The Board of Directors of Cricket West Indies (CWI) has approved in principle the tour of Bangladesh, subject to the finalization of the medical and logistical details within the tour Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The approval in principle was made following a recommendation from CWI’s Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), having received a detailed report from the pre-tour visit of Bangladesh by CWI Director and Member of the CWI and ICC MAC, Dr Mansingh and Security Manager, Paul Slowe.

CWI will continue discussions with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) to fine-tune the various arrangements in order to ensure the health and safety of the players and team management unit.

The revised draft tour schedule is:
January 10: West Indies arrive
January 18: One-Day warm-up match, BKSP, Savar
January 20: 1st ODI, SBNCS, Dhaka
January 22: 2nd ODI, SBNCS, Dhaka
January 25: 3rd ODI, ZACS, Chattogram
January 28-31: Four-Day warm-up, M.A. Aziz Stadium, Chattogram
February 3-7: 1st Test Match, ZACS, Chattogram
February 11-15: 2nd Test Match, SBNCS, Dhaka

ST JOHN'S, Antigua — The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today named the West Indies Test and One-Day International (ODI) squads for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh. West Indies are scheduled to play three ODIs and two Tests in Chattogram and Dhaka.

The West Indies touring party are due to arrive in Dhaka on January 10 and the series will run until February 15. West Indies are scheduled to play three ODIs and two Tests in Chattogram and Dhaka in a shortened tour.

The following players declined the opportunity to tour due to COVID-19 related concerns or personal fears: Jason Holder, Kieron Pollard, Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Sheldon Cottrell, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran. Fabian Allen and Shane Dowrich are unavailable due to personal reasons.

The CWI COVID-19 policy allows any player to opt out of selection for an overseas tour, only when based on the player’s own safety fears or concerns. Such decisions will not impact their consideration for future selection.

The Test squad will be led by the experienced Kraigg Brathwaite, with Jermaine Blackwood as vice-captain. Former Trinidad & Tobago and West Indies A team captain, Jason Mohammed, will lead the ODI team with Sunil Ambris as vice-captain.

Kavem Hodge, the right-handed top-order batsman, has earned a maiden call-up in the Test squad; while left-handed opener Shayne Moseley and all-rounder Kyle Mayers will be touring in the Test squad for the first time, after making trips to England and New Zealand as reserves this year. Mayers made his T20I debut against New Zealand last month. Two players have earned their first call-ups for the ODI squad — Akeal Hosein, a left-arm spinner allrounder; and Kjorn Ottley, a left-handed top-order batsman.

Roger Harper, CWI’s Lead Selector, said: “Kavem Hodge will be on his first tour with the team. He has been around for a few years and has made a case for himself and he now gets his chance. The fact that he also bowls left arm spin has certainly helped his cause. We also have Kyle Mayers and Shayne Moseley, who have both toured with the team to England and New Zealand as reserves, being selected in the Test Squad for the first time. Moseley coming off successful ‘A Team’ games in New Zealand and Mayers who has performed well in each of the CWI regional tournaments and also the CPL, over the last year."

Harper added: “The absence of several more experienced players has certainly provided an opportunity for the left-handed Kjorn Ottley who has had a good Super50 tournament last year. He will be very keen to make his mark. Tours of Bangladesh are never easy as they always play well in their own conditions. Although a number of the senior players are missing in both formats, I expect our teams to be very competitive. I expect our players to play with purpose, with passion and with the desire to prove that they belong at this level.”

Mashrafe Mortaza has been omitted from Bangladesh's preliminary squad for the upcoming home series against West Indies.

Mortaza, who is Bangladesh's most capped ODI player, has led the side in 88 ODIs and 28 T20Is. He had stepped down from ODI captaincy during the home series against Zimbabwe in March 2020.

BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin said on Monday, 4 January, that Mortaza "wants to continue playing domestic cricket".

"We have full respect for him (Mortaza) as he had given lot for us. It was a difficult decision but we have to accept reality,'' he said.

''We have taken this decision talking with the team management and everyone concerned. It's a big opportunity for the player who will replace him in the team. I have spoken with him (Mortaza) and there is no sort of misunderstanding between us. He said he wants to continue playing domestic cricket," Abedin added.

"We are beginning this series without Mortaza but we are keeping an eye on the 2023 World Cup. Our team management had given us a plan where the vision is 2023 World Cup and keeping that in mind we decided not to include him."

A notable inclusion in the side is Shakib Al Hasan, who is back in the mix after serving his one-year suspension. He has been named in both the preliminary squads for Tests and ODIs.

