A report submitted to the Supreme Court on Thursday regarding television anchor Dr Shahid Masood's claims about 6-year-old Zainab's killer states that all 18 of the revelations made by Masood were false and baseless.

The anchorperson had claimed during a late night show that Zainab's rapist and murderer, Imran Ali, was a member of a pornography gang, which also includes a Punjab minister. During earlier hearings of the case, Masood had also told the court that the suspect has 37 foreign accounts.

A JIT, separately formed by the SC to investigate Masood's claims, said in the report submitted to court today that Masood was unable to support any of his claims with evidence.

The report said that Masood's allegations regarding the killer belonging to an international ring connected to child pornography are false and that there is no evidence regarding the existence of any international bank accounts in Ali's name.

"The convict is a poor man and there is no evidence of any international bank accounts in his name," the report said, also ruling out any influential politician backing Imran Ali.

The JIT report also said that Masood's claim that someone would try to prove Ali to be clinically insane during trial was also false.

"Shahid Masood has failed to substantiate his claims with proof," the JIT said.

While hearing the case earlier, the chief justice had warned Masood of dire consequences if his claims proved to be false.

"If your news turns out to be untrue, [then] you cannot even imagine what will happen," the chief justice had warned the TV anchor.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Wednesday refused to accept a verbal apology from News One Anchorperson Dr Shahid Masood for his startling allegations against the convicted rapist and murderer of six-year-old Zainab in Kasur.

The anchorperson had claimed during a late night show in January that convict Imran Ali was a member of a pornography gang which also includes a Punjab minister. During earlier hearings of the case, Masood had also told the court that the suspect has 37 foreign accounts.

The court today told Dr Masood that it was too late now to apologise after a joint investigation team (JIT) probing his allegations revealed last week that all 18 of the claims made by the anchorperson were false and baseless, and that there was no evidence for any of the allegations made by him.

"In your programme you said that you should be hanged if your allegations are proven incorrect," Justice Nisar reminded the anchorperson.

Dr Masood's counsel said that his client was prepared to do whatever the court asked of him. Following this, the anchorperson verbally apologised twice, but the court refused to accept his apologies.

"Some people had suggested you should apologise in [an earlier hearing in] Lahore," the CJP said. "The time for an apology has now passed," Justice Nisar said, adding that Dr Masood could continue contesting the case if he wished.

The CJP said that justice would be served in the case, and sought a reply from TV channel News One, adjourning the case until March 12.

Imran Ali, who was convicted in the rape and murder of Zainab Amin by an Anti-terrorism Court in February had appealed to the Lahore High Court against the verdict that handed him death penalty on four counts, pleading not guilty to the offences.

Earlier this week, Imran Ali was formally nominated in the rape and murder cases of seven other children in Kasur, after an earlier DNA test of the suspect revealed his DNA was a match with samples recovered from the crime scenes in the seven cases prior to Zainab's.

The investigation officer probing the cases had told the ATC that the suspect kidnapped, raped and killed a total of eight girls over the last year or so.

Anchorperson Dr Shahid Masood told the Supreme Court on Saturday that he does not wish to contest the findings of an inquiry committee which had termed his startling claims about the convicted rapist and murderer of six-year-old Zainab in Kasur to be false and baseless.

In a written statement submitted to the court today by his counsel, the News One anchor stopped short of formally apologising for his allegations, but attempted to assure the apex court that he will observe "due diligence" in the future before making similar claims.

"I further submit that whatever the inquiry committee has concluded I do not contest and refute the same," wrote Dr Masood, who had earlier offered to be hanged if his allegations are proven incorrect.

Implicitly casting doubt on the inquiry committee's findings, the anchorperson said that although the committee had included him and others in the investigation, he "could not comment on the veracity of its [the committee] findings" because the court had itself selected members of the probe team.

Thanking the SC for taking a "prompt action" against his programme that was broadcast on January 24, Dr Masood said that since Zainab's murder was a highly sensitive issue, "I not only being an anchor and journalist but also a father was highly concerned and emotionally upset."

Explaining how he reached his conclusions about the murder convict, the anchorperson said that the manner in which Zainab was raped and murdered and the torture marks that were observed on the child's body were "identical" to incidents of violent child pornography, which he claimed are broadcast on the 'dark web'.

Dr Masood said he had come across such recordings through his own sources in which children are sexually assaulted and murdered and "the same is viewed live by many people across the world and the same involves [a] hefty amount of money".

According to the anchorperson, he formed the opinion that convict Imran Ali was part of an international child pornography racket after he received information about certain bank accounts of the accused and his alleged connections with influential personalities.

"That with all this sensitivity and emotional distress I conducted the show on the fateful evening [of January 24", which culminated into the chief justice taking a notice of the programme, Dr Masood said.

"I... assure this august court that I shall observe due diligence and care before making any such statement [in the future]," he concluded.

The news anchor offered the court an unconditional apology "from the depths of his heart" for being unable to prove his startling allegations against the convicted rapist and murderer, Imran Ali, of six-year-old Zainab in Kasur. Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, however, dismissed the verbal apology, saying: "I will not forgive you without punishment".

