Regarded as one of the most talented medium-fast bowlers in Pakistan cricket, Sadaf Hussain has played 73 first-class matches where he has taken 353 wickets since his debut in 2009. Despite taking five ten-wicket and 24 five-wicket hauls at the first-class level, his excellent performances in domestic cricket have gone unrewarded as he is yet to play a single game for Pakistan.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, Sadaf spoke about his disappointment at being ignored by the selectors for Pakistan despite consistently good performances at the domestic level, what drives him to continue playing despite so many set-backs, why he is yet to play a single Twenty20 game at the domestic level and what the future holds for him.

PakPassion.net: You've performed well season after season in domestic cricket, but why do you think you've not had a chance for Pakistan?

Sadaf Hussain:
This is the question that keeps going around in my head over and over again. I have no idea why I have never been given a chance to play for Pakistan. The selectors haven't answered this question, in fact nobody has.

PakPassion.net: But surely you must have some idea why the selectors won't give you a chance?

Sadaf Hussain:
If I knew the answer to this then I wouldn't be so puzzled. If there was a weakness in my bowling or they felt I wasn't good enough and they told me this, then at least I will know where I need to improve and which areas I need to work on. I've performed in One-Day cricket and 4-Day cricket in Pakistan, yet I am still ignored and face a wall of silence from the selectors.

PakPassion.net: Is there something going on behind the scenes which may explain why, despite your excellent record, the selectors continue to overlook you?

Sadaf Hussain:
I've not had any disciplinary problems, I've not had any issues with coaches or teammates and have never been involved in any controversy, so there is nothing in the background that would stop me from being selected as far as I am aware.

PakPassion.net: There were some rumours that a Pakistan Cricket Board official was personally responsible for ensuring that you never got a chance to play for Pakistan. Is this rumour accurate?

Sadaf Hussain:
I am aware of those rumours but I can categorically say that those rumours are false. The official that was referred to in the rumours has no issues with me and I have no issues with him. He has always supported me and I have no problems at all with him.

PakPassion.net: Wickets and solid performances, season after season, yet barely any recognition. What keeps you going?

Sadaf Hussain:
Cricket is my passion, it's my life. I'm the breadwinner for my family and cricket helps me earn a living. My focus is only on playing cricket, improving as a cricketer and being a good ambassador for Pakistan. Cricket has given me recognition, it has helped me put food on the table and I will always be sincere to this sport. Every year I say to myself at the start of the season that my aim is to improve and achieve better statistics and to hopefully get a call-up from the Pakistan selectors. If the selectors pick me, that's great, if not, then I will continue to give my all and serve the domestic teams that select me.

PakPassion.net: You nearly quit cricket a few years ago, why was that?

Sadaf Hussain:
That is correct. I was receiving setback after setback. I was ignored for domestic tournament after domestic tournament and sat watching on the sidelines whilst my teammates played in tournaments. I would perform and then get dropped. I was mentally all over the place and enough was enough. I had set my heart on a change of career, but then my family changed my mind and told me to stick at it and better days would come. My family persuaded me to continue playing cricket at a time when I wanted to just give up the game.

PakPassion.net: There was some interest in you from one of the Pakistan Super League franchises. What came of that?

Sadaf Hussain:
No, nothing happened. I waited for a call or some communication, but nothing materialised. I guess the problem is that I don't get selected for the other domestic Twenty20 tournaments so it would be difficult for a PSL franchise to pick me. The frustrating thing is that even Rawalpindi don't pick me for Twenty20 tournaments which is puzzling. If Rawalpindi or one of the other teams picked me for tournaments like the National T20 Cup then at least I can show what I am capable of and who knows perhaps that could lead to a PSL contract. If I flop in the domestic Twenty20 tournaments then I won't complain, but when you aren't even given a chance then that is just totally confusing and very frustrating.

PakPassion.net: You have never played a domestic Twenty20 match. That is bizarre. Are you incapable of bowling four overs accurately?

