Never in my life have I seen this many Indians attending the Wimbledon.

The whole Indian team including those who aren’t even part of the cricket tour are attending it with their wives.

The social media influencers, models, Bollywood people are there.

Are they even big time Tennis fans?

Or is it just the latest cringe trend by rich Indians to show off on their social media?

I heard somewhere actual Wimbledon club members are trading their passes for huge profits to all these obsessed show off people.

The Wimbledon itself obviously benefits from all these social media influencers attending the event making it a trend and bring all the PR.

Some desis just want to feel validated by doing things white people do, even if it doesn’t make sense to them.

So rich Indians want to do things their rich white friends or acquaintances want to do.

They need to start being at the cause and not the effect.

Set trends seamlessly without thinking about them by engaging and enjoying parts of your own culture instead of doing the most to just follow others’ mindlessly.

This is the cringiest thing ever.

These rich Indians and influencers don’t give a damn tomIndian hockey, football and other sports and just tweet about it when something big happens.

But they have all the money to fly all the way to Wimbledon to show off.

These dumb Indian people can’t even name 5 current Tennis players I bet you.

When asked to talk about Wimbledon they still end their talk with Federer, Djokovic, Alcarez lol 🤣

This new generation of Indians seems more interested in showing off and seeking validation from friends and relatives. Many of them visit places just to take selfies and post on social media, more focused on appearances than actually enjoying the moment. The same mindset drives them to follow every trend. Whether it's Operation Sindoor or putting a candle in their WhatsApp status they just don't want to feel left out. :rabada2 :inti

I agree with you on this. A rare moment. But let’s call a spade a spade.

Lets not agree with Viru bhai so easily pls. It is not only Indian players, even Joe Root attended. He will also be playing the next test match. So not sure singling out Indians only. Wimbledon is a cultural thing here and many do attend the spectacle.

Additionally, wimbledon also send guest invites to numerous sports people around the world. So it is most likely that likes of Pant and Root were invited to attend the event.

Check this:

What I find funny is, when Indian cricketers attend Winbledon...people cry here saying Desis trying to become goras.

When Beckham attends WC Semi final in Mumbai, people cry saying desis want validation from goras.

Kare to kare kya...bole to bole kya?.

:dw

What are you even on about, who said anything about the second scenario?

Khayali pulao as usual 😂

I would accept a Wimbledon centre court ticket in a heartbeat if it was offered to me.

What's not to love about tennis ? It is a great spectator sport.

What's wrong bhai.if an American, Tim cook can attend ipl then we have every right to attend tennis.tennis is much simpler game ( albeit rules wise).

Some weirdly judgemental people on here. It's a crime to watch a tennis match apparently.

Tim Cook, David Beckham are still exceptions.

Hundreds of Indians are flocking to Wimbledon to show off these days. It’s becoming a trendy phenomena that’s why we are discussing.

I have been watching Tennis since 2000 and I have never seen that many Indians at Wimbledon in 23 years which I saw in the last 2 years to a point it’s becoming embarrassing.

Support Indian sports, Indian artists first before flocking to Wimbledon to tell the world they’re among the elite.

That’s a rare few people like Sachin, Virat, Rohit and few other prominent names who get invites.

99% of the rest pay a premium to visit Wimbledon.

There’s also a bigger discussions that show off minded rich Indians have ruined most live event by buying all the passes paying a hefty premium that most of the genuine fans of the artists or the sport are unable to afford them anymore.

Even in overseas cricket matches back in the day we used to see almost equal Indian and Pakistani fans presence in the stadiums and they were all genuine fans. Nowadays rich Indians buy 90% the tickets at a premium in the black market and the entire stadium is painted blue.

Even Wimbledon social media handlers cashing in. Bro what is this? lol

Some desis genuinely enjoy and some just have inferior complex and want to feel validated.

I always wondered why Indians suck up to the British considering what history tell us about them during the British Raj empire and also when India was the prime economic country before the empire how Brits took it away from them. Never understood that dynamic.

No surprise there because that’s exactly why a handful of British were able to loot India.

Through the help of these suck up Indians.

“Hey Rajesh, help us loot your country, don’t give a damn to these slaves, you’re not one of them, would you like to come to white people dinner party tonight.”

Rajesh: Of course Saar

Unfortunately Indians are getting richer.

Few more years and they’d do the same with Monaco F1

And a decade from now, you might see Indians flocking to the Super Bowl.

They would do anything to stay in limelight and show off.

Wimbledon is a premier sporting event, so anyone who can, does go there.