"I have been hearing about the 'depths of your heart' for a while now," Justice Nisar remarked.

The CJP then told Masood to "suggest a punishment for himself or the court will ban him for six months". Masood first suggested a ban for one month and then extended it to two months.

The SC announced a ban for three months and ordered the anchorperson to submit a written apology. Justice Nisar warned him that the courts "were not the same as before".

At the beginning of today's hearing, Justice Nisar lambasted the anchorperson for "insulting [the CJP's] law officer" during his late night programme. "How dare he insult my law officer?" the CJP asked.

"I can get a screen installed to watch the remarks you gave in your characteristic loud voice," Justice Nisar said, adding that the court could charge Masood for contempt of court.

In an earlier hearing this month on March 7, the CJP had refused to accept a verbal apology from News One anchorperson for his startling allegations against the convicted rapist and murderer of six-year-old Zainab in Kasur.

Masood, on March 12, had submitted a written apology in court, saying that he was "sorry if the transmission hurt anyone's sentiments". The apology was again rejected by the CJP who said that the anchorperson "had not apologised" in his answer.

Non-bailable warrants issued for Dr Shahid Masood

A civil judge on Friday issued non-bailable arrest warrants for TV anchor Shahid Masood for his alleged involvement in the embezzlement of Rs38 million from Pakistan Television (PTV).

Masood is under investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the matter.

The anchorperson is accused of signing an agreement with a bogus company to obtain media rights for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The TV channel had to face a heavy loss due to the agreement, media reports said.

The reports added that the FIA sought warrants, saying that Masood had been asked several times to join the investigation. However, he deliberately avoided to join the investigation, claimed reports, citing a request signed by FIA Investigation Officer (IO) Kashir Riaz Awan.

The FIA was quoted as saying that it had sufficient incriminating evidence on record to make the arrest. Subsequently, senior civil judge Amir Aziz ordered that arrest warrants for Masood should be issued.

ISLAMABAD: A local court dismissed on Wednesday the plea for pre-arrest bail of Shahid Masood, but the TV anchorperson left the court before he could be arrested.

Special judge central Kamran Basharat Mufti read the decision of the Pakistan State Television’s corruption case. In the proceeding, the Federal Investigation Agency argued against Masood’s pre-arrest bail.

The anchor fled from the court before the decision was read and the FIA team present in the court could not arrest him after the decision was read.

Sources said that the FIA team is conducting raids to arrest the anchor.

Masood was appointed chairman PTV in Pakistan People’s Party government and there are allegations of corruption worth around rupees 33 million against him.

Masood is accused of being involved in the embezzlement of Rs37 million during his tenure as managing director of Pakistan Television (PTV).

During the hearing, PTV’s counsel Muhammad Nazeer Jawad apprised the court that Masood had signed a broadcasting rights agreement in exchange for cricket matches with fake a company.

At the time of the agreement, the counsel added, Masood paid the company a sum of over Rs30 million. The entity was registered in Lahore and provided catering services.

Jawad further informed the court regarding co-accused Kashif Rabbani’s involvement in the case. “No one besides Masood and Rabbani knew about the fake company,” the counsel maintained.

Furthermore, co-accused Rabbani reportedly returned a sum of Rs10.2 million against the dismissal of bail. Accused Roshan Mustafa Gilani also reportedly returned Rs8 million after his bail was rejected.

Both the accused remarked that Masood should pay the remaining amount.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had arrested Masood from the premises of the Islamabad High Court on November 23 after his bail plea had been rejected in the PTV corruption case. The next day, the court had remanded Masood in FIA's custody for five days.

The anchorperson was presented before the court of Duty Judge Inamullah today as his five-day judicial remand ended.

Shahid Masood granted bail in PTV corruption case

The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to anchorperson Shahid Masood against surety bonds worth Rs500,000 in a case pertaining to embezzlement of Rs38 million from state-run broadcaster Pakistan Television.

According to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Dr Masood during his tenure as managing director and chairman of PTV was involved in the embezzlement of Rs37 million in acquiring Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) media rights in 2008.

The agreement was allegedly carried out with a fake company — M/s International Sports Solution (ISS). Investigators claim that funds were also released, causing the loss of millions of dollars to PTV as the state-run television channel failed to acquire PCB media rights from 2008 to 2013.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Manzoor Ahmed accepted Masood's bail application today.

The anchorperson stated in his appeal that he is a "blunt" analyst and critic of government policies, due to which he has been "a target of governmental institutions".

The plea noted that although the FIA had shut the case, it was reopened in 2015. "Suspects Kashif Rabbani, Fawad Shabbir and Roshan Gilani are all facing trial and have also started paying back the embezzled amount," the bail plea added.

The anchor accused the FIA of harassing him and not being able to come up with any proof against him.

Masood added that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had rejected his request for bail without examining the facts of the case as his name "was not mentioned in the first investigation report".

On December 23 last year, Masood was arrested from the premises of the IHC by the FIA after the court dismissed his petition.