Sadaf Hussain:
Well that is unbelievable for me also. My record in One-Day cricket is good and let's be honest Twenty20 cricket is not that different from 50-over cricket and the basics for a bowler are the same. I've been playing first-class cricket for seven or eight seasons yet nobody has deemed me capable of playing even one single 20-over match, which is mystifying.

PakPassion.net: You were invited to a training camp at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. How did that go?

Sadaf Hussain:
It was a 2-day camp and it was mainly to assess the fitness of the participants and the second day was mainly skills work in the nets. The coaches that were overseeing the camp were local coaches who know of me and have seen me play many times already. I guess it would have been better if the likes of Mickey Arthur were there at that camp.

PakPassion.net: Have you ever seen any of the national selectors at any of the matches you are playing in?

Sadaf Hussain:
I have seen the selectors at some of the matches but they tend to concentrate more on televised matches which I am never involved in. I suppose it's difficult for the selectors to be everywhere particularly when there are 8 or 9 matches going on and there are only 3 or 4 selectors. Also they tend to attend matches at the main venues rather than the smaller venues when domestic matches are taking place.

PakPassion.net: Some players receive a lot of support from the media, why is it that you are largely ignored by sections of the media?

Sadaf Hussain:
I urge the media to support all players and to also support my cause. I urge the media to ask the selectors why I am continually being ignored when the likes of Zia-ul-Haq, Mir Hamza, Ehsan Adil, Mohammad Abbas and Usman Shinwari as well as others have all been given a chance. Why have I not been given a chance? What have I done wrong? Why is there no justice for me?

PakPassion.net: Critics point to the fact that the pitches you play on are bowler-friendly. What is your response to that criticism?

Sadaf Hussain:
This season you can say that the combination of the Dukes ball and the pitches have helped the bowlers. If you look at the batting statistics in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy they show that bowlers have definitely been on top. However I don't prepare the pitches or organise the schedule and I have taken wickets wherever I have played and in every season. Wherever I am asked to bowl, I have managed to consistently take wickets so it's not a case of me having taken wickets only on green tops.

PakPassion.net: Selectors want consistency, yet despite that from you, a call-up for Pakistan or a comeback for Pakistan A still seems a long way off doesn't it?

Sadaf Hussain:
What surprises me the most is that apart from one ODI series where I represented Pakistan A versus Afghanistan in 2011 and was the highest wicket-taker with 8 wickets in 3 matches, I have never got another chance to represent Pakistan A. If you look at my record then it points to a bowler who should have got many more chances for Pakistan A. Ideally I thought I could have established myself in the Pakistan A side and then waited for my chance for Pakistan. However that never materialised and my career just stagnated. What generally happens is that your consistent performers in domestic cricket are groomed for international cricket but what happened in my case was that I was dropped from domestic tournaments and ignored by the national selectors. What hurts me the most is that despite taking lots of wickets season after season, nobody has even said to me why they feel I am not worthy of a chance to play for Pakistan A, Pakistan or for any domestic Twenty20 team. Perhaps if I had been given an opportunity in a side match against a touring team I could have shown what I can do, but even that has never happened.

PakPassion.net: What do you feel the future holds for you?

Sadaf Hussain:
I can only control what is in my hands and that is playing cricket with passion and giving 100% every time I am selected. I have always given my all for every team and will continue doing that. What happens after that, well anything can happen in Pakistan cricket, but I will always dream for that chance to wear the Pakistan cap.

Its sad that such a good player should have to literally beg to play in Pakistan A team!

He could find a million people to blame but he has chosen not to.

Should have been a regular for Pakistan in Tests by now at least....

If pak selectors had given this player oppurtunity in 2011 ,he would have been our test weapon but now he is on the wrong side of his age and i will not be surprised if he turns out to be another tanvir ahmad.

350+ wickets in domestic cricket at 18.