Wimbledon is a premier sporting event, so anyone who can, does go there.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with enjoying international sport. But when admiration for a tournament morphs into a superficial display of elitist fashion symbolism created by the very nation that once dismantled own own, it raises genuine questions about lack of pride.

This goes far beyond love for tennis. Majority of these people do not truly follow Tennis and for them Tennis starts and ends with 4-5 names and while the players at Wimbledon are the same as those at the Australian Open, French Open, or the US Open, those other Grand Slams never attract this kind of breathless Indian admiration. That alone makes it clear, the fascination is not about the sport, but about a desire to be seen part of the elite group.

In that context, @Theo_14’s point is spot on. For Americans or Europeans to indulge in this nostalgia-soaked British pomp is understandable, it is part of their civilizational continuity. But for Indians to show so much desperation to join in this Elitist behaviour is somewhat embarrassing. This is after all the nation that systematically looted India for two centuries and left it among the world’s poorest countries in 1947, a far cry from the globally significant civilization India once was in the 18th century.
By attending Wimbledon and flaunting it as a badge of sophistication Indians are just helping in preservation of British soft power at a time when Britain’s global relevance is waning. It speaks volumes about the lingering colonial hangover, the need to feel validated by the West, and a persistent inferiority complex that still grips many sections of Indian society.

@Bhaijaan isn't just talking about tennis. He is pointing out a broader trend among Indians in recent years which are the obsession with selfies, showing off on social media, and seeking validation from friends and relatives. He is questioning how genuine these so-called tennis fans really are. Are they truly interested in the sport, or are they just there to flaunt their Wimbledon tickets?

I am pretty sure 90% of them don't even know the basic rules of tennis. That said, I wouldn't count celebrities or athletes from other sports in this. They have earned their status and can attend any event they like. Even during his playing days, Sachin used to attend Wimbledon, and it always made the news. :inti

To be fair, there is nothing wrong with this if you feel it is advancing you as a society. When Indians had adopted a more gentle and holistic form of their religion it was accepting of every new idea and willing to adopt and adapt as it were.

But clearly there is some blowback at home so you have the rise of the hindutva movement and there is a counter movement to preserve Hindu culture...whatever that is. Attending Wimbledon in itself isn't an issue but it does show that Indians still need validation from western countries and have not achieved that status at home themselves.

The story of one of the worlds premier tennis players assuming Sachin was a teenage ballboy, is one of the best stories about Indians in Wimbledon. The player lovingly messed up Sachins hair and told him to work hard and he can be successful when he grows up.

It was very quickly hushed up and the tennis player ID not revealed in public as he was deeply embarassed, but those who know will remember it well.

Not sure how you come to the conclusion that Indians always suck upto british just because some choose to attend Wimbledon. I have lived here for more than a decade and never sucked up to anyone.

If you live in another country, you cannot take the pind with you from home. Respecting their culture or in small cases even adopting them is assimilation and not sucking up. What is the point of bringing British Raj and queens empire into it? What do you expect Indians to do? Take revenge of Jalianwala Bagh Massacre, is it? LMAO.

Lets be honest, like anything else....Brit Pakistanis are simply jealous of Brit Indians and their success. Hence they try to bring them down with silly logic like sucking upto British Raj etc. Some are also jealous that likes of Tendulkar and Kohli gets regular invitation from wimbledon but Pak cricketers does not.

#TrueStory

Most don’t care about the sport or even understand it . It’s not just Indians but celebs think if they are special or important if in the royal box

Upwards social mobility, good for them. Bit of a ring kissing gesture by desis lets be honest, only Kohli deserves to be there.

Very clever from ECB also to be hosting India during Wimbledon allowing Wimbledon to invite as many Indian cricketers to the event and get massive PR through them for a dying sport.

OP wasn't talking about British Indians though. He was talking about the whole Indian team and their entourage. Wimbledon is a landmark British tournament, I would imagine the Indian players are trying to get some significance by association.

The show off culture is off the roof now a days. Celebrities wants to be in media, thats understanable.

Not just this generation, even previous ones. Inferiority complex among folks to be validated by west.

Why are Indians so obsessed with wanting to be white/fair skinned and act like westerners?

The west is successful to be fair, I think the white skin preference is because that has imprinted superiority by association. Not sure it's just the skin colour either, westerners tend to carry themselves with a lot of pride, whereas desis have adopted a somewhat servile attitude, more noticeable in Indians than the others, although there is some shades of it in Pakistan and Bangladesh as well.