Preliminary Squad for ODI Series: Tamim Iqbal Khan, Taskin Ahmed, Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Al Amin Hossain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Md. Shoriful Islam, Mushfiqur Rahim, Hasan Mahmud, Md Mithun, Saif Uddin, Liton Kumer Das, Mustafizur Rahman, Md Mahmud Ullah, Mehidy Hassan Miraz, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Taijul Islam, Musaddek Hossain Saikat, Nasum Ahmed, Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Parvez Hossain Emon, Yasir Ali Chowdhury, Mahadi Hasan, Naim Sheikh, Rubel Hossain.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua — The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel has named Keon Harding as the replacement for Romario Shepherd in the One-Day International (ODI) squad that will play three ODIs later this month.

All-rounder Shepherd returned a positive COVID-19 test in his Guyana hometown and will therefore be unavailable for the Bangladesh tour. In accordance with the established Government stipulations, Shepherd will remain in Guyana where he is undergoing a period of isolation that unfortunately will extend beyond the team's travel period. Some members of the touring party departed today while others will leave tomorrow.

Following established medical protocols, CWI started the first of a series of COVID-19 tests, on all members of the Bangladesh touring party on January 2 and following receipt of the results today, CWI can confirm that all other members of the touring party have returned negative results. All members of the touring party took their second and final pre-travel COVID-19 test yesterday.

Harding, an exciting young 24-year-old fast bowler, was among the traveling reserves for the Sandals West Indies Test tour of England last summer.

Following PCR tests administered on Wednesday, January 13, Cricket West Indies (CWI) can confirm that Hayden Walsh Jr has tested positive for COVID-19 and will now undergo a period of self-isolation.

The Leeward Islands and West Indies leg-spinner, who is asymptomatic, first returned a negative test result on arrival into Bangladesh on the weekend, and then had a positive return on his test in Dhaka yesterday. This result was verified by a second positive test today.

The West Indies touring squad has been in individual isolation since arriving in Bangladesh and so there has been no contact between squad members since arrival. In accordance with the established medical protocols, Walsh remained isolated from the West Indies squad and is now under the care and supervision of the Team Physician, Dr Praimanand Singh.

Walsh will remain in isolation until he returns two negative PCR test results and therefore is unavailable to play in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh.

All other members of the West Indies touring squad returned second negative COVID-19 tests, after undergoing four tests within the last 11 days.

The three-match ODI Series starts on Wednesday, January 20.

Bangladesh have called-up three uncapped players for their upcoming men’s ODI home series against West Indies.

Mahadi Hasan, the off-spinner, was included in the side, along with the pacers Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud.

Mahmud, in particular, impressed during the inter-squad match between Mahmudullah XI and Tamim Iqbal XI, as per an ESPNcricinfo report. He claimed a four-wicket haul as the Mahmudullah-led side secured a five-wicket victory. Shoriful also impressed in that practice match, taking two wickets.

The team will be captained by Tamim Iqbal, and includes Shakib Al Hasan, who is set to feature in his first match for Bangladesh since September 2019, when he played against Afghanistan in a T20I.

Bangladesh and West Indies will feature in a three-match ODI series, starting on 20 January. The first two ODIs will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, before the series moves to Chattogram for the final ODI on 25 January. The ODIs form a part of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League fixtures.

The teams will stay in Chattogram for the first of the two-match Test series thereafter, starting on 3 February, before returning to Mirpur for the final Test, which will begin on 11 February.

Bangladesh ODI squad: Tamim Iqbal (c), Shakib Al Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Liton Das, Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Taskin Ahmed, Rubel Hossain, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mahadi Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam

Probably the only series in WTC where Bangladesh have a good chance of winning.

This series also may determine who finishes last at WTC table.

West Indies are missing some key players.

18-19 players squad for three ODIs at home is too few, should have picked 25 at least - we could have played couple of inter squad games.

Jason Mohammad last played for West Indies more than two years ago, but with coronavirus fears causing several players to stay at home, he will lead the Caribbean side again in a key series against Bangladesh starting Wednesday.

Regular captain Jason Holder and other stars such as Kieron Pollard and Darren Bravo all refused to travel, so Mohammad got another call-up.

The 34-year-old also led West Indies Twenty20 side on a tour of Pakistan in 2018 when the stars refused to go, that time over security fears.

West Indies will play three one-day internationals and two Tests in Bangladesh, starting with the first 50-over game in Mirpur on Wednesday.

"It is a good opportunity for me to have a good series, and put my hands up for when the full strength team is back, so I can really get my place back in that team," said Mohammad.