Talk about disrespecting your first class cricket.

Inzy need to give him a chance in test cricket asap.

I personally don't rate him but this is the height of nepotism. Disgusting and beyond pathetic. How can everyone ignore this? Just shows how rotten the PCB is that not a soul has spoken up for him.

I hope Azhar Mahmood who frequently writes blogs on Pakpassion and Mickey Arthur who himself stated that he frequently checks pakpassion read this. If someone could put his domestic stats on top the post, would make it even better for those who don't know what this guy is talking about.

Even with so much unfairness, he didn't blame anyone and answered sensibly. I hope selectors and coaches will select him to see where he stands. Couldn't be worse than some others we have tried in the past.

Our entire system is corrupt, every single one who is involved in cricket right now at the PCB is corrupt to the core especially those that are selecting players. The thing is people won't call out such nonsense because they themselves align with a belief system that those selectors in particular have and display at the forefront. Hypocrites of the highest order!

Media doesn't call out the selection panel because they'd want to be preferred when it comes to pressers and conferences. And other smaller publications and platforms don't engage in calling them out because sometimes they throw them a bone or two by doing a 5 minute interview. Pathetic to say the least!

Anybody who has a conscious & doesn't have a motive or agenda would rip into the selection committee right now for this very injustice happening in front of our eyes. Fawad and Sadaf, two blokes that should've been at the helm of our test cricket for the last 5 years have not even featured in a single Intl game whatsoever

Why have the franchises not selected him for PSL? Is he blacklisted or something? Franchises are independent entities AFAIK, but even they have ignored him. That is in spite of the fact that he has received a decent amount of media coverage compared to other players that have made it to PSL teams.

It genuinely makes me sad how someone with stats like him has received the treatment he has.

I'm not sure if Sadaf is good enough for the national team or indeed Pakistan A, but his efforts in domestic cricket point to somoene who at least deserves a proper look by the selectors and national coaches.

8 wickets in 3 fifty over matches in his only chance for Pakistan A are good and then to be dropped after that smells of some poor judgement by the selectors.

The most mind bending fact is that nobody has ever told him what is wrong with his bowling.

This itself is hard to accept. How can everyone turn a blind eye to him? Un-freaking-believable.

The ones who say its his lack of pace or that he isnt good enough should answer why he was selected for the national squad on Pakistan's tour to Westindies in 2011?

He needs to be talked to and explained his flaws.

Karachi [Pakistan] Dec 9 (ANI): Pakistan bowler Sadaf Hussain feels that injustice has been done with him as the left-hand bowler is yet to play for the country, despite a consistent good show in the domestic cricket.

Sadaf has played 73 first-class matches where he has taken 353 wickets since his debut in 2009. He has taken five ten-wicket and 24 five-wicket hauls at the first-class level but has not been picked for the Pakistan team.

"I have no idea why I have never been given a chance to play for Pakistan. The selectors haven't answered this question, in fact nobody has," the Pakpassion quoted Sadaf as saying.

Sadaf said that he is absolutely clueless that why he has been overlooked as he neither has disciplinary problems nor and have never been involved in any controversy.

The 28-year-old also revealed that he once thought of changing his career after facing "setback after setback" but it was his family that changed his mind.

"I was ignored for domestic tournament after domestic tournament and sat watching on the sidelines whilst my teammates played in tournaments. I would perform and then get dropped. I was mentally all over the place and enough was enough. I had set my heart on a change of career, but then my family changed my mind and told me to stick at it and better days would come. My family persuaded me to continue playing cricket at a time when I wanted to just give up the game," he said.

Sadaf has also not played a domestic Twenty20 tournament yet and was also not picked by any Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises.