Or is it because some are ashamed of their ethnicity or identity? Ie so many Indians adopt western names, like Mike or Dave or Kim or Kat. Ive seen this with Sikhs and Hindus but very rarely Muslims from sub continent.

I have seen this not just in sub continent, even in south east asia and middle east. Trying to ape western tastes and dressing.

If you live in a multicultural town/city with various cultures mixing this is fine, in fact I think this should be encouraged. But when you are from another country, wanting to be like others is insecurity or more?

Why do you think the hindutva movement has become so popular? It's a reaction at home to stop their culture being phased out. Without it, the natural instinct is for Indians to want to ape the west. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it either, maybe the Indian culture does need phasing out. Never seen that much impressive in it anyway to be honest, but then I am not from there.

This is where the insecurity stems from. I think it’s best Indians adopt the secular route, many have become successful abroad and infused into communities successfully. There is nothing redeeming about Indian religion or culture in general.

It is definitely aping WEST syndrome, you will observe when people visit their ancestral homes in Ind/ Pak/ Bdesh from vilaayat, the way they talk/ dress and behave is ridiculous, I am not saying everyone is the same but a lot feel good when they try to sideline with west and look down on their own roots/ people.

With India having over a billion folks and middle/ upper middle class getting more money, you would see now many Indians are attending F1 races/ grand slams/ visiting Europe in summer for vacation. Main intention is to take pics for Instagram and feel good about themselves.

At least women from sub continent still wear sarees/ punjabi chudidars and gold jewellery , where as in Malaysia/ Hong kong/ Nigeria/ Caribbean islands/ south africa (common wealth non white nations) their entire dressing is changed

It’s a sport ,cricketers are obviously going to want to watch it, older celebs watch it because historically it had a lot of prestige.
For example I want to watch a test in Sydney, because I grew up loving MCG and SCG, my uncles etc prefer Lords.

The only cringe ones are those who go to Cannes and then here- Influencers.

If you think South Asians mimic West, remember China made cities to look exactly like Europe..China , Thailand, S Korea ape the west like no one.
I don’t even see East politicians wear their ethnic clothes.

It’s sports lot of us grew up watching, many Indians want to watch Barca, ManU play as well, and now people are able to afford it so they are going for it, nothing cringe there imo

I have gone to a few Basketball, Ice Hockey games to watch Dallas play but heck i would pay a lot to watch an Old Jordan/Kobe play.

East Asian nations copy the infrastructure of western cities and for good reason. In this day and age of automobiles you need roads and power stations which can fuel a modern city. I don't think it is those things which are cringe, every country should look for progress, whatever direction it comes from.

I think Indians come across as cringe because they try to hard to kiss up, even appealing to Brits that they are model citizens and comparing thier willingness to integrate favourably against Muslims. We used to see Indian posters trying to score points on this topic a while back until it was pointed out to them that it made them look desperate for acceptance.

I don’t think that’s true, China has copied the entire city to make it look European not because they are more efficient.(Shanghai is more efficient than Paris).

On Indians , that’s again not true, majority Indians still follow their culture abroad, that’s the very thing that has been annoying to West in last 4 years.
Nothing wrong in following their own culture but not on streets on downtown creating a ruckus.

You can’t use 1-2 examples of Indians mimicking West, that happens in every culture, there is a middle ground and many Indians follow it.

In what ways has Indians following their culture abroad been annoying to the west? The mainstream media actually praise Indians for integrating as compared to Muslims. Although of course Indians are still not wanted as neighbours because they represent the third world, and that automatically associates them with dirt and smells so even if this is unspoken, it is there in the background.

There are two big things that immigrants in the West should actively strive and put an effort into - the dress code and the language.

These two facets make immigrants stand out from the native population (from a superficial standpoint) and you don't want that.

The problem is nobody knows them in the UK, apart from hardcore cricket fans. The Asian so called stars are mostly stars in Asia, not in Europe.

Believe it or not the most famous person from sub continent(not sports fans) is the legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Famous to whom ? BritPaks ? Even the younger generations of britpaks are clueless about Nusrat.

The same British who once hung signs outside restaurants declaring “Dogs and Indians not allowed,” who refused to let Indians into their clubs and gatherings unless they abandoned their traditional attire for Western suits now go to events like Wimbledon, where Indian celebrities have to obediently conform to the formal British dress code.

It’s disheartening to see prominent Indians, who should represent our proud and independent nation, still behaving as though they are mentally bound to their former colonial rulers.