"Sometimes things come in different ways. I just have to grab this opportunity and make the best use of it, and lead the team to the best of my ability," he added.

With Holder, Pollard, Bravo, Sheldon Cottrell, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran all backing out and all-rounder Romario Shepherd and spinner Hayden Walsh having contracted coronavirus, Mohammad is leading a patched-up side.

West Indies coach Phil Simmons has backed the Trinidad batsman. who will lead the visitors in at least the ODI series.

"I think he has a good cricket brain. He has captained quite a few West Indies' age-group teams and also captained Trinidad," said Simmons.

Pedigree and ability

"He has that pedigree and ability. I am just expecting him to lead from the front."

The stakes are high for both sides as the one-day series will mark the start of the qualifying for the 2023 World Cup.

West Indies may be weakened but Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo says they must still be taken seriously.

"We can't expect West Indies to roll over," the South African said.

"They might be an inexperienced international side but a lot of them have played Caribbean Premier League and domestic cricket. They have very good records. We cannot take them for granted.

"It is a big series for us. World Cup qualifying points are up for grabs. We want to make sure that we can start our campaign really well."

Simmons said the series is "mighty important" because of the start of the World Cup Super League. West Indies had to go through playoffs to reach the last World Cup.

"We don't want to get into the playoffs any more. We need to start well," Simmons insisted.

The other one day games are on January 22 and 25 in Dhaka and Chittagong. There will be two Test matches in February.

Bangladesh squad:

Tamim Iqbal (capt), Shakib Al Hasan, Najmul Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Liton Das, Mahmudullah Riyad, Afif Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Taskin Ahmed, Rubel Hossain, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hassan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mahedi Hasan, Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam.

West Indies squad:

Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the second Test after failing to recover from a thigh strain he sustained on the second day of the first match

Bangladesh really is probably the worst test team, if ICC has a plan for World Test Championship they definitely should exclude Bangladesh from it & make it 8 teams championship.

Overjoyed Simmons says series result 'unbelievable' achievement

DHAKA, Bangladesh (CMC) — An elated Head Coach Phil Simmons said Sunday the performance of the West Indies side in the two-Test series here had exceeded his expectations.

Stressing even though he was usually positive ahead of every series, Simmons said the fact an inexperienced side had trounced Bangladesh on home soil had been an achievement hard to anticipate.

“It's a joyous occasion. It's an occasion which we haven't been able to celebrate as a West Indies cricket team since 2012,” Simmons said in reference to the last time West Indies won two Tests away from home.

“It's just unbelievable. Words fail me right now but the joy that's inside me right now is unbelievable.”

He continued: “We're playing Bangladesh at home and to come and to win two Test matches back to back in Bangladesh to win the series in Bangladesh, it does [exceed my expectations].

“I always feel I can win every time I go out there but I must be honest with this one.”

West Indies arrived here with a weakened Test squad after six first choice players, including Test Captain Jason Holder and backed out over COVID-19 fears.

The Caribbean side suffered a chastening 3-0 drubbing in the preceding one-day series that featured 10 debutants but the Test side stunned the cricketing world when they trounced the hosts by three wickets in the first Test in Chattogram last week.

At the centre of the success was batsman, Kyle Mayers who hit an unbeaten double hundred and fellow debutant Nkrumah Bonner, who struck 86, as West Indies chased down 395 to win on the final day.

Bonner, adjudged Man-of-the-Series, shone again in the second Test here with 90 in the first innings and 38 in the second, with wicketkeeper batsman Joshua Da Silva, in only his second Test series, top-scoring with 92 also in the first innings.

With rookie spinners Rahkeem Cornwall and Jomel Warrican — with just 15 Tests between them — also making an impact in the series, Simmons said it was important to ensure the current group continued to develop together.

“I would like to see this group continue to learn. From the first practice we had to now, there has been so much learning,” Simmons explained.

“Bonner, Da Silva, Mayers, (Shayne) Moseley — there has been so much learning from the younger players batting-wise, especially because we all know our batting has struggled for a while.

“The bowlers keep keeping us in matches so it was great to see them (batsmen) get to this level and it's only for them to improve. They must continue to improve their Test match skills.”

The tour was the third undertaken by West Indies since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic following series in England and New Zealand last year, and Simmons said West Indies remained committed to international cricket especially in the trying global environment.

“All these tours we've done is about cricket. It's about the game we love but it's about our duty to cricket to keep cricket alive in the world,” he stressed.

“Other teams are doing it — South Africa are in Pakistan, England are in India — but all of us know we have to play the cricket in order for it to continue.”