On being quizzed about it, Sadaf said that he has been playing first-class cricket for seven or eight seasons yet nobody has deemed him capable of playing even one single 20-over match, which is mystifying

"If Rawalpindi or one of the other teams picked me for tournaments like the National T20 Cup then at least I can show what I am capable of and who knows perhaps that could lead to a PSL contract. If I flop in the domestic Twenty20 tournaments then I won't complain, but when you aren't even given a chance then that is just totally confusing and very frustrating," he said.

Despite facing ignorance from the selectors, Sadaf believes that he would not give to play his best and be sincere to the sport as he will always dream for the chance to wear the Pakistan cap. (ANI)

Oh wow he's actually 28 now time does fly! I remember when he was a plucky 23 year old who merited a call up to the squad and there was an outrage by fans saying why he wasn't in the team. But seriously the PCB should look to give him a try in a dead rubber Test match and see what he's made of. Don't even want to bring in politics here but he's from Punjab so I don't understand the bias against him.

Saj.

Did you never ask them the question, why?

I contacted a PSL franchise about him - they asked for his number and never got in touch with him.

I have spoken to selectors about him - silence.

I have spoken to coaches about him - silence in response.

Without any backing he has little hope Rahat Ali was backed and played 14 ODIs despite a mediocre list A average of 34 but obviously bowling over 140kph caught Waqars eye similar story with Wahab.
Despite Sadaf averaging 19 in list A he's yet to play an ODI an injustice if there ever was one.

Isn't it time we at pakpassion started a campaign to get him some backing? e.g. everytime you interview someone you pop in a Sadaf question. e.g " so Mickey one final question you have a bowler whi averages 18 in domestic cricket and yet your not selecting him? why?" you can change Mickey to Inzi , Azhar etc etc,..

This.

I am not saying he is the 2nd coming if Mcgrath but those stats for so many years.

We have had many trundlers getting tests caps so it cant be about the speed.

In England before the Champions Trophy I sat for an hour with Mickey Arthur and one of the things we spoke about was Sadaf. He said he hadn't seen him bowl but had heard of him. He said he would be looking out for him.

I still think this is very poor from the head coach. A bowler is leading the charts for years and his reply is that he has heard of him...

I'll ensure that in his next blog I will get Azhar Mahmood to speak about Sadaf in detail.

Good to hear you'll have a chat. I think its important that we the fans get our voice to the people who can make some difference. Let us know what happens..

Please tell them that if Sadaf was selected on Westindies tour of 2011, he must be good enough to be given a chance surely. It cant be that he was selected without a reason. Problem is he never got a chance to play.

Pakistan Cricket does not give budding cricketers much hope when some top domestic performers over the last few years keep getting ignored for reasons known to nobody apart from the hierarchy at the PCB.

Sadaf and Fawad are the two notable players who have topped the domestic charts in Pakistan for the last few years and their stats show that now so just on that basis they deserve a go. Fawad has had chances but wrongfully dropped despite performing in Test cricket where he should have been a regular by now.

The worst thing is to keep selecting those who have mediocre stats and just because of 1-2 performances end up playing for years on. It is shameful really that nepotism is such deep rooted in all aspects of life in Pakistan that will literally go on till eternity.

Sadaf needs a relative who works for PCB. That way he would get PSL contracts, play for Pakistan and lots more.

Sadaf needs a relative who works for PCB. That way he would get PSL contracts, play for Pakistan and lots more.

Of course that would help but the likes of abbas and imran also seem to be from a very humble background.

Such a shame that, whatever the true potential of the lad, that we have a structure that does not allow him to know where he stands, adding weight to the fact that our selection policy is still not based on pure merit...

For any number of reasons - selection/favoritism, injuries/fitness, discipline - I always find myself saying to fellow cricket watching friends, that whatever our current team is, it probably isn't our strongest, and for reasons that even afflict well structured club cricket, never mind international.

Why is everybody acting surprised? When the PCB Chairman and PM are your governing heads, cases like this should not surprise you one bit.

Fawad and Sadaf, the two most deserving FC players for selection yet continually ignored even under the popular Inzi era ... Our recent results in LOIs are proof positive that when you reward performers they usually deliver.