Where is the pride? Where is the self-respect? Where is the nationalism that prompts one to wear their own culture with honour? Is there a single Indian celebrity today with the courage to attend Wimbledon dressed in traditional Indian clothing, a kurta, a saree, or a sherwani and represent India authentically?

We often take offence when others, including Pakistanis, accuse us of pandering to Western standards. Yet Pakistanis regularly wear their traditional shalwar kameez on global platforms, regardless of whether it fits the setting or not and that, at least, is an expression of cultural pride. It’s time we asked ourselves: are we truly free if we still feel the need to dress for approval?

That was before Cap, look at those other threads by @Slim where Canadians seem to “hate” Indians because of their overshow of Indian culture

I was talking about immigrants specifically.

I have no problem with indian celebrities or invited guests or tourists wearing sarees or kurtas .. tis a good thing to showcase authenticity. (y)

However, with Wimbledon I'm pretty sure the invitations from the club come with a requested dress code. Which is why everyboy wears a suit.

That’s ok if no one knows, and no NFAK is not the most famous person from SC, doubt he is more famous than IK from itself let alone India. Yes he is a legend definitely.

Shahrukh Khan, Diljit Dosanjh currently are most famous people currently with former going down and late going up.

I don’t see the reason as to why Indian should adhere to Western dressing code? It’s one thing to be clean and healthy but dress code does what?

The only thing that stands out is Bhangra on downtown streets but drunk Panjabis.

Pakistani top politicians don’t even wear their ethnic dress in their Parliament let alone ln global forums.

I'm not a big fan of wearing traditional eastern clothing in the west to be honest. It's not really suitable for a start, it is designed for hot climates. But accessories like bangles, amulets and the dot on the forehead can be quite a good way to show your culture if you want to stand out. I don't see why you shouldn't stand out for what it's worth, as long as it's not for the wrong reasons like body odour or paan stained teeth.

Whats wrong with this ? You can go there and watch the Wimbledon or any other sports if you can afford it. I see Many posters crying about it lol :kp

If there’s one thing we Indians excel at, apart from spicy food, wild cricket theories, and chaotic weddings, it’s our uncanny ability to become immediately defensive about anything remotely critical of our national behavior.

Bring up anything slightly uncomfortable say colonial hangovers, or why half of Bollywood is dressed like they’re attending tea with Queen Victoria’s ghost and suddenly we’re in national outrage mode. How dare you question our international image, our traditions, or our emotionally complex relationship with Wimbledon?

Say what you want about Pakistanis and trust me, there’s no shortage of material but at least they’ve mastered the fine art of owning their chaos. Bad debt? “ No shame bro Maangne se sab mil jaata” Child grooming scandals? “It’s just a Bradford thing yar” Air defense? “Oh ki hunda paaji? Homosexuality? “Rampant, welcome to Faisalabad bro.” Always forthcoming and owning things bravely.

But Indians? God forbid someone points out that we might be mentally colonized, or still dressing up to please people who once banned us from their restaurants, we break out the nationalistic violin and start shouting about our GDP, ISRO, BCCI etc.

If it were still 1947, we’d probably be denying we even had iodine deficiency. It’s time we really faced the mirror, and asked why we still feel the need to suck up and dress like British to feel accepted.

I dont think any Pakistani politican can top this dress on a public forum.
his blue pinstripe suit at a meeting with US President Barack Obama was embroidered with his own name – over and over again.

I would go and watch a Wimbledon match live in the stadium if I had the opportunity. Tennis is a great sport to watch in person.

They’re celebrities, it’s part of their job to be seen, especially at high profile events that attract stars from every field. The visibility boosts social media engagement, which often turns into more revenue.

They’ve already succeeded the moment you start sharing their posts, mission accomplished.

GUYS, PLEASE STAY ON TOPIC..

READ THE TITLE OF THE THREAD AND THEN POST ACCORDINGLY.

Sachin might have kickstarted it when pics and videos of him with Federer went viral.

But wasn't aware of the scale now. I also find it embarrassing when Indians talk about the prestige of playing at Lord's. Bumrah kind of went against it yesterday when he pretty much refused to raise the ball after getting his 5fer. But he backtracked a bit during his presscon saying he was just tired lol

Seems Wimbledon organisers are sponsoring the celebrities left and right to make it a prestige issue.they are chasing the money. Agassi got irritated while commenting in semis match. He wished focus will be on tennis rather celebrities flirting other celebrities .(Di caprio was doing his passionate job)

IMO if they have to sit in royal box, then they have to follow dress code...even MCC pavilion at lords, they follow dress code

I would have no problem if we didn’t have a colonial history with UK.
