers.

According to the documents, the very next day after the PM’s visit, the PTV administration department on April 25 suspended the VVIP coverage deputy controller, Imran Bashir Khan, and handed over its additional charge to Haroon Elahi, the officiating controller news.

Moreover, Executive Programmes Manager Qaiser Sharif was assigned the additional charge of Lahore centre general manager instead of Saifuddin, and Current Affairs Producer Ishtiaq Ahmed was appointed as the head of current affairs by removing Sohail Ahmed. In addition, the administration suspended various engineers and cameramen over alleged neglect, the documents stated.

PTV spokesman Sohail Bokhari could not be reached for comment.