Test team needs upgrades, adding Fawad to a brittle middle order will add much needed experience from a guy known for scoring big 100s whereas Sadaf would give us a legitimate new ball threat in test format.

Both of these guys deserve to be in playing XI for test team. Sadaf may also be an option in ODIs given his stellar record in List A as well.

It's beyond high time!

Sadaf's first chance should be in ODI's; that's the format in which he has most consistently dominated domestically. On a year by year basis, quite a few players have been averaging around 20 or so in FC cricket recently. By such measures there is not much to separate Hamza and Sadaf. But the LOIs numbers are different story.

Am afraid, PCB seem to have moved on from Sadaf now atleast for shorter formats

This is the problem precisely he has no backing the coach doesn't know who he is the captain doesn't call for his inclusion without any exposure there is little hope for him.

i was watching a talk show and they were saying after Wahab Riaz 2nd quickest bowler in QET was Sadaf Hussain so ....

3-22 for him today in a winning cause as KRL beat NBP by 9 runs

Those are remarkable stats. But it is no surprise seeing Pakistan waste its talent. He is just unfortunate to be born in the wrong country.

This series against NZ would have been an ideal time for his introduction due to the absence of Junaid and Shenwari.

Moreover, NZ wickets would have suited him good.

Moreover, Pakistan is short of one Regular Fast bowler in this series. If one of them gets injured or does not perform, then still we don't have any substitute.

It does beg the question if guys like Aizaz Cheema, Imran Khan Jr, Bilawal Bhatti, Rahat Ali, Sohail Khan, Tanvir Ahmed et al have been given a game, how come this poor lad has been overlooked for so long?

He deserves a chance when brainless bowlers like Rahat can play.

Has he played in any tournament that is televised? Perhaps the issue is that many people have only seen him in odd YouTube clips here and there. Perhaps this lack of exposure has worked against him. Shame he isn’t in any PSL team

I've seen him play multiple times, but this year, in early November, I was the Rawalpindi ground for a personal reason and I got a glimpse of the game, when I saw he was playing I stayed to see what if he'd changed. Still the same.

This tournament is played on flat wickets or spinner friendly wickets.

So his performances will be counted.

Currently he is at number 5 in top wicket takers and Ahmed Jamal is at number 2.

Was at has 2 more matches to become top wicket taker. This would complete the hat-trick for last 3 years.

Stuart Clark made his Odi debut at age 30 and Test Debut as Age 31.

Similar height, pace & bowling style.

Clark was much fitter though. (In Shape)

4 One Day matches to go for Pak in NZ and 1 List A match remaining for Sadaf in this season.

Sadaf is now at number 2 in leading wicket takers list in domestic one day cup.

Sadaf needs to become number 1 after his last One Day match. If he achieves that than in case any pacer in NZ gets unfit selectors will have no choice remaining except selecting Sadaf.

Keeps taking wickets. keeps performing.

When he takes wickets, we hear that the pitches are bowler-friendly :)

In fact, he's now, again, the leading domestic wicket taking pace bowler, That is the key. For what, the 4th year? Clearly deserves never to be given a chance. We are doing so well with Amir and Rumman. And Hasan showed us that we can't base international selection on domestic performance.

As a professional player you need to set goals and achieve them.

* Domestic One Day Cup of Top 8 Departments

* Batting Paradise or spinners friendly wickets of Hyderabad &

* As expected spinners and batsmen dominating

As I write KRL have been knocked out of the tournament and Sadaf has finished as the highest wicket taker among Pacers with 18 wickets in 7 matches. Moreover if Legspinner Irfan does not take more than 3 wickets today than Sadaf will top the charts today.

Sadaf is slightly or marginally quicker than Rumman Raees and his advantage is swing & bounce as he is 6'4 6'5. If any player gets unfit than Sadaf needs to fly to New Zealand.

Unfortunately when Junaid & Usman will get fit than Sadaf won't get a chance.

Sorry to say Pakistan needs Rumman or Nawaz to get unfit and get replaced by Sadaf.

NZ wickets will suit Sadaf.

Note : He might not be able to get visa in time :(

i am sure if they get unfit wahab is ready for 50th comeback and if not he then sami or Rana navid will be tehere as Rao iftikha ris busy in tableegh tehese days.no chance for cheema and M.irfaaan as they need a bit of experince in PSL........hope u got it and will not post things which looks delusionary Mamoon MMHS.

On a side note wahab is bowling quite well these days. You are right he has a chance to make comeback. His fitness & rhythm is back and he would have been a better pick than Rumman but it's a fact that he has v poor 2016 & 2017 with the white ball.

Sadaf has made a v strong statement. His chances have improved more than ever with irfan being 36 & JK & Shinwari being unfit for quite a few months. Shinwari will take more time to recover than what is anticipated.

I do feel for him and want him to play the highest level of cricekt but i doubt it.as he has performed many times better than this and who cares about domestic performances except people on PP.
Here my hate increases for some of these tableghi people when watch inzi and others like him not doing their work right,a bit harsh but its reality.Inzi has done complete Injustice to Hussain Talat,Saad ALi /Sadaf And saud shakeel.ANd a/hmd BAshir or SAdaf would have been ideal to his have a given chances in is tour.

Sadaf is simply brilliant and best....
I cant understand how anyone can make excuses for his non-selection
4 wkts today in Departmental ODI Cup
Biggest mystery of earth as to why he isn't selected for Pak team

Why?? Why? Why? He is really performing very well what else can he do? Should be given justice to this poor guy! If you are not giving him chance at least tell him what he us doing wrong why can't he be selected.

highest wicket taker with 18 wickets , i think last 2 years also he was highest wicket taker

Sadaf has made a v strong statement.

Bhai he has been making strong statements for a very long time now with performances, you know that as well as anyone.

If Inzi can pick Yamin as a fast-bowler for NZ then you never know which random :quote: fast-bowler they'll pick up next.

This NZ tour was a perfect time to select him as we're missing 2 LFM bowlers, now Rumman is underperforming & we do not have a proper replacement in squad. :inzi is not doing any favours to our team by making these big selection blunders.

Can't tell without watching - never seen him in a serious televised game; but shouldn't be worse than Raees with new ball, 6'5" as well.

Has won best bowler of the tournament award. Sad truth is that he still is unlikely to represent Pakistan

It’s hard to follow Pakistan domestic cricket in Uk so a lot of these guys only become apparent when the come onto the international scene. Ruman and faheem have now come onto the international scene with so much hype but we can see they are strictly club level and will never be international standard.

Why then when we are missing a good bowler to replace junaid can we not get this guy Sadaf in the team. He can’t be worse than these two.

Neither Rumaan or Fahim were consistatntly topping the bowling charts in domestic tournaments as Sadaf is doing, Rumaan got hyped after PSL & Fahim's was most known for his hard hitting abilities.

You can watch his bowling videos on youtube, a tall medium fast bowler who relies heavily on seam & swing , he can swing the ball both ways given the right conditions. His clocks b/w 130-140 at max. PPers here who usually go for express pace will never rate him high, Pakistan's obsession with pace is not going anywhere soon considering there's a serious dearth of 145+ bowlers in Pakistan.

And Bounce. That's what Glenn McGrath goes on about when talking about the secret of his action. That's what people always forget about on this board. Unless they are talking about Irfan.

Sadaf is the second tallest after Irfan among top bowlers in Pakistan. Taller than Ehsan. We are playing in NZ. Where Grant Flower has been moaning about bounce. Let's absolutely not send a 6 '5 fast bowler who averages 18 in Loit A cricket and can swing ball to NZ. Never.
